Lilo & Stitch

If you thought Stitch was a ball of fire, wait till you see your kids bobbing, bouncing, and breaking bad to this soundtrack. The kid/Elvis Presley connection is by now a known quantity (check out the many kid-specific compilations devoted to the King), and the songs selected here couldn't make better sense--"Stuck on You" sends 'em out on the living-room dance floor and serves as this shake-and-shimmy session's starter course; "Suspicious Minds" blows off its paranoia for packs of precocious lip-synchers; "Heartbreak Hotel" will have to adjust its check-out time; "Devil in Disguise"'s dips and swerves demand a full-tilt rock-out; and "Hound Dog" plants a seed of suspicion in your own mind: Was that song written for grown-ups? A couple of covers--Wynonna's throaty, work-you-up "Burning Love" and A*Teens' bubble-yummy "Can't Help Falling in Love"--keep the bobby-sox brigade cutting the carpet until a three-track slice of score returns us to a soundtrack state of mind. "Stitch to the Rescue," "You Can Never Belong," and "I'm Lost," from composer Alan Silvestri, race forward with snatches of danger, intrigue, and playfulness, stopping every so often for swells of hope and heavy-heartedness. But once Elvis leaves the building and Silvestri hits the lights, it's this record's two Hawaiian originals that hang back. Mark Keali'I Ho'omalu's "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" and "He Mele No Lilo" sway with the gentleness of a grass skirt, heaping on a classic hula vibe that'll chase off any remaining ants in the pants of pork-chopless, pelvis-swiveling Elvis pretenders. --Tammy La Gorce

Lilo & Stitch music.......2007-06-26
I bought this CD for my kids ages 6 & 3. They both love to watch the Lilo & Stitch TV show and have all of the movies. I put them into my car CD player and they are enjoying them.
All day, every day..........2005-05-20
I literally listened to this CD all day long for an average of 3 days a week (some weeks not at all, sometimes the entire week) for 5 months. I was a Walt Disney World College Program Merchandise Hostess in Adventureland (Hi Pirates!), and in Island Supply, they loop this to play in the store. I was working 6-8 hour days in this side of Adventureland for about half of my time in Orlando (the other half was in the Pirates of the Caribbean side and on Main Street USA). In my opinion, this is the best soundtrack you will hear in the park for listening to over and over again. There were days when I got sick of whatever calypso stuff they were playing in the Pirates stores (suprisingly, they don't play Yo Ho! all day...), and there were days that I got sick of hearing the parade soundtrack, but I don't actually remember getting sick of listening to this soundtrack.
Simply wonderful.......2005-05-03
Before I saw Lilo and Stitch, I never thought much of Elvis. Now I'm the biggest Elvis fan ever! Songs like Heartbreak Hotel and Suspicious Minds become permenantly fixed in your head. Wyonna, a country and western artist, sings a remade version of Burning Love, which 'totally rocks' and A-Teen sings a new pop version of I can't Help Falling in Love with You. Other songs on the CD are Hawaiin Roller Coaster Ride and another Hawaiin song, both beautiful and powerful. Also included are three instrumentals. If you haven't heard any of these then I suggest you do, because they are great.
Reminds you of the movie.......2005-04-08
I love this cd because it reminds me of the movie and it just a feel good cd. Everyone needs this one in their collection if they have seen the movie.
Elvis with a twist of Hawaii!.......2004-05-30
The Lilo and Stitch soundtrack has Elvis, Wyonna, Jump 5, and a bit of Hawaii making it an incredible soundtrack you'll never forget! And the best part is it reminds you of the movie all the time and it makes you forget all your problems!

Lots of Fun.......2007-03-03
I haven't seen Lilo & Stitch 2, but this soundtrack is a blast. It's a little more fun than the original Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, in fact -- more "Hawaiian" tunes, and less Elvis. And you still get "Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride" from the original Lilo & Stitch. We bought this in anticipation of a Hawaiian holiday, and it definitely put everyone in the mood. Put this on at a pool party and watch everyone start dancing; it's kid-friendly music that adults can truly enjoy.

