This Alcatraz-themed potboiler was the final film initiated by the vaunted masters of the action McMovie, producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer; the flamboyant Simpson died of a drug overdose soon after its release. Modern synth-orchestra fusion master Hans Zimmer is unaccountably teamed with Nick Glennie-Smith and Harry Gregson-Williams here, and the results are, well, just McFine. Not surprisingly, Zimmer's done better work on better films. --Jerry McCulley

This soundtrack to City of Angels has a mighty tall order to fill. The film is a remake of Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire, and the German director is known for his effective use of music. But where Wenders can call on his friends such as R.E.M. and Elvis Costello to contribute songs, City of Angels feels more like a marketing device. No less than half the selections are by Warner Bros. artists, including some new music by Alanis Morissette, her first since Jagged Little Pill. That song, "Uninvited," is the album's highlight, a restrained modal ballad in the mode of Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The rest alternates between other female stars such as Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan and bluesy selections from Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Eric Clapton. --Steven Mirkin

Items were shipped within two days, and I loved the music from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars An average soundtrack resting on the shoulders of one masterpiece..........2006-04-27

Now don't be so quick to hate based on my title here...I do love this soundtrack, but what I mean is that you have one BRILLIANT track and then an album of good tracks...I think the major problem was placing this BRILLIANT track in second place, for placing it on the outset of the album only sets you up for dissapointment. Yes, this track is 'Uninvited' by Alanis Morissette, which is haunting, bewitching and mezmerizing to say the least. Alanis, a wonderfully talented singer at that, puts together her finest piece of music ever and manages to real you in from the first word to the last, and that musical arangment, I mean come on...it's beautiful, eerie and enchanting all at the same time, and when it all breaks down towards the end after she utters the word "slide" and the violins get violent almost it's just one of my favorite pieces of music let alone the vocal masterclass that it is. So there you have it, the biggest reason to purchase this album...and it's a great reason, but the fact that it's the only reason stands to reitterate my opening comment. I mean, there are other good or even great songs like 'Iris' which was radio ready almost as soon as it was recorded, and the song itself is a beautiful and inspired song, one of the Goo Goo Dolls best efforts, and Sarah McLachlan, who possesses one of the most angelic voices ever, delivers a solid track 'Angel' and even Paula Cole delivers with 'Feelin Love' and The Jimi Hendrix instrumental 'Red House' but none of these tracks even come close to touching the power in 'Uninvited'. Some of the songs are good but nothing spectacular, much like the opener 'If God Will Send His Angels' by the glorious U2 and I guess maybe I expect too much but this song just left me saying "Is this for real?" It could have, no let me rephrase that, SHOULD have been much better. Eric Clapton, a genious that he is, delivers one of the most annoying tracks here, I think mainly because it drags on for over 7 minutes! And then there are tracks that hurt to listen to, like Peter Gabriel's 'I Grieve' which is ear-splitting terrible. At least Gabriel Yared's score is just beautiful. So, the album is not a complete let down, but it just had huge shoes to fill beings that one of the greatest songs of all time had graced the track listing...Now they could have followed in Titanics footsteps and released a score only with Alanis adding her masterpiece, and then maybe this would have been a 5 star rating, but the weight of the remaining tracks brought Alanis's beauty down just enough. (By the way, I'm still pretty P.O.'ed that 'Uninvited' did not take home the oscar for best original song...it deserved it hands down!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent all around.......2006-03-17

I bought this soundtrack after I saw the movie back in 98. I fell in love with every song on it and played it often. When I was stressed out, I would play one of Gabriel Yared's and let the stress drain out of my fingers. About a year ago, I had many of my favorite cd's stolen from the car and this was one of them. It killed me not to have it. I'm buying it again because I truely miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Selection .......2006-03-11

Contains an eclectic selection ranging from blues to anthems. Very pleasant listening for most music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2005-10-31

this CD is one of my top 5 favorite CDs. as far as soundtracks go - this one and one other are my favs. (the other? you want to know? it's Boys on the Side) it's not that I even like the movie - cause I don't. just that the soundtrack is soooooooo good!

my dear husband, Norman, and I have had great sex to this CD more times than I can count. and I fall asleep to it several times a month. I keep it next to my bed.

the songs -

If God Will Send His Angels - very soft, sweet, sultry, kind.
Uninvited - Alanis Morissette, haunting, sultry, memorable.
Mama, You Got A Daughter - love it! I want a whole CD with just this guy! John Lee Hooker - New Orleans kinda blues - so good. Angel - sweet, Sarah McLachlan. yummy good.
Iris - beyond beautiful. Goo Goo Dolls.

the rest, all good. Jimmi, U2, what a cast! as a compilation - it is very very good.

buy it from a nice seller on Amazon, I did!

