Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

This is a brand new stereo recording of the soundtrack made in 2002 at Abbey Road Studios. The original soundtrack was recorded in mono in Los Angeles in 1951. I really don't see the point of this project. It seems like few audiophiles would even be interested in this type of music while listeners wanting the original vintage - mono - ambiance would feel cheated (like ME). Also, the "modernized" cover art SUCKS.

I just saw the Kronos Quartet play this score in concert with a live theremin! The themes are excellent thoughout the work,and the quiet parts are very nice indeed!

When I first saw the movie, on a Saturday afternoon "Creature Feature", with some family members, I bragged that the music was done John Williams ...because that same music was featured in "Lost in Space" over and over alot. Little did I realize, after looking at the credits, that it was Bernard Herrmann...in fact the 'recycled music' used in the LIS series was from this movie: ..DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL; and Bernard was never listed in the credits on the LIS TV show --not even as 'additional music by'--to avoid paying him any royalties; & that was WRONG. That just goes to show how GOOD the music is..a real treasure.

Bernard Herrmann, the famous coposer of so many classics of the cinema, has never written a boring film score, and in this science fiction classic,he sets the standard high again for great film music. This film is one of the classic science fiction movies of all time and this film score matches its subject with great force, music of the heavens and space and great music for Gort the robot. Highly recommended. This music fills you with awe and great harmonies. Herrmann was one of our greatest film composers and anything he wrote is worth listening to again and again.

and to think he cherished the 19th, with his fervent anglophilia.
almost all film music references his scores and even his ideals. Herrmann started out paling with Aaron Copeland and even Gershwin at times, but this symphonic minded iconoclast instead preferred the anti-establishment rebels, like radio conductor Johnny Green at CBS, meeting and working with Orson Welles, and joined both in a successful stint in Radio Drama and concerts that segued into motion pictures when Welles 'took him' to Hollywood to begin a career with what is considered still, THE greatest film ever, Citizen Kane. Top Music dog Al Newman (Randy's uncle) saw Herrmann through Hollywood, handed him off to Hitchcock and Harryhausen and eventually Truffaut, DePalma and Scorsese (where he went out 'literally', right after Taxi Driver. Herrmann wrote the DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL right after completing his 4 hour opera 'Wuthering Heights, not having worked in Hollywood for 4 years to complete it. Enjoy this 'return to Hollywood' score that Herrmann obviously enjoyed screening and composed a dramatic errie beauty!

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.

This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...

But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)

If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).

But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.

If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.

The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.

Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.

Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).

Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.

Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.

And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.

I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).

I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).

I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).

If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!

If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

Captured on this one disc are the great film scores Bernard Herrmann did for several classic science fiction films of the '50s and '60s. Herrmann did not go in for simple atmospherics and cheap orchestral tricks with his music. He knew that the music would have to conjure a mental world all its own. This is especially true in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". It's a tone poem Rimsky-Korsakov could have written. The best here is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with its use of the (then) revolutionary theremin. It's a clear masterpiece, all on its own. --Paul Cook

I like to think of this CD as being the "Forbidden Planet" of film scores CDs -- technically marvelous, consistently enthralling on an emotional and mental level, and way ahead of its time.

Unfortunately it is not available as I write this. Last time I visited this Amazon site, there was one CD for sale for almost $60. You'll have to make up your own mind if this music is worth that much to you. I made my choice long ago to own this and keep it in my library, conceivably forever.

With five film scores, 35 tracks and 72 minutes of the most high grade science fiction music, this CD should be considered the definitive source for Bernard Herrmann's non-Hitchcock film scores. Not only did he conduct the National Philharmonic Orchestra in these recordings, the composer approved of the Phase 4 recording and mixing. It is, as the notes say, a unique listening experience.

I have found this CD to be a constant source of imagination, vision and scope in film music that still has no peer 30 years after its production. The opening sequence to "Journey To The Center of the Earth" is better than it ever was in the theater, where the music was a hackneyed backdrop to an incredilbe film. In this CD, the music dwarfs the film action.

My favorite sequence in this issue is Herrmann's work for the Ray Bradbury novella "Fahrenheit 451", which was recast in some minds recently when "Fahrenheit 911" appeared in theaters throughout the country.

Every bit of the miracle of that little film is projected through this eerily wonderful music, which seems to comprise a world of its own. The sections help recall Sontag's first trip on the fire engine, the bedroom fire and the finale.

The lengthiest tract on this disk is the near 27 minute set from the film "Gulliver's Travels". I've never seen the movie but will attest that the music is out of this world in a very British way. This section seems closer to following the musical rules for a suite than any other on this disk.

Decca had the good sense to return the Bernard Herrmann-conducted Hitchcock scores to circulation, so maybe they will do the same with this miraculous disk. Again, the notes are nothing to write home about, but even with that considered no lover of film music or the music of Bernard Herrmann can consider their library complete without this disk.

