The Cider House Rules: Music from the Miramax Motion Picture [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews

With its idyllic New England locales and multiple themes, director Lasse Hallstrom's version of John Irving's book presented composer Rachel Portman with some challenging, if deceptively simple, choices. Portman's main theme (imagine a pastoral Copland waltz), stated by solo piano and then orchestra, sets us firmly in the tranquil Maine countryside, while permutations of it continually shade the film's various dramatic intentions. It's a simple, time-honored device, yet one that carries the implicit danger of Repetitive Schmaltz Syndrome. But Portman's melodic construction here is so strong, and her arranging skills so multihued, that she ultimately pulls off the tricky balancing act and delivers a rewarding listening experience. --Jerry McCulley

Great for graduate work!.......2007-06-03
I'm not a music critic, but I love this album, perhaps even more than the movie! I have probably read (and written more!) academic papers while listening to it than anything else.
Not sure why, but unlike many other recordings, I find that I'm able to still perform cognitively intense work while listening to it -- and it beautifully complements the view of the green hills and river from our engineering library!
Excellent Music.......2007-04-29
I really enjoy this CD. The music is light and makes for great listening while doing other 'brain work' (i.e. working, studying, etc.).
Fantastic!!!.......2007-03-08
When I viewed this movie, I remember liking the soundtrack a lot, but didn't really listen that closely. I then heard an interview with Rachel Portman, the composer, on NPR, and I remembered the music and was so enthralled by how beautifu it is. I then purchased the soundtrack from Amazon. If you just like beautiful, orchestral music that has some melancholy themes (but not really classical,) you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, this soundtrack. It tugs and your heart.
Song?.......2004-08-18
What's the song that has the oooOooh oooOOooh? The strings are nicely accompanied by this lovely voice. It has a lot of depth.
I don't know what to say.......2001-08-13
I don't know what to say. This soundtrack is simply beautiful, touching and extraordinarily expressive. I'm sure Rachel Portman is one of the best hollywood composer's. If you like soft music, you'll like it. This music is now soft now vehement, playng by piano and orchestra. This soundtrack had an oscar nomination, had ONLY an oscar nomination, because It must win an oscar!