We knew Thomas Newman was versatile (he's created gripping soundtracks for everything from The Shawshank Redemption to Desperately Seeking Susan), but his score for American Beauty is simply gorgeous and one of his best. Filled with inventive instrumentation--tablas, bird calls, dulcimer, banjo, ukulele, detuned mandolin, and more--the score varies between highly rhythmic, world-music influenced passages ("Dead Already," "Lunch with the King") and the more subdued ("Mr. Smarty-Man," "American Beauty"). Throughout, Newman's score is inventive and a great complement to the dark comedy's numerous mood swings. The movie's other soundtrack--a collection of memorable alt-rock tracks--gave us just a sampling of this score. Here's the rest. It's short (37 minutes) but sweet. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars It was just what my husband wanted.......2007-06-02

I purchased ths item for my husband because he loves the score of this movie. The CD arrived in adequate packaging, and the product was un-damaged and played perfectly. The haunting sounds of this CD are ideal for sleeping with. Sounds crazy and some of the tracks are sporadic and not good for restful sleep, but with modern technology you can pick the tracks you want to listen to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Film scores rarely stand on their own; Thomas Newman has written one that can........2007-04-14

I enjoyed reading D. Mok's review, but I am compelled to disagree about the invisibility of the score due to intricacy with the action, mood, and so on of the film. The first time I watched American Beauty I noticed the score. It's so gentle, patient, and gorgeous - I don't know how anyone can miss it.

When I go to watch this movie again - and I have more than once - I am always waiting for the music to move me into the world of the characters. I cannot imagine the film beginning with a better tune than "Dead Already." I cannot imagine the plastic bag dancing without its music. I cannot imagine Lester ogling Angela without his music (and her dancing). And that is one of the secrets of great art - if one's work is so complete that the audience is incapable of imagining a better brush stroke or better placement of music, the artist is viewed as great and an authority.

To pretend that I don't notice the greatness of Thomas Newman's score every time I watch the movie is not only dishonest, but an insult to Newman. I don't think D. Mok intended dishonesty or insult. I believe that the score stands on its own, although in a different way than it stands with the movie. With the movie, it flows easily and naturally. Without the movie, pieces of the film and strong emotions filter into your mind; it's a different experience, indeed, and it's one I recommend to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars ?.......2006-12-31

I can't find a song, which is playing when the two cheerleader-girls are danceing infront of they parents and Lester got crush on Angela at the first time?

5 out of 5 stars Newman's acclaimed score is worth all the praise it recieved.......2005-11-24

American Beauty - a great movie with an equally great score. Directed by Sam Mendes, who went on to equally great heights with "Road to Perdition", it is mainly a comedy-drama, though begins to focus more on drama later on. Newman's score perfectly suits the surroundings. It was largely an experimental score, compared to the style of his previous works before this film. However, he delivered quite well and the soundtrack added immensely to the film. This is probably what influenced Sam Mendes to use music so respectfully in "Road to Perdition" - who knows what he would have done had he hired another composer for American Beauty, and recieved a score of lesser brilliance.

American Beauty is characterized by three main motifs. First is the excited vibes and marimbas, second is the gentle piano wanderings, and third is the bearing string pads. The vibe sound is used often throughout the score. It is used to full effect to open the score, then continues to create a dreamlike trance in "Arose" and an upbeat atmosphere in "Lunch with the King". "Bloodless Freak" is repetitive - and that is most likely intentional, to represent the repitition of the character's actions on screen. The first piano theme is introduced in "Mental Boy", admist weird noises which leave abruptly to let it sink in.

