If there's one thing film producers and record executives like more than Success, it's Success: Part 2. Thus when Ridley Scott's high-tech sword 'n' sandal epic scored both Golden Globe wins and Academy Award nods for Best Film and Best Score, it was a sure bet that another volume of Hans Zimmer's and Lisa Gerrard's music for the film couldn't be far behind. Though not exactly leftovers, the tracks here sometimes point to the fact that there wasn't enough fresh material to fill this volume out, hence we get some remixed cues, a handful of familiar music with dramatic dialog excerpts edited and superimposed (or misplaced, with decidedly mixed results), and even a beat-heavy, dance-club mix of "Now We Are Free." With a little over half an hour of entirely fresh material and some souvenir dialog snippets over the rest, there's enough here to please Gladiator die-hards. Also of note: guitarist Heitor Pereira's flamenco-flavored flourishes are better showcased throughout; and "The Gladiator Waltz" serves up one of Zimmer's original synth demos (with a dash of Russell Crowe dialog up front)--a dramatic amp-up of Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" that's a prime example of the composer's state-of-the-art digital orchestral conjuring. --Jerry McCulley

Is it forgivable that the second volume of songs from Adam Sandler's mid-'80s-revival comedy begins with Kajagoogoo's famously limp "Too Shy"? Not really, but the rest of the disc does a good job of recapitulating worthy memories from the era of torn-sweatshirt necks and mulletheads--not just with new-wave novelties but with Madonna and Hall & Oates staples ("Holiday" and "You Make My Dreams," respectively) as bouncy and glossy as anything the also-present Depeche Mode ("Just Can't Get Enough") and Dead or Alive ("You Spin Me Round [Like a Record]") ever put on the radio or MTV. The Cars' "It's All I Can Do" and the J. Geils Band's "Love Stinks" encapsulate the Sandler character's romantic frustrations, while the star's own "Grow Old with Me" actually points toward a serious career as a singer/songwriter for our boy. 5 out of 5 stars Tunes from the 80s.......2007-01-26

Loved the movie love the tunes. "Grow Old With You," especially tugs at your heart strings.

4 out of 5 stars Solid sountrack if you liked the movie.......2007-01-15

This movie was a favorite in our household and my daughters always enjoyed the karaoke a the end of the DVD, so we searched for the soundtrack. I actually chose this volume over volume 1 for two reasons...it contains the favorite from the movie, "I want to grow old with you" actually sung by Adam Sandler and secondly, because Volume 1 contains the song that Adam Sandler sings about his ex-girlfriend, which contains quite a bit of profanity, so I didn't want to get it for my kids. I would have given it five stars, but we find the introduction by Billy Idol at the start of the last track, "I want to grow old with you," which is dialog from the movie, to be distracting and it gets tiring to have to listen to over and over when you just want to hear the song, which I mentioned was the absolute favorite.

5 out of 5 stars As good as volume 1.......2007-01-11

This album took me back to "the good old Days". If you love 80's music this is a must have! The first volume was great but I was left wondering, "what happened to the rest of the music from the movie?" Volume 2 answered that question. You won't be sorry if you get this CD. Maybe it too will take you back to "the good old days".

5 out of 5 stars Finally found it!.......2006-02-25

Aahh...the uniqueness of 80s music. Been looking for the Flying Lizards "Money" song since then. It's been on several movie sound tracks however it never made it on the 'sound track CD' until now. "Leisure Rules"

5 out of 5 stars if you like the 80's.......2006-02-21

you will love this album. Truth be told I liked this one more than the first cd. The recordings are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-12-30

One of those pivotal soundtracks. Unfortunately, there is dialogue over a few of the tracks, but it is well worth sitting or fast-forwarding through. There is a duduk (the sound used for that thing Mr. Tumnus plays in 'Narnia'), and I have fallen in love with it. There is the use of a female voice (Lisa Gerrard) wailing in another language, which had become something of a trend ('Troy', 'Munich', 'Narnia' again, and many others). "Now We Are Free" is the kind of song that first intrigues you, then entraps you, and then takes you on an emotional ride. The soundtrack is intensely bittersweet, exciting ("The Gladiator Waltz"--yes, you're supposed to giggle--Hans did!), and just very consumable. If you were impressed by movie--and I haven't run into anybody yet who wasn't--then consider this soundtrack an equivalent of that experience, but audio.

