Editorial Reviews

In the wake of his Sixth Sense triumph, young director M. Night Shyamalan shrewdly marketed himself as a marquee draw, a thriller auteur in the vein of Hitchcock and DePalma. In the process he's also run headlong into one of Hollywood's truest adages: There's no such thing as a sure thing. But while his tale of an isolated hamlet ringed by mysterious, threatening 'others' met with tepid reviews and disappointing box office, it also underscored another filmmaking truism: So-so films can still be blessed with magnificent musical scores. This hauntingly beautiful, yet thoroughly contemporary orchestral soundtrack by James Newton-Howard distinguishes itself at every turn, becoming a clear standout in the ongoing collaboration between the composer and Shyamalan. While similar fusions of minimalist and post-modern musical influences can sometimes seem not much more than hollow intellectual exercises, Newton-Howard inhabits his hypnotic arpeggios and droning rhythms here with an evocative undercurrent of the mysterious and mystical. The composer leans heavily on solo violin to conjure a mock folk tradition of indistinct origins, wedding it to a contemporary classical sense that's as seamless as it is distinguished. -- Jerry McCulley

If John Mayer has ants in his pants--and, given his many projects and the amount of music he releases in any given year, it appears that he does--his fans aren't complaining. Nor should they be. The Village Sessions, a six-song EP that retools favorites from Mayer's highly regarded Continuum disc, is mostly a way to feel further connected to him; the hurt comes through on "In Repair" both vocally and via expressive acoustic guitar work, making the Continuum version sound clipped by comparison, and the kicked-back version of "Good Love Is on the Way" (the one song here not from Continuum, but from Try!, a 2005 live disc) dispenses with angst in favor of a more liquid groove. Overall, it's a study in intimacy and focus--for Mayer, there seems to be a certain magic within the four walls of L.A.'s Village Recorder, where he laid down these tracks. Then again, maybe not: Prolific as he is, Mayer is no wand-waver. His reputation for musical pureness proceeds him, and The Village Sessions is one more testament to it. --Tammy La Gorce

The Village Sessions.......2007-07-13
Excellent, John Mayer at his best in acoustic. The songs, most of which are from Continuum are rich and very different in acoustic. Some are almost unrecognizable like they are being played on a different instrument altogether. Very good music from a John Mayer fan.
Slow dancing in a burning room.......2007-06-06
this is a must have for JM fans I'm listening to it right now. I did like "Slow dancing in a burning room" from Continum but this version for some resaon blows it out of the water I can't get enough of this song!!!
Nice to see talent in today's music scene.......2007-05-24
I must admit that when John first appeared with album # 1 a few years back I said to myself "here we go again, another pretty boy with no musical substance". Since then, I have been proven wrong and become a fan. In addition, I must applaud him for being so ambitious. He's released alot of music and covered alot of ground in 5 years. Although I wasn't crazy about the trio record (he ain't Hendrix or SRV even though he is a huge fan of both), the Continuum album really brought me around. Most of the songs are on the mellow side but still are great! This EP contains acoustic stripped down versions of some of those songs and is priced well so I would advise anyone who likes his current album to pick this up as a companion piece.
The Village Mayor.......2007-05-16
There is an apparent transition from the old John Mayer to the new artist that he is becoming. There are a couple of songs that definitely focus on his relationships, but there are also a couple that focus more on his world view and his stance on the current political situation. All of this is wrapped up in his solid musical skills. Ben Harper even makes a guest appearance on these recordings, making this a true underground masterpiece.
Good John Mayer.......2007-05-12
I am not particularly a fan of the live recordings. The people screaming in the background accompanied with hard to hear music is not something I like to subscribe to, but this CD is better than the average live recording. I don't know if it is because it is from a smaller venue or what, but Village Sessions really shines through. Being an acoustic guitar fan, it is nice to hear some of my favorite newer Mayer songs in the acoustic format on this disc.
I liked this CD better than As/Is just because the quality was better (in my opinion.) If you are a John Mayer fan this is a must have, especially for the price!