If there is one thing that is remarkable about this score, it's that Newman uses themes to denote atmosphere and idea, rather than something blunt, like to denote a character. For instance, the theme in "Mental Boy" is first used to describe the character Ricky filming the family from their window. Later, it is used when Lester is nearing his fantasy about his daughter's best friend. The connection between the two isn't obvious, but it is present, as something, to put it bluntly "weird". Slightly surreal, "wrong" in many ways, dark. In a more positive tone, the theme from "American Beauty", rather than representing a scene or character, it represents beauty itself, and is played at two moments where we catch glimpses of beauty as explained through the characters.

The downside to this score is that some may find it gets repetitive on a constant listen. Many of the motifs are repeated almost exactly as they were previously, and not developed much as one would expect in other scores. For instance, the theme from "American Beauty" repeats in "Any Other Name" in an almost identical way, although with slightly varying string patterns and an extra piano motif near the end. Similarly, "Dead Already" and "Still Dead" do not differ greatly in their presentation.

Thomas Newman has established himself as a diverse and original composer with a unique tone in his music. What astounds me is that he is great with minimalistic instrumentation and odd sounds, but can also strike a chord easily when it comes to emotional, heartfelt music. If you liked American Beauty, I reccomend you check out "Road to Perdition" for more Tom Newman magic.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-10-19

The American Beauty Score is larger than life. Thomas Newman's masterpiece simply kills me with the heart earning everlasting impact of the sound on this score. The Plastic Bag Theme is something that makes my brain wave a million invisible white flags to it's tremendous simple melody. As corny as I might sound, I celebrate most of life's ironic moments by playing this very melody either on my PC or on my mind. American Beauty is my favourite film of all time and it wouldnt have been possible if this magical score was to be left out. The coordination with the story line and the melody is super and quite award winning. This was probably the first score I truly noticed besides Road To Perdition (Another outstanding composition) If you like this try out "The Village" by James Newton Howard. However if you want something better, keep looking. The music contained is creative and refreshes one's own existance like a blood purification process. I think I have said enough so let's just play "dead already" and enjoy our charades. [ Pardon my overdramatic self]

5 out of 5 stars Music & Movie on equal par - brilliant.......2007-05-18

I first heard music from this fine movie, while looking at a memorial sight on the web.

The music was the beautiful "Killer Angels" and after buying the movie? Wow! Where can I get the full CD?

The opening is simply brilliant, a piece of music that has a lot of feeling. "Men of Honour" is a real theme of the film. When it comes to brilliance, "Fife and Gun" has a sound of its own {the charge of the black hats}. There is excitement in "Over The Fence","Battle Of Little Round Top" and "The First Battle".

Then there is the quiet and meaningful side of Randy Edelman with, "General Lee at Twilight","Dawn",the beautiful "From History to Legend",and of course my favourite "Killer Angels",one of the prettiest instrumentals ever.

This is simply a wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful .......2006-12-20

This is a beautiful score, haunting and evocative. If you enjoyed the movie, you should absolutely buy the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-11-19

This soundtrack is one of my favorite CD's of all time. The music is captivating, sad, and haunting. If you have read "Killer Angels" or the this movie based off that book it gives the music a whole new life. It transports you into a time when the rules of war were different, much more gentile and honor based. However, the score is hauntingly beautiful even for non-Civil War enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Music! Some of the best I've ever heard!.......2006-07-13

The movie is awesome, but the cd is equally amazing. Awe-inspiring, from quiet, peaceful music to the full orchestra in the finale at the end, this is one of the best soundtracks ever written! A great gift to yourself or friends.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Genius!.......2007-03-08

Great soundtrack! My concert band back in high school played an arrangement that totally rocked but I loved the music since the release of the movie. It is sad that Michael Kamen died at such a young age. I really thought he would be the next John Williams. His music will last generations. He was a true Genius!

