This magnificent soundtrack perfectly captures the grandeur of Edward Zwick's 1994 film. It sounds the way a Montana sunset looks: big, wide, far-reaching, and full of color. In fact, the music is so good most viewers were able to overlook Brad Pitt's acting. This is such a powerful soundtrack that sound editors frequently use portions of it as an early trailer score for other films. Composed, conducted and produced by James Horner, Legends makes use of the fabulous London Symphony Orchestra, as well as fiddle and Japanese wood flute that will remind listeners of Horner's other famous works: the soundtracks to Glory and Titanic. --Charles R. 4 out of 5 stars The Solitude of the Legends of the Fall .......2007-06-19

I absolutely love James Horner and his works, and I was not at all surprised when I listened to this stunning soundtrack. The soundtrack brings peaceul serenity of the wilderness along with the sudden unpredictability of human character (in this case Tristan's). It won't lull you to sleep so easily, but I am certain that is exactly what Horner wants- he doesn't want a lullaby but a soundtrack to describe the feelings, and the days of the characters who live the music. Like the soundtracks of "Titanic", "Swing Kids", "The New World", and "Troy", the music will take you to another time, and mutes out the sound of traffic, and noise of this busy present day, to bring you near to the heart of the past and it's tumultuous times that seem all more beautiful than what we experience today. For the regular people who are certain this music should only be confined to stuffy elderly people wanting a nap, prepare to be proved wrong as a teenager wrote this. I highly encourage you to if not buy, at least listen to this music.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest soundtrack I've ever heard.......2007-02-17

Have you ever seen a movie before and loved it for no other reason than the soundtrack? I love Legends of the Fall. Not because the storyline is fantastic or because Brad Pitt is dreamy. No, I love the movie because of the music. I actually bought this cassette tape ten years ago in a second hand store. I had never seen the movie but for $.25 I thought, what the hay. It quickly became my favorite cassette and now CD ever. While many movie scores have moved me, nothing has ever been quite like Horner's Legends. The emotion, the gradure of Montana, the fall of the family is beautifully expressed in the music. If I had to be stranded on a desert island for the rest of my life and could only take one CD, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Legends of the Fall.......2007-01-04

This is by far the best soundtrack, ever! I have listened to it over and over again, and I have never tired of it. I recommend this to everyone. My whole family (including my teens) love to listen to it. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, Please! Forget "Titanic"!!.......2006-11-17

One of the things that bothered me a lot is that "Legends Of The Fall" was not nominated for an Oscar back in 1994-95, and I would have been more than happy if James Horner had won it for this beautiful piece of music, and not for "Titanic" three years later. Not that the latter wasn't touching, but I think that "Legends" has more personality.
Some people might say that Horner was channeling Aaron Copland, but to be honest, I simply don't care. This is his best composition from his 90's output, period. I mean the theme in the first track, as well as the theme for the Ludlow family, are truly masterpieces in their own right; when I heard them in the movie, I shed tears because these compositions fit perfectly with the drama and the beautiful landscapes you see on screen. In spite of the similarity of the track 'Revenge' with Horner's 'Hightland's Execution' from "Patriot Games", the beauty and the power of the aforementioned themes is overwhelming enough to forget that track.
All in all, "Legends Of The Fall" is a far better work than "Titanic", to tell you the truth, and this is one great, great film score by James Horner.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most exquisite scores ever created!!.......2006-11-12

I have never viewed this film, but this score is a true masterpiece.I am a big fan of movie scores and of James Horner.Almost every score he composes is an artwork but THIS is his greatest work to date. With each note,a new mood is felt. One moment you feel contentment, the next moment sorrow. While each track is good the standout among all of them is "The Ludlows".I am not at all prone to crying, but this piece has brought me near tears. The violin solos are especially affecting in this piece. Many reviewers have commented that Horner is dull and repetitive,I beg to differ.I admit that many chords and sometimes whole themes are repeated in his scores. However, nearly every time he varies an insrumentation or note to bring a change to the piece. Also,on each occasion,he usually writes a new theme to accompany a used one.Yes,he tends to be slightly repetitious, but every comoser will repeat themself at some point in time.John Williams has penned many scores that sound the same. It's called having a "style".Writers of novels do the same thing all the time with far inferior results. So don't criticize James Horner.Just enjoy his breathtaking music, beginning with this, his masterpiece.
