On paper, this adaptation of Alice Walker's best-selling novel has all the markings of a hit. It makes Oprah Winfrey's debut as a theater producer, the libretto is by Marsha Norman (Night Mother), and the lyrics and music are by a trio of seasoned pop pros: Allee Willis (the eccentric woman behind "Neutron Dance" and the theme from Friends), Stephen Bray (who worked on such Madonna hits as "True Blue" and "Express Yourself"), and Brenda Russell (the smooth soul-jazz songstress behind "Piano in the Dark"). That team has put together a series of fairly catchy songs that may lack depth but adeptly handle various idioms like gospel ("Mysterious Ways"), R&B ("Push Da Button"), and African rhythms ("African Homeland"). Though the inspirational vibe can get a bit much, softening the edges and preventing genuine artistic complexity, The Color Purple is a great showcase for its cast. As Celie, LaChanze delivers one of her usual sensitive performances, but watch also for Elisabeth Withers-Mendes's Shug--who sings a passionate paean to Celie ("Too Beautiful for Words")--and Renée Elise Goldsberry's Nettie (duetting with LaChange on "African Homeland"). The chance to hear these women strut their stuff almost makes up for the show's weaknesses. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Purple Passion.......2007-07-07
The next best thing to being there. Saw the show twice.... Fantasia is FANTASTIC!!!!!
If you get to NYC... this is a must see.
Just Like Being There!.......2007-06-26
Wonderful! Fabulous! Just like being there! This CD is true to the original production and every time I listen to it, I am back in the theater on Broadway where I heard it for the first time! Sensational score, vocals, and delivery. Can't miss w/ this one!
Still gives me shivers..........2007-06-11
Hearing this soundtrack takes me back to being in the audience every time I hear it. Beautiful, beautiful words and music.
Excellent music from an excellent play.......2007-05-27
We really enjoyed listening to the music after we saw the play.
It was even better then I remembered!
GOOD IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE PLAY ON BROADWAY.......2007-04-02
I saw the play in New York, and then purchased the soundtrack approximately 10 months after seeing it. There are some tracks that stand out for me more than others like "Push Da Button", "Hell No" and "is there anything else I can do for you", but overall this is a good CD.

Customer Reviews:
Interlude is great........2007-03-09
I wanted a CD that captured the mood and feelings of the movie. The score sort of recycles itself. Its important to know the title of the song so that you can understand the music. This is really a great Soundtrack.
My favorite part is the interlude, its a little long but how else can you capture the whole movie in just a few minutes!
great musik.......2007-03-08
This cd is the parfait double of the film.
You just have to lesson it for being in the film. Great tunes.
A must have!.......2007-02-21
This is a good cd, although it was not exactly what I was expecting. I was hoping for more lyrics in the songs rather than just the music, as it was sung in the movie. Although I love the music just the same.
Put it on and dream.......2007-01-09
The music is so pleasant. It is something that inspires thought.
Lots of instrumental pieces.......2007-01-05
This is a great CD, but if you are looking for a lot of gospel tunes you might be disappointed, there are many instrumental peices, that are pretty however.

Some of the Most Beautiful Music Your Will Ever Hear!!.......2005-06-12
Words alone cannot begin to describe the beautiful music of these two cds! I am fortunate enough to own 2 original copys of both The Color Purple & Roots, both cds are incredibly inspirational and proof of Quincy Jones' Genius. The music is so powerful, at times it makes you smile, at times it'll make you cry, but above all, its music that leaves you with such an appreciation for love & life, its a true treasure to have. The music lifts your spirits, its a combination of classical, spiritual, blues and jazz. I wish everyone could experience the power of this music, its amazing, it ranks at the top of my music library as some of the best music I've ever heard. Although long out of print, I'm not surprise at how expensive the asking price has grown for those who have copies in their possession. If you can get your hands on a copy, trust me, its worth it!!
Wonderful Soundtrack :-) .......2005-04-10
Yeah, I watsched da movie a time ago in the TV and the
music was great. At the moment it is hard to find, so
I got it over slsk. It is really recommendable.

good Soundtrack.......2003-01-20
the music works really well with the film overall too me.you can feel the pressence of a scene with the music coming in.Quincy Jones has always done I think Arguably overall His best Stuff on Soundtrcks&Scores fully.you get a whole different perspective with hearing the music combined with the film.
Inspiring.......2002-12-30
I received this soundtrack as a birthday gift and it is the best CD in my collection and the best birthday gift I've ever received. The music inspires, uplifts, and relaxes you. "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)" and "Maybe God is Trying to Tell you Somthin' are my favorites because I like the messages in both songs. When listening to the CD, it takes me back to the scenes in the movie when that particular song is playing. I love Whoopi's expression when Shug is singing "Sister" to her. It always brings a smile to my face. I will definitely enjoy this CD for a long time.
THE COLOR PURPLE.......2002-06-13
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INVIGERATING SOUNDTRACKS THAT HAS EVER BEEN PUT ON THE SHELF. ONE SONG IN PARTICULAR, "GOD IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING". THIS SONG CAN TELL THE WHOLE MOVIE AND YOU FEEL IT IN YOUR SOUL. I CRY EVERY TIME I HEAR IT. TO THIS DAY I CRY WHEN I HEAR IT

