There's an ocean of reasons Nickelodeon fans and moviegoers will want to own the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie soundtrack, not least of which is its cover art. Even if such aesthetic considerations bore you--even if the movie itself bores you, you'll want to dive right in, because the packaging pales in comparison to the content. Skate-punk queen Avril Lavigne cranks up the guitars for a caffeinated cover of the cartoon theme; the Flaming Lips figure out what happens when "SpongeBob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy;" alt-rock heroes Wilco revisit music simpler than what's on their latest discs with "Just a Kid;" and indie rockers the Shins let it rip on "They'll Soon Discover." Lesser-known acts Ween and Electrocute also contribute, and they're matched in the keep-up-the-tempo challenge by characters including Patrick. His track, the barely listenable "Under My Rock," earns him the dubious distinction of the disc's biggest bellyflopper, but overall audiences will be squeezed to find a recent soundtrack as absorbing. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars I'M A GOOFY GOOBER...RAWK!.......2007-04-27

If there's any one movie I can tell you with honesty that I've seen over 100 times, it's easily The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Originally, I had only seen it maybe 5 times, but when I used to work in a movie store, my buddy an' me would constantly have the movie playing, setting it to repeat until we closed the store. That was every single day we worked together. The movie never got old, but even better was that we memorized the incredible soundtrack. The likes of The Lion King have NOTHING on the soundtrack for the SpongeBob movie. Don't you dare say that this is a soundtrack for "kids" either (especially if you know how much of a bad word that is in the movie), because the biggest shocker on the soundtrack was easily Motorhead. Yes, Motorhead, one of the all-time best straight up rock/metal bands of all time is here, performing a song exclusively for the movie. One thing a few people have mentioned is that their kids are either too old or too young for the soundtrack on its own. True, it works best with the movie...and the track list just plain won't make sense to anyone unless they've seen it since it's so spread out, but I wouldn't really buy this for my daughter if she were old enough. If you want a more SpongeBob-y sound, go for the other soundtracks based on the show. This one though, is for fans of the movie first, everyone else second.

I don't want to go and review every single song, since that's silly, so I'll just cover those that I love or were surprised by. As much as I'm against the whiney angst sound of Avril Lavigne, I'll say that I could tolerate her rendition of the SpongeBob theme. It's more modernized, for lack of better word, but works for the soundtrack. The Goofy Goober Theme Song is one of the stupidest things you'll ever hear, but the instant it's over, you'll have it stuck in your head for days on end. Aw man, even just now after typing that, it's stuck in my head, no joke. The Best Day Ever is a SpongeBob staple if there ever was one, and it's so charmingly sweet that you can't help but love it. I never thought I'd say that SpongeBob has a nice singing voice, but it's true in this case. Ocean Man by Ween is the main track everyone mentions, and for good reason. I don't know why, but I couldn't stand Ween for the longest time. But in hearing Ocean Man, I was blown away. No matter how little rhythm you have, you'll be dancing along to this lil' number. Surf music does in fact, live on. Now That We're Men is the kind of song you wish you could think up. Unfortunately, this is REALLY one that you need to see the movie to get all the way. Goofy Goober Rock is incredible, but there's one very glaring problem. In the movie, there's a little scat bit about halfway through the song, but it's completely missing this time around. What's odd is that it was missing in the game as well, so it must've been a one-shot deal with whoever sang that part. So there's a small bit of silence that they loop over here, but I still miss that part. You Better Swim was stunning when used in the motorcycle bar portion of the movie, and hearing it in full for the first time makes you remember why you love Motorhead. Or, if you've never heard them before this point, opens up many doors to their world of rock. Finally, the show's theme sung by pirates is a masterpiece. It sounds orchestrated, with "real" vocals and flat out rules. You'll be in an epic mood after hearing this sucker.

All of the other tracks are great too, of course, but those are easily the stand outs in my book. And after seeing the movie as many times as I have, those I mentioned will be the ones that will be burned into your memory forever. And you gotta love the album's artwork, which is something that net a few customers I'm sure. There are few albums that put me in a good mood after hearing them, but this is one of those albums. As if the movie weren't inspirational enough, the soundtrack ups its status more so. Now if you're done, I'm off to go sing some Ocean Man for a few hours. Seriously.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2007-03-08

I was hoping that the music was going to sound exactly like the movie, but it doesn't. So just be sware of that otherwise it's pretty close

3 out of 5 stars typical spongebob.......2006-11-10

the cd is typical spongebob.
my son is 10. he told me that the cd is ok....
i guess...he is too old for it...out of age for this cd...

5 out of 5 stars How Fun!.......2006-04-14

My son's and I, (my kids are 3 and 5) haven't taken this cd out of the cd player since we received it three weeks ago! It is soooo fun. I strongly endorse this product

4 out of 5 stars hey all you goobers!!.......2006-02-24

first off: i don't have any kids, nor have i seen the movie, or more than 2 episodes of the series

i heard that the spongebob OST would have new music from my favourite band , The Flaming Lips.. and a few others i hold in high regard ( shins, wilco)

anything the Lips are on CAN'T be that bad right? lol

well, i'm glad i did.. the Lips' "spongebob and patrick confront the psychic wall of energy" gets lots of repeat play, as do
many others, like "prince paul's bubble party" and electrocute's "bikini bottom" <---which has a definite 60's kitsch

this cd is not the equivalent of pink floyd's 'the wall', but it can stand on its own, if you open your mind

almost all the songs are catchy, and you'll find youself exclaiming 'i'm a goofy goober' along with Mike Simpson , and singing out 'Ocean man' with Ween

it's a whimsical cd, replete with interesting, fun lyrics and melodies..

special mention goes out to the shin's "they'll soon discover".. lovely tune

get this for a young kid in your life, or get it for yourself, to remind you of simpler days, when the only limit you had was your imagination :-)
