A Mighty Wind: The Album [Enhanced] [Soundtrack]

As he did with Spinal Tap, Christopher Guest has the uncanny ability to perfectly mock and pay tribute to a music sub-culture. This time around, he spoofs the folk revival scene of the 1960s that spawned the Kingston Trio, Limeliters, and Peter, Paul & Mary with a movie about the reunion concert of fictitious groups Mitch & Mickey, the Folksmen, and the New Main Street Singers. Mitch & Mickey's romance-themed duets sound more earnest than campy, though it's hard not to laugh at the autoharp solo on "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow." The real highlights belong to tracks by the hilarious Folksmen, whose repertoire somehow included a goofy song about the Spanish Civil War ("Skeletons of Quinto"), a harmonizing take on the Stones' "Start Me Up," and a tune seemingly about a train wreck in a coal mine ("Blood on the Coal"). Simply hilarious. --Jason Verlinde

Better than it has a right to be..........2007-07-04
The first time I heard this recording was in my brother's car. The songs without a reference (the movie) were fun to listen to, a bit silly (Eat at Oe's) but beautifully written and produced. Only then did he tell me this was from the Parody genius's of Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Michael McKeon, and Harry Shearer. We watched the movie that night and it was a fun and surpising experience. The music just seems to stick with you though and I went out the next day to get the album.
I have never heard anything that is so addicting. The hooks of each song will spin in your head until you go nuts.
The biggest surprise are the beautiful ballads from Mitch and Mickey, so well done and Eugene Levy and Katherine simply ooze talent.
I can't recommend this recording highly enough. One warning, not all will appreciate it. Your family may disown you as you jam these folksongs on the stereo.
"Not Potatoes in the Paddy Wagon Again!"
Pure Genius!.......2007-06-08
Having absolutely adored the movie - the chance to listen to the music on CD is another must for all "Mighty Wind" fans. There are some extra songs not included in the movie - my personal favourite that had me in hysterics was the Rolling Stones - 'Start Me Up'- you just won't believe what the Folksmen have done to the Stones! Yes the music is a send up of the folk era - but as stand alone songs they really do make the grade. A must for any collection.
Hilarious.......2007-01-10
The music is top-notch, but the lyrics are absolutely hilarious. The more I listen to them, the more I understand just how funny they are. I didn't get all of it when I watched the movie, but it's becoming funnier every time.
The music is definitely fun to listen to by itself.
One of the best soundtracks!.......2007-01-09
In true "mocumentary" fashion, Christopher Guest & Co. have delivered a hilarious compilation of PBS-style music. All the songs featured in the movie are there, which was a delight to hear, plus a version of the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" by the Folksmen that is sure to crack up anyone who listens to it. I would highly recommend this album to any fans of folk music, the Christopher Guest movies, or just silly songs in general.
It's a Mighty Wind a blowin'!.......2006-07-05
This is a wonderful album, that evokes memories of the 60's folk boom, yet contains original songs. I was amazed at the fantastic harmonies and musical arrangements.
Anyone who loves the movie "A Mighty Wind" and who loves folk music will fall in love with this album. I know I did!
