The characters of Daniel Handler's popular children's book series spring to life in this playfully macabre screen adaptation from director Brad Silberling. Contemporary scoring master Thomas Newman may launch the musical proceedings with the brief, Disney-esque flourish of "The Bad Beginning," but the sound of a needle being brusquely dragged across that record brings us to the composer's true intent: a teasing romp through occasionally dark, rhythmically charged musical corners. Employing his patent take on post-modern impressionism to a greater degree than he did in Finding Nemo, Newman gives a decidedly contemporary spin to the oft-cliched concept of children's music. His score is a an inviting fusion of his tense, ever-inventive, ensemble studio concoctions and a Euro-Goth sensibility inspired by the film's visual sense. Alternately bright and brooding, with a surprise at nearly every turn (not the least of which is "Loverly Spring," a full reprise of the score's creepily saccharine opening song), Newman's score is yet another tribute to his restless, seemingly boundless creativity. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Newman does it again!.......2006-11-07

Thomas Newman is one of the most versatile composers of film scores around. His previous works have all been of a very high quality and with Lemony Snicket he certainly doesn't disappoint. Newman has the ability to create a varied score and yet make it entirely identifiable as his own style. Each piece of music fits its corresponding scene of the film like a glove. As unique as the cinematography is, so to is the music.
Newman succeeds in bringing across to the audience the emotion of the characters on the screen, and it's a testiment to his skill and talent that his music can be listened to apart from the film and still be enjoyed as much, if for other reasons.
The final three tracks are particularly special. 'One last look', 'The letter that never came' and 'Drive away' will, I'm sure, take you back to the touching final scene in the burnt out Beaudelaire mansion.
Happy listening to this very special work.

5 out of 5 stars anxiety, determination, melancholy and triumph.......2006-10-31

This music is very emotionally expressive. I really know nothing about music so I won't even try to give an educated review. What I can say is that I and my children LOVE listening to this music. We happen to be fans of the books and the movie, but you don't really need to have experienced these things to enjoy the music. The music paints its own landscape well.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky.......2006-06-20

I'm not very familiar with Thomas Newman's work. I've seen Finding Nemo, but I can't remember the music from it, and I haven't seen any other films with music that he composed. However, if all of Newman's work is of the same standard as this soundtrack, I'd definitely want to listen to more.

One word came into my head when listening for the first time: quirky. I'm not even sure what that word means, but it sounds like the right word to describe the soundtrack: out of the ordinary, wacky, weird, original, wonderful, unexpected, delightful.

It will definitely bring out the child in you...

4 out of 5 stars Very good addition the Newman collection.......2006-03-26

A score like Lemony Snicket is a fairly unique project for Thomas Newman - I've become so used to seeing his name of dramas that his more recent scores for films like "Finding Nemo" and this one were surprising, to say the least. Speaking of Finding Nemo, it's not hard to draw the similarities between them. Lemony Snicket does indeed carry over some of the technique used in Finding Nemo, but because of the differences in the story they tell, you won't be confusing the two easily. Appropriately, Newman uses his off-beat, wacky style more then his heavy dramatic scoring, though they do make an appearance near the end of album. With a total of 29 tracks, Lemony Snicket is definitely a fun ride through the merry world of Thomas Newman we have all come to love.

After a false opening at the beginning of the score, painting a happy-go-lucky image in our minds (presented in full later in the album), the beginning cue, "The Bad Beginning" revels in it's melancholy undercurrent. The main theme for the three children, first presented in "The Baudelaire Orphans", is a delicate melody on music box, which repeats later in "VFD". We get a taste of a nice and exotic outbreak in "The Retile Room", featuring drenched string stacattos over a bed of light percussion. Truly a showcase of Newman's unique musical styles. We can, of course, find Newman's vibe-loving in "Interlude with Sailboat", a mellow little cue featuring a breathy flute over creaking noises and of course, the vibraphones. The highlight of the album presents itself in the cue which represents the emotional climax of the film, "Letter that Never Came", and appropriately conveyed in the music. The typical-for-Newman piano theme introduced in "Resilience" reappears and is taken up by soaring strings, tugging (very effectively, I might say), at the heartstrings. The strings by Newman and his orchestrator Thomas Pasatieri are, as they always are, a delight to hear. Unlike the typical lush sound of modern hollywood string-wash, Newman's strings are always ethereal, clear and beautiful, and "The Letter that Never Came" uses them to full effect.

It's hard for me to find much negatives about the score. It may be a bit off-putting to those used to traditional orchestral fare, but I don't see how that should stop you. Lemony Snicket is an admirable addition to the Newman collection, featuring some great representation of characters as well as a great listening experience. Definitely reccomended to all but the most close-minded of music listeners.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Dose of Newman's Magic.......2006-03-14

This is an incredibly unique and brilliant work by Thomas Newman. I own several of his scores, and this one holds up VERY well! It is full of strange sounds, atmospheric clicks and whistles, and occasionally very "unfortunate" sounding orchestra sections.

If you have heard Newman before, and are already in love with his sense of style, buy this. If not, I reccomend starting with Meet Joe Black, and then buy this. You will love it!
