Starsky & Hutch [Soundtrack]

starsky & hutch [soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews

The accompanying film recreates the original vibe of the '70s television show so brilliantly it's no wonder the producers decided to stick with the real thing for the soundtrack to Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson's hilarious remake of Starsky & Hutch. So no embarrassing contributions from Sugar Ray or OutKast (Anyone remember the unfortunate "Land of a Million Drums" from the Scooby Doo movie?), but a great if slightly used roller-disco soundtrack courtesy of the Jackson Five ("Dancing Machine") and KC & The Sunshine Band ("That's The Way I Like It"), balanced out by some marshmallow pop like Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight" and earnest country rock by Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues") and Waylon Jennings ("I'm a Ramblin' Man"). This is what the radio used to sound like before the robots took over. --Aidin Vaziri

3 out of 5 stars Where is Eric Clapton?.......2005-09-14

I think as a whole the soundtrack is good, but there are a
couple of songs that could have been left off. Dazz and Two Dragons come to mind. Don't Give Up On Us Baby? That one stunk when David Soul sang it!! Where are Bary Mantilow, Aerosmith and,
of course, Eric Clapton?

5 out of 5 stars Who Knew! (Owen Wilson could sing).......2005-01-07

"the album would have been better without the cover versions by Owen Wilson, Dan Finnerty, and Brigette Romanek. The originals are far superior."

I completely disagree ... regarding Owen's version of "Don't Give Up On Us Baby". I downloaded the original to listen to it again (it's been years) and I actually like Owen's rendition better! He really captured the simple beauty of the message .. perfectly. Hearing his voice on this album is a real delight. Don't get me wrong, I would give him a voice lesson or two if I knew him (I studied opera at U.T. and sing jazz) ... but overall, the feeling and message comes across beautifully and as usual I have become more smitten by his subtle and refreshing talent. I've even memorized a harmony part, so Owen, when you're ready, I'll be there! (with bells on my toes and everything) ;) The angel and the dreamer that sometimes plays a fool ... don't give up on us baby.

4 out of 5 stars Average soundtrack from a good movie.......2004-12-06

Just like the accompanying movie, the soundtrack to Starsky And Hutch is somewhat gentle fun without sticking in the memory too long. Things start off promising with Chicago's Old Days and Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. And Right Back Where We Started From is nice. The highlight is The Weight from EASY RIDER plus "Dancing Machine" and "That's The Way I Like It" bring back memories. However the inclusion of "I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You" is somewhat questionable. "I'm A Ramblin' Man" is sold, but Owen Wilson warbling "Don't Give Up On Us" irks. Regardless, a good soundtrack that fans of the film will enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Where's BM, Aerosmith?.......2004-08-27

I can't believe Barry Manilow and Aerosmith were left out. Looking at the quality of some of the other songs on the soundtrack, maybe it is better for them not to be associated with it. It is bad enough that the Carpenters tune is missing but "Can't smile without you" opens the movie and "Sweet emotion" ends it. The soundtrack should have followed that formula.

5 out of 5 stars MAXINE NIGHTINGALE's " RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM" .......2004-07-24

This is a great soundtrack!!
I love Maxine Nightingale's ... Right Back Where We Started from!..
finally on CD!!
Also recommend her website with samples of her songs..

This is a great collection of funk and soul classics, including some of the more obscure classics. "The Bottle" by Gil Scott Heron is outstanding, as are "Funkin' for Jamaica," "Rapper's Delight," "He's the Greatest Dancer," and so many others. A must for all disco/funk/soul-heads.
