Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Pixar Studios continues its string of computer animation successes with this satirical tale of a family of superheroes (picture a flabby, suburbanized Fantastic Four) forced out of retirement by -- what else? -- an evil genius and his plot for world domination. Director Brad Bird, whose Iron Giant was one of the 90's most sublime, if underappreciated animated triumphs, decided he wanted his Incredibles score to be a throwback to the spy-action genre of the mid-60's. Enter Michael Giacchino, the young composer who'd previously conjured a marvelously eclectic range of musical styles in service of TV's Alias. In his feature film debut, Giacchino (with a key assist from veteran arranger Jack Hayes) ups the ante of Bird's back-to-the-future spy-score gambit with an orchestral jazz soundtrack powered by the brash rhythms of television's MannixMan From U.N.C.L.E. beneath a veneer of melodic intrigue and detached elegance that recalls the prime of John Barry's BJames Bond oeuvre. More importantly, the young composer serves it all up with a sense of assured retro-cool and a distinct lack of irony that makes it all the more inviting. --Jerry McCulley

Dare I say "Incredible" soundtrack? (groan).......2007-01-03
Love this sound track. So much great classic/spy/action music. Very diverse sounds from the 60's-ish spy era. Unfortunately, the soundtrack does start to blur & get more dull after about the first 8 or 9 tracks.
Better than the music that influenced it!.......2006-09-06
First, let me say that if you don't like this soundtrack there's something wrong with you.
On a more serious note, my wife and I were avid "The Incredibles" viewers when the movie initially came out on DVD. We would watch it at least four times a week - we're both 35 and have no children but we both just love everything about this movie!
I didn't think I paid much attention to the music until we took our neice and nephew to Disney World a few weeks ago. I was sitting on a bench and a small roving band came around and played the "Incredits" live and I thought to myself, "I just NEED to get that soundtrack!" By the way, the band was awesome.
When you listen to the soundtrack you can pick out the different influences, especially the John Barry influence. I found myself thinking things like, "Hey, that reminds me so much of 'Goldfinger'" and "I need to watch 'Moonraker' and listen to the music again!"
One "problem" I have is that I like to listen to music when I go to bed. The first time I popped the CD in and laid down I just couldn't sleep because the music was setting off dialog cues from the movie in my head. I never realized just how much the soundtrack had sunk into my subconscience while watching the movie all those times.
Bottom line: this is an awesome soundtrack. The composition is wonderful and the musicians do a great job. Get it!
Ferociously good writing music.......2006-05-15
I've been doing a fair amount of medical writing lately, and in terms of research and distillation it requires long, long, *long* hours at the computer, kicking whole pods of dead whales down the beach. Apart from the strongest possible coffee this side of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, the only stimulus I can manage is music, and it has to be orchestral and evocatively thematic.
When my latest crop of grandchildren dragged me into the living room to watch *The Incredibles* (which I'd purchased for them on DVD) a year ago, I was caught not only by the characterizations and the plot line - wonderfully true to the sentiments of all those great First (DC) and Second World (Marvel) comics that ensured I'd be literate in spite of those damnfool *Dick and Jane* readers (how many kids learn to spell "invulnerability" before they first encounter "See Puff," anyway?) in the '50s - as well as the music.
Obviously, I can't watch the movie itself while I work, but Michael Giacchino's scoring is not only wonderfully evocative of the film's imagery and pacing but mellifluous in the extreme. My taste in jazz essentially begins with Vince Guaraldi and ends with Chuck Mangione - powerfully melodic composers and performers - and now I've got to work Michael Giacchino into the temporal spectrum, especially easy as his work for this film was deliberately devised to tease forth precisely that "retro" sort of appeal. He delivers an homage to the best of the film and television scoring experts of the late '50s and early '60s (my own personal golden age of comic book literacy, you'll note), and he does it with imagination, zest, and polished expertise.
Anyone who enjoyed Brad Bird's film and wants to see it again in his/her mind's eye, anyone who took delight in the background music that made such an impression in the early *James Bond* movies, anyone who needs to stay up all damned night wrestling with online research and the dreary task of churning out readable prose would do well to add this CD to that stack of jewel cases kept within arm's reach of the desk.
Incredible!.......2006-03-01
Since last october I have seen the Incredibles' movie at least 2 times a week. That is because my little 2 year old doughter beg me to turn on the TV and put on the DVD each time I came back from work. So I decided to estimulate her about music. Now, each morning when I drive her to school we listen the cd and she tell me each scene of the movie according to the track we are listening.
By the other side I think the music's composer did great adding a touch of "big band" style to almost all of the tracks, specially the first and the final scores.
Awesome soundtrack.......2005-08-03
The music matches the movie perfectly. It has an older sound to it, like a 70s sitcom, but it's also adventurous and jazzy. The music evokes the same emotions that the movie does, which is difficult to do. Michael Giacchino is a talented composer. I'm sure we'll hear much more from him in the future.

