Editorial Reviews

How better to score a movie that takes place in three tangentially related time periods than with music that strives for timelessness? The hallmarks of Philip Glass's minimalism serve The Hours well. The film, based on Michael Cunningham's novel, tells the stories of three women--Virginia Woolf in the early 1920s, a housewife just after World War II, and a book editor in the present--whose days relate in different ways to Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway. Yet rather than construct a sonic montage of these three time periods (perhaps some Ravel for Woolf, some Max Steiner for the housewife, some Enya for the editor), Hours producer Scott Rudin turned to Glass, a contemporary-classical composer who has had a substantial side career in film, most notably with Koyaanisqatsi. The familiar Glass sounds--the endlessly layered violins, the static melodies, the glacial rhythms--all lend a consistent aural foundation to a story that moves fluidly back and forth in time. The music is scored for orchestra, string quartet, and piano. Those plentiful strings lend a thick cushion, a triumph of tonal suspension, for the piano part, which Michael Riesman plays coolly, emphasizing what are often single notes separated by thoughtful silences, as well as short sets of scales cascading in slow motion. Not only will these compositional themes be familiar to fans of Glass's work, so too will several of the melodies. Some sections of the score are derived from his albums Glassworks and Solo Piano and from his opera Satyagraha--which, incidentally, involved the stories of three legendary men active in different eras. --Marc Weidenbaum

Product Description
The superb orchestral music for this powerfully affecting film is by Philip Glass, whose spellbinding 1999 score for Martin Scorcese's Kundun (also on Nonesuch) added an aura of portent and sweep that contributed significantly to the film's impact. The film stars Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman & Ed Harris. Slipcase. 2002

Raul Malo's second covers album in two years skews slightly closer to the classic country that influenced his early career with the Mavericks. It is also likely to further alienate followers of his rootsy former band as he shifts into crooning, jazzy supper-club mode on these countrypolitan versions of classic and a few more recent C&W tracks. All twang is removed here, replaced with a horn section, a featured clarinet, and slick pop arrangements of standards associated with Elvis ("(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I"), Hank Williams ("Take These Chains from My Heart," "Cold, Cold Heart"), and Ray Price (Kris Kristofferson's often-interpreted "For the Good Times"). Malo sure has the pipes for these reworkings, but the disc is most convincing when the syrupy support takes a back seat to the relatively swinging horns on Dwight Yoakam's "It Only Hurts Me When I Cry" and "Pocket of a Clown." Regardless of your age, this is very definitely your parents' country, as Malo transforms himself into a younger, slightly hipper Dean Martin. You can practically taste the olive in his martini and touch his crisp tuxedo as he eases into this material with satiny-smooth vocals and classy delivery. But the line between seductive and snoozy is a thin one, and established fans might wonder where the old fire has gone as they navigate through this glossy set of easy-listening, after-hours mood music. --Hal Horowitz

    Album Description

"There's a sophistication in country music, particularly in the songs that were written in the 1950s and'60s, that sometimes gets overlooked," says Malo. "I wanted to make an album that showed these songs can be treated as pop standards, because that's what they are, really. It's just that the artists who had success with them were country artists, although Tony Bennett had a hit with a Hank Williams song, so it isn't that unusual for the genres to cross each other."

In approaching this material, Malo and his band--Robert Chevrier (piano), Jay Weaver (bass), Tom Lewis (drums) and Jim Hoke (saxophone, clarinet and pedal steel)--drew their inspiration from the classic Nashville productions of the era. "This record definitely pays homage to the kind of country music Owen Bradley created," Malo acknowledges. "But the Ray Charles album Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music was the specific inspiration for this one. Ray proved that country music can be sophisticated and jazzy as well, and we wanted to do our take on it."