5 out of 5 stars HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST PRESENT DAY COMPOSER!!!.......2005-10-23

I HAVE TO SAY HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST OF HIS ERA. I HAVE PURCHASED ALMOST ALL OF HIS MAJOR SCORES FROM RAIN MAN, CRIMSON TIDE, GLADIATOR, AND EVEN THE LATEST BATMAN AND I KNOW I HAVE PLENTY OF MORE THAT COULD BE LISTED. I FIRST WAS WEIRY ABOUT BUYING THE SECOND SCORE TO GLADIATOR THINKING IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE THE FIRST ONE. IT IS AWESOME AND JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER, IF YOU ARE A TRUE ZIMMER FAN YOU HAVE TO ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION. I HOPE HE KEEPS MAKING MUSIC FOR YEARS TO COME.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Extention!.......2005-10-22

Gladiator may be the best middle eastern score ever written. The Duduk was incredible!

The first CD was amazing as well, however, I believe this disc to have a few advantages.

First of all, "The Gladiator Waltz." This song TOTALLY improves upon "The Battle" from disc 1. The original stopped way before the new track. The synth sounds are very good, and don't take away from the beauty at all!

Another highlight is "Homecoming" this is a sad, angry song that will have your blood pumping. If you've seen the movie, you remember the scene where Maximus escapes execution, and rides home like a mad man, only to find his wife and son Crucified. A truly angry and intense song.

"Secrets" is a sneaky evil track, portraying the violent insanity of Commodus.

I have mentioned the highlights, but all the rest are great too! A must have CD, even if you own the first!

4 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2005-07-28

This is just what the title says: more great(beautiful) music from the motion picture, including some "spiced-up" remixes. This album also features sound clips from the movie. Listening to it will make you think you're in Rome again.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing companion to the Oscar nominated score........2005-05-28

The original score for Gladiator was a grand triumph for composer Hans Zimmer. Unfortunatly, this cd follows a trend during the latter half of the 1990's. When you have a successful score cd, follow it up with a cd full of dialogue, demo tracks and occassional new music. That is what this cd is full off. I expected more of the great music from the movie, instead I was disappointed bitterly.

5 out of 5 stars My First Time.......2007-04-01

I remember, back when my older brother got his first car and popped this cd in when I rode with him. I fell in love with this cd so much that I knew when the skips happened(and still do till this day) and was sad when he lost this cd. Years Later, I had my own collection but it was missing something. So I searched and searched and finally found it! I've seen the movie but I will always love this album. There's heavy, hard, laid back, funky, and truly bizzare, all are great.

1 out of 5 stars Judgement Night.......2007-03-12

I hated the music on this CD. The only track I liked on the whole CD was track 2 and I love it - I play that track over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack from a forgettable film. .......2007-01-10

If I remember correctly around the time this movie came out is when the film industry started to realize with a good soundtrack packed full of kick butt artists they could really draw in larger crowds and make more money off soundtrack sales. Well, this CD is one of many victims of that film industry marketing genius that came about in the early 90's that took some great artists of the day, and in my opinion made one of the must have movie soundtracks of its time for anyone who is a fan of rap, rock, metal, or alternative.

Sure the music itself is now going on 14 years old, but at the time this was one earth moving rap-rock masterpiece considering that the now classic Aerosmith/Run DMC and Anthrax/Public Enemy duets were the only real previous rap-rock collaborations in the public eye.