LOVE IT!!! Not only do the kids love these catchy songs, but so do the adults. Great for hawaiian party theme songs or just every day dance around fun. A+

As Cole Porter was emerging from a severe depression in 1951, he threw himself into this story set in the Montmartre of the 1890s, turning it into a tribute to a world immortalized in the artwork of Toulouse-Lautrec. To be sure, this isn't top-shelf Porter. Too many of the songs sound like self-parodies, especially "C'est Magnifique" and "Every Man Is a Stupid Man" ("Every man is an awful fool / Every man is a nincompoop."). You also get the feeling that Lilo, who plays the lead, doesn't have much affinity for what she sings, which of course makes sense since the German-born French actress didn't speak English when she was hired and had to learn her songs phonetically. Despite all that, songs like "It's All Right with Me," "I Love Paris in the Spring," and the Gwen Verdon/Peter Cookson duet "If You Loved Me Truly" make you realize that even second-rate Porter is still vastly entertaining. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

CAN-CAN A MASTERPIECE COMPARED TO TODAY'S BROADWAY.......2007-07-09
"Can-Can", as most reviewers indicate, is second-rate Cole Porter in comparison to "Anything Goes" and "Kiss Me Kate"; but any score that includes standards such as "I Love Paris" and the stunningly beautiful ballad "It's All Right With Me" can't be dismissed lightly. This Capitol Original Broadway Cast album showcases the show's strengths (Porter's score & Abe Burrows bawdy book) and weaknesses (lackluster performances from most of the stars and indifferent orchestrations) but still is better than the 1960 film version, which cut most of the score and story, but benefits from the lush Nelson Riddle scoring and features miscast Frank Sinatra's poignant definitive vocal of "It's All Right With Me, one of the greatest vocal performances of the 20th. Century. The soundtrack can be enjoyed on its own level (if EMI ever decides to reissue it on CD) away from the mediocre film and both versions belong in any musical theatre collection. A new production of "Can-Can is opening at the Pasadena Playhouse in Southern California at the time of this review with a revised book and a superb cast which could be Broadway bound and may introduce "Can-Can" to a new generation of theatergoers. This is a good thing for, as it has been established that Cole Porter's score for "Can-Can" is second rate Porter, compared to most of what has passed for musical theatre on Broadway since the 1980's, "Can-Can is a masterpiece. It is genuine musical theatre, not a thrill ride masquerading as musical theatre. And when the audience applauds, they will be applauding the artistic aspects of the show, not the technology as is common with today's Broadway musicals.
Like the songs, liked the singers.......2007-03-09
Read the reviews (including the Amazon staff reviewer who didn't even get the song titles or lyrics right), and had to say something. This show, "Out of This World," and the revival cast recording of "Anything Goes" with Eileen Rogers and Hal Linden are my 3 favorite Cole Porter scores. When I was into Bway, I listened to them constantly. And loved it! This show produced several standards, and all the songs (except "Never Be An Artist" and "Maidens Typical of France") (did I get the titles right? it's been a long time) I think are wonderful. A pleasure. The lyrics aren't witty. And only mildly clever. But they are still better than anything anyone else except Larry Hart ever wrote. One reviewer said that paradoxically, in this Porter score, the music is better than the words. I don't agree, but I see his point. One thing I noticed however, starting with "World," Porter's sexy cleverness, while never always so subtle, borders on the blatant.
Porter Never Fails To Entertain!!.......2004-09-17
It would be easy to say, as many critics did, that Porter was not up to his usual standards. I have to disagree. "Can Can" is a wonderful score that never has been given it's due. Many popular songs came from this, but the best ones are overlooked.
The performers are all top notch. Lilo takes her material and belts it to perfection. Being a Gwen Verdon fan, I found her numbers thorougly enjoyable.
The sound quality is great considering the age of the material. Angel supplied wonderful liner notes, and the synopsis is very helpful. I can recommend this to Porter fans, and those who enjoy great music. Also for Porter fans, "Mexican Hayride" is now available from Decca Broadway.
Porter Loves Paris.......2004-05-24
Capitol Records gave the score of CAN-CAN a lively cast album in 1953. Of necessity some music had to be cut: The Garden of Eden Ballet, The Apache Dance, The Overture. Lilo has a brassy Broadway belt voice and makes the most of her songs. Peter Cookson sounds dull, though in a way that does fit in with his stuffy character. The remaster is well done and as with others in this series the liner notes are fascinating and well written. The movie sountrack version of "It's All right With Me" by Sinatra is much better but that CD is now out-of-print. Given the number of hits this score yielded plus other shows set in Paris (SILK STOCKINGS, PARIS, FIFTY MILLION FRENCHMEN) it's clear that the city served as Porter's greatest inspiration.
A not really spectacular entry in the Cole Porter canon.......2003-07-06
When "Can-Can" opened on Broadway in 1953, critics roared with approval for Michael Kidd's choreography and his fetching lead dancer, Gwen Verdon, who became a star overnight. They dismissed Cole Porter's score, for this show about the bohemian Montmarte culture of 1890s Paris, as "not up to his usual standard." Even though the score ended up producing five hits-"I Love Paris," "It's All Right With Me," "C'est Magnifique," "I Am In Love," and "Allez-Vous En, Go Away"-time and this original cast recording seem to agree with the critics of 1953. This is a rather hum-drum Porter score, most of which is not particularly memorable. Even the naughtiness of his lyrics seems to be there as a cheap shock rather than the usual sly wink. The hit songs aren't bad, but that's about it-even the best of these songs, "It's All Right With Me," is given a too-fast and not really well-sung rendition by Peter Cookson, a dramatic actor in, as far as I know, his only musical.
Thus, there isn't much to recommend this recording, except maybe its star. Not Verdon, who only appears in one song in which her trademark throaty quiver is virtually unrecognizeable (If only her spectacular dances had been preserved on film!), but Lilo, the French chanteuse for whom this show was supposed to provide a smashing American debut. Lilo actually does a pretty enjoyable job of belting out the standards and other songs she is given, but even she may not be enough to make the score seem any better than it is.
"Can-Can" was filmed with the story and score heavily changed in 1960. In addition to the glamorous evocation of Pais itself, what was left of the score, even when sung by plain American folk like Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine, did manage to provide much more enjoyment than is available from this recording.