The first of many artistic milestones in the long and illustrious collaboration of Frank Sinatra and arranger Nelson Riddle that began at Capitol Records, In the Wee Small Hours is a first in other notable ways, as well: it was the pair's first 12-inch LP; their first album devoted entirely to ballads; the first "concept album," a program of songs designed to be heard in a particular sequence that sustains a mood and suggests a story; the introduction of Sinatra's definitive "saloon singer" persona; and the first flowering of Sinatra's mature artistic sensibility. Oh, and it's a masterpiece, too. The cover portrait suggests the mood of late-night desolation almost as effectively as the music, with Sinatra in the corner, smoking a solitary cigarette on deserted street illuminated only by the a foggy, blue-green glow of lamplight. Loneliness, thy name is Frank! They say that memories of Ava Gardner caused him to break down after finishing this aching version of "When Your Lover Has Gone." Riddle's clarinet theme for "What Is this Thing Called Love?" is as haunting as Cole Porter's melody itself. And if there's a more devastating evocation of solitude than "It Never Entered My Mind"... well it must be on Only the Lonely. With songs like "I'll Be Around" and "Dancing on the Ceiling" to suggest at least the hope of hope, Wee Small Hours may flirt with despair, but never succumbs to it. It's the kind of comforting company that misery likes best. --Jim Emerson

Many may think he had an ordinary voice. This CD shows the emotional range of Sinatras music

5 out of 5 stars My Top Sinatra album, Charlie!.......2007-06-30

I had to choose between this and so many other albums (Only The Lonely, Songs for Swingin' Lovers etc.) It's not like choosing between your children, it's like choosing between your nuts and your arms (to be absolutely male about it.) But Wee Small Hours wins out for this reason...I feel it. I've been there. I know what he is singing about. I hate the fact that I know it, but I know it nonetheless. I've had my own Ava Gardner... haven't we all? And if you put on this album, you hear it. And it really comes down to that. You will love this if you get it, and you won't get it unless you love it. Have you fallen head first? Have you felt like swinging on a star when you see her? Has it ended badly? Then listen to this disc. He says what you feel and think. It sucks, doesn't it? Frank knew all about it, and he put it on vinyl. I don't know of many singers that ever got this personal.... especially when they didn't write any of the songs.

BUY IT. If you don't like it... well, I have no words for you. It's a gamble you will have to make. But think of it this way... why do you know who Frank Sinatra is? There must be a good reason.

5 out of 5 stars The single finest collection of mood songs ever recorded--BRAVO, FRANK !!!.......2007-06-09

Frank Sinatra possessed the great wisdom to see the new LP record album as an opportunity to create a "concept album" of songs all about one topic. In The Wee Small Hours offers us a track set of songs all about love gone wrong and unrequited love. Frank sings with panache and his somewhat deepened voice reflects a vocal maturity that few singers ever attain. This CD proves it all.

The CD begins with the title track, "In The Wee Small Hours." "In The Wee Small Hours" deals with the consequences of a love gone bad--Frank sings of a man who sadly remembers his one true love who left him. The musical arrangement by Nelson Riddle enhances the beauty of this number and Frank delivers this with strength; and the vulnerability in his voice ironically makes his performance much, much stronger and beautiful.

"Mood Indigo" follows; and this song again reflects the usual high level of quality control Sinatra always maintained. He sings "Mood Indigo" passionately and the slow tempo of the arrangement works remarkably well. "I Get Along Without You Very Well" begins with a haunting musical intro and when Frank Sinatra comes in his voice is in excellent form as it is throughout this entire album. Frank delivers this with a degree of sensitivity that I rarely hear from any singer.

"Can't We be Friends" explores the thorny issue of a woman asking Frank if they could now just be friends instead of the lovers they once were. Frank focuses on the frustration and angst he experiences when their love goes wrong. In addition, many people say that "When Your Lover Has Gone" is both an excellent number and a reference to the pain Frank Sinatra felt after Ava Gardner ended their romance and marriage. Frank sings this with the greatest passion and the unmistakable sadness in his trembling voice convinces you he really IS thinking about Ava as he performs this number. Powerful stuff!

"Last Night When We Were Young" again laments a love gone wrong; Frank delivers this number without a single superfluous note. "I'll Be Around" explores the theme of a man waiting for his woman just in case her latest male lover leaves her. The musical arrangement for "I'll Be Around" is played very softly in the background; and this infuses this number with sublime elegance.

"Ill Wind" has a haunting quality to it with its musical arrangement and the incredible pain in Frank's voice; Frank projects the emotional pain of dealing with a lost romance very well. In addition, "Dancing On The Ceiling" approaches the topic of lost love from a different angle--this time Frank fantasizes about his woman dancing on the ceiling as he gazes up at his ceiling after he is in bed for the night.