4 ½ stars.......2007-06-04
From Charlap's solo choruses in "Rocker," at once burning hot and supremely cool, to the wistful "Last Night While We Were Young," this is an absorbing and sometimes startlingly good record. Although it doesn't seem right that Charlap tends to get most of the attention - i.e. the focus on Charlap in interviews about the trio's work, his lone cover photo here, and some critics' annoying habit of dubbing the unrelated bassist and drummer "the two Washingtons"- he really is a fine player. His solos are consistently interesting and invigorating; his technique is impressive; and how about the way he uses the piano? Even if one may grow weary of a certain right hand tremolo/trill effect as transitional device, Charlap's quiet but hip comping, use of lower registers, piano-rattling glissandi, and superimposition of left hand and right hand are extremely effective and rather unique. So too are his undulating lines, at once muted and strong, and his enviable ability to create a translucent, ethereal musical space. It is for these reasons that "Autumn in New York" garnered such a reverent response from the Vanguard audience - and "My Shining Hour" such a raucous one.
Speaking of "My Shining Hour," let me not be guilty of the same Charlap-centered commentary I lamented earlier. As the liner notes point out, "the incandescent playing captured here is made possible by trust," a trust which in turn is only possible thanks to the rock-solid foundation provided by Peter Washington on bass and the combustible energy released by Kenny Washington on drums. Although I feel that Peter has not yet been ideally captured on recording, it is quite evident from this album and others that Kenny sets the fire under the band and leads them to "Shining Hour" heights. The very swinging feel of a potentially square tune like "Rocker" and potentially static arrangement of "While We're Young," as well as "Last Night While We Were Young's" magical coda, owe much to Kenny's fire, too.
It should be no surprise, then, that numbers like "Lady is a Tramp" cook when the Charlap Trio plays `em, and ballad arrangements like "All Across the City" are so good they almost hurt. But "While We're Young" also provides indisputable proof that this group can play in 3. So let's hear some more waltzes, and more of that glorious ebb and flow that another pianist named Bill inspired at the same Village Vanguard :) How about more bass and drum solos too?!? (come now, 2 bass solos and 1 drum solo really are not enough for a whole album). Then, consider the possibilities of straight 8, Latin, funk, mixed meter...you know these guys can do it. To me, this would make a visit to see them at the Vanguard or Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola that much more memorable - and their group that much better.
A Great Snapshot of an Excellent Trio.......2007-06-01
After many years of widespread acclaim as one of the best working groups in mainstream jazz, the Bill Charlap Trio has finally issued its first live recording, and the results are most impressive. Individually, the group's members are all virtuoso musicians of the highest caliber, and in any setting they can be counted upon to deliver vivid, engaging performances (see for example Charlap's collaborations with Warren Vaché and Peter Washington's work with the great Tommy Flanagan). However, when they play together their rapport is so strong that each seems to bring out the best in the others, and even on the trio's studio recordings they sometimes attain a level of controlled intensity that is downright mesmerizing, both on uptempo numbers and on slow ballads. Here, they reach that level again and again, and the interplay among them is consistently thrilling; each plays with great energy and creativity, but also with great precision, and they are so perfectly attuned to one another that when they improvise together they do so with a degree of cohesion and unity that is nothing short of astonishing. ("My Shining Hour" provides an especially good example of this.) Their own enjoyment of what they can do is both palpable and infectious, and while they never indulge in the kind of showboating that sometimes mars live recordings, the presence of an attentive and appreciative audience does seem to inspire them. The sounds made by that audience are not the least bit obtrusive, but their applause helps to create a pleasant atmosphere of immediacy, as does the immaculate sound achieved by engineer Joel Moss. The disc is also nicely programmed, though there are fewer rarities than one might expect given Charlap's extensive knowledge of the American songbook and his penchant for reintroducing overlooked but worthy material.
In all, this is a most welcome document of an exceptional group in action. It is also long overdue, so let's hope that volume two will follow in short order!

