The English Patient: Original Soundtrack Recording [Soundtrack]

Anthony Minghella's Oscar-winning realization of Michael Ondaatje's intricate romance deservedly earned comparisons to David Lean's sweeping screen epics derived from strong literary sources. Like Lean, Minghella sought an equally thoughtful, yet ravishing musical counterpart that fleshes out a sympathetic orchestral score with allusions to the story's cultural milieu. The equation begins with Gabriel Yared's tender, brooding symphonic score, which mingles the film's poles of fate and passion with subtlety and restraint, then adds the exotic, mesmerizing voice of Marta Sebestyen (best known for her work with Muzsikas, the brilliant Hungarian folk revivalists, who also appear here), whose presence provides a literate clue to the title character's true identity. The film's '40s time-frame gains resonance and dramatic irony by pop songs from that era, including Benny Goodman swing classics and two versions of Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" (by Fred Astaire and Ella Fitzgerald, respectively). Add a pivotal Bach cue and this is a film package that works even if you don't know the film--and that much more powerfully if you do. --Sam Sutherland

Dramatically Attractive.......2006-12-12
It's incredible to notice Gabriel Yared's classically musical instincts in this work. Yared's composition for "The English Patient" excels at being dramatically powerful and attractive without reaching melodrama. It's supposed to be for a tragic drama, and the music conveys that perfectly. The theme for the main character played by Ralph Fiennes in the movie portrays his tragedy, but restraint is shown so you won't have to cry for the guy. For the beautiful balance, you have a track like 'Convento Di Santa Anna', which showcases Hana the nurse (Juliette Binoche) finding romance in the midst of war, despair, and tragedy. Gabriel Yared accomplishes a piece of classical beauty withou being corny.
The selections of songs and tunes which were popular at the timeline of the movie are quite interesting, especially the Benny Goodman tracks and Fred Astaire's rendition of 'Cheek To Cheek'.
The only thing that I particularly do not appreciate from this album is the use of that wailing woman at the beginning of the first track, and then, in a complete track called 'Szerelem, Szerelem'. I am guilty of saying that I'm not pleased with that kind of Eastern style that has been used in the film music compositions of late.
However, "The English Patient" is an excellent album thanks to the magnificent notes composed by Gabriel Yared.
beautiful soundtrack.......2005-09-12
If you were captivated by The English Patient, you will not be disappointed with this soundtrack. Some of the vocal tracks by Ella F. and Fred A. are an interesting addition, but by no means should be a turn off.
The jewel case insert also contains a few photos from the movie's scenes, and an explanation of the soundtrack itself.
I was consumed(and still am) by the absolute beauty of this film, and the passion between Fiennes and Scott-Thomas. Just close your eyes, and this soundtrack will take you back to it all...
great music.......2005-08-04
I didn't like the movie, but I love the soundtrack. Great music to unwind to.
One Of The Best.......2005-05-22
The movie is incredible, that's for sure...
And the music!!! Go Gabby! :) A great lebanese composer who composed scores for movies such as sylvia, message in a bottle, idole etc...
The English Patient score is inspired by Bach, and that makes it a high standard score.
This is THE Movie soundtrack to add to your collection!
Wonderful.......2004-07-29
I count "The English Patient" as one of my favorite soundtracks--and unlike some film critics, I found the music to work just as well on its own as it does within the confines of the movie. As a whole, the soundtrack picks up all the mood and atmosphere of the movie, but it works solo simply as rich and full-bodied music. Track 3, "Rupert Bear," is light and romantic, and Track 27, "As Far As Florence," picks up on the same musical themes as "Rupert Bear" but turns the number into a full romantic piece. I also loved the inclusion of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" on the soundtrack, which I think Hana plays on the piano at the monastery in the movie. A fun listen is Fred Astaire's "Cheek to Cheek." This is one of the most romantic, well-done soundtracks out there, deserving of the Oscar it received in 1996 for Best Soundtrack.