For the general Joe public I would say keep browsing and save your money. As for the fans of some of the artists that just need to hear those extra songs, like myself, or the genre that might be interested in hearing the tracks I would say go for it, but like any other CD not every song is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Forgot about this one.......2006-02-20

The movie sucked, but the soundtrack was a concept album that sadly went unnoticed. Before morons like Limp Biskit and Linkin Park ruined the rap/rock genre, this was probably the best all-around album of its kind, up there with the first couple Rage Against the Machine records. Standouts include what I consider Helmet's best song ever, "Just Another Victim," which is really two songs cut in half, with House of Pain borrowing the riff to make the latter minutes into great old-school hip hop. Slayer and Ice-T, Cypress Hill with Pearl Jam (the latter whom I usually HATE), and a brilliantly disturbing teaming of Faith No More and Boo-Yaa Tribe for "Another Body Murdered" (the first FNM song recorded after they fired original guitarist Jim Martin) are among the tightest and most intense here. Just stay away from the retarded title track by Onyx and Biohazard, it blows.

5 out of 5 stars The only good rap-rock ever recorded.......2005-12-11

Good rap-rock is rarer than giant diamonds. This here is the Koh-i-Noor of the genre. What?

In 1997, writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson boldly went where few other filmmakers have dared--America's multibillion-dollar pornography industry--and produced a clear-eyed portrait of '70s and '80s American cultural mores as lived out by an extened family of adult filmmakers and stars. Given the period, Anderson had a wealth of fond, cheesy pop to choose from (hence Vol. 2). Aside from a few shop-worn cuts (Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing," perhaps the most overexposed '70s hit of 1997), the remainder are notably fresh. The best: Sniff & the Tears' "Driver's Seat," Apollo 100's "Joy," and The Move's "Feel Too Good." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars So many good songs, glad to see a number 2!.......2006-11-04

Boogie Nights got me addicted to the song "Fooled around and Fell in Love". I always wondered why it wasn't on the soundtrack, also glad to see drivers seat, I can picture every scene in the movie when I hear these songs!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good compliation from a great movie.......2004-09-21

Boogie Nights let us know that we really loved the 70's and that we really ARE nostalgic for the music from the period - ALL THE MUSIC!

This second CD from the film soundtrack effectively provides us with more memories from not only the film, but from the era.

Apollo 100's Joy is a favorite as is Three Dog Night's Mama Told Me Not to Come.

Thought neither CD (CD 1 nor this one) contains Andrew Gold's Lonely Boy, which I really felt was emotionally a direct hit - so that's a bad thing.

Both of these CDs will share a welcome place in your house along with the DVD of the film.

5 out of 5 stars Put On Your "Boogie Shoes" With Dirk Diggler!.......2004-05-20

With Three Dog Night's warning song "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)", Elvin Bishop's regretful ballad, "Fooled Around and Fell in Love"
disco great, You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate and the FABULOUS, FUN Boogie Shoes by non other than KC & the Sunshine Band
Other highlights are "Do Your Thing" with Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, and "Driver's Seat" from one hit wonder Sniff 'n' the Tears.

Feel Too Good - The Move
Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield
J.P. Walk - Sound Experience
I Want to Be Free - The Ohio Players
Joy - Apollo 100 round out the CD.

Great listening that will either take you back to the 70's or the "Boogie Nights" movie or possibly... BOTH!

Happy Listening!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Collection, But Missing Several Selections.......2003-01-22

Vol.2 of Boogie Nights takes you through the 70's into the 80's with a great selection of music from the movie. The music takes you through the life of Dirk Diggler through the ups and downs of his life. The only thing lacking is that several songs were left off the cd including the classic Fleetwood Mac song "Tusk" and Devo's "Jerkin Back And Forth" which are included on the DVD version of the film. However the music makes you feel you are in the film and with Dirk through his journey. A must for any fan of the motion picture.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT COMPANION.......2001-09-19

.....to the first volume. This cd has even more great songs from the film. I love Driver's Seat and of course Boogie Shoes. It is a must that you pick up both volumes of this particular soundtrack. The variety of music is awesome and it will be well worth your money. I would have liked to have seen Lonely Boy by Andrew Gold, Fly Robin Fly by the Silver Connection, and Sunny by Boney M included. But hey....I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too!! ;) Regardless, these cds are well worth the money.