The track set ends with "This Love Of Mine;" Frank delivers this flawlessly. Frank Sinatra sings so beautifully of how his heart will always belong to his one true sweetheart. "This Love Of Mine" will touch you with its graceful beauty.

The liner notes contain a great essay by Pete Welding. You also get the song credits and recording dates for each song. Larry Walsh at Capitol Recording Studios did a fantastic job of digitally remastering these singularly exquisite ballads.

Frank Sinatra will always remain a legend in the entertainment industry. When Frank sang, you listened--and you listened closely, too, because few singers could ever merely just begin to approach what Frank could do with seemingly little effort. We are all better off for his sharing his talent with us; and this CD will be an automatic "must-have" for Sinatra fans. People who love classic pop vocals and easy listening vocals will treasure this CD forever.

    Bravo, Frank!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A timeless masterpiece.......2007-05-20

Sinatra at his sultry best. This is unquestionably the one album to take with you to a desert island (with a beautiful lover). It will always be Frank's world - we just live in it, and listen... .

5 out of 5 stars Heartache makes for a classic.......2007-05-18

Sinatra was not really from my generation but rather I listened and appreciated his voice through my parents; I guess subliminally and through osmosis I learned to like old blue eyes. Fast forwrd many years and I now listen to Sinatra on any given day. Of all his albums that I own , both LP's and CD's this is one of my favorites. It is classic Sinatra. The other reviewers hit on the background of the disc, the music itself, etc. so I'll just add that this disc is in my top ten all time in a collection that is out of hand after some forty years of collecting music. This is music for the those quite sad, lonely moments, where melancholy and despair turns to hope for a new day. It is music that reflects springtime, when life is brand new and the diversity and colors of the world are more vivid than before and the new season brings new life. After the shock and heartbreak of breakup comes the promise of starting over alone or with someone even better, we learn from our mistakes. We have all been there before, the heartbreak is an inevitable part of life and Sinatra conveys his own heartbreak like no other. The voice is still young, in transition from the crooning WWII era matinee idol to establish further his credentials as an American original. His phrasing is impeccable. What he left with this disc is a very personal memoir. This is a landmark disc from one of the great, if not the greatest American singer of the 20th Century. Recommended for lovers of great music.

This CD is a lot of fun. The music is bubbly and upbeat and makes you want to get up and dance or just jump around. It's a great way to spend some play time with your kids. And the classical music exposure is a bonus.

    1 out of 5 stars Synthesized dreck.......2005-08-13

Why did the producers use synthesizers for this music? It's awful. It's possible to hook kids on classical music using the actual instruments written for it - that's how I got hooked. That's what Mel Blanc and Disney did in their cartoons, Bugs Bunny and Fantasia. I do NOT recommend this CD to anyone. It was a shower gift. If you are not familiar with classical music, then I recommend "Baby Needs Beethoven", which is a collection of music using real instruments (albeit shortened - no full length symphonies here).

It's hard to believe now that Walt Disney's bold 1940 impressionistic experiment in wedding then-state-of-the-art animation with classical music was a rather resounding failure upon its release. The cliché proves the rule: Fantasia was decades ahead of its time (Disney even launched a "psychedelic"-themed rerelease campaign in the late '60s). It's even harder to fathom that then-Disney management spent over a million dollars in the early '80s replacing the muscular Leopold Stokowski score with a digitally recorded clone, then another undisclosed fortune to digitize Leo and put him back alongside Mickey at the conductor's podium in the '90s! This much-traveled Stokowski score will gain no points for subtlety (a symphonic Shaq attack is more like it), but it was Walt's first--and only!--choice and has never sounded better. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Mickey mouse on cover, elevator music for 70 year olds.......2007-06-04

I bought it a couple of years ago looking at the cover but was extremely disappointed when my 18-month old insisted on "Mickey" today and I chucked it into my DVD player. Our baby started crying aloud suggesting "what is this rap?" Disney folks ought to know better not try and market elevator music for 70-year olds to little toddlers regardless of how fantasia the cover looks like!

