Composing music for a Robert Redford movie is a good thing. Ordinary People made Pachelbel's Canon in D a mainstream hit. The Milagro Beanfield War won Dave Grusin an Oscar for his charming score, and A River Runs Through It nabbed a nomination for Mark Isham's popular themes. Thomas Newman's score for Redford's adaptation of Nicholas Evans's bestseller relates well to the leisurely paced, nearly three-hour horse drama: it's never complicated. The rhythms of Big Sky country are introduced in a warble of strings in Newman's score and never overstay their welcome. Newman's dexterity in building various layers is more apparent in his scores for The Player and The People Vs. Larry Flynt, but those are more acidic movies (and scores). Most of the film's country-music sting originates with the songs that are available on a separate soundtrack album. There's more fluidity on this CD and, at nearly an hour of music, the disc lets Newman's score ease over you. --Doug Thomas

As a collector of film scores, I know the score is as important as the actors, etc. The scoring of a film is the last step in the film process. Thomas Newman's score of "The Horse Whisperer" evokes the mood of the scenes in the film, and takes you back to those moments you remember from the film. Hearing "The Horse Whisperer" CD score is almost like watching the film itself.
Newman's score is a true film score. It does not overpower the film as so many film soundtracks do. It acts to enhance the feelings of the characters and of the Montana landscape.
I consider "The Horse Whisperer" to be Thomas Newman's masterpiece.

Do you want to listen to beautiful music?
After seeing the movie several times, I was always fascinated with the musical score. The music combines shades of country with classical and Native American soothing to the ear, yet becoming emotional at times.
Since I am an elementary teacher and teach writing, I always have music playing in the background. My eight year old writers have requested this CD on several occasions. What more could a teacher want?

If you want to feel the open space, the open range and a real feel for the western life, go ahed and get this CD.

I believe I received a "dud" as sometimes it does not play at all and when it does it goes to extremes in volume. It is either very loud in parts and in other parts I cannot hear it at all. I cannot return it since it is an "opened" item.

I am sure this is an error or Amazon would not have sent it to me. I have had excellent results with all other purchases from them.