Lilo & Stitch may not send waves of nostalgia shooting through parents or pack Pooh's merchandising punch, but this Disney outing won't fizzle from the screen, either. The proof's in the read-along, which, like the movie, reaches out and grabs anybody who reserves a soft spot for Elvis Presley, space monsters more wacky than Alf and as adorable as E.T., surfer dudes, and sweet, struggling orphans--that is, everybody. Shrink-wrapped here is a tsunami of options for interactive fun; how your 5- to 10-year-old chooses to shoot the curves is up to her. In a PC or Mac the story scrolls by with the read-along version of subtitles, and in the stereo it shifts into a do-it-yourself bedtime story. With a Walkman, the cassette carries the capacity to wipe out car-trip crabbiness. But that owes more to the story than to the simple tedium-chasing properties of flipping pages and following along. Stitch, an illegal creation banished to an asteroid, jumps spaceship and arrives on the shores of Hawaii, where he sets about screwing up everything for a little girl, Lilo, bent on displaying her best behavior to a social worker convinced her sister's not a suitable guardian. To tame the rascally Martian, Lilo assigns him a role model--the King. From there, factor in the ever-effective Disney formula: wrong-moment bouts of misbehavior, nick-of-time getaways from the bad guys, and a hunk-a hunk-a sadness when it looks like all's lost (which, of course, it isn't). Ving Rhames and Tia Carrere hoist the character voices to big-star Hollywood heights, and once Stitch-as-Elvis leaves the building, a sense of together-we'll-triumph sweetness sticks around, stacking the odds that kids will return for lots of aloha revisits. --Tammy La Gorce

