The Beach: Motion Picture Soundtrack [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Richard, a young traveler with a curiosity streak that leads him to Thailand in search of adventure. This video-game fanatic finds himself following a map that supposedly leads to an island paradise. The accompanying soundtrack mixes the technological fascination with the exotic journey of the jungle, featuring several ambient electronica tracks (Underworld's epic "Ball," Leftfield's "Snakeblood") and other tracks mixed for futuristic sound. New Order provide the previously unreleased "Brutal," representing the sharper end of their spectrum, with a heavier guitar mix than usual. Asian Dub Foundation provide a modern interpretation of dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry's "Return of Django." Sugar Ray expand their range with the calypso groove of Brian Eno and John Cale's "Spinning Away," and it's an unexpected gem. Bratty Britpoppers Blur remix "On Your Own" to sound like a video game gone beserk. Film scorer Angelo Badalamenti brings things full circle with the surprisingly upbeat collaboration with Orbital for the closing track "Beached." --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:
Perfect album to travel with.......2006-01-24
A really good mix of various electronic music. I was surprised that "Spinning Away" was a track from Sugar Ray. It is quite a good track with a very island feel to it. While I thought the movie could have been better, this soundtrack is one of the best I have heard.
Bombastic Best Beach Broadcast.......2005-09-30
The sountrack really matches every scenes in the movie. The sequencing and timing of the music with the scenes are uncanny. I used this sountrack as background for any occassion and it was just too perfect and listeners love it.
A pleasant slice of electronica.......2005-04-27
Let me start by saying I have never seen "The Beach". When it came out, it did not seem like the type of movie I would be intersted in seeing. Because I had never seen the movie, I had no impulse to listen to the soundtrack either. However, I recently borrowed the soundtrack CD from a friend, and was pleasantly surprised.
I love techno and electronica music. I have been a fan of this type of music going back to it's new-wave/techno roots of the early 80's. This CD offers a wide sampling of electronica, including some of the usual suspects/pioneers of the genre such as Moby, New Order, and Orbital. The CD also gives some artists not known for this type of music a "techno" vibe. All Saints, who were pretty much a Spice Girls clone of the late 90's, are given the electronica treatment on a tune called "Pure Shores". I actually like this song better than some of the material they recorded on their own. Perhaps they might have stayed popular a little longer if they had moved more in this direction than in the Spice Girl direction. Another group given a new spin is Sugar Ray. I had to check the track listing twice, because Mark McGrath sounds almost completely different on "Spinning Mary".
This CD is ambient enough to put on your computer and play in the background while you work and/or study. It is certainly not a masterpiece, but worth a spin.
For the most part, a good soundtrack.......2005-01-02
All in all, I think this soundtrack captures the feel of the movie well. "Pure Shores" by All Saints is definitely the most "poppy" song but it works nicely with the whole tropical atmosphere of the movie. I found myself liking songs which I didn't think I would, for example, Sugar Ray's take on "Spinning Away." Only a few songs didn't grab my attention, or maybe they just work better when listened to while watching the movie, and don't make the same impact when heard by themselves. One song that would have been *perfect* for this movie (although admittedly out of place) is Toad The Wet Sprocket's "Walk On The Ocean." In any event, this is a fun soundtrack to play while driving or simply sitting alone. And you don't even have to like the movie to enjoy it.
Two Thumbs Up!.......2004-12-13
This is one of those albums that grows on you over time. It is best listened to while hiking, traveling across the country (or the world), relaxing on a beach, or flying to some exotic land. The music, primarily ambient and soothing electronica ("trip hop"), sets a perfect mood for anyone's journey into paradise. The weakest song on here is probably the track by All Saints (which was subsequently the big promoted single from the movie). It just sounds too much like bubblegum pop and doesn't sit well next to the likes of Moby, Sugar Ray, or Blur. Some of the songs are slow and pulsing, while others are fast and heavy. The soundtrack itself is arguably better than the film. It's "beach music" at its best (no pun intended).