Well, the breakneck tempos, nasty distortion and Sonics drum kickin' of the first couple of records are long gone, but this is seriously their best longplayer since the second album. The Epitaph albums seemed to get progressively better from the somewhat disappointing "Scared Straight"(boring production, inconsistent songwriting)but they somehow never offered the complete NBT experience of the first two records...this one will grow on you in a hurry. Kind of Stones-y, in all the best meanings of the word, with no pouting or lame yellow football breeches on the front man thank you very much. If you really miss the early stuff the odds and sods compilation "Switchblade Tongues..." gives you a nice piece of that action and it makes a fine companion piece to this record. It flows better than a lot of bands' albums for a singles and b-sides compilation too. What are you waiting for, goose the gas on your Camaro and pick up this plastic, as stated by other reviewers it takes these "new" garage bands straight to the woodshed.

In short - With this new album, the NBT's prove they can still rock out with as much spunk as they did in their earlier days. Reminiscent of their very first album, Destroy-Oh-Boy(also a must buy), the band regains their aggression from that first album that I felt was missed on later CD's. Translation = Very good songs. If you enjoyed their first album, you'll be veeeeeeery pleased whence you listen to this one. I know I love it.

It's hard to single out the songs individually, as like usual, the album flows great, but my favorites on the CD must be "Hassle St.", "Sick Sermon", and "Ditch".

Buy the album and enjoy.

It really is a sad day for rock'n'roll when a great band like the mighty New Bomb Turks have to take a back seat to nerds that wear matching red and white outfits and New York rich kids with big hair. The New Bomb Turks rocked and rolled harder than all of these new "garage" dorks and did it with a lot more style and class. The Turks actually wrote garage/rock'n'roll tunes that expanded on the genre instead of copying Iggy or the Stones. This is a great record -plain and simple. When you get sick of your Von Blondies-Whipe Stipes-blah-blah kiddie bands, go buy some New Bomb Turks rock action!

I would reckon-mend this to Little Poomba, but not Big Poomba, BP already listened and has no money.

But anyone else who likes the rock and The Rock, I would definitely reckon-mend this to you. They are better than the Strokes and the White Stripes.

I was in a indie record store the other day and seen the NBT's had a new cd and since long forgoten about them thanks to their first Epitaph release.I remember 'Destroy Oh Boy' was in constant rotation on my cd player around 93-94 and thought I would give the Turks' another chance.
Why this is better then 'Scared Straight' it is still no 'Destroy Oh Boy' but it did have some rocking tunes on it but nothing as frantic as 'DOB' and 'Information Highway..'.But hey I will take this over bland MTV rock like 'The White Stripes' any day

    Album Description

    KBN has all the hallmarks of a classic Tonedeaf release - who else would have the balls to release a CD single with the same song title - albeit two completely different versions - same songs?

    'TKoG' was a 2-minute mainstream pop song from a very popular 60's British pop group. The only characteristic from the original recording is sampled vocal lyric. KBN's new version comes complete with hard electronic sounds, while the remix is a demonic frenzy of electro-percussive sequences.

    On the radiomix of their second single 'The Natives', Flee's cuts through the track like a blade on ice. On 'Time Space Travel' you only feel like sinking deep into the dance floor thrashing menacingly into the hole. As their debut CD "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is an absolute delight.

    This CD has been around for a while now but it is still truly a good compilation of Science Fiction film music given a new dimension by being recorded digitally. The BATMAN selections composed by Danny Elfman are very powerful combing rousing elements with moody enigmatic passages. Most of the other selections are short or confined to one piece. The selections from TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER and POLTERGEIST all composed by Jerry Goldsmith are all performed with passion and demonstrate Goldsmith's great versatility. Bernard Herrmann's "Outer Space" from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is brief but in effect makes it all the more powerful by its great innovation and lasting impact. The WAR OF THE WORLDS "Prelude" by Leith Stevens was a great surprise.

    Maestro Kunzel has gathered together a mostly-entertaining mix of music from various s/f movies. As usual with these collections, the CD contains selections that are hard to come by (if not impossible) on a soundtrack or any other recorded source. Not all of the tracks work, however. Music from "Moonwalker" is annoying, and the theme from "War of the Worlds" is just plain weird. Not Kunzel's fault, I know, but those pieces tend to (for me) mar the overall likeability of the album. That said, there are definitely keepers: The theme from "The Black Hole," the soundtrack to which was unavailable on CD anywhere until just recently and which by itself is worth the cost; the sweet chorus of Carol Ann's Theme from "Poltergeist"; the themes from "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Beast Master" (I am Dar!) and "The Last Starfighter."

    Unfortunately, these movie collections tend to waste too much disk space on sound effects. Often inserted as short introductions to a piece of music, most can be endured quickly and forgotten. But on this CD, a whole track's worth following "The Black Hole" is devoted to the inane cacophony of electronic gibberish, space that would have been much better served by playing, say, the Love Theme from "Superman."

    Still, there are more things to like on this album than there are to dislike.