5 out of 5 stars A STIRRING, EPIC SCORE!.......2006-05-07

"Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" is a genuine thrill-ride of a movie, with outstanding action set-pieces and fine performances. One of the highlights of the film is Michael Kamen's stirring score. The music fits the film perfectly, and also works well on CD. There are moments of excitement, tenderness, and epic sweep.
Kamen was a one of the masters of film scoring. And while he is gone, it is great to be able to go back and listen to the great music he has left behind. His score for "Robin Hood" is one of his greatest works.
The two original songs on the CD are also good. Bryan Adams' "Everything I Do, I Do it for You" is a beautiful mix of Kamen's score and Adams' meaningful lyrics. Former ELO member Jeff Lynne also adds his talent to the mix with "Wild Times."
This is a great soundtrack that belongs in everyone's collection of great film CD's.

when my children were small, this was the only music i could play in the car that kept them quiet. if they started fussing, i would put in the tape in my car, and no lie, within 1 min. they would be listening happily. i don't know how i would have stayed sain without it.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe..........2004-12-07

the negative reviews for this score. It's one of the best I've ever heard, and the main theme sends chills up and down my spine. Many people must agree or else ESPN wouldn't repeatedly use the song for dramatic effect. Maybe the songs are "derivative" but I really don't care, it's great music to my ears and to the ears of many others.

4 out of 5 stars Overall Good Soundtrack.......2004-11-19

I believe this to be be one of Michael Kamen's better scores. It has a few faults, but overall is a very good score. I believe the best song to be Track 6.

The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall," "You Do," "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous (though they cut down the degrees of separation between them and Mann to an incredible one!). However, for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic songwriting, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mann....Oh Mann..........2007-04-25

This review refers to the soundtrack of "Magnolia"(CD)
see below for link to the film score

"Magnolia" was a one of a kind film. Not only for it's amazing cast, unique story and great filming, but the soundtrack is one that will touch you to your very core. Aimee Mann's words and music are stirring, and tell a story of life that is so relateable, that P.T. Anderson wrote the screenplay based on her works, all the different character stories that converge stemming from the character of Claudia. Don't worry though, if you are fan of Mann, but have not seen this film, this is an album that stands on it's own. One that you will never seem to get enough of.

The CD has 13 tracks from the film, every one a winner. Most are written and performed(9 of the tracks) by Mann, and even the opening with "One" not written by Mann, she makes it her own with a fresh take and the mood is set. "Momentum", "Build That Wall" "Deathly", "Driving Sideways", and 'You Do" follow and the words and music have such feeling you cannot helped be touched by the story they tell. One of human emotions that you will either relate to or be touched by. "Nothing is Good Enough" is a fine instrumental, that needs no words. Mann's final two selections are 'Wise Up" and "Save Me". Supertramp adds their wonderful talents with "Goodbye Stranger", 'Logical Song" both excellent tunes that I find nice for drive time, as well as "Dreams" from Gabrielle" . The album closes with "Magnolia" from John Brion's superb score.

The CD sound is excellent. It comes with a booklet with some notes from P.T. Anderson, the songs and the words, and some film pix. Fans of the film can relive all the very human moments again and again, and if you weren't a fan of Aimee Mann before you will be now. Fans of Mann, will enjoy this album that is definitive of her muisc, her style and intuitiveness for saying what we may be feeling.

If you are looking for just the score(also marvelous on it's own), that is also available atMagnolia (Score to 1999 Film) (Score to 1999 Film). There are some excellent reviews there of the album. This soundtrack is also available here:Magnolia
so you can check both of these sites for best deals and availability.

I've written close to 1,000 reviews here and I don't think I've ever said this before..If I could go more then 5 stars I would, but it's true of this album.

I'll leave this with some words by Mann's "Save Me":

"You look like - A perfect fit -
For a girl in need - Of a tourniquet -
But can you save me -Come on and save me
if you could save me - from the ranks- Of the freaks
who suspect - they could never love anyone...."

Enjoy....Laurie

Aimmee Mann is an absolutely talented artist, and her contributions to Magnolia are of nothing less than what is to be expected of her. Each of her songs has its own taste, its own feel, and its own uniqueness to it. She definately doesn't try to overdo any of her songs on the popularity factor.
Don't get me wrong, the rest of the soundtrack is fantastic too. Hell, "Dreams" is now my top inspirational song of all time, yes, past the Rocky song "Eye of the Tiger."
If you're a fan of Aimee Mann, you have to have this album. If you liked the movie, you have to have this album. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the GREATEST soundtracks ever in history!!.......2006-03-07

"SAVE ME", was the oscar nominated song off this soundtrack.
it lost, unfortunately, to a forgettable cartoon monkey love song by phil collins from disney.
"Magnolia" told the story of 9 lives intertwined in one night.
very depressing, raw, and devistatingly real.
3 other songs you can find also from aimee mann's, "bachelor no.2" cd. an excellent piece of masterful writing as well as lyrical depth and sharpness. you won't find a better cd than this for a film. aimee tells it like it is.....and then some!

