This soundtrack for the popular, goth-rooted, X-Box role-playing adventure is another powerful example of how artistically accomplished the video game industry has become. Indeed, its ambitious musical score frequently outshines many of its mega-budgeted Hollywood competitors. Oingo Boingo founder-turned-noted contemporary film scorer Danny Elfman anchors the album with an ominously heroic main theme worthy of one of his sweeping, big budget superhero sagas. But in providing the balance of the music, composer Russell Shaw doesn't so much follow Elfman's muscular symphonic lead as skillfully play off it. Shaw's impressive cues here manage to conjure an inviting aura of non-specific time and place, filling it with masterful orchestral and choral arrangements that evoke suspense, wonder, terror, and mischief with equal aplomb. His dark, Omen-invoking "Lychfield Cemetary" is particularly effective, as is the pizzicato string waltz of "Bowerstone." --Jerry McCulley

Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08
Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.
Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01
Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.
True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18
If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.
lovely!.......2006-09-07
The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.
WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01
What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Easily top 10 best game soundtracks ever........2007-06-08
If you've never heard of Fable, you've been living under a rock. If you've never listened to the soundtrack, then you've been missing out on what is easily one of the top 10 greatest game soundtracks of all time.
The opening theme, composed by Danny Elfman (Edward Scissor Hands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride), really sets the tone for the game. Epic and exciting.
From there, Lionhead Studios own Russel Shaw composes the rest of this brilliant album. Playing off Elfman's theme here and there, but always giving you something original, fantastic in its own right.
From the carefree, almost fairytale-like "Summer Fields", to the chilling melody of "Darkwood", the variety is great. Even better is the performance of the Philharmonic London Orchestra...they do a wonderful job of bringing these pieces of music to life.
It's a shame more studios don't go to this level of quality when producing music.
Beautifully done.......2006-08-16
The theme, which is all that Elfman contributed to this set, is stand-alone, the best track in the entire album. It maintains a great tempo, and reminds you of some deep and dark introduction to some masterful movie.
The rest of the tracks are excellent and blend nicely, while complimenting Elfman's work.
You would almost expect this to be a piece for a movie, it doesn't have the feeling of a game composition at all.
Beutifull.......2006-08-09
Wow, this is one of the most beutifull soundtracks I've ever heard. Many memorable tracks here, my favorite being "Summer Fields". It's all good, I'd recomend it.
I love this soundtrack.......2006-08-03
Danny Elfman is the man! If you liked the soundtracks for Beetlejuice, Edward Scissor Hands, and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, not to mention the Simpsons theme music, then you'll love this album as well. I got it stuck in my head while playing the game which, incedentaly if you havent played I strongly recommend.
Stands on its own........2006-02-01
I don't usually go for game soundtracks (or movie soundtracks) because all to often the music is repetitive, or falls flat without the visual aspect of the game/movie to reinforce it. Not true for Fable; the music is solid, dynamic and worth listening to even if you've never played the game. I don't own the game, but after watching a friend play it I was immediately taken with the music. So when I saw the soundtrack for sale I didn't hesitate to pick it up. I haven't regretted it.