Album Description
This 28-track collection highlights the astounding career as director and producer of Steven Spielberg, whose films are inexorably linked with the symphonic beauty of John Williams' scores. With five Oscar(r) wins and 41 nominations, Williams is a master of his art. The set also features other Spielberg collaborations including Quincy Jones, Jerry Goldsmith, and Billy Goldenberg. From "Duel" (a premiere recording) to "The Terminal," this release is a journey through movie magic.

mediocre mess, nonetheless worth having for some.......2005-07-07
If you've never purchased one of these Silva Screen best-of score CDs, let me first say this: unless you're a true film-score nut (like me), don't do it. Just don't. They really aren't terribly good. This one, like most, is played by The city of Prague Philharmonic, and it's not a terribly talented orchestra. They play very flatly, they miss notes, their orchestrator makes odd changes to composers' music. The end result of all this is that if you're familiar with the film versions of the pieces of music they're playing, it can be, frankly, a bit difficult to listen to.
That said, there is one decent -- decent, mind you -- reason to buy this CD. That's for the five-minute track of music from Spielberg's "Duel." It isn't great music, by any means, but if you're a Spielberg fanatic, this is the only release there has ever been (to my knowledge, at least) of music from that movie.
To be fair, not all of the tracks here are poorly done. "Hymn to the Fallen" comes off fairly well, and so does the music from "A.I." and "The Terminal" -- and the "Minority Report" theme is actually quite good. But much of the rest just doesn't sound right, so if you're looking for a quick way to assemble a quality overview of Spielberg music, this isn't the way to go.
That brings me to my final complaint, which is that "The Lost World" is omitted entirely! There were several good themes done for that movie; it was no mere rehash of "Jurassic Park."
For the seriously devoted only.
28 tracks from "Duel" to "The Terminal" ~ Steven Spielberg.......2005-05-11
Silva Screen Classics celebrates the career of one of the most popular directors in cinema history...with this anthology of the music that hits the mark everytime for all the fans of "Music from the Films of STEVEN SPIELBERG"...these indelible musical impressions appear courtesy of the most renowned film scores composers of our time and long time Spielberg friend, John Williams...plus Jerry Goldsmith, Billy Goldenberg, Quincy Jones, Jeremy Lubbock, J. Rosenbaum and Rod Temperton...released in several categories from Action, Adventure, Drama and Sci-Fi sharing moments from powerful classic filming to a lighter side with some of the most familiar and recognizable themes ever written.
Anyone who has ever read my reviews knows that I'm a complete "film-score-buff" nut...Silva Screen Classics has come up with the best of the best in the category of soundtracks/scores...just take a peek with their latest release featuring a 2-CD-Set with inclusive 28 cues of unforgettable scores from the leading composers of the past three decades...the quality of sound, texture and substance is a film score collectors dream...each and every track is a self culture unto its own, bringing countries, worlds and universes under one umbrella.
This is one not to be missed...so many highlights and stand outs...from one spectrum of comedy, romance, drama, suspense, action, adventure...to the other of horror, war, thrillers and classics that linger from decade to decade...many have sold millions in Soundtracks, but here in this collection they all appear compliments of conductors Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raines...conducting The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus...though different arrangements in some cases, still a very good representation in tribute of this legendary director and icon.
A must have for "film-score-buff" collectors, including music lovers and anyone who enjoys a little nostalgia now and then...thank you James Fitzpatrick(producer), Reynold da Silva(executive producer) and Silva Screen Classics...it's amazing when one thinks about just how much a part of filmmaking history that Steven Spielberg has been over the last 30 some odd years...listening to this collection will bring back wonderful memories of some of those highlights and then your imagination sets in...just the way we like 'em!

Possibly better than the original recordings........2005-01-16
Let me start by saying that this is a great CD. If you have lowered your expectations at the sight of seeing "Pops Orchestra" on the cover, I beg you to reconsider. This isn't some thrown-together congregation of neophyte musicians, this is a glorious symphonic sound. I will go as far to say that most of the performed tracks on this CD are better than the original movie recordings. Also, Telarc, as I am learning more and more, seems to have mastered the art of recording and mastering the orchestra, as the quality of this CD is stellar, not to mention in surround sound!! This CD should be owned by anyone who is a fan of the symphonic film score.
A Must for People who can't afford all these soundtracks.......2000-06-26
I have to say I was a little skeptical about a Cd that claimed to have all these great soundtracks on one CD. After listening to it though i was amazed at how close it was to actually having each sound track. I was thankful that I had not bought all of these soundtracks. This is a must have.

