The Godfather (1972 Film) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
When director Francis Ford Coppola turned novelist Mario Puzo's pulpy The Godfather into one of the greatest accomplishments of modern American cinema in 1972, one of his shrewdest decisions was to hand the scoring assignment to the great Italian film composer Nino Rota. Rota, who had built his reputation alongside Fellini (though he'd already scored some three dozen films in the previous 20 years), brought Neopolitan jazz stylings and a Sicilian melodic sensibilty (characterized perfectly by the main title's mournful solo trumpet, which has since become a cinematic icon) to a story of corruption and betrayal as American as, well, gnocchi. Listening to this masterful score one can't help but wonder what Rota, who died in 1979) might have accomplished had he begun working with Hollywood's resources a decade earlier. --Jerry McCulley

At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10
Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Listening music.......2007-03-29
Just as the Godfather films are great so is the music. The music is enjoyable as well as relaxing. If you like just listening music I highly recommend this cd and the others to Godfather 2 and 3 films.
Speak Softly Love ............2006-10-10
The soundtrack to Coppola's 1972 Godfather can bring you back to the period piece that made Brando, Pacino, and De Niro bona fide stars whose longevity is unquestionable. It's the Sicilian inspired love theme (written By Andy Williams) whose cords still provoke the film stills of Michael Corleone's wedding to his first wife Apollonia that takes your breath away. Whether instrumental or sung .... it's haunting strains are a vivid connection to the movie for anyone who has seen it. It is especially haunting because the music was played as a wedding song for Michael and Apollonia in Italy but NOT for Michael and Kay back in New York, which is telling given how Apollonia's memory seemed to cast a shadow long after her tragic death.
I would highly recommend purchasing this soundtrack along with that for 1988's Cinema Paradiso which has a Sicilian-inspired sound to it too. Both play upon the theme of love lost forever and leaving the country of its happenings as the only way to forget, as Toto was just as haunted by Elena as Michael with Apollonia.
Speak softly, love and hold me warm against your heart
I feel your words, the tender trembling moments start
We're in a world, our very own
Sharing a love that only few have ever known
Wine-colored days warmed by the sun
Deep velvet nights when we are one
Speak softly, love so no one hears us but the sky
The vows of love we make will live until we die
My life is yours and all because
You came into my world with love so softly love
Wine-colored days warmed by the sun
Deep velvet nights when we are one
Speak softly, love so no one hears us but the sky
The vows of love we make will live until we die
My life is yours and all becau-au-se
You came into my world with love so softly love
OUTSTANDING!!.......2006-07-07
If you like the movies, you'll love this soundtrack! All of your favorite melodies just hit the spot!!
Relive the film.......2005-10-06
To appreciate this soundtrack fully it is essential to have seen and enjoyed the film although the music is haunting in its own right. Yes, the CD is only just over an half hour in length but quantity is compensated for by quality. The music perfectly captures the moodiness of the film and its period. Buy this CD and you will not be disappointed. It is a low price to pay for owning a 'cut' of movie history - it will be timeless for you.
Classic film score brings me back to ancestral roots.......2005-08-09
Last night my wife & I happened to watch The Godfather on Bravo and the music was the element that really captivated me. When I first saw this movie, I was 9 years old in 1972, on a family vacation, and my very conservative 2nd generation Italian-American parents, completely unaware of the subject matter of the film, thought this an excellent film for the family to watch... Yet, looking back, and feeling the loss of grandparents, great aunts and uncles, the diaspora across America of my first and second cousins, lost in the melting pot, the score for the Godfather reminds me of a time of my own innocence, of a time when large family gatherings were the norm, when every Sunday evening meant hour long haircuts by my 85 year old grandfather and delicious Italian meals cooked by my 70 year old great aunt. It took a long time to accept the loss of family as one by one that generation died off in the 1970's, to realize that life was not going to be a cocoon of large, warm, loving family relations. Yet, way back in 1972, this magnificent, mournful music presaged that tragic realization that life in America was no longer going to be so cozy for those who choose complete assimilation into the melting pot. The fictional Corleone family were Sicilian; my own were Neapolitan & Barese, but for anyone of southern Italian heritage, whether on the mainland or Sicily there is a chill of genetic resonance and recognition when you hear Rota's haunting mix of Neapolitan & Sicilian sounds and rhythms. It's the motherland calling, the soul yearning, ignorant of the original grievances that caused the rift that sent whole communities and solo immigrants to the shore of a new world that was often no warmer a welcome mat than the hidebound, superstitious and vendetta-plagued hilltop farming communities they sought to escape from. Tears of what...joy? or tears of sorrow demand to be exuded from my being when I hear this film score, crying for a warm, fuzzy fantasy of youth, yes, but one that did indeed contain the seeds of my being, and the cocoon of loving family that sheltered me in my growing years. Let me call these tears of joy and appreciation for Francis Ford Coppola and Nino Rota for awakening in me the dormant love of an ancient homeland with many faults, but big enough to give birth to those who gave life to me.