When you hear this music clan -- group just doesn't seem to be the right designation for a band of nomad desert musicians/soldiers -- a listener can hear the calm of the desert night air and the serenity of the musicians who live there. The Taureg people truly seem to be of the land and never more so than here on the band's third album, Aman Iman. The loping percussion and the circular guitar lines conjure wide-open desert images evoked in the repetitive grooves. Some may grumble that the members are playing much as they did on the first and second albums, blending Arabic song structures, desert wails, and primordial blues guitar riffs, but for it to be any different would be akin to asking the people in Tinariwen to change who they are. Never have words been truer than those of the title, but this album also appends that sentiment, proving that music is life for the desert Taureg too. --Tad Hendrickson

Atmospheric? Like a stone on your head........2007-07-04
Finding Tinariwen made me happy. This group does to rhythm what Anoushka Shankar does to the 8 note scale. These are the strongest rhythms I've ever heard. They are something alive, you want to step aside to let it pass, you want to spin it and ultimately you want to dance with it.
This in NO way fits within my definition of atmospheric music. That genre was done to perfection by Eno 15 years ago. No, this music may invoke trances, it may put you on a plane to Timbuktu it may make you inexplicably desire to wrap your entire head in a sheet. It may cause you to dance your wife out of the living room, down the hall and into the bedroom. But it will not let you ignore it.
If you find yourself thinking this is atmospheric music then you're not listening. Consider it rock music. Turn it way up until plaster falls off lathe and then you will hear what you have missed.
5 stars squared.
Tinari"wonderful".......2007-06-14
A mixture of funky guitar, traditional drums, and an array of upbeat instruments nicely compliments the seriousness and heaviness of the songs lyrics. All songs are translated for you in the "liner notes". Highly recommended.
Great Album!.......2007-05-15
Just like Amassakoul, Aman Iman is some of the best music on the entire planet. A mix of blues and northern African styles that puts you in a trance.
Traditional real life in 2007.......2007-05-14
I like the way he touches the guitar. At first I saw Tiraniwen three years ago and was not so impressed, but little by little I got the feeling for this desert rebel. He is wonderful bluesy and still totally based in his Mali culture. What I like very much is that he feels for all Mali tribes and cultures. He is a good example for harmony and peace. I want to visit the Desert Music Festival in Timbouktou in 2008.
Hypnotic and enthralling.......2007-05-12
Tinariwen has often been described as "John Lee Hooker in the Sahara." While that baseline is a decent enough introduction, it's not nearly enough to embrace this band. This album follows Amassakoul, my first Tinariwen CD, and Aman Iman surpasses Amassakoul in every way. Depending on your mood, the music is soothing, hypnotic, challenging and stirring. The variations worked on repetitive figures reward repeated listening. If you haven't heard Tinariwen, Aman Iman is a great place to start.

In 2001, five Roma (the correct term for the people known as "Gypsies") ensembles joined forces for a never-to-be-forgotten road trip called "The Gypsy Caravan Tour." Fortunately, filmmaker Jasmine Dellal (American Gypsy) and her crew, which included Albert Maysles of Gimme Shelter fame, rode shotgun, and the result was an astonishingly intimate and revealing documentary. Members of Maharaja (Rajasthan, India), Antonio el Pipa's Flamenco Ensemble (Andalucía, Spain), Esma Redzepova & The Stevo Teodosievski Ensemble (Macedonia), Fanfare Ciocarlia (Romania), and Taraf De Haïdouks (Romania) were captured on and offstage as they gradually coalesced into a mutually appreciative team. Featuring interviews with band members plus enlightening comments from actor Johnny Depp, a longtime devotee of Roma music and culture, Gypsy Caravan was a hit at several pre-release festivals. It will certainly come to be recognized, along with The Last Waltz, Woodstock and The Buena Vista Social Club, as one of the greatest concert films ever made. The accompanying album includes electrifying tracks recorded during the course of the movie, plus bonus highlights. Lovingly produced by Brian Cullman, the set is a sonic "you are there." The musicians' feverish need to make music is thrillingly palpable; it saturates every second of their lives, whether they are playing before sold-out houses, at home with friends and family, or in transit between gigs. --Christina Roden

Some may complain that Ojos De Brujo is simply the latest group to pillage flamenco music, but they'd be missing the point. This Barcelona band grew up with the flamenco tradition while also devouring a steady diet of hip-hop, punk, funk, gypsy and Middle Eastern music, so the inclusion of rapping, turntables and funk grooves is a logical one for these upstarts. Marina "La Canillas" Abad doesn't have the range that a conservatory-trained singer might have, but she makes up for it with her vivid, socially conscious lyrics and staccato delivery, which can skitter into rapid-fire rapping that resonates surprisingly well with flamenco's chattering rhythms. Indeed, the group is unafraid to mix anything: "Naita" starts out as a traditional song before breaking into a techno finale. More graceful is the fusion on "Memorias Perdías," which meshes flamenco, gypsy and swing jazz. One of the most hotly anticipated releases of the spring, Bari has a punky spirit that will make it a pick on many year-end lists. --Tad Hendrickson