    3 out of 5 stars Digital Sound with a so-so collection.......2000-06-25

    This is another of the Telarc label's collections put together under the conductor Erich Kunzel and performed by the Cincinnati pops orchestra. Like all Telarc discs, the sound is pure digital and hence can really pack a punch. Moreover, Kunzel often chooses some vey nice gems in his collections -- e.g. the neglected Last Starfighter piece here. However, the problem arises in the fact that many pieces of film score don't play well with a large orchestra -- they loose their focused intensity. The Batman here suffers from such a flaw and is weaker than the original score. The Pops orchestra is best with march-type themes, of which there are not enough on this album to make it outshine the original soundtracks from which it draws.

    This is the movie that gave us the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto!" As befits the film that kicked off the Atomic Age's obsession with flying saucers and giant robots, Bernard Herrmann's score is the last word in 1950s sci-fi. Although many of its elements have become clichés over the years, the original has lost none of its power. Thanks to the many eerie, theremin-drenched passages, it's almost impossible to hear that instrument without thinking about guys in space suits. Other great moments: tinkling space pianos, ominous robot monster chords, and weird, plangent orchestrations. One of Herrmann's most visionary and influential scores. --Heidi MacDonald

    Although he had previously worked with Orson Wells and later became closely associated with Alfred Hitchcock, it was his score for the 1951 science-fiction film THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL that really put composer and conductor Bernard Herrmann on the Hollywood map.

    With THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, Hermann first creates an almost sub-sonic bedrock of slowly and smoothly rising brass suggestive of distance and then layers two more sounds above it. Rapid and sharply struck tones of various keyboards are evocative of both technology and speed--and the introduction of the theremin rising and falling above all dominates all with a tone that is, paradoxically, unearthly, uneasy, and yet somehow very smooth and unexpectedly calming.

    With this basic sound occasionally punctuated by menacing jolts to herald the dangerous power of the mammoth robot Gort, Herrmann wrings a host of changes that are never less than aural delight. But memorable as it, he discards it almost completely for what two of the film's finest moments: "Arlington," in which the characters contemplate the graves of the war dead, and "Lincoln Memorial," in which they consider the words of the great president of the United States. These are simple phrases of music, clean, and yet insistent in their call for us to see the loss, to head the warning.

    The 20th Century Fox CD release on Arista is very good indeed, the sound as clean as the day it was first recorded with Herrman (assisted by Lionel Newman and Alfred Newman) conducting. It is easy for a film score to add nothing to a film--it is equally easy, I think, for a film score to overpower a film. But it is a rare thing when the score not only works with the film but also stands alone as a thing of beauty in its own right. Few film composers have that gift, but Herrman was not only among them, he may well have been the most gifted of all. Strongly recommended.

    Greatly Missed and Not Forgotten

    The appeal of certain 1950s sci-fi movies stays with you strangely through the years, and you eventually come to realise it wasn't so much the movies that captivated you, but the soundtracks, which gave a profundity to the movies they didn't always deserve. Such is the case with Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack for the 1951 movie, "The Day the Earth Stood Still", where Herrmann created a new musical form that was so entire and perfect in one try that there was little left for anyone else to add, no matter how many bucks and computers they subsequently threw at it.

    In this soundtrack, extraordinary instruments are in constant dialogue with each other, like the two theremins - one high and one low - that call to each other like hyper-intelligent other-worldly cats, and the four pianos answering each other across the vastness of space. Herrman's instrumental sounds seem to evolve out of emptiness and then disappear back into it without trace, just like matter and life does in the universe. The internal heart of this music has never been approached, except maybe by the all-electronic "Forbidden Planet" soundtrack of Louis and Bebe Barron, although its external form has been repeatedly imitated in many sci-fi movies. The audio quality of this recording allows total immersion in the extraordinaty sounds that Bernard Herrmann created.

    ONLY KIDDING!!!... But as sci-fi goes this is the classics of all classics and to me the best sci-fi movie ever filmed.These early sci-fi movies had what the new sci-fi movies can only wish they have. A good story, good writing and simple special effects and acting that was real and convincing. The movies of today with it's multi-million dollar budgets, computer generated effects and Hollywood two-bit actors who always find that bra size equals their brains in solving the disruction of the earth at the last minute of the movie after a sex scene and showing some flesh. This movie is based on an excellent script and brilliant acting, beautiful camera work, and suttle effects that are alot more believable than anything of today.This is a gem of a movie and most certainly a collectors film. This movie has stood the test of time and will always be the best sci-fi movie ever written for the screen. And who knows, maybe someone really is watching us in real life trying to distroy this planet which makes this story alot more believable.

    I am in agreement with other reviewers that this is a great soundtrack. The music for "The Day the Earth Stood Still" shows Bernard Herrmann at his most innovative. The transfer is excellent and I thought the booklet notes were very good at explaining what Herrmann was after in writing this music. The stills from the movie were well chosen. My only gripe is that the music times to 36:02! This is by far the shortest CD I own. I am grateful that the price was discounted but there is far too little music to see it even at that price. It would have been a far greater CD if another sci-fi score were coupled with this one. I highly recommend this CD but buyers should be aware of the short playing time.
