save the last dance (2001 film) [soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Julia Stiles (The Devil's Own) and Sean Patrick Thomas (Cruel Intentions) star in this romantic musical drama about an interracial couple drawn past cultural barriers and united by music and dance. The soundtrack has no shortage of notable R&B and hip-hop performers. However, as the title Save the Last Dance implies, this is primarily a platform for the art of the slow dance. Rappers Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and the late Notorious B.I.G. (featured as part of 112's track, "Only You") represent the harder end of the spectrum (however, Snoop is paired with Q-Tip and Lucy Pearl for a smoother ride than usual). But the dramatic shuffle of the soundtrack's first single, K-Ci & Jo-Jo's "Crazy," represents the best of what's offered here. Pink's playful "You Make Me Sick" and Donnell Jones's "U Know What's Up" are among the other tuneful highlights. --Rob O'Connor

The song breath & stop by q-tip is NOT on the cd:( which probably would have been the best song on there. But other than that, pretty good fast, dance songs. Good movie, i'm from chicago, so it was nice to see the train i used to ride to work and other chicago sites. Good movie, i bought and have watched it over 5 times.

Hi to the girl in the UK again, I have the same question that she does, where Sarah is dancing outside with the barrel that is on fire, and she has her yellow jacket on. I know some of the lyrics, just from listening to it really closely, but I cannot seem to find the song title for them when I searched it.
They are:
"I'm bad baby I ain't lyin
I see you shake your thang like a proffessional
We can take a ride down the love canal
and baby later on ya at the crack of dawn...
Let me know
I see you lookin my way. I see you lookin what you want shorty
say my name holla at me "

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All...I Must Say..For Todays R&b...........2007-07-03

...I am one who is sick of todays R&b, but this cd shows that their is still hope, if it is produced right with good intellegent song writing(to a point!! that is).
If Ne-yo wrote all the songs? then this cd shows he is making his way(not their yet) to be the new babyface in more ways than one...as babyface wrote lots of good songs for other people but, when it came to writing good songs for himslef for his albums, he could not...ony a few songs were good but, not the albums as a whole...this is the same for Ne-yo, as his first cd(the only one I have) is very poor, except for one or two songs.
Ok...the best song on this cd is...Make You Feel Beautiful, by Rubbin Studdard, now I am not one of his fans but again, good song writing can make an artist..this is why I did not like him, not for any other reason...so I gess he is not working with the right people.

Rihanna's song..The Hotness is also good for that kind of r&b up beat sound (not on her new album).
The song Escape(can be the best song, for some people) is very good along with the songs... Kiss Me by Cassie and Dance Alone by Debreca.. for more good song writing, again in r/b's tearms, but very good.
The song..You and Me is ok along with joe's song It's On You...The song by Ne-yo...Watch You Dance, is simple song writing but, it works as it is done right and sounds good.
The other songs are not to bad...so I highly recommend this to r&b fans and also to people who a sick of r&b but have not all together given up on it...or if you are someone who finds that most r/b albums only have one or two songs and it is not worth you spending your money, then you can safely get this soundtrack.
O Ya...how could I forget..Clap For That, is very good also.

5 out of 5 stars Save The Last Dance 2 Soundtrack has the HOTNESS!!!!!!.......2007-02-22

This CD is bangin'!! Featuring exclusive tracks from Ne-Yo, Joe, Rihanna, Cassie, T-Pain, as well as a bunch of new artists, this album is tight from start to finish. I'm especially feeling the Ne-Yo joint, but he also wrote 6 of the songs so his style shines throughout. Two new artists which also have standouts on the album are Ryan Toby's "Just My Thang" and Debreca's "Dance Alone," both different in style but equally hot. The album definitely deserves 5 stars in my book!!