I almost wore this CD out!.......2007-05-15

Flamenco and hip hop fusion that works.......2006-02-27
Ojos de Brujo, "Eye of the Wizard", is a musician collective from Catalan Spain. Their music base is Flamenco but they bravely mix hip-hop, rap, and jazz in a fused frenzy of originality. Unlike most music fusions, Ojos de Brujo is able to remain true to its roots and still produce a unique sound. Their Bari Album of 2002 is their second release and the first time I heard it I was amazed at how they were able to join the deeply emotional lyrics of Flamenco with the more urban and street sound of hip-hop. Their lead singer, Marina Abad, can inspire deep emotions with her traditional Flamenco renditions but she inspires amazement when she breaks into a rap in the middle of the song Zambra. I hate to admit that I have been very biased when it comes to hearing rap from European bands, and usually found their attempts innocent at best, compared to the more real sound we hear in the USA. But Ojos de Brujo pulls it off because they are rapping about their emotions and world, and are able to incorporate rap lyrics into the pulse and rhythm of Flamenco, a music genre that is very much in their blood as much as culture. Do not get me wrong, 75% of the music is Flamenco on this album, but just when you think it is just the same traditional beat, they mix it up and hit you with a completely new sound. Ojos de Brujo is one of those jewels of originality and inspiration that you find by word of mouth, or by mistake, but when you hear them you know you are listening to something special. Ojos de Brujo's Bari album is a fruit of that genius and like all genius; it is fleeting and only temporary.
Rare energy.......2005-12-28
This isn't flamenco fused with anything, this is a brand new recipe and it comes off fantastic. Energetic, with a strong flamenco beat cooked in with a variety of styles to produce an amazing collection of really excellent songs. If you like any of the new style flamenco with a beat, this is a must. Of the 30 second sample cuts provided by Amazon, listen to #2 Tiempo De Solea, and #5 Quien Engana No Gana, that will give you an excellent idea of how strong this album is.
excellent music from Spain.......2005-11-28
I heard this for the first time in Mexico City, and I just absolutely loved it from the outset. Especially thrilling is track 5 "quien engana no gana." An incredibly successful blend of traditional and modern. Also check out Radio Tarifa.

Bill Evans, with virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, reinvented the jazz piano trio, creating stunning contrapuntal dialogues that merged luminous lyricism with layers of complex, elusive harmonies, its moments of limpid beauty suddenly giving way to surging rhythms. The trio's finest recorded moments, these performances were captured just 10 days before LaFaro's death in a car accident. The original releases--Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby--are celebrated masterpieces. This three-CD set is a brilliant reissue--almost a revision--of that material, with superb sound from the newly remastered original tapes and all of the music presented in the sequence of the original five sets, adding a previously unissued take of "Gloria's Step," spoken introductions, and the band's incidental conversation. For those who know this music, it's a chance to hear it in a fresh way; for new listeners, it will come as a revelation at a bargain price. --Stuart Broomer

A piece of history.......2007-06-27
For your ears only.....some people think that Bill evans is a "nice musician" Like its musac in an elevator. Listen to "my foolish heart" with headphones on, eyes closed, cranked! Let yourself get inside the music...listen to the subtleness of his playing...let it take you on a journey. This song, I think, shows the essence of bill evans. Scott lafaro and evans together is a killer combo, unfortunately there is not much out there from their short collaberation. This makes this 3 disc set a must own!
It's like being there.......2007-05-12
I was lucky enough to hear Bill Evans, Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro in person at the Vanguard. This recording is the next best thing to being there because you hear everything the recordng engineer heard. Being there was unforgettable. Evans is the Chopin of America, in my opinion, except Chopin didn't swing or (to my knowledge) improvise. This group of sidemen constituted Evans' best trio ever.
A superb collection.......2007-05-10
This set was my first introduction to Bill Evans...and what an introduction. A marvelous album in so many ways. Even if you are not a jazz fanatic, this is one box set to own.
Excellent.......2007-04-14
Execellent, both as an introduction or if you've been listening to jazz for a while. Only gets better over time.