3 out of 5 stars Optical soundtrack recording limitations.......2007-03-05

The soundtrack recordings for "Fantasia" were provided
to the theaters of 1940 as optical tracks on the side
of the film being shown. Such recordings cannot be
compared to the magnetic tape recordings made after WWII
(using captured or "liberated" German machines at first),
to say nothing of the current digital technology.

An analog optical soundtrack on motion picture film was
bad enough, but the film itself was nitrate, notorious
for disintegrating over a relatively short period of time,
as well as for its flammability. The prints in
circulation wore out until "the sound had gotten so bad,
theaters were refusing to book the film" according to a
Disney spokesman quoted in the New York Times of March
    11, 1982.

Stokowski knew what a difference stereo recording made,
compared to mono, because almost a decade earlier, he and
the Philadelphia Orchestra participated (without the
players' knowledge) in a series of experimental high
fidelity and stereo disc recordings made by Bell
Telephone Labs. At the time, Bell Labs and Western
Electric tried to interest several manufacturers of
phonographs in the new technology, but the Great
Depression was underway, and the idea of marketing
phonographs with two stylii and two loudspeakers was
deemed unfeasible. (The Bell system had 33-1/3 rpm
discs with two parallel grooves, requiring two stylii
    for playback.)

The Fantasound process, as I understand it, required a
theater to install a single loudspeaker behind the screen
and three loudspeakers along each of the two side walls,
resembling somewhat today's "surround sound." But the
idea was not to produce true stereo sound, but rather
the "ping-pong" stereo concept, with the sounds from the
loudspeakers following the cartoon characters as they
moved back and forth across the screen.

I sometimes wonder if the original recordings were made
with discs, not on soundtrack film -- in which case they
might still exist somewhere in the Disney archives. The
many thousands of original cartoon animation cels used to
create the film images were not treated as archival
material, such as the original Technicolor negatives
of "Gone With The Wind" which were stored in underground
Kansas caves, where the temperature remained steady for
decade after decade. Instead, the cels were either
destroyed or individually distributed to interested
parties. All told, it's remarkable that the film and
soundtrack have survived almost seventy years in the
    shape they're in.

Stokowski was not thrilled with the end product
of "Fantasia" because, reportedly, Disney engineers
played with his recording, snipping off beats to match
the animation and enhancing crescendos. Stravinsky --
the only composer represented who was still living at
the time -- also was appalled at Stokowski's rearrangement
of his work (which Stravinsky sold to Disney for $5,000
because he needed the money at the time), to say nothing
of the dinosaurs prancing about to his ballet. The 1940
audiences were either outraged (the purists), puzzled or
bored (the general public), or snickering that Disney
had "lost it" (the film industry). But some of us loved it.

Yet "Fantasia," like "The Rite of Spring," proved far
more durable than its critics could imagine. At the
time, I was familiar with the music of Beethoven's Sixth
Symphony, Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker", Bach's "Ave Maria,"
and even Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours," but "The Rite
of Spring," and "The Sorceror's Apprentice," and "Night on
Bald Mountain" as well as Bach's "Toccata and Fugue" were
revelations for me. I didn't know then that Stokowski
tinkered with those scores, but now I have a large number
of various performances of all of them in my recording
collection. My "Fantasia" recordings were issued on LPs
in the 1970s and are treasured as historic artifacts.

In effect, that is what this two-CD album is. It's a
mistake to listen to it as performances comparable to
modern digital recordings. Enjoy them for what they are
    - historical efforts to popularize classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Review of soundtrack Fantasia issues.......2007-02-16

Thanks to the other reviewers for honest opinions on sound quality of this product issue. The FANTASIA soundtrack deserved better, and fortunitely, I once bought a 2-volume cassette edition of Fantasia, remastered original soundtrack edition, purchased at Tomorrowland souvenir shop at Disneyland back in 1990. Still have it, in great condition box set, and even the new boom boxes sold in todays market, feature cassette and cd play. Muchos grac!

    4 out of 5 stars Fantasia.......2007-01-10

I am satisfied that the CD is of the original production of Fantasia, which I feel is superior to the current DVD. I hope that a DVD version of the original version will be made available at some time. The sound quality leaves a little to be desired, however.