The producers of Mike Leigh's vibrant Topsy-Turvy took many big studio meetings seeking financing for their film. Word has it all went swimmingly until time for the pitch came--there are apparently no two words as unsettling to Hollywood film execs as "Gilbert & Sullivan." But the studio system's loss turned out to be the indie film's--and our--gain. Leigh's film brought the composers' late-19th-century mounting of their breakthrough The Mikado to an all-too-familiar life, filled with as many neuroses, foibles, and fragile egos as any modern Broadway musical. The film's score, an inviting pastiche adapted from Mikado (and other G&S staples) by veteran Carl Davis, may upset purists with its time-conscious liberties. But then, it might just win over a receptive yet unexposed new audience for whom this music may seem strangely familiar, as well it should: this is where modern musical theater began. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Here's a How-De-Do!.......2007-02-22

It's brilliant, really! I am a self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, and so the release of this soundtrack to accompany a truly delightful movie provided me with an "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!" moment ... many of them, actually! To hear some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite G & S operetti performed so well makes my heart "sing-o" - and me, too!

5 out of 5 stars Topsy-Turvy is TOPS!!!.......2007-02-21

This is Gilbert and Sullivan like you will never hear again! These performances are so fresh and alive with comedy flourish that my formerly "purist" ears reveled in delight at this magnificeant rendition of these great operettas. It is wonderful to hear excerpts from PRINCESS IDA,IOLANTHE and SORCERER (as well as THE MIKADO) when so many recordings already exist of the other G&S chestnuts,PINAFORE and PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
The actual cd itself fills the speakers and is a true listener's dream.A great soundtrack of a great film.Wonderfully recorded by SONY.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-02-25

This is a fantastic cd, one that I have listened to many many times without growing tired of it. The particularly nice thing about this cd for lovers of the movie is that you get to hear the entire performance for many songs which are necessarily cut short in the film, most enjoyably "A Wandring Minstrel I". As has been noted in other reviews, the vocal performances are not what you will typically find in other G & S recordings: they are far less burdened with mannered belle canto nonsense, to their immense benefit. And I must disagree with one reviewer who disparaged the staging as portrayed in the film. My wife and I saw a touring production of the Mikado which used the costumes and set from the movie, and it was fantastic. Even better, the performers seemed to take some cues from the film actors too, singing and performing in a way that was much more accessible and not a bit less pleasing.

4 out of 5 stars Better than many a G&S non-sountrack.......2003-09-16

I was compelled to get this after seeing the overlong, flawed, but nonetheless all-around amazing 'Topsy Turvy'. (Seriously - almost every supporting actor in the film deserved an Oscar, and Jim Broadbent was robbed; his Gilbert is magnificent and real.)
Inspired then to hear a true G&S performance, I bought several Carte recordings. What broke my heart is that the genuine Savoy performances are not as good as those of the 'Topsy' actors! Contrary to a review here, the articulation is just dandy. And the tenor in 'Wand'ring Minstrel' alone is far, far superior to the thin, reedy, annoying versions on the several concert cds I've heard. As is the riveting soprano on the beautiful 'The Sun Whose Rays...' of 'Topsy'; again, the actual Savoy recordings are merely shrill in comparison.
I remove one star only because of the necessarily abbreviated performances here.

5 out of 5 stars Put on the CD, close your eyes and..........2003-03-02

You are back in the Savoy Theater in Victorian England, watching a Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Mikado, or Yeoman of the Guard, or the Sorcerer, or Princess Ida. The qualiity of the music is superb, the voices are wonderful and I only wish I could have videos of all the G&S productions to watch along with the music.