5 out of 5 stars HOT Album!!!.......2006-11-28

I think this album is GREAT! It captures a variety of audiences from Rihanna to newcomer Jalen to the ever so popular Ne-Yo. I personally love Jalen's record "All I Need". The song is hot. I recommend buying the album....it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the better soundtracks I've heard in a while.......2006-11-19

The soundtrack to Save the Last Dance 2 in a word is hot. Ne-Yo did a hell of a job producing and writing every track on the CD. The standout tracks include Feel Beautiful by Ruben Studdard which can also be found on Ruben's Studdard sophmore disc The Return. JOE returns to the R&B scene with a killer slow jam called It's On You which I hope makes his upcoming album. Newcomer Jalen offers two tracks Escape & All I Need, however the later track is more initmate and showcases his vocals more. Fianlly Ne-Yo himself contributes a up-tempo number called Watch You Dance.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Bubble Gum at it's Bubbliest.......2003-07-25

Tony DeFranco was the Italian answer to Donny Osmond. The DeFrancos really were good singers, even though the music is mostly bubble gum. And some of the songs are very good (and those that aren't will have you bopping along, singing with them anyway!). "Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat" is pretty good and "Save the Last Dance for Me"is wonderful. If you liked them years ago, buy this for the memories; you'll enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Three hits and out.......2002-02-09

Often described as Osmonds or Jackson Five wanna-bes, the DeFranco Family did storm onto the pop charts with the catchy top-five hit "Heartbeat, It's A Lovebeat". Staying power was not in the cards however, and after a tepid follow-up hit and a competent cover of "Save The Last Dance For Me", they disappeared from the charts forever. Though the DeFrancos did not have a sustained string of hits, this acts as a greatest hits piece as well as providing their two albums in their entirety along with two previously unreleased tracks. Well-constructed with good quality sound and all tracks in stereo, this piece fills a void in the reissue market for the "family" groups that were a dominant part of the early 70s music arena.

5 out of 5 stars Its great, Im a tony fan since 1974 and now and forever.......2002-02-01

Its great cd, i love it. I have all there songs, I wish Tony would make a cd of 3 songs I have of them, 1. time enough for love, 2. we belong toghter 3. I thought you might like to know, HEY TONY HOW ABOUT IT. THOSE 3 SONGS ON CD I HAVE. PLEASE ??? PLEASE. I DONT KNOW HOW LONG THEY WILL LAST TO. YOUR FAN SINCE 1974 AND NOW AND FOREVER, TONY IM YOUR 1 FAN HERE IN PA. LORI

    5 out of 5 stars Memory Lane.......2000-06-29

Wow! Listening to this CD was a flash to the past. My sister and I could not help dancing around the room and singing into the ends of a jump rope just like we were kids again. We may not be able to remember our Amazon passwords, but we still can remember all the words to these fabulous songs! This album is one great childhood memory!

    5 out of 5 stars A Slice of Childhood.......2000-05-18

Actually the music on this CD is more than bubblegum. Many of the musicians were heard on 5th Dimention, Carpenters, Partridge Family albums. They are high caliber, and so are the songs. Especially the album "Save the Last Dance for Me." Every track seems to exude an irresistible catchiness that holds up even today. Well worth getting, as only single tracks of their work were available before.

I was expecting the original recordings that I listened to as a kid on my mom's old 33 rpm LP's with haunting string melodies in the background and soulful vocals....and this ain't it. This is a compilation of more recent recordings by the now ancient artist(s) with cheesy synthesiser backup. It's like the Holiday Inn bar version. Don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Dion makes ten early rock & roll classics his own.......2004-02-19

If you ask me, Dion is one of the most underrated singers in rock and roll history. The Dion songs you're likely to hear on the oldies radio stations these days (The Wanderer, Runaround Sue), while great songs in and of themselves, tend to belie the true talent of this singer. Sure, he was the greatest doo wop singer of them all, but he was also the king of the New York streets, a blues singer extraordinaire, and a man who could reach the very bottom of a teenager's broken heart with his passionate slow songs of love and loss. This particular collection from Dion and the Belmonts, Save the Last Dance For Me, is interesting because it consists of songs made famous by other singers. Normally, I don't care for covers, especially when the songs being covered are some of the greatest of the golden oldies era, but Dion was such a rare talent that he could sing someone else's song and make it sound as if it were written for him all along.

