Writer-director Alexander Payne's critically acclaimed, multi-Academy Award nominated mid-life-crisis/road trip comedy fuses the sensibilities of 50's/60's Italian farce with the edgier, character-driven ethos of 70's American films. The director admits the film's musical score was largely inspired by the former's Neapolitan jazz sensibilities (and the work of Piero Umiliani in particular), as skillfully evoked by composer Rolfe Kent, Payne's previous collaborator on About Schmidt and Election. Some instrumental choices and rhythmic quirks are clearly evocative winks at that Italian canon, yet Kent has produced a bright, focused modern score that is anything but slavish to its inspirations. Marrying the inherently expansive nature of jazz to the brutal time constraints of film scoring has never been easy, but using an all-star 10-piece ensemble (featuring notable contributions from pianist Ron Feuer, Roger Burn on vibes, flautist Pedro Eustache, the sax of Dan Higgins and percussionist Alex Acuna), Kent does it here with deceptive ease, producing a breezy suite of jazz cues that pulses with playful, upbeat cool. --Jerry McCulley

Product Description
"Sideways" is the story of Miles (Paul Giamatti), a failed novelist, and his soon-to-be-married friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church), a washed-up actor. To salute the remains of their youth, they take a road trip before Jack's wedding. A serious wine enthusiast, Miles is determined to educate Jack on the region's beloved Pino Noir, but Jack is more interested in living his bachelorhood to the hilt. Trouble ensues with wine and women, and the duo come to some profound realizations as they come to terms with maturity. The jazz-based score by Kent, whose previous collaborations include "Citizen Ruth" and "About Schmidt", accentuates the movie's themes by matching unusual arrangements with unique melodies. The result is a score that captures the emotions felt as life occasionally turns on its side.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful start as a new band!.......2007-06-27

Back in 1996 I stumbled with this cd in a Cheapo Store in Minneapolis. It was a used cd, and it was cheap (US$2.99), and I liked the cover: I guessed it was either some metallic or psychodelic stuff. What a good surprise was this cd at first hearing. Being as I still am a huge fan of Pink Floyd, I was first taken by the wonderful sonic atmosphere of the long songs, reminding me of such masterworks as Shine on you Crazy Diamond and Animals. But also of The Dark Side of the Moon. However, it was not at all a derivative album of the kind you say inmmediatly things like: "this passage is taken from that particular passage in that famous album". No, absolutely no, Porcupine Tree was already also an original, in spite of owing so much to Pink Floyd. As a reaction to those that insist so much in this issue of "imitation", wouldn't you say that Tool owes a lot to Metallica and King Crimson? However, Tool is a very original band. It is in those terms that I think of Porcupine Tree and this album in particular, that had the virtue of turning me into a faithful fan of Porcupine Tree to this day. Being as it is the first albim in which Steven Wilson made some pieces (not all of them) with a real band, because Porcupine Tree was himself alone before Sky moves sideways, this is an excellent album, a terrific discovery. It still lifts my spirit everytime I listen to it.
No wonder it was so joyful to have a new version of the album with bonus tracks. As you know, the American version was different from the British version, as it used to happen with the Beatles or the Rolling Stones and others.
This remastered version contains essentially what the British version was, plus alternate takes, the most impressive of which is the title track, Sky moves sideways, which has some interesting variations in relation to the original version. As an advantage, this alternate take is not divided in two halves, as it was in the original album, it runs freely as a single piece. I am tempted to say that I like it better than the original!!!
In few words, this is an excellent album for a band that is beginning its career, although it is composed of already veteran musicians. It is progressive rock at its best. I thought, and I continue thinking, that Porcupine Tree is the true succesor of Pink Floyd in current times.

5 out of 5 stars You really need this reissue.......2007-04-09

Contrary to popular belief, In Absentia was not PT's first American release, it was indeed The Sky Moves Sideways on the small C&S label. Back in 1997 I bought the C&S CD, not realizing it wasn't exactly the same as the UK original on the Delerium label. I later found out the British version never had "Stars Die". This ended up on an EP called Moonloop, in which the American version was called Stars Die (not to be confused with the compilation CD currently making the rounds, which only the U.S. version included "Always Never" off Up the Downstair). The British version of The Sky Movies Sideways had a short guitar interlude called "Prepare Yourself", and the two title tracks weren't divided in suites.