I came at this album kind of backwards - I first listened to CDs of Evans playing with Tony Bennett, then solo, then live at Montreux with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette (trying to hear him at his most upbeat). I knew that this was one of the most revered albums in jazz, but I couldn't help but wonder what the fuss was all about. How much better could it be?
Much better. First, the recording quality on this album blows away the Montreux album. Yes, there's glasses clinking and occasional chit-chat, but it tells part of the story, as does the enemic applause. The bass tone is clear and full. The cymbals are not oppressive. It is amazing what such a meager recording setup can achieve in the right hands. If you have fear based on other bad jazz recordings, have no fear here.
Then there's the players. Bill Evans is Bill Evans - he has his good days and bad days, and most players people long in vain to live up to his bad days. And this was a good day, indeed. Then there's Scott LaFaro on bass. You really have to hear him play to appreciate just how much better than just about everyone else he was. He is busy yet tasteful, innovative and compelling to listen to. It would be a rare player indeed to come even close. Then there's Motian on drums. Based on other things I heard, I expected him to sit back, keep the beat and stay out of the way. He keeps the lid on the volume, but he plays with a control and intensity that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Unlike Jack DeJohnette, his timing syncs up precisely with Evans. His contribution to this trio should not be underestimated.
Then there are the songs. Each song is like an artichoke - dig a little deeper and you get a brand new flower. My favorites include Milestones with the upbeat drums and tasty chord voicings, the sweet playing on Alice and Wonderland, and the bass harmonics on Some Other Time, but there are so many good parts, and no weak ones. I'm sure my take will change over time as I become more familiar with the songs.
Finally, the context of the recording plays a big part in my overall impression. The small bits of applause add some irony to this recording - who knew that that this largely ignored day-in-the life of three underappreciated musicians would spawn albums, articles, and new jazz players for decades to come? The knowledge of LaFaro's impending death, his strained relationship with Evans, Evans' drug problems, Evan's profound grief at the death of LaFaro, and the fact that Evans is now gone all color my experience of this recording significantly. This album is a microcosm of the many tragedies and occasional triumphs in the strange and sometimes wonderful world of jazz. And a truly fine listening experience.

OK, "Macho Man," after you are "In the Navy" and you've spent the night at the "Y.M.C.A" in New York City, you should "Go West" to "San Francisco" where they "Can't Stop the Music" and then, when it gets too foggy, head out for some sun in "Key West." All the great Village People classics are in this collection. Whether you fancy yourself the Construction Worker or the Native American, you'll be happy with this raucous collection of grandly cheeky hits. These are big disco songs, with thinly veiled innuendoes; the flamboyant and triumphant lyrics will get you on your feet, arms in a "Y," in no time. --Beth Bessmer

