The 1997 Academy Award winner for Best Dramatic Score, James Horner's Titanic was the first soundtrack to reach the No. 1 slot on the Billboard charts in two decades; it also seemed to rival the Big Mac in sales for the year. And what can we say about Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"; would "ubiquitous" suffice?

Horner's combination of synths, chorale, and orchestra perfectly underscores the action in director James Cameron's 20th-century melodrama. It's a finely honed piece of Hollywood craftsmanship from a composer who has tackled more musically adventuresome projects in his career. FYI: Horner's follow-up to Titanic was the score for a different disaster: Deep Impact. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Not memorable? I digress!.......2007-06-03

My review is not only to express the love I feel for this soundtrack, but to also to serve as a rebuttal for less favorable reviews.

James Horner's music for Titanic is just wonderful. I cannot even begin to describe what it means to me, personally. Every song is beautiful. Each portrays the emotions of the film with perfection. If you believe that the songs switch emotions too quickly, as if from happiness to despair, I see where you're coming from. However, that is the emotion needed to be expressed! Titanic was a disaster. So many of the passengers were filled with hope and happiness, and then it all came crashing down upon them. It all happened so quickly. For those who say the music is not very memorable, I disagree completely. I put the soundtrack on in the car, and my brother (who is currently 12 years old) remembered it immediately. He has not seen the movie since 1998, when he was three years old. That, to me, proves that this soundtrack is not only beautiful, but is easily recalled because of the fact.

Now, you are open to your own opinions. But this is mine. This soundtrack means so much to me, as does the film from which it comes. It is beautiful, and so emotional. I could listen to it all day, and sometimes I can't listen to it without crying. It's very powerful. I, of course, recommend it, but not if you haven't seen Titanic. If you didn't like Titanic, I don't even know why you would consider it, if only to post bad reviews. Again, this is just an incredibly beautiful soundtrack.

Sincerely,
A 15-year-old fan.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as the Movie itself! .......2007-05-26

The music creates a mood that captures the movie and the story - but it also is great for listening to as you sit writing on your computer, relax in your backyard on a summer day or sit in the front room by the fire on a cold winter night. It makes your mind reflect on your own life and is great for day dreaming. The music is soft and emotional and yet relaxing as well.

If you loved the movie you will enjoy the music even more.

2 out of 5 stars Relive the Movie by Memory.......2007-05-13

I was somewhat disappointed that the CD was predominantly instrumental, but on the other hand as one listened, the music moved you emotionally through each scene of the movie. A strange and different way to experience the "Titanic" movie.

4 out of 5 stars a very good cd, except for the fact they excluded some songs.......2007-05-09

Titanic is one of my favorite movies and part of that is the music in the movie. The music can be beautiful, haunting, intense, happy, and sad. The only thing I wish they had was the 3rd class music because that is really my favorite song.
Never an Absolution-(3.5/5)its not the best song, but I still think its pretty. i'm pretty sure the part after the bagpipes is the begining of the movie.
Distant Memories-(4/5)its when Rose first sees the picture and calls lovett and then comes. i think the begining is played again when she looks at her picture and when she looks at various parts of the ship remembering what they looked like.
Southhampton-(4/5)the energetic music that appears when the ship comes "back to life". its an ok song, but I like it better then Leaving port and Take her to Sea, Mr Murdoch.
Rose-(5/5)this is one of my favorites. its the melody that is my heart will go on. I actually like this version better then my heart will go on. Its more romantic and haunting.
Leaving Port-(2/5)this is probably my least favorite song mostly because it has the unfortunate fate of being right after one of the best songs. I like the begining but after that its like a little Southhampton and Take her to Sea, Mr. Murdoch.
Take her to Sea, Mr Murdoch-(3.5/5)i like this song in the begining and then the end. the middle is long winded and I usually find my self not listening to that part. This is when they spead up the ship and they show how it spead up.
Hard to Starboard-(5/5)another version of my heart will go on sense this is when Rose and Jack are doing it. then it turns into an intense slightly scary song that takes place right before they hit the iceberg till they hit the iceburg and come to a full stop.
Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave-(5/5)this is probably my favorite song just because its gorgeous and this is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. I wish the song was longer, but oh well. The end of the song is when Cal chases them down the stairs with a gun.
The Sinking-(4.5/5)its a very intense song and I love it for the most part. Though sometimes I skip over it or skip parts. It's a little long, but I think they used most of this in the movie.
Death of Titanic-(4/5)my biggest complaint is that its long and I do skip over parts. The last part saves it with the scary sound affects that are supposed to be peoples screams I think. This song has a little bit of everything, though I can only place some of it in the movie.
A Promise Kept-(4/5)its spooky but calm. this is starts right before Jack dies and ends when Rose saves herself.
A life so Changed-(5/5)maybe I just like the vocals or something but this is one of my favorites. Its played when Rose and the other 700 people are saved by Carpathia.
An Ocean of Memories-(4/5)like with Death of titanic its long enough that I skip to parts I like. I think it contains the end part where she goes to heaven.
My Heart will go on-(4.5/5)i like this song, but there are moments that I think she over does it a bit.
Hymn to the Sea-(5/5)this is another one of my favorites. i think this was the song that was never used. to bad really its one of the best songs on this cd.

2 out of 5 stars Overrated because of one hit single.......2007-03-13

With the exception of "My heart will go on" by Celine Dion, Horner's soundtrack is not a masterpiece but a bunch of stinking skunks who are masked by a field of sweet smelling flowers.

For a soundtrack score it is not riveting and really lacks any emotional connection to the film. Overall it is just really overrated and the hit single got played so much that the masses just fell into a typical zombie trance and went marching to the store to buy it. This was after they kept returning to the theater to see a fictional tale of love built around a tragic, awful event.

It didn't stop them though; they could not get enough of seeing all those depictions of people freezing to death in the water. Overall a below average soundtrack that road the coat tails of a hit single that was shoved down our throats for an entire year.

    1 out of 5 stars IT'S SINKING!.......2001-10-22

This is a great CD if you are really into buying soundtracks of movies that create a false sense of meaning in your life or if you live through movies insted of the real world. And Celine Dion?? I could barely listen to the song the first time I heard it. Now it's really annoying, just like any other song they over-overplay on the radio, on television, and at weddings. Help! I'm stuck in the mainstream nothingness! repeat repeat repeat

    5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!.......2001-03-03

A perfect soundtrack (only I have the video of Titanic, not the soundtrack). The soundtrack REALLY sets the mood. Very touching and emotional, and uplifting, with Celine singing the final song. I like it very much, though Enya would also be perfect to put in the soundtrack also, considering her soulful "Watermark" and "A Day Without Rain."

    5 out of 5 stars James Horner's Best Masterpiece!.......2000-11-19

Happy to say that I'm a proud owner of this soundtrack on CD.But because of James Horner's sweeping masterpiece,I decided to get it on the SACD format. His music involves you in the story of the fateful R.M.S. Titanic and furthermore brings joy, happiness and sadness in this beautifully crafted CD edition.Calling all Titanic fans out there, this is one CD not to be missed! Two thumbs up!