For those new to the album, it was originally released in 1995, was their third proper album (they had a couple of early cassettes at the end of the '80s/beginning of the '90s, a lot of it ended on their proper debut album, On the Sunday of Life anyways). Up until this point, it was entirely a Steven Wilson project, and in the middle of recording The Sky Moves Sideways, he assembled a band, with ex-Japan keyboardist Richard Barbieri, bassist Colin Edwin, and drummer Chris Maitland. The title track (both parts) and "Moonloop" were full band interaction, while "Dislocated Day", "The Moon Touches Your Shoulders", and "Prepare Yourself" was all Steven Wilson (drum tracks were drum machines, which got replaced by real drums on the current reissue, which you won't notice much difference).

I have since acquired the Snapper reissue, which I'm ever glad I did (since I never acquired the Delerium original). First disc contains the original British album, but ommitting "Moonloop" (the original LP never had this cut, only the CD, due to time constraint), but with new drummer Gavin Harrison providing drums on "Dislocated Day" and "The Moon Touches Your Shoulders" (which you'll hardly notice the difference if you owned the original). The band wanted this album to be one 50 minute piece, but apparently didn't have enough good ideas to warrant such, so instead, they pull a Wish You Were Here by sandwiching four songs in between (although only three on this reissue, after all, "Moonloop" is now on the bonus disc). The title track is divided in two, which varies from Pink Floyd-like pieces to Ozric-like techno experiments to nice spacy ambient sections. The end part of "The Sky Moves Sideways Phase 2" includes a bunch of themes revisited, plus some played in reverse. The other songs? Well, "Dislocated Day" is a more aggressive number, while "The Moon Touches Your Shoulders" is a nice acoustic piece with some nice Mellotron backdrops. "Prepare Yourself" is a rather atmospheric guitar-oriented piece that pretty much "prepares yourself" for the last piece on the album, the closing title track.

Now for the second disc. First off, you get a 34 minute alternate take of the title track. You get yourself some extra lyrics not found on the version we're all familiar with. Some of the material is arranged differently, plus some familiar sounding stuff. I can see why they didn't make it the full 50 minutes, this version does seem to end without knowing how to end. But I found some of these arrangements superior, while others you can see why it didn't make the cut. Plus I love how Suzanne Barbieri gets to have her voice a second time on this version, which I thought was great! The rest is the complete Moonloop EP. "Stars Die" is exactly the same as the old American version, but you'll quickly learn that "Moonloop" was abridged, and here you get the complete version. I was even more blown away by this full version! Since I have not heard the original Delerium CD, I can't say if there's any difference with that version of "Moonloop" over the EP version.

While many people like to think Porcupine Tree's best starts with Stupid Dream, I prefer the stuff before it, and I really think this is one of their best. This is truly one of the greats from the 90s, as far as I'm concerned.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive.......2007-03-18

Music is the universal language, but even on the surface it can be something that can help us get pumped up, wind down, or merely let our minds wander.

My fiancé' was always listening to this band but I never paid much attention, since I thought it was some "new band" that wouldn't be around in four years.

I was so wrong, this band's music is phenomenal and they remind me a lot of Pink Floyd's material from the mid seventies. Really blissful, elongated sounds that are a treat of art rock. Very relaxing but also very intelligent music! Some songs really get crazy and shall we say "rock" well, like the song "Dislocated Day" which is one of the shorter songs on the album.

Some of these songs are over 12 minutes long, which remind me of the progressive rock that was again, popular years ago. Sky Moves Sideways is my first album of these guys (well, it is my fiancé's) but I just ordered two more of their albums on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars "Sky Moves Sideways" sidesteps most........2006-11-04

"Sometimes I feel like a fist
Sometimes I am the colour of air
Sometimes it's only afterwards
I find that I'm not there"

Far from the self-absorbed whining of many musicians (some of which I admit I enjoy) Wilson's call sends chills down my spine.