The title of this record says it all........2007-05-14
This particular record edged out the other "Best of" collections of the Village People on my shopping list because of the quality of the "filler" songs on the disc. This was actually purchased as a present for an uncle of mine who loves the group. It just so happens that he has quite the colorful Fire Island story from his days as a pilot and this cd just so happened to be the only best of collection that included a song of the same name.
Also a very energetic, dancable record, definitely the treatment to get your mood up and your blood flowing in the morning, during rush hour traffic, or any ol' time you feel like bobbing in your seat or dancing around the house. =)
Funky Music gives you energy!.......2007-03-03
When I am really tired, all I have to do is play this cd and it gives me energy. Funky, funky, funky!
It is upbeat and energizing!
Try it!
Very good set from one of disco's most popular groups.......2007-01-22
Although their prime was relatively brief, the Village People is still one of the first names mentioned when the disco era is discussed. Despite having no musical talent (with the exception of lead vocalist Victor Willis), the Village People would gain a great deal of fame through their visual presence while performing songs co-written by their visionary producer Jacques Morali and several professional songwriters. In retrospect, their story isn't much different from the New Kids on the Block who would become much bigger stars a decade later. However, while the New Kids on the Block's big hits have largely become forgotten, the Village People's big hits have aged quite well. Their undeniable high point is "Y.M.C.A.", which is not only one of the biggest hits of the disco era but remains a favorite in both the dance clubs and weddings nearly 30 years later. The big hits "Macho Man" and "In the Navy" possess memorable choruses, catchy hooks, and killer bass lines and still sound great. The lesser known tracks "San Francisco (You've Got Me)", "In Hollywood (Everybody Is a Star)", and "Key West" are all very funky and on the level of their hit singles. The quality drops noticeably after this as the songs range from decent ("Fire Island, "Can't Stop the Music", "Village People") to mediocre ("Go West", "Hot Cop"). Also worth noting is that listening to the album in its entirety can become a chore since most of the songs begin with a drum beat in the same exact tempo. All told, The Best of Village People is a good compilation of one of the most popular disco groups of the 1970's. Highly recommended to fans of the disco years.
Awesome!!.......2004-05-21
I love this album. It's fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys great music.
Party on a platter!.......2004-04-16
If the Casablanca record label was the Monarchy of the Disco Nation, The Village People were their finest ambassadors. More than any of the prefabricated disco machines that the decade produced, it is the VP's cavity provoking bubble-gum dance records that made strobe lights and disco balls accessible and acceptable to party people of all stripes. Add in the undeniable fact that the innuendo laden singles and their stereotyped get-ups made gay subculture visible and you can actually add the term "culturally significant" to the Village People's list of accomplishments.
But all that pales when placed next to the vibrancy of this solid collection of 12 inch singles and dance mixes. Like all of the best dance floor confectionary creampuffs, the songs here convey a kooky innocence (the Navy had to let in on the joke before they backed off their decision to use "In The Navy" as a recruitment jingle) that remains timeless. And in the post-AIDS decades, the more obvious 70's call to the disenfranchised like "Go West," "San Francisco" and "In Hollywood" are even poignant.
Deny it if you dare, but secretly you know this stuff is great. Just see if your limbs don't start contorting into the alphabet next time "YMCA" gets played on some football arena PA or at your next company party. I double dog dare ya.

It's a long way from the Mississippi Delta to the Sahara Desert. But somehow the snaking blues lines and hypnotic guitar figures of bluesman like John Lee Hooker resonated with the members of Tinariwen, who set aside traditional Touareg instruments two decades ago to play electric guitar. The follow-up to 2000's spellbinding Radio Tisdas, Amassakoul again features galloping rhythms, desert wails and, of course, electric guitar--up to four guitars snarl, burr and howl to create the spacious interlocking desert blues groove that is this group's calling card. Eerie call-and-response vocals draw listeners in as well, conjuring up visions of a night around the campfire in the open desert air. This album also reveals that Tinariwen is more flexible than would be originally thought--the blues riffs are more varied and the music is augmented with more complicated arrangements and better production values. Another stunning effort, Amassakoul finds the band honing its art and spreading its wings musically to great effect. --Tad Hendrickson

Worth a listen.......2007-05-26
African musicianship and sincerity leave the rock music world dead and this is no exception. Great guitar playing, good rythmn and I have listened to this regularly on the road in my car for a couple of months ...but. It reminds me of my reaction to Bob Marley and the Wailers, something in their psyche and mine do not quite gel. In Bob Marley's case brain numbness from ganga was starting to set in even on his first album - despite Bob's Rasta beliefs, drugs cut off contact with the holy spirit and keep the music stuck in the world of plants. I know some great albums have been made by musicians on drugs but only in the first few years of their career, sooner or later drugs kill off the creative spark. I don't know what it is about Tinariwen but there is something not quite complete in this music.
Funky!.......2007-01-05
Picture galloping across the desert on horseback. What would be your theme music? Well, this beautiful desert blues CD, of course. My favorite tracks are "Oualahila Ar Teninam", "Chatma", "Tenere Dafeo Nikchan", and "Aldhechen Manin".
A GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR WORLD MUSIC COLLECTION.......2006-08-23
Warning: Not listening to this CD may cause you to experience a traumatic loss of musical enlightenment, cultural awareness, and soul.
A little geography and sociology first....Tinariwen is a Tuareg/Berber musical group from Mali, North Africa. You know, Sahara Desert, camels, henna tattoos, and all that. They formed in 1982, and their name means "empty places" in their native tongue. They did a lot of low-tech recording for nearly 20 years; mainly rebel music supporting Tuareg independence from the government of Mali. In 2000 they were "discovered" by the West; they have since played in France, England, and the USA, and have sparked a lot of interest, wherever they play.
Amassakoul ("Traveller"), their second album, is a unique and wonderful fusion CD. Tinariwen has masterfully incorporated 1950's - 1960's era American blues/rock electric guitar with their already formidable Tuareg vocals and percussion. Listening to these tracks, I got the feeling that Bo Diddley, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, and maybe even Jimi Hendrix all took to the Sahara by caravan, and started jamming with their Tuareg hosts. The result is hypnotic, funky, and exhilarating. I count Amassakoul among the best CD's I have heard, in any genre.
AMAZING!!!.......2006-07-28
Man, I thought I heard it all.WRONG. These guys can really rock man, I mean really rock. THis music is so groovy that'll make James Brown blush. It's like Bob Marley , BB King, A group of Traditional African Musicians were making music together. The style, apparently new, since Tinariwen( Tashmarek for "empty places" is the first band ever in their country to use electric guitars, is called Tishoumaren and represents the voice of the Tuareg people.BUY this and you won't be disappointed!!!
so cool that I now wish to die.......2006-03-23
The connection between West African music and American blues has never been as clear or as powerful as it is on Amassakoul. The modal nature of much of the playing reminds you of John Lee Hooker, but there's no doubt that this is the well he was drawing from, not the other way 'round. I think any fan of West African music will absolutely love Amassakoul