Basically, all of these songs should be familiar to anyone with an interest in early rock and roll (but I won't be able to name the prominent artist for each of them). Come Go With Me is right down Dion's doo wop alley and makes for a great start. Bobby Vee made Take Good Care of My Baby famous, but Dion's version is just as good as the original. If your feet aren't moving by this point of the album, enter Queen of the Hop to get things - well, hopping. By now, it's time for a slower song from the heart, and P.S. I Love You fills the slot beautifully. But Dion still has loads of energy to spare and quickly pounds out a huskily impassioned version of Stagger Lee. I think Dion's version of Save the Last Dance For Me should be the standard version of the song, and I'm still amazed by the fact that I enjoy his version of Dream Lover more than Del Shannon's classic recording of it. I really love Teen Angel, especially the strong bass notes emanating from the famous Belmonts in the background. I have no idea how many artists in how many styles have recorded Kansas City; Dion's version is unique and restores much of the energy that seems to be sapped with every succeeding remake of the song. Of course, it's only right and proper than Dion should close things out with a slow song from the heart, and Fools Rush In serves as a perfect closing number on this short but immensely enjoyable album.

These ten songs touch on a number of different musical styles and approaches, but Dion makes each song his very own; he doesn't just sing these songs, he recreates them in vintage Dion style, and that is why anyone who loves the music from the late 50s and early 60s should love Dion and get a big kick out of this wonderful collection of Dion covers.

      5 out of 5 stars "Everybody's a critic!".......2005-03-14

Without getting technical, and having listened to these superb performances/recordings myself, I must say that the truth lies more on the side of the prior reviewer who referred to the detractors as "musical simpletons." The vast majority of listeners will surely DELIGHT in this fine, 3-CD set, assuming, of course, that they do enjoy Gottschalk's music in the first place (and who could NOT enjoy it?!). In sum, just buy it, play it, and relish it!

      5 out of 5 stars Superb work.......2003-07-10

Mandel captures Gottschalk completely in this work. Every work is detailed well. I play much of Gottschalk, and Mandel's interpretation's are done to near perfection. I would dismiss the two previous reviewer's who talked about 'wrong note's' and other garbage, obviously reviewed by musical simpletons. I highly recommed this cd.

      4 out of 5 stars A near miss hit........2002-12-04

While I do have to agree with two other people who reviewed this cd, Mandel does lack some technical abilities. Be it as it may, even if these are his first takes, these are pretty darn good. However, Ability shouldn't be mostly considered when rating these works. Mandels' emotions are well played, tempo changes are great especially in Bamboula, and really well unlike most other ecordings, these sound crispy. What should matter the most is that we aren't listening to a robot play the piano, that would just be boring. Gottschalk doesn't want to be quoted, in my opinion, he wants to be interpreted. And like in all music something different is always better.

It bedevils me every time I reflect that such a great composer is not more noticed and recorded. Gottschalk has a melodic touch that rivals Mozart (yes, this is my opinion), a dexterity that rivals Chopin and an emotion to rival Mendelssohn. Yet, where are the recordings.

Honestly, this is the most comprehensive recording of Gottshcalk, I think, that exists. And our favorite works are all here. L'union, The Last Hope, The Banjo, and in my opinion the pinnacle of emotional pot-boilers, The Dying Poet. This set will provide hours of listening and re-listening pleasure. So why's it so durn inexpensive?

No, this isn't a recording pulled out of the dustbin from 1940 and 'spruced up' for a bargain reissue. The sound quality is quite good, actually. The recording is inexpensive because, if I had to guess and I guess I do, the tracks are all first takes. Of course, Alan Mandel plays with good feeling and ept dexterity but he misses much of the crisp speed and technique that Gottschalk demands. The trills are not smooth and the runs are not clean. Geez! I'm sure they didn't let him redo anything as some of the mistakes were just obvious! Not to worry though. As most of the botched runs are lightning fast, they're only mildly noticeable.

Sadley though, I have to reccomend this recording out of necessity. The other Gottschalk piano collections are good too, but this one has ALL the good stuff where as they only have some of it.

4 out of 5 stars Miss America Reborn.......2003-08-16

There is no denying Vanessa Williams and her talent. While many people don't think of her music as much as people think of Britney Spears and Ashanti, Vanessa still portrays and elegance that many wannabe singers don't have, class. That class came full force with Save The Best For Last. This song really seemed to hit a grand slam, for anybody who only thought of her as being Miss America from a scandal. Absolutely, with the soulful tone of her voice, it became her first #1 hit song. There is no doubt about a song that still reaches beauty with every prom or homecoming dance, and even with its romantic touch. Let's see those wannabes rake that one in. Still, I just wish Vanessa came back with some new music. I really miss hearing her voice on the radio.