Where In Absentia is the pinnacle of their progressive rock phase, Sky Moves Sideways is the pinnacle of their progressive phase. After this album Porcupine Tree moved into a more song-oriented direction, but this album is one long chain of jam session -esque music, ranging from the spacey flittering of the first 4 minutes, moving into the lyrical swooping drug induced middle section, and finally moving to the pulsing, almost Trance-like middle-end section. The final section leads you back to ambient flickering, and then Dislocated Day slaps you in the face like a jilted lover.

While this album takes some getting used to, it is one of their most unassuming masterpieces. I would recommend later albums before this one, this is not for the new-comer unless you are familiar with this sort of music.

(The Bonus Disc actually has an alternate version of "The Sky Moves Sideways" that is 34 minutes long. The whole album was meant to be one continuous track, but the longest they got to was 34 minutes.)

4 out of 5 stars An excellent early CD.......2006-07-20

Being a new fan who is digging into their back catalog, I rate this as one to get once you have some of their newer releases: Deadwing, In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream are all flawless CDs!

After diving into those, go to earlier CDs like this one to see how Steven and the gang got to where they are now!

The remastering is amazing. The digipak is beautiful but I am not a fan of "cardboard" CD cases.

5 out of 5 stars essential.......2006-02-24

if, like me , you realize how the 60's were like no other time, and the window has closed, this is an album full of songs that opens that window on the best era of music to come along scince the classical time. the yardbirds defined a type/style of the time. blues, rock, and psychedelic swirling around in one grand mix to create a unique stew. jeff beck shines on this album, as does the entire group. if at first listen, it sounds dated, give it a little time. it's raw and full simultaneously. if you are into the 60's, this is essential.

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL YARDBIRDS--INDISPENSIBLE !.......2004-12-27

Don't be fooled by the fact that this CD is packaged under the US title of the LP which is commonly known as "Roger the Engineer": this is, bar none, THE best reissue of this indispensible Yardbirds set. Repertoire has always had a reputation for quality, and this CD is another example of that sterling reputation. What they have done is give us BOTH the US and UK covers! Great idea! The original Chris Dreja cover is reproduced on the inside booklet, with a nice essay on the genesis of the LP and the tracks contained therein. As to those tracks: nothing more need be said about how good this album is. Critical essays abound everywhere, so check 'em out. The main thing that makes this reissue the BEST are the TEN, count 'em, TEN bonus trax! "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Jeff's Boogie" in their original 45 Mono mixes; the non-LP single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" and "Psycho Daisies" in Stereo; the alternate take of "Hot House..." which was issued on the Mono UK edition of "Roger"; and FIVE Keith Relf solo trax! Here goes: "Mr. Zero" and "Knowing", both sides of his first Columbia UK 45; "Shapes In My Mind" and "Blue Sands", his second Columbia UK 45; and, finally, a previously unreleased alternate version of "Shapes In My Mind". Outstanding! THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY ! Thank you to Repertoire for another great, well thought out reissue!

5 out of 5 stars A 1966 Milestone.......2004-06-03

"Over, Under, Sideways, Down" or "The Yardbirds" or "Roger the Engineer" was the Yardbirds` first real album released in 1966. They had released two albums in America in 1965 "For Your Love" and "Having a Rave Up", but they were merely a compilations of singles, EP`s , live-recordings or obscure recording which were included to fill up the albums to reach an acceptable playing-time.

For the first time they were given the opportunity to record a real album. The were not given unlimited studio-time; on the contrary; the album was recorded during a very short time-period; I believe it was about 2 weeks. This makes the result even more impressive. It`s no exaggeration to call this album one a the greatest of the mid-sixties. Very tight playing by everyone, impressive and innovative guitar-work from Jeff Beck, solid vocals and great songs.

In my opinion there is no doubt that it`s Jeff Beck who makes the difference. I love the sounds he can get out of his guitar. It`s not difficult to imagine how he stunned people listening to his guitar back in 66. The great mixture of traditional blues and the new psychedelic sounds has never been surpassed.

Even classic 12 bar blues tracks like "Lost Woman","Over, Under, Sideways, Down", "The Nazz Are Blue", "Rack My Mind", "Jeff`s Boogie" and "What Do You Want" sounded (sounds) new; and these recordings still sound uplifting and full of energy today.