Amazon.com essential recording
Sensing that the Beatles, Stones, and Who were radically transforming rock music by turning it literate and conceptual, Ray Davies decided the Kinks should be his vehicle to explore his unusual longing for a simpler time when the English empire was not in decline. A reliance on English music hall tradition and sentiments indicated in titles such as "Last of the Steam-Powered Trains," "Picture Book," and "Village Green" clearly show Davies's nostalgia streak. Davies's singing has always been rough and non-Kinks fans may have trouble getting past his sloppy pitch. But for those listening closely, the tales are one of a kind. --Rob O'Connor

Middlin to fairly great .......2007-06-26
I'm ashamed to say I found this because of the 'Picture Book' song associated with a certain ad for a certain photo printer. It just got stuck in my head, and I should have known. Whenever you have a great song stuck in your head and you don't know who it's by, it's usually by The Kinks.
Initially I was disappointed that I had purchased a CD for one song and the rest was jolly crap. But the more I listened to it, I pardoned the fact that it could have been produced a bit more carefully and now they've got me hooked.
The rest of the darn album is stuck in my head, and it's a good, sweet, concept album, you really need to listen to whole thing to 'get it' and for it to be at its best. Nice and poppy, fun for the whole family, it grows on you like honeysuckle. Finally: 2 stars, no 3 stars, no - 4 stars.
Ray Davies is a remarkable talent.......2007-06-09
I am amused to read how folks seem to think that Ray Davies is nostalgic. I do not believe this. He is an observer. He writes about what he sees and what he hears and puts a personal twist on it. Listen to 'Come Dancing' - this terrific piece comes from listening to his elder sister talk about her 'younger days', which people like me can identify with only too easily. He is a wit and has written a variety of interesting songs. 'Village Green' is an amusement, a 'pastiche' - a description of a dream-like time and place which one is uncertain if it ever truly existed. This is not uncommon in English (not British!) history - afterall, did 'Merrie England' ever really exist? Had The Kinks not been refused a visa to tour the US early in their career, Ray Davies would be revered today by a wider audience in this country and perhaps might be seen as the natural successor to John Lennon (I can hear the cries of horror ....... but pay attention to the words of many of his songs ...... they ain't simple pop songs!) The man is a remarkable talent. He is, at times, laconic and acidic, and always interesting. The early potential of Ray Davies can be heard in 'See my friends', 'Waterloo Sunset', 'Victoria' and 'Lola' etc - but do not dismiss any of the other early material. VGPS is both interesting and charming and a pleasure to listen to both 'then' and 'now'. If you have not heard it, give it a listen ..... you won't regret it.
Memories of people can remain.......2007-02-18
From the superlative music year of 1968 comes THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY, the KINKS very best album. This one has gotten better with the passage of time-- a rarity. VILLAGE GREEN belongs in the collection of any 1960s or British rock fan. If you've never heard it, take advantage of the sound samples provided-- then you'll know what to do! And if you once had this on vinyl... well, what are you waiting for?
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 39:48
God Save The Kinks!.......2007-02-08
Part 3 of the Kinks trilogy starting with Face to Face, then Something else...This is the best of the 3 and is a genuine masterpiece.
Ray Davies was at the top of his game here.
THE LAST OF THE GOOD OLD, STEAM POWERED, ROCK AND ROLL.......2006-12-20
People take pictures of each other, just to prove that they really existed.
Recently I've been doing a lot of digging into psychedelic era sixties stuff that I have missed over the years. Out of all the albums that I went out and purchased for either the first time, or to get back the albums I lost long ago... this is outright, the coolest. The Kinks are one of the coolest anyways, but this one....
Lets just say, IMHO, that The Kinks delivered what I consider to be the real "first" concept rock and roll album. After all, Sgt. Peppers, wasn't really a concept album, The Beatles even said so themselves. In the time frame between late '66 and early '68, just about every hip band of the day put out at least one psychedelic disc.. some good, some very bad. The Kinks, were not a psychedelic band, and don't try to be really... but they took that psychedelic vibe and added their own groove.
The album chugs out the rock and roll, in that light and airy british pop rock sort of way, but the tunes are so good. Each individual.
Look at reviews for the 1979 Clash album, London Calling. Lots of people refer to it as The Clash's "Sgt. Pepper" album. What they really mean to say is that London Calling was their "Village Green."
The trippy songs are TRIPPY, the rockin songs are ROCKIN', and the lyrics are perfect, in that Ray Davies and his magic pen sort of way.
If you are new to this album I guarantee it will go down like this. Upon first listen, you'll be like "ok, not bad", and probably hand pick about three tunes out of the mix that made the album worth it. By listen number two, you will up the number to seven... and you will probably listen to single songs about three or four times in row, because they will blow your mind. Before long you will realize that this little gem, is probably one of the coolest records ever made, especially for psychedelic sixties. You will say "Gosh Darrrrrrrrn-it, isn't this a great album."
It's all about The Village Green. By the way, is it me, or did Ray Davies really despise photographs? Or was it just that jerk, Tom the grocer, ever since he bought that grocery?
Highly reccomended listening.