Buy the DVD of Topsy-Turvy if you don't already own it. It's magnificent. See my other review.

This time around they've included the Guess Who's version of "American Woman," so we're off on the right foot. Sorry, Mr. Kravitz. This compilation of tunes from the second Austin Powers movie includes such obvious hits (yet obvious enough to be left off the first volume) as the Monkees' childlike and charming "I'm a Believer," Marvin Gaye's slinky "Let's Get It On," and the Zombies' eternally gasping "Time of the Season." To carry this soundtrack farther down classic rock road, the producers have included a sprightly remix (Calderone mix) of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger," Fantastic Plastic Machine's retro-goofy and aptly named "Bachelor Pad" (in your head, you can see Mike Myers going into back spasms), and a brand new Bangles song ("Get the Girl"), which might as well have been dusted off from 1966 with its tight harmonies and chiming 12-string guitars. Time to, uh, shag. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Music to shag to........2004-03-23

Maybe not as good as the first "Austin Powers" soundtrack, but still a great mix of random songs. Of course there's tunes from the era, like "I'm A Believer", "American Woman", "Let's Get It On", and the classic "Time Of The Season". Also 90's tracks from such diverse groups as "Lords Of Acid", "Fantastic Plastic Machine", and a movie related song from "They Might Be Giants". Plus a remix of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger". I'd say if you like the majority of these songs, or if this is your favorite movie, pick it up. It's the only way to find out how to get into "Heather Graham's" pants.

5 out of 5 stars you must buy this cd you will love it!!!.......2001-01-14

Being that I went to High School during the era their reunion

songs of the 80s.

Music had more meaning then and made more sense :)

4 out of 5 stars Uhhhh..........2003-07-27

Well, first off I would like to say how totally awesome this movie is. And then I will continue to say how this soundtrack, was really good...but...of course there's a but...it could have been better. I would have really liked to have heard "Time After Time". That is the perfict song. I was bummed to learn that the cd didn't have that song, but all in all, it was a great cd. I give it 4 stars...

5 out of 5 stars Everybody Wang Chung Tonight.......2003-06-17

This is one of the best CDs that has some of the most popular 80's songs on it. If you saw the movie and cherish the music of the 80's decade, then this is the CD for you. This CD features some of the greatest hits from groups such as, Bananarama, Tears for Fears, Wang Chung, Culture Club, and much more. My personal opinion of this soundtrack is that it is very upbeat, and will bring you back to the hip days of the 80's. If you enjoyed this CD, then check out Disc 2 of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars um. . ........2003-06-03

the music on this cd is great and all, but i was highly disappointed that they didn't include 'time after time'! they only played it twice in the film. . .

4 out of 5 stars A "Friday," album you could bump on a Sunday afternoon.......2000-07-23

This album can really get you moving, when things are going a little slow. It has some of the greats of "old school," and brings back all those old memories of the first time you heard these songs. The mix is the type you could have blasting at the neighborhood bar-b-q, or just go cruisin down Broadway on a Sunday evening bumping these classic tunes as you check out the other cars, and people. It has such a mix that all cultures/ethnic groups could enjoy and "get down to." With such artists such as War, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, and you can never forget Rick James. Then the artists just for you and your lady/man to sit back and listen to like the Temptations, and Rose Royce. A few other albums that feature a handful of these artists that you can also check out would be the Dead Presidents soundtrack (I highly recomend volume 2), or Bound by Honor. Other wise there are always the Motown collection's that feature a large majority of these artists. This album is truly worth it though. I do recomend it.

The price for the CD is ridiculous. I just watched Briget Jones 2 and was thinking about buying the CD. But both amazon and the merchants must think that the buying public is nuts if they think we would pay such an exorbitant price. It is not like buying a recording of Streisand or Elvis; it is just a soundtrack from a movie.