On songs like "Ever Since The World Began", "Turn Into Earth", "Hot House" and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" showed a purer progressive side of the band. In fact "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" was not originally included on the album, as it was recorded shortly after, at a time when Jimmy Page had also joined the group. "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" was released as a single with "Psycho Daisies" as the b-side. These two songs have been featured on most re-releases of the album, and can almost be considered as originals. The moving "Farewell" is a another favourite; makes you think of the sad destiny of Keith Relf who died electrocuted in 1976 by his own guitar while practising at his home.

Unfortunately this 2 lead-guitarist period would last very short, as Jeff Beck soon left. As far as I know, they only recorded 3 songs; with "Stroll On" from the movie "Blow Up" as the third.

The bonus tracks make the CD an even better buy. The Keith Relf solo tracks a all solid; in fact they are really the Yardbirds backing singer Relf. "Mr Zero" is not far from later Yardbirds recordings like "Little Soldier Boy".

If you`re even the least interested in the music that came out of the 1960`s this milestone is a must buy!

4 out of 5 stars Roger The Engineer o la evolución del rock Inglés.......2003-12-10

Lost Woman, Rack My Mind y What Do You Want son 3 poderosos temas con un Beck brillante disparando furiosos acordes y riffs, en tanto Over, Under, Sideways, Down explora sonoridades más lejanas.

5 out of 5 stars EPIC LP BN 26246 Original U.S. release.......2003-04-25

The original EPIC vinyl LP has the original 10 tracks. Most of the 20 + CD tracks are a RAID into the YardbiRds Gomelskey catalog. I'd say that 'there are too many extra song tracks'. If you like original YardbiRds, try 'Roger The Engineer', and the 'RHINO' 2CD Ultimate Collection. Both CDs' should be available here at amazon.com. Many tracks are 'Re-channeled'STEREO, In 1963-64 most Yardbirds and Rolling Stones tracks were recorded in natural mono.
I usually rate the YardbiRds HIGH, their innovations still sound great, even now, 30 + years after their original release dates! I'd say 'Buy' this CD.

The jazz is original and offbeat, quite refreshing. Good driving music. Sounds new with each playback because the tunes are well-written and unpredictable. Amir from Wash DC.

Disappointing! this is exactly the kind of music that makes you snooze after having drunken too much!!! Rather appropriate with the movie this music is played in!!! Sideways

5 out of 5 stars I Love This CD!.......2006-04-22

I noticed the music of this movie after watching it for the second or third time on cable. Once I purchased the CD it became great "mood" music to listen to while commuting to work (along PCH) between Huntington Beach and Terminal Island. When I listen to this music I'm transported to a vacation on a sunny day in California.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars, HOWEVER..........2006-03-13

First of all, this music is wonderful. If you enjoy it, I'd like to recommend a disc called "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano," with Jean-Pierre Rampal on flute, and Claude Bolling on piano.
The "HOWEVER" is because I was looking for a particular song from the film that was not on the "soundtrack." I didn't know what it was, so when I bought the soundtrack, I expected to find it on there. Turns out there are a number of good songs from the film that are not on the disc.
Disappointing, but it doesn't kill my enjoyment of the Rolfe Kent score.

4 out of 5 stars mmmm.. nice :).......2006-02-28

I see other reviewers refer to this soundtrack as jazz. Dunno much about various music genres, but I know I dont like jazz. I find it hard on my ears and nerves. But this score is different. Its one theme in different arrangements, some of which are downright brilliant. (Some not so brillliant - guess the most jazzy ones :))) One of the best film music CDs ever, even if it IS jazz.