So Beautiful........2007-07-08
A couple of Kabib Koite songs came stock with my new computer, and the soothing rhythms, vocals and well, amazing musicality stunned me. He is now one of my favorite artists. His music is so completely human it can be instantly recognized and appreciated by a ear of any nationality.
No Cigarette.......2007-01-26
I first heard of this album whilst in Senegal and what a gem it is.
If you want to dip your toes into African music, this would be a fine starter,Habib has a great voice with great depth and his band Bamada just add to the great sound.
PURELY FABULOUS!!.......2005-06-10
Habib Koite is a modern guitar and vocal virtuoso who uses a mixture of traditional African (Mali) styles of playing and languages to deliver beautiful, moving and pure music. It is a must-buy for any lover of World Beat Music. I saw his music video on Link-TV and had to have much more.
Pure joy. .......2005-03-12
I've worn out my first copy. Language need not be a barrier to anyone. I use this music with my special education pre-school class; it inspires instant bliss, which is preferable to a time out any day. Gorgeous layers of sound and lyrics. See them in concert if you can.
actually, plenty of "anglophones" DIG this music !!.......2005-03-11
J'ecris egalement pour le moment en Francais, mais, ecoutez mois quand je dit tres emphatiquement qu'il y a beaucoup des gens qui parlent Anglais et qui aiment cette musique vraiment ! bien sur !
Anyway, for you English speakers, I was just saying that, to answer a bit what the previous reviewer said in French (that not many English-speaking readers would be interested in this music). NOT SO ! This music is fantastic !! Why, it even manages to *gasp* cross language barriers ! Imagine that !
Seriously, folks, this is is great stuff -- a real find. I listen to music from all over the world all the time, and when this artist rolled around on my random 400-shuffle CD carousel I said "Wow ! What is THAT ?" and proceeded to take it OUT of the carousel player so that I could enjoy it repeatedly in my car.
Est-ce que cela suffit pour l'evidence de l'appreciation de cette musique d'Afrique selon les "anglophones", mon ami ? ;-)