    3 out of 5 stars low-fi fantasia.......2007-01-10

I was disapointed with the low-fi recording. I realize the soundtrack is from the 1940's, but I assumed it has been re-mastered. Rather muddy sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz.......2007-06-27

Andre Previn, Joe Pass, & Ray Brown are jazz icons. In essence, this was a "jam session" with little or no rehearsal. Every track is a gem demonstrating the virtuosity of the trio. A definite keeper!

    5 out of 5 stars great jazz.......2006-07-11

"After Hours" with Andre Previn, Ray Brown and Joe Pass is one of the best jazz CD's I have heard in a long time. It is entirely standards and Previn is sensational on piano. It was recorded almost with little rehearsal and thus is very spontaneous. Of course Brown and Pass are equal to Previn.

Because Previn is so versatile he is often overlooked as a great jazz pianist. This CD disproves any questions one may have about his remarkable ability.

    5 out of 5 stars Abduction?.......2002-07-30

Imagine to be so unlucky to be abducted by hostile aliens. Well, here's the solution! I promise you can save your life giving them this treasure. They will be completly paralized by the incomparable beauty of this music, and you will surely find your way back home jumping down the starship. Only a question remains.... can you fly down an interstellar mother starship to reach the Earth? Just kidding!!
DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR, BUY THIS WORK OF ART !!
(By the way this cd is recorded with alien technology, the audio quality level will blow you away. Do THEY were present at the session? Maybe the recording studio was in the AREA 51 facility??!! OPS!!)

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable combo Here! 5 Stars!.......2000-09-08

This CD is one of about 5 CDs that I listen to very frequently. Firstly, because I play jazz guitar and I love to her Pass play with absolute purity on each solo. Posthumously, Pass plays superbly and the CD is laid out very well. Starting with "There Will Never Be Another You" sure sets the stage.

The CD captures Previn and Pass [literally] playing off each other's solos and one quickly discerns that there was much fun going on when these three jazz masters recorded it! Per usual, Ray Brown's freshness shined through and his remarkable sense of snagging the beat most creatively, enabled them to play without a drummer.

Previn is known both as a classical player and jazz player. This CD evidences a man with almost surreal skill and aptitude while playing solos and too, playing sweet chordal progessions during Brown and Pass' solos!

Get this CD and listen to it a few times. You will have listened to it 300 times by year's end! Awesmome summarily sums it up! Buy it!

    Respectfully, Brian G. Jett

5 out of 5 stars Very cool jazz by three masters of the art.......1999-03-23

Andre Previn, Joe Pass, and Ray Brown, three of the true giants of jazz and each a major solo artist, combine their talents on this recording session in milestone effort. The trio can swing without percussion and the combination seems to give them more leeway in rubato passages. I was empressed with the unselfishness and supportiveness of the three. Each solo to great effect but then are willing to play the accompianment role to perfection. I especially liked the Cotton Tail and What Am I Here For tracks. As a fan of all three artists I was overjoyed by this addition to my collection.

    Album Description

The superb orchestral music for this powerfully affecting film is by Philip Glass, whose spellbinding 1999 score for Martin Scorcese's Kundun (also on Nonesuch) added an aura of portent and sweep that contributed significantly to the film's impact. The film stars Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman & Ed Harris. Slipcase. 2002

5 out of 5 stars Never ending glory...welcome to the leading role !!.......2007-07-04

I have seen the movie. Certainly liked it. Great leading roles for the three ladies but the star of the movie is the musical score. As one of the reviewers described it: the perfect marriage between a film and its soundtrack.

The music is so transparent and clear. I remember watching the movie and being drawn into it mostly because of the beautifully crafted soundtrack. Philip Glass who I had never heard of before has managed to pull all diverse sides of the movie together. I can remember the scenes while listening to the soundtrack without watching the movie.

Most memorable are the scenes of the three lives of the three women being shown in the begining of the movie married with "morning passages" and the scene between Niicole Kidman and the little girl with the dead bird married with "dead things".

Such a glorious work of art composed with great insight ans honesty. I still play the CD when I need to relax and mostly when I need to be transfered and transformed from this world and its harsh reality into the magic of Philip Glass.
A word of thanx has to be said to the director of the movie for chosing Philip and magically marrying his music to the beatiful scenes in the movie.