5 out of 5 stars what took me so long?.......2007-05-17

I remember hearing the song Eyes Wired Shut on The Punisher soundtrack. I really enjoyed it, and told myself to get their cd, South Of Sideways. When I went cd shopping, sometimes I'd see it and consider buying it, but something else always caught my eye. Then I was in a music store in Dallas (Edgewater's hometown, which I wasn't aware of at the time), and spotted both this cd and their next release, We're Not Robots. I immediately snapped both of them up. After just one listen to Sideways, my initial reaction was, what took me so long to get this? I loved every song on the cd, and have listened to it so many times now, I've lost count. This is post-grunge music with some teeth to it: great guitar-driven songs with a strong vocal presence and a nice mixture of good old-fashioned angst and rebellion that epitomized the grunge era, combined with a lighter, hopeful message as indicated in the songs One Perfect Something and the last song Lifter. I actually like Sideways better than Robots. The Robots cd is great and definitely a hard-rocker, but it's a little too much in the way of what a friend of mine would classify angry white guy music. They just sound a little too pissed off throughout the whole cd. I'd like to see them go back to Wind-Up Records, because South Of Sideways (off of the Wind-Up label) is as good as this band is going to get. Favorite tracks are Eyes Wired Shut, The Story Of, One Perfect Something, and Quitter. Check it out and enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Rather lame and predictable.......2007-05-07

Well, it's not BAD...just not different. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing stands out on this album. I like music, and have 400+ CDs so far.

They're just another mediocre band stuck in the pack churning out radio-friendly tunes, complete with bland lyrics and uninventive guitar.

Two stars perhaps because of good quality production? No, the music is so bland an unimaginative it puts me to sleep. Buy only if you need a sleep aid.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Debut, Not Enough Personality........2006-06-09

You may be asking yourself: What ever happened to Edgewater? Afterall, in 2004, they debuted with a rather impressive and accessible album by the name of "South Of Sideways." They were labelmates with some big name acts like Seether, Finger Eleven and Evanescence, and their record label, Wind-Up was pushing this CD so hard, you could buy it for a price in the single digits in some stores. It seems they had everything all lined up. A great sound, great connections. Unfortunately, Edgewater never quite reached the heights of stardom like some would have predicted.

Fortunately, however, the band is still around. In fact, they are in the process of releasing a new CD by the name of "We're Not Robots," as can be concluded by their rather cryptic homepage. As for "South Of Sideways," their debut, this is simply a solid mainstream rock effort. I have to say that every song on here is good, with "Eyes Wired Shut," "Break Me Out" "Lifter" and "Sweet Suffocation" being the cream of the crop. It's a bit odd that this band never got the attention that they deserved, but at the same time, it isn't surprising. These guys sound a lot like other new bands of the time, such as Lo-Pro, Strata, Crossfade, and so on and so on.

Edgewater did and still do have a great sound, but part of what drags this debut a bit is the fact that there are no surprises. The band hardly covers any new ground, and you can bet you own a few CD's that can be likened to this one. Maybe now that they are free of a major label, they can develop a sound that is a little more fresh and challenging. In the meantime, "South Of Sideways," despite it's originality issues, is still a worthy listen and recommended to all who love a solid melodic modern rock sound.

5 out of 5 stars From first to last!!!.......2006-04-08

This CD just grabs you from the first riff of track #1 to the melodic vocals on the last tune. Their cd rocks all the way through especially the song "One Perfect Something" and they are even better live.

4 out of 5 stars Great balance.......2005-10-07

What else can be said but a glorious balance between the whole band. Edgewater surprised the hell out of me when I heard them first. I was expecting some mediocre band like Trapt to have a couple of good songs but no real impact. Needless to say I was wowed to the point of no return. The only thing they did wrong was to do the typical Nu Metal trend and put the slowest song as the last track. Besides that I give them two snaps in a circle.

Album Description

John Foxx and electro DJ Louis Gordon release Sideways, their fifth album since meeting up just over 10 years ago. The album brings together sci-fi-themed electronic pop songs with trash psychedelia and film music to create the pair's most adventurous recordings to date. In fact, over 25 years after launching his solo career with the minimalist electro pop of Metamatic, Foxx has been enjoying a recent renaissance. In addition to the critically acclaimed From Trash, Foxx brought to life his Tiny Colour Movies album with a stunning performance at the Brighton Film Festival and continued his long-term Cathedral Oceans project with rare screenings at other UK film festivals. He also started work on various collaborative projects with Robin Guthrie (ex-Cocteau Twins) and the actor Vincent Gallo, which are due for release later in 2007. According to Foxx, Sideways explores his fascination with 'things that have all been considered at one time or another as trash - science fiction, TV, B-movies, synthesizers, psychedelia, pop music, comics - all the stuff I love!'