Torke (b. 1961) writes some of the more interesting minimalism being done today. His punctuated rhythms are always framed around a tonal, melodic core and are as colorful as the titles of the works. But Torke is a bit more than a minimalist; he knows jazz inside and out and makes use of syncopation and even Modern dance rhythms as in Ecstatic Orange. The performance by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is quite good, but the booklet notes are obscure and of no help to anyone. Still, the music is what counts. Start here if Torke is new to you. -- Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
New Music for Steven Bochko to love.......2006-11-26
What would Michael Torke do if he ever lost his score for Stravinsky's Symphony In C ? He wouldn't have anything to spice up the Bernstein-ism's with ! But the little Mike Post cadences would still save the day... Eat your spinach, dear ! I say it's Academic Minimalism, and I say the Hell with it! It just proves again, if proof were really needed, that any Avant Garde movement carries the seeds of its own decadence within itself from its inception. Those who find this "listenable Minimalism" should be locked in a room with a recording of The Well Tuned Piano on eternal repeat. Philosophical question: does repeating some cleverly orchestrated trifle in a flaccid loop make that trifle "minimalist" ?
Beyond minimalism.......2006-04-20
This is music that you can listen without being annoyed. This is genuinely beautiful music, with a great orchestration, with moving masses of sounds that move in parallel with the complex rhytms like brush strokes of an inspired painter.
This is simple, but not naive, since the structural complexity is extreme, despite the appearance (and this is another achievement). Torke is one of the most personal voices of new postminimalist music. And this is Torke at its best! Definitely a must for anybody interested in modern music...
Interesting minimalism, if there is such a thing.......2003-10-07
"You know, I'm no art critic, but I know what I hate. And I don't hate this." --- C. Montgomery Burns, from "Brush With Greatness."
That about sums it up. As minimalism goes, this pieces are some of the more engaging examples of the genre. It still contains the repetitive rhythms & chord progressions, so beloved by the devotees of minimalism, spun out in innumerable variations for several minutes. But the music remains strangely engaging despite its minimalist qualities. I found that the energy in "Green," "Ecstatic Orange," and "Bright Blue Music" overcomes the repetitive qualities, and is enough to keep all but the most fervent haters of minimalism interested. I cannot say the same for "Ash," with its classically-inspired chord progressions, which became really irritating to listen to after just a few minutes. It would figure that "Ash" is the longest piece on this album.
3 1/2 stars --- catalogue it under "Minimalist music that isn't totally annoying."
Elemental and Complete.......2003-04-04
Yes, two of the five works here also appear on the Javelin album. That leaves three works uncovered: Purple, Ash, and Ecstatic Orange. So the choice to acquire this album in addition to Javelin is ultimately driven by a referendum on the merit of these three works in their own right. For my money, the acquisition of this earlier album is more than justified by the presence of Ash. What makes Ash distinctive is the clever Beethovenian conceit that Torke dishes up. The illusion of linear progress is created in individual sections, but at the macro level this sense of purpose, like water to a thirsty Tantalus, is pulled away. Form follows function, however, and Torke is putting the Beethovenian idiom to an entirely different use than the archetype did. This is assuredly not parody, but a transmutation in the service of a fresh, modern aesthetic. It's as if the IDEA of Debussy's impressionism is being realized with Beethovenesque building blocks (cobbled from the idiom farthest removed from Debussy's).
On this album, the best works are Green, Ash, and Bright Blue music, in that order. Ecstatic Orange stands out as the dissonant member of the set, while Purple comes off as an effective interlude (a breather, as it were) bridging the effervescent Green to Ecstatic Orange. While some have inferred associative relationships between music and color on Torke's part, I don't think we should lump him in with Scriabin on this account. I've written a series of compositions named after Los Angeles area freeways, but there is no deeper meaning to be sought in that circumstance.
With the recent release of "Jasper" on Naxos, it's no longer true that all the orchestral Color Music of Torke's can be found on this one album. But the best selection of it is surely to be found on this CD...
Come Prepared.......2003-01-28
I do not imbibe when I listen to music. I suspect that one could enjoy this drivel if one smoked enough [...] or consumed enough alcohol. Otherwise, you may find this drivel to be almost utterly worthless. I should think anyone with the power of discernment in matters of music would avoid this CD the plague. Wait, I am being unreasonably harsh on the plague.