The Godfather saga may have its roots in pulp fiction, but the vision of director Francis Ford Coppola turned the story of Don Vito Corleone into an epic, multigenerational metaphor for modern American society and its place in the world. Coppola's musical choices were equally sage; aged Italian scoring legend Nino Rota's mournful solo trumpet theme ("Godfather Waltz") would become both a crucial, emotional link in all three films and an enduring modern icon on a par with the themes to Star Wars and Jaws.
This compendium gathers key themes from the Godfather trilogy in modern rerecordings, by conductor Paul Bateman and the Prague Philharmonic, that are sonically pristine and faithful to the originals. Utilizing the rich musical heritage of his native Italy (and occasionally evoking memories of his great collaborations with Fellini), Rota's Godfather music would ultimately net him his only Oscar
®, for Godfather II. Carmine Coppola, the director's father, supplements Rota's work with music that's more distinctly ethnic, while the prelude from Italian classical composer Pietro Mascagani's masterful opera Cavalleria Rusticana becomes a crucial element in Godfather III, filling the void left by Rota's passing in 1979. --Jerry McCulley

Noticeably different from the original soundtrack, but that doesn't make it any less fantastic........2006-11-10
When I first reading the reviews to this Soundtrack collection, I was a bit skeptical, as I read many reviews which mentioned the differences among this collection and the original soundtracks. Being a huge fan of the films and their music, I was a bit nervous about my purchase, but figured how bad could it sound? It's the Godfather!
However, when I got the CD in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised. While I did notice some differences (Tarantella sounds somewhat changed) between the Collection songs and the original analogs, they were not a change for worse. These tracks produced the same, if not greater emotional response than those from the films.
Listening to the whole soundtrack is a great experience from beginning to end for fans of the films and their music, and I absolutely praise the Prague Philharmonic orchestra, Crouch End Festival Chorus, and conductor Paul Bateman for their excellent transition of the original work into this 30th Anniversary collection.
If you like the music from the films, get this disc!
Do not confuse music you love with rendition you won't.......2003-11-11
I would not like to repeat what another reviewer said there: this is no original soundtrack. It is a very professional - and very uninspired - job by Prague Philarmonic who might have followed the music sheet but they lost the magic.
Yes, the tunes are memorable and, right from the first movements, they evoke the ghosts of complex cinematic imagery that are so deeply ingrained in the mind of anyone who loves this film. But the magic is gone. You know it's not THE soundtrack, and you've heard the real thing so many times.
The truth is that if you had Pavarotti to sing classic songs of The Rolling Stones, you would be disappointed with the result - despite the fact that Luciano has a much better voice than Mick Jagger.
Those artists who recorded the original soundtrack 30 years ago in Hollywood - and who remembers their names today? - were probably not as accomplished as the Prague Philarmonic. But they created the real thing, and therefore this cover disc will forever be no more than nice background music. That's all I use it for.
Great Quality.......2003-07-15
I bought this after watching the movies for the first time, and listened to it, without noticing any difference. I just went, "what an amazing remastering job", then I saw that they were re-recorded. I never thought there was that big a difference when watching the movies over and over, and I really scrutinize re-recordings generally(like those done for Star Wars).
I bought the regular Godfather 1 cd after this, and I've hardly touched it since I bought it. I think this Godfather Trilogy is far superior in audio quality and performance. I think it has more feeling then the originals.
Disappointing performance of classic Godfather music..........2003-01-09
I am a die-hard Godfather afficianado and I was terribly disappointed in this CD. When I purchased it, I didn't realize it was not a recording of the original soundtrack from the movie. Instead, it is a reproduction of the songs by The City of Prague Philharmonic. The performance is technically accurate, but does not at *all* convey the emotion of the movie's moments. It's as if the musicians studied the score, but never saw the movie. In track after track, the rhythms are not quite right, the mood is not set, etc, which is jarring for someone who knows the movies well. If you just want to hear some pleasing music, buy this CD. If you intend to buy a CD of The Godfather soundtrack in order to re-experience the magic of the Godfather movies themselves, look elsewhere.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