3 out of 5 stars I love Mr Foxx for his uniqueness, but..........2007-06-25

I have been trying to catch up with the latest releases from John Foxx that I haven't picked up since the release of The Golden Section on vynil from back in the day. You know I expected more than what I got.

The only tracks that grab my attention fully are Xray Vision and Use My Voice, otherwise it was rather uneventful to my ears.

The main reason I gave it 3 stars than 2 was the full CD that is an interview with Mr Foxx. I love to listen to him explain in very sober terms about his influence and execution of his art. Otherwise one can get lost in his imagery lyrics and way-out there definitions of the world around him, both in song and on the album cover (strange verbosity to say the least).

I look forward to trying out his other offerings as soon as my paycheck allows.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nirvana ripped them off!.......2006-01-03

If you buy this album, listen carefully to the guitar riff of the title track. It is virtually the same as the one from Nirvana's revolutionizing hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit"! I tracked down the single version because it remember really liking it back in '91, and that song's release predates that of the seminal Nirvana single. Regardless of any conspiracy theories, "Sideways" is the best song you'll hear about a sexual position. In terms of the album, this is a ROCK album that departs from MWH synth-based roots. I definitely think one would be better off buying the compilation that includes "Sideways" (I think it is on the Canadian import only). "I Like" is another awesome MWH song you probably haven't come across. "Moonbeam" is a nice little number as well.

5 out of 5 stars They actually pulled it off!.......2005-02-24

When the 90's came along, synthpop went out of fashion. And some former synthpop bands found themselves playing guitars in order to stay 'in fashion' (ie sell out). The BIGGEST problem with this was that many of these bands ended up losing what made them great in the first place. That something wasn't really synthesizers. But rather, that fun-loving energy they had as synthpop bands. All too often, the music became slower and more serious in a stupid attempt to be more 'substantial' and less 'frivolous' (they became more pretentious, really). The end result was typically alienation of older fans without gaining younger ones (as they were considered an 'old' and 'uncool' band by younger folks). On the other hand, Men Without Hats managed to change their instrumentation without losing the essence of what they were. And for this, I applaud them.

5 out of 5 stars me and Darren like this one!.......2004-07-01

I can't figure out why some people regard this album as anything other than great! Yes... this one is filled with great guitar riffs (energy)... and no... it doesn't have the signature synthesizer sound of the past. In fact, there is more voice synthesizing in this album than there are keyboards. But, for me, that is what makes it great. If you wanted to hear something that you have already heard before from a band that you have already heard it from, then stick in that old album. For me... (and Darren) this one was the soundtrack for one of the best summers of my life!

1 out of 5 stars Selling out???.......2002-05-27

Question: why was it that when 70's rock bands turned to synths in the 80's to sell records it was considered "selling out", but when 80's bands turn to guitars to sell records today, they are considered "smart", doing what they can to prolong their careers? Isn't it the same thing?

MWH sold their loyal fans out with this garbage. This is a far cry from classic MWH of the early & mid 80's. Every album by MWH gets worse & worse.

5 out of 5 stars Wow...What a great CD!.......2001-06-23

This album is far from the Men W/O Hats norm. Yes, no synth pop sound hear. It's replaced by some good old fashioned Rock 'N Roll! Don't get me wrong. I love the early Men W/O Hats stuff, but this album was a pleaseant surprise and really a natural progression. The lyrics are as good as ever and the melodies are great! Contains an AWESOME cover of "I Am The Walrus".

Don't pass this one up!!!!

    Album Description

Originally released in 1999 as part of 4AD's mail order/internet-only series, "Underarms" is an engaging and largely instrumental collection of outtakes from the band's "...smile's ok" sessions. Though the debut album consisted solely of covers, five of the seven tracks here are originals, and the disc provides a darkly ambient companion to "...smile's ok". The gorgeous, minimalist drone to both parts of "Sweet Medicine" provides a cyclical lean, and a couple tracks are downright sinister, on par with any of Main's harrowing soundscapes. This re-issue has new packaging and is a double disc containing the original album along with a second disc, all remixed by German electronic artist Markus Guentner (Kompakt Records).