3 out of 5 stars no harrry.......2005-07-12

i dont like harry nilson because i dont like what he did with that badfinger tune either so i dont care about "one"

all the amiee songs though are pretty cool

5 out of 5 stars As Much A 70's Soundtrack As A Film Soundtrack.......2006-03-07

The use of the phrase "Music from the Motion Picture" gives this the feel of a soundtrack, but what it really amounts to is a 70's mix CD, and a darn good one. In addition to "Hello It's Me," one of Todd Rundgren's biggest hits, the CD also includes the rarely-collected ballad "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan, the full-length version of "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc (not the edited mix that seems to be on every other 70's collection), and also the version of "Crazy On You" by Heart WITH the acoustic guitar intro. This CD also introduced me to Sloan ("Everything You've Done Wrong"), who sound right at home with a bunch of 70's hits but are actually a modern group. Also included are the two best 'soundtrack' pieces that Air recorded for the movie; "Ce Matin La" (which will sound familiar from the scene where Cecilia ghost-reads her diary) and "Playground Love," the recurring musical motif of the film. Great stuff to pop into the CD player while driving or working on the computer.

This soundtrack includes great songs, such as Power of Love and a terrific remake of Earth Angel. I definately recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars "Time Bomb Town" worth the money!!.......2007-05-10

My older brother had this tape back when it came out. We really loved all the movies as well as the songs in them. I have heard the Huey Lewis songs and the theme songs a million times, but I forgot all about the "buried treasure". I remember hearing "time bomb town" very briefly in the scene where marty's alarm goes off. I always thought it sounded like a weird song and never payed attention to it. Fast forward to 2007. I came across this soundtrack and "Time Bomb Town" blew me away. You may know Lindsey Buckingham as the guy in Fleetwood Mac, but he has some great solo stuff including "Holiday Road" from "National Lampoon's Vacation" Soundtrack from 1980 (another classic!) Anyway, I have been listning to "Time Bomb Town" non-stop for the last week, it is my favorite song at the moment and one of his best(including Fleetwood-Mac). It sounds very fresh, for being over 20 years old, and in my opinion is the best song on this soundtrack. CHECK IT OUT!

3 out of 5 stars Good but a little dissapointing.......2007-03-28

As a hugh fan of the "Back to the future" movies, I was very excited to receive this soundtrack. Unfortunatly, this soundtrack suffer from a lack of very important songs, that are very much remembered and loved.
Songs like "Mr. Sandman", that symbols the enter of Marty Mcfly to the 50's. I love this song and he is one of the reasons I bought this CD.
Also, other versions of the main theme of the movie, that appears on the movie, are missing from CD. this is most unfortunate...

3 out of 5 stars Where is the famous guitar solo?.......2007-03-08

I was mainly buying this CD because of Marty's famous guitar solo in the song Johnny B. Goode. Unfortunately, there is shorter version of that song on the CD not with the guitar solo. Other songs are OK.

5 out of 5 stars Good Time Oldies.......2006-02-24

Excellent product with classic hits from the movie that you love to sing and dance too. Product was sent in good time and i love it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2006-12-23

This is a fantastic soundtrack. It is both full of energy and emotion. I am not sure how much was composed by Hans Zimmer but it definitely has his sound behind it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Moving Action Score from Hans Zimmer.......2006-11-18

THE ROCK is a powerhouse of film scoring. I played it several times before I started to recognize the cues used in the film. I do not know how much is Zimmer's but the quieter and reflective parts of the score sound definitely like his style and I truly love them. He had this same effect in GLADIATOR, very moving.

2 out of 5 stars for zimmer not good at all.......2006-04-26

a Zimmer fan?: buy Last Samurai, King Arthur, Tears of the Sun, Gladiator, Thin Red Line, and Beyond Rangoon first. They are all much better than this one. Zimmer seems to be at his best when he goes global (Africa or Asia). His heavy synth stuff (like The Rock and Crimson Tide) isn't nearly as good. Instead of buying this I wish I has bought a new Last Samurai to replace my badly scratched copy.