OUTSTANDING!!.......2006-07-07
If you like the movies, you'll love this soundtrack! All of your favorite melodies just hit the spot!!
Original and best.......2005-10-08
If you want the authentic soundtrack that you enjoyed with the movie then this is for you. It is so atmospheric and will bring back the movie to you. Hardly ever has a movie been so obviously recognisable by its music but the music is quality by itself.
The whole CD only lasts for about forty minutes but if you want more then play it again - It's that sort of music. Better still spoil yourself and buy the soundtrack from the 1972 original Godfather film and treat it as a prized double album.
This is the only Godfather CD to get.......2003-12-01
The music score of the Godfather Part II was above and beyond Part I or Part III. The italian arrangments, the tragic melodies WOW. This is the one to get. Part I CD is nowhere nears as good as this and I only listened to some samplers of the compilation CD of all 3 films, and some of those arrangments are different from the movies. Go with the best, this is it.
The songs on this CD are pure and untouched. Total perfection.
Padrino II.......2001-06-16
This soundtrack was twice as compelling as the original Godfather soundtrack. The song I enjoyed the most was " A new Carpet" when Clemenza and Vito stroll through little Italy at the turn of the century.
Padrino II.......2001-06-16
This soundtrack was twice as compelling as the original Godfather soundtrack. I really loved " A new carpet" when Clemenza and Vito stroll over Little Italy at the turn of the century.

Customer Reviews:
Worst Choice of Music from a Movie.......2005-02-27
The Godfather III was a good movie, it had great music, especially one song Brucia La Terra, that Michael's son sang to him in the party before he made his appearance in the Opera, of course someone in their crazy choices left this most beautiful of songs of Sicily out of the CD....W H Y ?????
This CD is an offer you can't refuse........2002-10-03
This CD is real first class stuff. However, I was more then disappointed that it did not have song Brucia la Terra. I was looking for that song ever since I heard it in the movie.
Emotive and Stimulating.......2001-11-04
The most beautiful music from my favourite opera 'Cavalleria Rusticana'and very fitting for a beautifully made film. I echo the sentiments of 'dgabello' Washington. I too was slightly disappointed that one of the most beautiful songs from the film "brucia la terra" was not on the disc. However, despite this, the disc is worth buying. I never get tired of hearing it.
Memories.......2000-09-28
The memories this CD bring back of the whole trilogy are just startling. They only thing this CD is missing is Brucia la Terra (aka Anthonys song, or My earth is burning). That song does not appear on any of the other cd's, unfortunatly, but for all you Godfather lovers, just buy the cd, for it will make you feel like you were watching the movie.
A Sumptuous Symphony for the Final Movement of The Godfather.......2000-01-02
This soundtrack, like the movie THE GODFATHER PART III, is an unqualified MASTERPIECE. It not only evokes the emotions of the previous Godfather movies through subtle motifs such as the Immigrant's Theme it also brings to life the the nuances of the film's overarching tragedy(especially Tracks 2,8,AND,10). In the end this EXCELLENT soundtrack earns its place with those of Godfather I & II by being, in one CD, the EPIC SUMMATION of the GREATEST SAGA IN MOTION PICTURE HISTORY.

