In telling the story of two friends from a tough Rio de Janeiro barrio whose lives can never seem to escape the favela where they were born and raised, the acclaimed film by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund has drawn comparisons to such modern touchstones as Martin Scorsese's GoodFellas. Taking his inspiration from the filmmakers' daring gambit to cast real people in the roles and the film's '60s-'70s milieu, composer Antonio Pinto (assisted by partner Ed Córtes) has concocted a smart, rhythmically intoxicating cocktail of Brazilian jazz and samba, shaken with a little '70s American funk and R&B and served with cool, tropical flair. Those various styles often melt into each other with a liberating sense of postmodern possibility, giving listeners an experience that's as exotic as it is deceptively familiar, the worthy equatorial flip side of David Holmes's jazz-funk collaborations with Steven Soderbergh on Out of Sight and Ocean's Eleven. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Tropicalismo Samba soul circa 1970's.......2007-01-12

A great soundtrack to a superb, first-rate film. "City of God Soundtrack" is infused with so much soul, you'll be moving...and grooving! Okay, I had to say "grooving" because what else can you expect from the 70's?

This movie was absolutely perfect in its delivery, and the beats and sounds that this soundtrack carries makes everything come alive. I mean you really feel the atmosphere. Its very '70's and very cool. The best cuts are "Metamorfose Ambulante" (stellar and sexy) and "Do Caminho Do Bem" (my brother who thinks listening to a language you don't understand is silly, thought this track was "real tight") and the reason I bought the album, "Convite Para Vida" is a traditional samba. Play this music when you're lounging, in the car or at a barbecue. Believe the hype with this movie and go buy it, along with a great soundtrack that will remain a classic.

Also recommended: Cibelle's "Cibelle", Sergio Mendes' "Timeless", Lura "Di Korpu Ku Alma."

4 out of 5 stars Decent........2006-08-27

I like it, but I wish there were more Brazilian songs like tracks 11 and 12. That's the only reason I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5. This and the movie itself fascinated me enough to make me want to visit Brazil and learn Portuguese even more.

5 out of 5 stars Cidade de Deus.......2006-07-25

Oi!
After watching "City of God" I wanted to see and hear more of Brasil. It wasn't what I expected it was BETTER. I've never listened to something and closed my eyes and honestly felt like I was there.

Album Description

Passionate remixes of the music featured in the critically acclaimed film CITY OF GOD from the very best Brazilian electronic artists and DJs.

"City of God" is the story of the slum gangs of Rio de Janeiro. Breathtaking and terrifying, urgently involved with its characters, it announces a new director of great gifts and passions: Fernando Meirelles. The film has been compared with Scorsese's "GoodFellas," and it deserves the comparison.

The movie takes place in slums constructed by Rio to isolate the poor people from the city center. They have grown into places teeming with life, color, music and excitement--and also with danger, for the law is absent and violent gangs rule the streets.

"City of God" does not exploit or condescend, does not pump up its stories for contrived effect, does not contain silly and reassuring romantic sidebars, but simply looks, with a passionately knowing eye, at what it knows. - Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun Times

1 out of 5 stars POO ON REMIX SOUND TRACT.......2006-12-01

This sound tract remix was a boring redundent waste of my time. I should of read other reviews before I purchased it. It's a total waste of $$$.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid the REMIX version.......2005-05-20

I saw the movie and was going to get the original soundtrack, which sounded great on the DVD. Other reviews indicated that the remix version was much superior, so I bought that version. What a mistake! The remix uses a bunch of dime-store, tinny-sounding effects that just ruin the sound in my opinion. In disgust, I gave up listening after hearing about 6 cuts. Unless you're into a heavily disco-ized sound and special effects, I'd avoid the remix version like the plague.

3 out of 5 stars expecting something different.......2004-07-30

i bought this cd hoping to hear some brazilian funky fighting music, but it's all electro-drum and bass type stuff. good music for chillin' out or makin' luv to tho.

5 out of 5 stars City Of God Remixed is divinely inspired!.......2004-02-24

This "remix" soundtrack to the groundbreaking City Of God movie and original soundtrack sets the bar for all that come after it! It is an incredible reworkign for the already classic songs from City Of God, remixed by the hottest Brazillian DJs in electronic music today!

A perfect compliment to the original soundtrack and don't forget to check out City Of God Remixed Volume 2!

5 out of 5 stars Great Film, Great Music, Great Mixes!!!.......2004-02-24

I love this movie and I'm so glad it's nominated for 4 academy awards! I got the soundtrack and loved it, but these remixes are soo cool that since I've got this album of remixes I listen to it much more than orignal sountrack. Especially good are the first and last tracks by Drum Magick, but the album is so solid and consistent that everything is great! For fans of both the film and Brazillian Electronica, this album is a must have!

The melody that gives the title to this cd, "On Broadway" is a masterpiece of arrangement: every instrument is on the very right key and it truly makes you live that very special feeling that you only get every once in a while with very special music. Listen to it, you will buy it instantly.

5 out of 5 stars Another Amazing City of God Project. Shake Your @#$ To This!.......2004-02-24

I am a big fan of both the regular City of God soundtrack and the first remix CD. This one is mellower in ways, which is a very nice balance. Especially great for dancing, working out or just having fun at home. This is a series of CDs where you must have all 3 CDs in your collecion but Electronica fans will want to focus on the 2 Remix projects if they must chose. So enjoy these and get the party started. Also see my review of Volume 1.

5 out of 5 stars More Brazillian Electrobliss!.......2004-02-24

I was groovin' my trobles away with this amazing soundtrack sequel to the heartbreaking film City Of God. This incredible CD agains combines infectious traditional Brazillian rhythms with top shelf Brazillian DJs to create a sonic soundscape that is as engaging and haunting at the movie itself.

City Of God Remixed Volume 2 is a perfect compliment to the first soundtrack, and anyone who has heard that will enjoy this one!