5 out of 5 stars what is the name of that song? -- not in the soundtrack..........2005-07-10

In the film, when Mason is staying at Fairmont hotel in San Francisco and singing the song "...summertime in san francisco/.../flowers in her hair" or something like that... Who does that song? Anyone know?? I've been looking for it for a while...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack from an Awesome Movie.......2005-06-11

In my opinion, Hans Zimmer is a versatile composer who can conjure up incredible music for many different types of films. He demonstrates his talent in the action movie "The Rock". I was very impressed with the soundtrack of the movie and constantly listen to it over and over again. It's one of those soundtracks in which you'll never get bored of. The whole CD runs approximately 1 hour and 20 seconds and has 8 tracks.

Hummel Gets the Rockets (6:26): This is probably my favorite track on the whole CD. It starts off with soft strings and builds into a crescendo during the beginning credits of the movie, as radio dispatches of Hummel's doomed men are played back. The music dies down and reaches a sad tone as Hummel goes to tell his wife that he is about to do something that he couldn't do while she was alive. The music takes an upward turn with a loud introduction with brass and heavy percussion as Hummel's men breach the U.S weapons depot. This is my favorite part of the song and it has a driving beat with The Rock's theme tune.

Rock House Jail (10:13): The beginning explodes with loud percussion and brass and dives into the movie's theme tune. This lasts for about 2 minutes and then subsides into a roller coaster of volume and tune that rise and fall in an incredibly fluent way. In the movie, this music is played when Hummel's men seize Alcatraz and set up their HQ. It is also when Goodspeed and Mason get onto the island fortress with the Navy SEALS.

Jade (1:58): This song takes an unusual turn and composes mainly of the beautiful sounds of a flute. This is played while Mason greets his daughter at the Apollo memorial and spends a few quiet moments with her.

In the Tunnels (8:40): This track starts off with strong percussion and brass. The Rock theme plays through for about a minute and then switches to the strings. A crescendo comes up as the SEALs enter the washroom and are ambushed by Hummel's men. The track skips over to when Mason and Goodspeed are firebombed and plays fast strings that rise and then quickly subside. The track then moves over when Sergeant Hendricks and several men go into the tunnel system to hunt down Mason and Goodspeed. Again, fast strings are played along with a nice touch of the electric guitar.

Mason's Walk - First Launch (9:33): This track follows are more calm approach with the strings. It starts off when Mason surrenders to Hummel's men to try to prevent the hostage from being executed. He buys Goodspeed time to try and neutralize the remaining rockets. The track then goes into the part when Hummel orders the first VX rocket to be launched. A nice blend of fast-paced percussion and strings paint the atmosphere of death hanging over the city and being diverted by Hummel who is not ready to kill thousands of people.

Rocket Away (14:12): This is the longest track on the CD and varies greatly in tune and volume. It starts off quiet and builds into the strings accompanied by a trumpet solo. At about 6 minutes into the song, The Rock theme enters and sounds really cool. In the movie, Mason is picking off Hummel's deranged men one by one and tries to give Goodspeed time, who is stuck atop the lighthouse. The track moves onto when Captain Fry and Goodspeed are trying to kill each other in a desperate struggle. The music slows down and gives a sense of terrific suspense as Goodspeed rises to his feet and attempts to light his flares to stop the F-18s from plastering the islands with incendiary bombs. The track moves later into a beautiful section with the flute, similar to "Jade", as Mason pulls Goodspeed out of the water.

Fort Walton Kansas (1:37): Being the shortest track on the CD, this song is very unusual. It has that Midwest feel with the strings but has a flat sound to it. In the movie, Goodspeed and his wife drive away with Mason's microfilm.

The Chase (7:36): I can't understand why this track was put at the end. In the movie, this music is played when Mason steals a Humvee and wrecks San Fran. Fast strings and brass keep the feeling of a thrilling car chase through the urban areas of the city. The ending builds into a rising crescendo that abruptly ends the song.

In all, this is a soundtrack that is not to be missed or overlooked. I absolutely love it and am glad that I bought it. To me, this CD was well worth my money and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed. If you like this CD, I recommend Pirates of the Caribbean and Gladiator. I hope this review helped!