You must get this but do not indulge too much into the meanings of the movie or its messages but rather medidate in the skies of this very talented artist.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice melody.......2007-02-21

I had heard one song from this movie on the radio and really liked it. It seems this cd is that one song played different ways and so its like you are listening to 45 minutes of pretty much the same song. Its nice, but not what I was expecting.

5 out of 5 stars The music is better than the film!.......2006-08-03

The Hours is a very good film, but the music is so good that it makes the film seem more extraordinary than it actually is. I saw it at a theatre and, as is usually the case, it was much more impressive than when seen at home. Those who have the soundtrack will notice that the music in the film is significantly different in some places; the songs are the same, but they have different effects, like glockenspeil.

The only thing that would make this music better is if some of it would have a slower progression of ideas in the tracks. This issue is particularly apparent in the Solaris soundtrack (by Cliff Martinez), and less of a problem with this one. I've heard some Glass that I absolutely detest (Music in Twelve Parts) because it's so repetative and tacky. The music here is nothing like that. As another reviewer said, it's warm and the tempos are smooth, not forced.

...because not many records out there draw you in as deeply as this intoxicating recording. Tunes from Ellington, Porter, Rodgers/Hammerstein all figure prominently in the set list and the trio does each and every one justice. I suppose I could spend the next couple of paragraphs unleashing adjectives to describe the smoky after hours club where this performance might have been heard, but it would easier to say that, simply, this was a high point in Vaughn's career.

5 out of 5 stars the entire album was intimate like a smooth cocktail in a real classic cocktail lounge........2007-03-20

This beautiful CD with Sarah and the musicians is haunting and intimate. Sarah, never faulters in any setting. So with this recording her voice is rich and just a joy to hear. When preparing cocktails for this particular night it was like being in a lush cocktail lounge in the 1950's. The beauty of this recording flashes you back to this time. i really thank you for this CD. I will always play it on any given night, with or without cocktails.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah Vaughan, unadorned........2005-03-30

In this most unusual album, Sarah Vaughan conjures up images of after hours performances in smoke-filled clubs, where a few sad and lonely people nurse their drinks and listen to a solitary singer crooning softly. Here Vaughan sings "pure," without a big band behind her, without sharing the stage with a jazz superstar, and without any restrictions on her own interpretations. Accompanied only by a guitar (Mundell Lowe) and a bass (George Duvivier), both of which play quietly in the background, Vaughan turns in a remarkable performance, recording her most intimate album, one in which she makes the listener feel as if each song is sung for him/her and no one else.

Her famous versatility is on display here, but it is far more subtle than in most of her other albums, since nearly all these songs are slow and lacking in pyrotechnics. Changes in mood are controlled totally by Sarah and not by her accompanists. In "My Favorite Things," a surprising introduction to this album, she sounds like an ingénue, singing in a light soprano without any hint of the deeper register for which she is famous--until halfway through, when the beat picks up and the real Sarah starts to emerge. "Every Time We Say Goodbye," a melancholy song, has a swing beat, and "Easy to Love" is sung almost a capella, with her finger snapping audible in the background. In "Sophisticated Lady," slowly paced and contemplative, she sounds like the great jazz singer we know, but quieter than usual, and in "Great Day," the fastest song on the album, she dances across her notes, improvising as she goes.

The "real" Sarah Vaughan is totally in charge here, singing the mellowest, smoothest, and most intimate album ever, but it is a moody, blue Sarah in many songs--and the album is for quiet times, not celebrations. If you are a lover of Sarah Vaughan and ever fantasized about having her sing a private concert for you alone, this is your chance. Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars A real caldron of emotions.......2003-08-09