Some of the greatest dub albums are jam sessions. Think of Lee "Scratch" Perry's genius Black Ark recordings in the '70s or Adrian Sherwood's early experiments in noise with On-U Sound. New York City punk-soul outfit Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Dub Narcotic's salaciously deep-voiced producer Calvin Johnson had already recorded together at Johnson's Olympia studios for JSBX's 1998 album, Acme. Around the same time, during a two-day session, the artists laid down the nine tracks that comprise this loose, sprawling, eminently lovable studio album. JSBX was the house band, Johnson the mischievous frontman. So what d'ya get? Plenty of echoed harmonica, deep bass drums, James Brown-style squeals, and lyrics that focus mostly on food and being cool ("Banana Meltdown," "Chicken Legs," "Frosty Junction"). "If you come to my town," Calvin sings on the 10-minute funkafied "Fudgy the Whale," "you've got to know all 16 dances." Damn right! --Everett True

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No Dub, bub.......2004-02-10

I love JSBX, but Dub Narcotic is lame. Skip it, this shizzle aint worth a free download, let alone $14.98. If you want JSBX dub remixes, do it yerself, skip this tripe.

5 out of 5 stars Love Ain't On The Run........2001-02-21

I can tell you one thing I loved this record! It's like one big jam session. It features some new tracks as well as some re-worked tracks from xtra acme USA. I loved Xtra acme as well as Acme and this album seems to go deeper inside these albums getting a more gritty sound. Calvin Johnson from Dub Narcotic sound system does a lot of lead vocal work on this while Spencer shouts in the background in agreement to Johnson's ramblings, giving encouragement in his Elvis in heat vocal style.

Johnson's vocal style is more out there in fact that it doesn't work but it does, you know in the context of this album he is a good singer his deep voice goes with the vibe. You may remember his collaboration with Beck on One foot in the grave his voice was put to good use as it is on this album where we get a kinda Johnny Cash kinda thing going on in tracks like Love ain't on the run and Fudgy the whale. So all and all this is in my opinion a top album.

    5 out of 5 stars yummy.......2000-01-04

this album sounds like johnny cash and fat elvis went insane, got real drunk and turned on a tape recorder.

4 out of 5 stars This CD is ment to be played loud!.......1999-10-05

Like always the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion compines their punk funk blues to make for a great time. Though not alone this time- The Dub Narcotic Sound System joins them to make some of the most freeborn expressionalism rock this world has ever known. Guaranteed to keep your feet tapping. However, there are some things that drag this CD down. During Frosty Junction there is a small annoying melodica solo and Chicken Legs has an distorted echo effect to Calvin's voice, both taking away from the song. On most every song Calvin sings lead. For those that haven't ever heard him, he sounds like a Beck that can't (or doesn't try to) sing right... who cares though- The CD sounds really good for those who like rough jammin' - Go For It!

The only reason I'm giving this CD release a 4 1/2 star rating instead of a five star one,is that I still like their 'Ultimate' 2-CD box set better(see my review).Don't get me wrong, this 28-song anthology just may very well be the BEST Yardbirds single disc compilation ever.Covers all three of the Yardbird's eras of Clapton,Beck and Page. Also includes informative liner notes.A should-have.

5 out of 5 stars Every Song is there.......2004-09-12

      Hi
Every Yardbird song that i used to know when i was younger is in this album. I like the vocalist of this group, the songwriting and of course the guitar work. I'm more of a Jeff Beck fan, but i like of course Page and Clapton. I couldn't name a special song of this CD, there are quite a few choices for favourite songs.
      Regards

      5 out of 5 stars essential.......1999-03-02

This is the only Yardbirds release that cover all three guitar players tenure with the legendary group. Starting with Eric Clapton, the band progressed from blues to psychedelia to the beginnings of heavy metal. Jeff Beck's era is well represented as is Jimmy Page's final months with the band. Includes such devastating singles as "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" (with both Beck and Page) and "Think About It" (with Jimmy Page). If you've wondered what all the hubub about this band is, this is where to start.