Customer Reviews:
Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
Better than the First Volume.......2005-08-04
There is a great collection of music to be found here. There are many great renditions. The "2001, a Space Odyssey Fanfare" was outstanding. "Book of Days" from "Far and Away" had a very unique approach. I recommend this one deeply, oh yes I do, by far and away!
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 2.......2005-06-17
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' treatment of film scores on this second tribute to Hollywood are somewhat more pleasing than Volume I. The selections are more intriguing and demonstrate a more positive approach to film scores and their value as true musical art forms. There is quite a diverse representation of music here. The incredibly powerful main title to MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (Bronislaw Kaper) juxtaposed with the bittersweet and romantic love theme to SPARTACUS (Alex North) and the intimately tender love theme to FRIENDLY PERSUASION (Dimitri Tiomkin) are masterfully achieved. I have never been that enamored with this CD's 20-bit digital recording but it has grown on me. Still, I highly recommend and enjoy this CD.
Sheila from Savannah, Georgia.......2005-01-15
I love this cd. It is the greatest. Moonglow and Midnight Cowboy are my favorites.
A great album.......2001-01-28
Erich Kunzel, once again comes through with another terrific album of movie music. On this album you will find preludes, themes and main title music from some of Hollywood's most loved movies. Films from as early as 1936's "Modern Times", through to 1992's "Far and Away", are represented here. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra are as wonderful as ever, and the 20-bit digital sound system makes for unequalled sound quality. A pleasing highlight for me, is the wonderful "Moonglow" which starts off track 5. The jazz trio of piano, bass and drums eventually is joined by the orchestra for the theme from "Picnic". Then we have the beautiful waltz from "Around the world in eighty days". With the wonderful accordion solo, you can imagine being on a merry-go-round. This is truly a beautiful album...a must for lovers of orcestral music.

Great '70s Pop and Soft Rock Covers.......2002-02-23
The "easy listening" label which has stuck to Andy Williams doesn't do justice to his power, expansive range, and impeccable control. This is particularly evident on his blockbuster 1972 "Godfather" album, featuring his Top 40 hit single of the same title that he ends on a note somewhere in the stratosphere. Other highlights include a compelling version of Legrand & Bergman's "Theme from 'Summer of '42,'" which Columbia should have released as a single, and a brassy, knockout reading of Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur Park," which Andy still performs in concert today. Williams' husky falsetto and pop sensibility enables him to pull off three soft-rock hits of the era -- "Precious and Few," "Imagine," and a multi-tracked "Everything I Own" -- with sensitivity and aplomb.
"The Way We Were," released in 1974, features more '70s pop covers, including "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me," "Killing Me Softly with Her Song," and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." Andy's powerful tenor soars on "If I Could Only Go Back Again," a ballad co-written by the album's producer, Mike Curb, and Alan Osmond of the Osmond Brothers. Although the arrangements were supervised by Don Costa (veteran of many of Sinatra's later sessions), they sometimes get a little string-heavy and are more conservative than the Artie Butler and Al Capps charts on "Godfather." Two cool exceptions are the covers of the Love Unlimited Orchestra's instrumental hit, "Love's Theme," and Diana Ross' "Touch Me in the Morning." Through it all, Williams shines with his usual thoughtful and pleasing tones.
The Real ANDY WILLIAMS.......2002-02-14
This wonderful re-release of two of Andy's best early 70's albums in their entirity is a long over due treat. The Andy Williams of the 1970's is the real Andy Williams. No longer locked in to the light pop sounds expected of him in the 60's, these post weekly T.V. albums show what a really good pop singer he is. Just listen to "Until It's Time For You GO"--BEAUTIFUL. Precious and Few, Everything I own, The Way We Were, and TOuch Me In The Morning are all fabulous. The keystone, though, has to be Andy's 1972 top 40 hit Speak Softly Love, from the Godfather and the beautiful Music From Across The Way.
Forget the sweater clad Andy Williams of the 1950's and 60's (well maybe not forget)--take a new look at the hip Pop icon of the 1970's---a decade that saw Andy earn 7 gold/platinum albums, host the grammy awards for 7 years and tour the world to sold out audiances. This is the real Andy Willaims---the same one you will see on concert in europe in the summer of 2002.
Andy covers the 70s.......2002-02-08
This two album CD has Andy covering a variety of 60s and 70s hits and doing it in typical Andy Williams style. McArthur Park and the Love Theme from the Godfather are over-the-top arrangements that blare and blast noise in all directions, but Williams keeps his cool raising his voice but never yelling. Williams seems to use a falsetto in some of these songs--was hs voice really that high? He does especially well with John Lennon's Imagine, Summer of '42, Touch Me in the Morning, and Killing Me Softly with Her Song. Less good are Seasons in the Sun and Sunshine on My Shoulder and You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me. The disc gives you a generous supply of music--74 minutes--and the sound quality is superb. One thing that Collectables needs to improve on is the absence of liner notes. The CD sleeve comes with the standard Williams bio, but nary a word about these two albums, from 1972 and '74. Original liner notes are a nifty addition to any disc and they are missed here.

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!