I've never in my 26 years been an expert on jazz (although Ellington, Miles, Dinah, Ella and Billy Holiday aren't strangers to my cd player), for I come from a rock-ish, punk-ish, gothic-rock background. But tonight, when I first spun 'After Hours' I was reminded that jazz has so much to offer to anyone who doesn't mind music ravishing him violently and making his deep emotions and memories seep through and paint the room with vivid imagery of past-century romance. As I listened to each fold of Sarah's satin-n-silk voice, i shivered over and over again. Almost every song, yes. Jeez, i don't remember getting this many goosebumps since listening to Sade Adu in eighth grade after I broke up with my sweet Natasha :-{} Ms. Vaughn's lucent voice, contrasted with the smoky echo of a double bass and muted guitar cords, is so unpretentious, yet so sure of itself. So experienced. So adult. I don't know how old She was when She sang this, but She seems so profound. Things her voice does are amazing, but it doesn't sound like a studio-chiseled professional acrobatics. Not at all; maybe it has to do with the minimal (and perfect) arrangement, but you feel like you're left alone on a stage with her, face to face. She sounds so honest, so spontaneous, so innocent. Well, enough of it, the poignant 'Through The Years' has come on, and I'm shivering again. What, you haven't clicked "Add to Shopping Cart" yet ????

5 out of 5 stars Simply Singing - Simply Sumptuous - Simply Sassy!.......2003-02-08

This CD transports you to a smoky club at maybe around 1 or 2 in the morning. Most have gone home for the evening, even the band, but you stay - lost in the eyes of the other sharing your table. Sassy appears onstage for a special serenade just for you two. The richness of her magnificent voice and the artistry of her guitar and bass player creates a romantic moment that you'll never forget.

Now, when I didn't know any better, I did not like this album. I didn't think there was enough accompaniment - the songs sounded so bare! I didn't know that that was exactly the point - these songs are arranged to truly showcase Sarah Vaughan's remarkable delivery and phrasing, to such great effect! If you don't know who Sarah Vaughan is and you want to study her voice, well here you go!

2 out of 5 stars Nice Listening Music if the CD's play properly.......2007-03-18

I was disappointed in the CD's because the 5th CD in the grouping of 5 CD's doesn't play on my Bose CD player. I even tried to play it on another CD player without any luck. The first 4 CD's are quite nice to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars New Age Pure Moods.......2006-08-28

This is not one of the Pure Moods selections but still it does have some good music on the discs. The music is pretty well done and it is great to just sit back and relax to. I don't think it is cheaply made and the sound is very good and clean. I recommend it if you like this New Age type of music. Well worth the price as far as I am concerned. Four discs of music (37 pieces) and a DVD with 55 minutes of music with a slide show on top of it. Enjoy yourself.

This album is NOT part of the Pure Moods series. Most of the songs are cheaply done or imitations.

    Do NOT buy.

    2nd time.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, seductive and relaxing.......2004-02-09

OMG it couldn't be better. The music is relaxing and seductive at the same time. It is the type of music you can play during a perfect romantic dinner, or the one that you can play while you are working and not get distracted. The guitars are just awesome.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Ottmar's greatest triumph!.......2002-06-07

I happen to be quite a Liebert aficianado and I think that this album represents the hands-down best work he has ever done in his career. The haunting beauty of his Spanish guitar is here tempered with a charming lightheartedness that was no doubt inspired by the East-Indian locale. Works such as Neon-Ghost Sensei provide just the right touch of the experimental Ottmar that we experience in Opium. Alternately fiery and mellow, but always beautiful, Ottmar's composition and playing here display their strongest synergy. I HIGHLY recommend it, if you buy just one instrumental album in your life, you're reading its review.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and engaging.......2000-12-08

I am a devoted Ottmar Liebert fan, and have purchased all of his disks. While I savor most, this (I believe his first) remains my favorite.

It is elegant, and rivetting: Soft, sensual, Latin American inspired acoustical guitar. While it might seem the perfect background music for relaxing with a book and a glass of wine, you will find yourself putting down the book and closing your eyes in order to devote your full concentration to appreciating this work.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it............2000-10-02

I bought this CD based on the strength of the reviews written here, not fully knowing what to expect. Despite the fact that I am a fan and own a copy of Borrasca, a wonderful CD in its own right, I wasn't sure how I would feel about this particular collection. After listening to it only once, I was completely swept away. Unlike the more vibrant and catchy tunes of Borrasca, The Hours Between Day + Night is more mellow, smooth and laced with a very lovely jazz feel that blends seamlessly into a unique sound. With 19 songs, one of which is a Spanish language remake of Marvin Gaye's Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology), it is not only one of the longest CDs this listener has come across, but it's well worth the price. Do yourself a favor and add this to your collection. It's well worth it.