The original 1950 production of this classic played the mythical Damon Runyon world of New York City gamblers a lot straighter than the 1992 Broadway revival did. In fact, 1950 reviewers called this the "South Pacific of crapshooters." Alas, Guys and Dolls plays a lot better as a cartoon-like "fable" in the 1990s--which is why the revival is probably the definitive recording while this one is more a historical artifact. Still, it's a gas to hear Robert Alda (Alan's dad!) and Sam Levene originate the roles of Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit, while both Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye (who actually gets most of the showstoppers) would repeat their roles in the otherwise dreadful 1955 Brando/Sinatra film version. And the Frank Loesser music is always great. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
Perfect rehearsal help!.......2007-07-12
I am a local actor and purchased this to help with rehearsing a local production of the musical. It is VERY close to the material you rent from the licensor (the new revived version is WAY off). Although the sound quality is VERY tinny for today's standards, it is a good rendition of the ORIGINAL version of the musical. Wish the ensemble was a little stronger, though. (The added few BONUS tracks from the movie version are cute, but you have to wonder "why?"...)
you can't beat the original!.......2007-06-10
I attempted to watch GUYS & DOLLS, with Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, and I couldn't bare it. I'll tell you why. My mind kept drifting back to the Original Broadway Cast recording. For me, it was like watching stand-ins for the real thing. The problem was, the "real thing" never arrived in the film.
GUYS & DOLLS is the story of petty criminals and gamblers, and the women who love them. While Skye Masterson (Alan Alda) is a high roller with a penchant for playing craps games, Nathan Detroit (Sam Levene) runs an illegal "floating craps game" and has been engaged to his fiancee, Miss Adelaide (the wonderful Vivian Blaine) for fourteen years. Adelaide is a burlesque dancer at the Cat Trap (I think the name is self-explanatory). Skye makes a deal with Nathan to snag a "doll" and take her to Havana, the craps game. He finds Sarah Brown (Isabel Bigley), sargaent of the Save-A-Soul mission, and agrees to bring her a dozen sinners, in exchange for a date.
Some of the best music by Frank Loesser is here. My personal favorite songs include "I'll Know," "A Bushel and Peck," "Adelaide's Lament," and "Luck Be a Lady." The cast is marvelous and charismatic. Vivian Blaine is hilarious as the long-suffering fiancee. She plays Adelaide as a beautiful, wonderfully comedic pin-up girl to the hilt. You hear anyone else playing this role, and you just can't shake Blaine's incomparable performance. The singing is strong and the story is filled with shenanigans that will definitely hold your attention through to the end of the album. Classic!
Guys and Dolls: Great cd.......2007-05-21
I bought this because I wanted to get the soundtrack from the movie with Marlon Brando, and Jean Simmons. This cd was the closest thing I could find; it has the broadway version but also some songs from the movie. The music is wonderful, and the cd is great!
One of the All Time Greats.......2007-04-07
What a pleasure to hear the original Broadway cast recording of this musical comedy classic! The CD contains what they call "Bonus Tracks" taken from the movie version. I heartily recommend skipping these altogether - why listen to Marlon Brando whisper his way through "Luck Be a Lady" when you can hear Robert Alda deliver it the way it was meant to sung?
one of the all-time greats.......2007-03-07
GUYS AND DOLLS, with a score by Frank Loesser, is one of the great milestones in the American musical theatre. Based on the colourful and comedic characters created by Damon Runyon, the show originally opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre in 1950, and went on to run for 1,200 performances.
The story concerns a handsome young gambler called Sky Masterson, who makes a bet with Nathan Detroit that he will be able to seduce 'mission doll' Sarah Brown. A subplot features Nathan's long-suffering fiancee Miss Adelaide as she conspires to get Nathan firmly down the matrimonial aisle.
The original, unforgettable cast included Sam Levene (as Nathan Detroit), Isabel Bigley (as Sarah Brown), Robert Alda (as Sky Masterson), and Vivian Blaine (as Miss Adelaide). They imbue their characters with lots of warmth and feeling, transcending the cartoon caricatures to create full-blooded, emotional beings.
The score by Frank Loesser includes so many wonderful numbers, including Sarah's jubilant, post-Bacardi milkshake "If I Were a Bell"; "I've Never Been in Love Before", "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat", and "Adelaide's Lament".
This new CD reissue from Decca Broadway also includes four worthwhile bonus tracks, from the 1955 film soundtrack of GUYS AND DOLLS. Marlon Brando (Sky) performs "A Woman in Love", and "Luck Be a Lady"; and joins Jean Simmons (Sarah) for "I'll Know". Ms Simmons also delights with her rendition of "If I Were a Bell".
One of the essential titles in any Broadway collection.

This is an amazing document of WHAT Broadway [and musicals] should be all about.
The rest?
Pale imitations - see track # 16!
Brilliant!!!.......1999-04-27
Totally agree with the other reviewer who wrote about the overture. There is an overture from one other musical that comes close - "Funny Girl" - another Jule Styne score :-) As for "Gypsy", there is no point listing highlights. The entire score is magnificent!!!
Heaven.......1998-12-19
In the beginning, God created the heavens, the earth, and the overture to "Gypsy." This is still one of the greatest cast recordings in the whole Broadway pantheon. Sheer bliss.