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Richard, a young traveler with a curiosity streak that leads him to Thailand in search of adventure. This video-game fanatic finds himself following a map that supposedly leads to an island paradise. The accompanying soundtrack mixes the technological fascination with the exotic journey of the jungle, featuring several ambient electronica tracks (Underworld's epic "Ball," Leftfield's "Snakeblood") and other tracks mixed for futuristic sound. New Order provide the previously unreleased "Brutal," representing the sharper end of their spectrum, with a heavier guitar mix than usual. Asian Dub Foundation provide a modern interpretation of dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry's "Return of Django." Sugar Ray expand their range with the calypso groove of Brian Eno and John Cale's "Spinning Away," and it's an unexpected gem. Bratty Britpoppers Blur remix "On Your Own" to sound like a video game gone beserk. Film scorer Angelo Badalamenti brings things full circle with the surprisingly upbeat collaboration with Orbital for the closing track "Beached." --Rob O'Connor

Album Description

The Beach Motion Picture Soundtrack includes New Order's "Brutal," the first new song available from this Brit troupe in a long time. The soundtrack also features a new track from multi-platinum English artists All Saints. The song, "Pure Shores," was produced by William Orbit (Madonna) and will be found on the band's forthcoming album. The soundtrack is rounded out by brand new songs/mixes from Sugar Ray, Blur & Faithless.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Perfect album to travel with.......2006-01-24

A really good mix of various electronic music. I was surprised that "Spinning Away" was a track from Sugar Ray. It is quite a good track with a very island feel to it. While I thought the movie could have been better, this soundtrack is one of the best I have heard.

5 out of 5 stars Bombastic Best Beach Broadcast.......2005-09-30

The sountrack really matches every scenes in the movie. The sequencing and timing of the music with the scenes are uncanny. I used this sountrack as background for any occassion and it was just too perfect and listeners love it.

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant slice of electronica.......2005-04-27

Let me start by saying I have never seen "The Beach". When it came out, it did not seem like the type of movie I would be intersted in seeing. Because I had never seen the movie, I had no impulse to listen to the soundtrack either. However, I recently borrowed the soundtrack CD from a friend, and was pleasantly surprised.

I love techno and electronica music. I have been a fan of this type of music going back to it's new-wave/techno roots of the early 80's. This CD offers a wide sampling of electronica, including some of the usual suspects/pioneers of the genre such as Moby, New Order, and Orbital. The CD also gives some artists not known for this type of music a "techno" vibe. All Saints, who were pretty much a Spice Girls clone of the late 90's, are given the electronica treatment on a tune called "Pure Shores". I actually like this song better than some of the material they recorded on their own. Perhaps they might have stayed popular a little longer if they had moved more in this direction than in the Spice Girl direction. Another group given a new spin is Sugar Ray. I had to check the track listing twice, because Mark McGrath sounds almost completely different on "Spinning Mary".

This CD is ambient enough to put on your computer and play in the background while you work and/or study. It is certainly not a masterpiece, but worth a spin.

4 out of 5 stars For the most part, a good soundtrack.......2005-01-02

All in all, I think this soundtrack captures the feel of the movie well. "Pure Shores" by All Saints is definitely the most "poppy" song but it works nicely with the whole tropical atmosphere of the movie. I found myself liking songs which I didn't think I would, for example, Sugar Ray's take on "Spinning Away." Only a few songs didn't grab my attention, or maybe they just work better when listened to while watching the movie, and don't make the same impact when heard by themselves. One song that would have been *perfect* for this movie (although admittedly out of place) is Toad The Wet Sprocket's "Walk On The Ocean." In any event, this is a fun soundtrack to play while driving or simply sitting alone. And you don't even have to like the movie to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!.......2004-12-13

This is one of those albums that grows on you over time. It is best listened to while hiking, traveling across the country (or the world), relaxing on a beach, or flying to some exotic land. The music, primarily ambient and soothing electronica ("trip hop"), sets a perfect mood for anyone's journey into paradise. The weakest song on here is probably the track by All Saints (which was subsequently the big promoted single from the movie). It just sounds too much like bubblegum pop and doesn't sit well next to the likes of Moby, Sugar Ray, or Blur. Some of the songs are slow and pulsing, while others are fast and heavy. The soundtrack itself is arguably better than the film. It's "beach music" at its best (no pun intended).