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

review.......2006-04-06
As a former student of Gene Pokorny, I can attest to his wonderful insight and musicianship. If you are a musician (especially if you play tuba), this is a must-own. This CD dissolves all of the stereotypes...the tuba is just as much a solo instrument as trumpet, flute or any other!

"Memories of You" and an English Folksong To!.......2000-09-24
There is an incredible range of music, from the amazing interpretation of "Memories of You" to Carnival of Venice, its just.............great!
Very nice phrasing........1999-05-20
I first came upon this C.D. when I was in School taking tuba. It is a very good piece to add to one Tuba music collection. The music he choses is excellant and gives a young listener a taste of the range a tuba can play. The disc is recorded in a rather simple matter and you can here the breaths Pokorny takes as he goes on. It adds a very r/t touch to the disc.

Great Vocabulary-Building Narration.......2007-02-24
I purchased this Audio Story Adventure in a chain store. The narration is quite good, and my son, who is six, has learned quite a bit of vocabulary from listening to this story in the car. I am writing this review because I spent this evening looking for other narrated movies on cd, and I have not been able to find any.
My son and I did recently listen to E. B. White's recording of "Charlotte's Web." It is a great, but is not currently available on CD through Amazon. It is available on cassette.
Great for long car ride!!.......2006-07-01
I bought this CD a year ago and my kids absolutely LOVE IT!! We listen to it every time we are going to be in the car for more than 30 minutes. I wish I could find more CD's like this. Personally I'm a little tired of it, and would love to switch it up with some other audio adventures, but the kids never seem to get sick of it. It's especially great if you don't have a movie player in your car. Definately a good buy.
I feel the same.......2006-05-28
When this came out I bought it expecting another wonderful read-a-long story in the same line of the previous dozen or so read-a-long stories that Disney has released over the past few years. When we got to the car and realized it wasn't, I immediately went back into the mall to get my money back...if I simply wanted a story, I'll get the DVD (when it comes out)!!!
A read-a-long is a valuable learning device, which takes advantage of a kid's enthusiasm over a movie to teach.
An audio-adventure is simply a videoless DVD...what a waste!
I hoped that Disney would see their error and rerelease this properly, but I guess not.
Incredibles Audio Story.......2005-01-07
This is NOT a bad CD as the other three women make it out to be. They obviously just didn't READ THE COVER. It is not a "Read-Along," it is an "Audio Story." Amazon has it listed incorrectly, but that is not Disney's doing. As far as "A Mom's" complaint about the length, it clearly says on the cover that it is "Over 1 Hour Of Movie Fun." It also clearly states that there is a "Collectible Souvenir Movie Booklet" included. Nowhere does it say there is a storybook included. We listened to it on CD in the car and when we got home our son ran to get his tape-player so he could listen to it again on the cassette tape. The only reason I'm giving it only 4 stars is because it started a little later into the movie and it omitted a couple of scenes our son really likes. He asked why they weren't on it but he didn't cry because he understands that they can't put the ENTIRE movie on the disk. It is certainly not a disappointment though. Of course, if you just assume without reading the package you will be disappointed in whatever you buy. Get a clue ladies and READ!
The Incredibles Audio Story Adventure.......2004-12-26
My son is also a collector of Disney Read-alongs and he too, was disappointed to discover that there is no book with which to read along. I imagine this same scene was replayed all over the country on this Christmas morning! Thumbs down to Disney on this one!

60s L.A. soul at its finest........2002-07-08
First off, I have to admit that I don't own the CD reissue of this album, but I do have the original LP. Assuming that the CD doesn't have terrible sound quality, then it's highly recommended. Cal Waymon quite simply had one of the most underappreciated voices in r&b, and this album is a great testament both to that fact and the terrific orchestration that was so common in the Los Angeles sound of the day. Everything you'd want from a mid-to-late 60s soul LP is here, from storming Northern dancers to heartwrenching deep soul ballads. Definitely worth your money.