As might be expected, the soundtrack to Hilary and Jackie plays a highly prominent role in this film about the emotionally fraught relationship between two gifted sisters, one of whom is the brilliant cellist Jacqueline Du Pré. Certainly composer Barrington Pheloung--whose credits include the Inspector Morse series and the evocative score to Truly, Madly, Deeply--faced a heady challenge in writing music to be heard alongside Du Pré's rhapsodic, signature interpretation of the Edward Elgar Cello Concerto, not to mention other classical selections. Even so, the resonantly autumnal, neo-Romantic flavor of his score aptly mirrors the narrative's flashback-oriented technique. His insistence on the cello's urgent high register (played by soloist Caroline Dale) creates a poignant musical portrait of its tragically stricken protagonist. Most of the CD, however, is given to the entire Elgar concerto--an especially effective choice as against the usual potpourri of classical snippets. This charged, elegiac, and easily accessible work--Elgar's own valedictory composition for orchestra--becomes a sort of musical metaphor for Du Pré's emotional journey and gains from being heard in its full context. While the performance featured here is conducted by husband Daniel Barenboim, you'll probably be inspired to try Du Pré's never-bettered version of the Elgar on EMI with John Barbirolli. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
identified the composer of the tune found in "Holiday Song".......2005-12-16
My father really enjoys the music from "Hilary & Jackie." His mother sang him the tune in "Holiday Song" as a child, as she heard it from relatives who were musicians. I found out from Barrington Pheloung's website that the melody was written by a composer named Johannes Fries, though it was originally attributed to Mozart. Just thought that I'd share that with you, since there apparently are others who are searching for the original music, too. The Elgar concerto is a classic recording, a mainstay in any basic classical library.
...masterful.......2004-03-04
Undoubtably the main focus of the c.d is the Elgar "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra which is presented in whole. Prior to Jacquelines performance of the work, it was little known, misunderstood, unloved and infrequently played...she was able to probe it's depths like no other person before her, Elgar's "Cello Concerto" needed her. But this particular recording isn't of her best, Barbirolli conducting the London Symphony Orchestra is highly regarded as the best. No two performances were exactly alike and the recording on this disc being her second performance, but it still paints a superb picture of a artist in full bloom.
Barrington Pheloung's score enhances the intense emotions portrayed in the film whether it's anger, pain, joy, depair or hope. Apart from the Elgar, the cello heard is from Caroline Dale...she is able to capture the spirit and sound of Jacqueline.
Absolutely Inspiring.......2001-05-12
Few orchestral pieces are so moving as Jacqueline DuPre's performances of Sir Edward Elgar's Concerto for Cello. The emotion that Ms. DuPre portrays is enough to make me want to grab a cello and play it (too bad I'm a flutist, ha). This album features the entire concerto, as well as several moving pieces composed for the film by Barrington Pheloung. This CD is an absolute must for any music lover.
Hilary and Jackie- The Music that made the film.......2000-02-03
The soundtrack can only be described as inspirational. Listening to the sountrack, which has been so well compiled, only deepens the feelings of loss felt for the late Cellist extraordinare, Jackie Du Pre.For lovers of the film this soundtrack is a must, the highlight definately being the rendition of Elgar's Concerto, by far Ms Du Pre's most highly acclaimed work.
profoundly romantic and tragic.......1999-09-23
Like many others, I was bewitched by the beauty of this music, let alone the uniqueness of Elgar's concerto and brilliant performance of Ms. Du Pre. My heart goes to the family, for their brave attitude and insightful proceeding of Jackie's story. The tune "Holiday Song", which used to be "their" song, I personally remember it from my childhood as a Mozart's tune, called "Lullaby". Unfortunately, I don't know how to get in touch with Jackie's family, but I wonder if anybody else noticed the same thing. My deepest respect for Jackie's art.

Got a surprise and loved it........2001-04-23
I meant to buy the soundtrack and we picked up the score instead not reading the package and didn't know there were two different CDs... Not only were we pleasently surprised -- it is the best driving music ever... It's smooth and enjoyable... So, for a party -- the Soundtrack with Funk is down -- but just to relax -- pick up the score.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!.......1999-10-05
This is an awsome score. Each time a muppet cd comes out, I never have time to buy it. Whenever I go to the store to buy it, it's out of print. KEEP THIS ONE IN PRINT FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY.

Though successful screen adaptations of My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and West Side Story were yet to come at the time of this 1958 RKO musical, The Girl Most Likely was one of the last gasps of the original Hollywood film musical's golden days. This first-time CD release rescues the film's vibrantly kitschy soundtrack from oblivion, showcasing the studio's belated musical adaptation of its previous Ginger Rogers vehicle, Tom, Dick and Harry and a vibrant slate of songs by Meet Me in St. Louis composers Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane. Nelson Riddle brightens up the proceedings considerably with his romping title track and arrangements that crackle with jazzy big-band flair. As a bonus, the film's originally deleted duet between stars Jane Powell and Cliff Robertson, "I Like the Feeling," has been restored. New liner notes by composer Hugh Martin are included. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
QUITE A MOST UNUSUAL SOUNDTRACK.......2003-01-22
There are many other soundtracks from Jane Powell flicks we'd like to see released on CD, but it's not likely that's gonna happen soon. Still, we nod to DRG, who continues to do masterful jobs releasing the unexpected (and, frankly, sometimes unwarranted) soundtracks in their "Hollywood Collector Series." "The Girl Most Likely," the bouncy (but, ultimately, forgettable) RKO Jane Powell flick --- a musicalization of the Ginger Rogers vehicle "Tom, Dick and Harry" --- is best remembered for its two Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane politically incorrect tunes ("Crazy Horse" and "All the Colors of the Rainbow") and Kaye Ballard's delightful big-screen turn. (The only ditty written by the team is the title tune, penned by Nelson Riddle, who scored the flick, and lycrist Bob Russell.) This isn't film music at its best, but the curiosity factor is charming, especially on "I Like the Feeling," a song co-star Cliff Robertson was supposed to sing in the film. It was cut from the film, but here, it's back, with Cliff and Janie warbling ... complete with the actual heartbeats of the two lovers. Quite a most unusual day!

Skinny Beach.......2003-06-10
This is one of the worst rap albums eva. I got this when it first came out and was sadly disappointed. This is garbage and the movie aint to far behind it. Don't buy this. It's low budget, has bad beats, the lyrics are bad, and have anybody ever heard of these rappers. We know now why they are unknown. Except for Biz Markie and Eightball & MJG
Great Album.......2003-03-10
I took a chance on this and it was worth every penny. It doesn't disappoint from top to bottom. Not hardcore rap, just fun music. Great stuff even if your not a big fan of rap music.