Great, love it........2004-01-09
The CD plays itself on the computer which I like. It comes with a book and cassette to listen and read along. Good for ages 1-2. Great for 2 and up. My kids love it.
Turns the TV off for a moment..........2003-05-20
This read a long was great because my 5 yr old got as much enjoyment as watching the movie. There are so many ways you can use the book. Before bed he will watch the CD/computer version, which I loved because it ran on its own. During the day, he would follow along in the book with the cassette. Overall, it is a good investment and I like the fact that he will turn the TV off to read along.
Great product!.......2002-08-12
I had never seen a product quite like this. My daughter usually listens to the CD and reads along, but since there is a tape too she can have one in the car or cassette player, and another on the stereo or computer. The story is a nice synopsis of the movie, not too choppy. She listens to it about everyday, sometimes twice.

Here's a collection that assumes, to some extent correctly, that kids can't get enough of shooting the curl with the spunky Hawaiian girl and her chili pepper of an alien pooch. Instead of limning the story soundtrack-style, this CD trots out strictly tropical treats. Several, including Collin Raye and the Jordanaires' "Rock a Hula Baby" and Lisa Loeb's "My Little Grass Shack," are pop-slanted covers that are just slick enough to spark school-kid shimmy sessions. A couple of originals, most notably Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu's "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" and "Hele Mele No Lilo," come straight from the soundtrack, and the rest are old treasures. Pioneer Mouseketeer Annette Funicello's "Pineapple Princess" sounds weird even by '60s standards, but Nilsson's psychedelia-tinged "Coconut," Harry Belafonte's "Island in the Sun," and Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawai'i" trip an instinct to pull out the puka shells in anybody ages 6 to 60. Favorites is a Hawaiian souvenir hand-selected for little kids and the longboarders who love them. --Tammy La Gorce

Happy Island tunes to take you back to your Vacation!
An instant mood elevator!
I don't think these are haole fav's, let alone island fav's.......2005-06-16
I ordered this CD based solely on reviews (I completely overlooked the artist list and option to preview the tracks--Doh!) and was disappointed. I am part Hawaiian and though raised wholly on the mainland, exposure to Hawaiian culture was inherent. The songs on this CD, other than the signature soundtrack songs, are totally HAOLE ("Hal-ay"), which means white man. But then again, I'm not sure most Haole's would even appreciate this music--these really are bottom of the bucket selections, folks. Take the time to listen to the samples provided by Amazon and you'll see how annoying most of the tracks are. My suggestion, don't waste your money on this fake'i, buy the original soundtrack for its Hawaiian originals and bonus-familiar-everyday-favorites, then look for a real Hawaiian CD like Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu's (the guy who wrote the cool Lilo & Stitch Hawaiian songs) "Call it what you like."
Better than the movie soundtrack CD.......2004-05-16
Forget the movie soundtrack CD - it is basically Elvis songs. This is by far the better choice of fun and upbeat Hawaiian tunes. Kids and adults alike are sure to enjoy this CD if you loved the movie.
music fan.......2003-11-23
this CD is better than the soundtrack...while am old enough to appreciate and remember elvis in hawaii movies, his music doesn't make you feel like you're in hawaii...this CD more closely gives the island flavor than the soundtrack...if you are looking for the "island sound" or flavor, this CD is better than the soundtrack. This CD gave impetus for me (novice afficianado Hawaiian music) to dig deeper into the traditional Hawaiian music genre. Our whole family enjoys this CD...hope you like it as much as we do.
