Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

If Josh Groban's unabashedly melodramatic musical fusion inspires grousing on both sides of the classical/pop pundit divide, the screams of the (mostly) young female fans that punctuate these 2004 performances at L.A.'s historic Greek theater better underscore the real point. This set's CD and more expansive DVD complement each other well; if anything, supplemented by a live string ensemble and crack backing band, they're a warmer, more focused showcase for the singer's talents than the studio albums that made his meteoric fame. In peak form, Groban variously delivers forceful renditions of his pop-operatic powerhouses "Canto Alla Vita" and "Anna Luce Del Sole" (the former featuring a drum solo [!] from Groban, the latter a fine guest turn by Bela Fleck on banjo), takes a surprising solo piano break on Paul Simon's "America," waxes Central Asian on Troy's "Remember" and brings the crowd to its feet with the heart-on-his-sleeve dramatics of Closer's "Never Let Go." They're all informed by the singer's insouciant, youthful enthusiasm, arguing that Groban is gifted with more than just a magnificent voice; he's a complete natural as a performer as well. The DVD also includes a tour diary narrated with typical charm by the singer, as well as bonus live performance of "Believe" from the Polar Express soundtrack. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Josh Groban's 2002 PBS "Great Performances" special was a #1 selling DVD and the best-selling long-form music video of 2003. His second "Great Performances" special was taped at L.A.'s Greek Theater in the summer of 2004. For fans of the young sophisticated pop phenomenon who has sold more than 8 million albums, this CD+DVD package is just the latest great performance in the career of Josh Groban. DVD Extras: On the road with Josh for Summer 2004 Tour and a special performance of "Believe" from The Polar Express (it's PBS footage mixed w/ film footage).
Customer Reviews:
Josh is even better in live!.......2007-04-14
I recently saw Josh on his new tour with Awake, and it was so awesome that inspired me to buy this DVD to replicate the experience a little bit. I loved it! Especially loved the few extra songs I've never heard before (Mi Morena, America). Some people were complaining about the nasal sound and quality, but this is a live show so of course it sounds a little different. Bottom line is I think Josh is a great preformer and his very funny also :)
Very Good!.......2007-02-09
This CD/DVD was very good. I watched the DVD and was impresed with the way He handles the "spot light." He seems to be a very humble person and I think that is what makes his music so enjoyable to listen to. Not forgetting his awesome voice!
Let me explain..........2007-01-14
There are several reviews that talk about how annoying it is for the fans to wave light sticks and/or American flags in this DVD. Perhaps if I explain why, it will seem less annoying.
The waving of the light sticks was started at the very beginning of his first tour, mainly to show him how much the fans appreciated the concerts. The first idea was to wave them during the last verse of "You Raise Me Up," when the choir came out. Later, fans added another show of support by waving blue light sticks during "Vincent (Starry Starry Night."
OK, if you still find that annoying, that's your right. However, the flag waving at the end of "To Where You Are" was special. This concert was filmed on September 11, and the flags were waved at the end of "To Where You Are" for those who were lost, and the families of those who were lost, on 9/11/2001.
It's your right if you still find these things annoying. I just thought I'd try to help you to understand.
Since this is a forum for giving our opinions of the DVD, I have to say that I love it. He has a beautiful voice and I love listening to him under any circumstance. The DVD is wonderful, IMHO.
Re-Live the Concert Experience!.......2007-01-09
Was fortunate enough to attend Josh's "Closer" concert tour date at Jones Beach--amazing voice. Getting this album brought back all of the memories of that amazing evening outdoors under a "Starry, Starry Night." I used to not bother purchasing live albums because they had poor audio quality, but not anymore. Love this album! (Actually, I love all of his stuff.)
DVD is so worth the price.......2007-01-08
I disagree with some of the reviewers complaining about a nasal sounding CD. Yes, there are few parts where it may sound a little nasal but people have to remember that this a LIVE concert and if they wanted perfect sound they should buy the studio album instead. He still sounded brilliant and great. The DVD is fantastic for all those who don't have the luck or means to attend a Groban concert. It captures the energy and pure joy of a concert. Sometimes its even better than being at the concert because you can see Groban close up. I hope that there will be a concert DVD released for the AWAKE concerts.

Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08
Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.
Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01
Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.
True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18
If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.
lovely!.......2006-09-07
The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.
WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01
What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Customer Reviews:
simply amazing..........2007-02-05
This was my first Josh Groban album and definitely not my last. I've never been fond of opera for the simple reason that I disliked not knowing the words. Clearly that is not really the problem because as far as I'm concerned Josh can sing to me any language he wants. He has a rich smooth sound that reaches deep inside. I initially purchased this CD for "You Raise Me Up," and discovered a wealth of inspiring music. In mi mancherai (il postino), the duet with Joshua Bell is heart rendingly beautiful. My favorite is "When You Say You Love Me." It's romantic and touching. Throughout, Josh demonstrates a remarkable capacity for variation in his taste in music and his skill in presenting it. This extended version included a DVD that clued me into his latest project AWAKE, which I'm glad I purchased as soon as it became available. I hope to see much more by Josh soon.
Golden Voice!.......2007-01-09
This album has inspired me to begin learning Italian. I learned the words to "Oceano" by heart almost immediately. Not a single song on this album do I not like. Josh is an incredible singer--one of the best voices I have heard in a long time. This is actually the second time I have purchased this album, because I wanted to get the accompanying "Making Of..." DVD.
Wonderful music.......2006-06-13
This is the first album I bought from this artist and I loved it so much I bought all of them and then flew to Las Vegas to see the first concert I have ever been to--that sounds silly since I am over 60 and really think the music is wonderful!
Closer by Josh Groban.......2005-09-08
I am a big fan of Josh Groban so this CD is one of my favorites. His song, "You Raise Me Up" was recently sung at a dear friend's funeral, and there was not a dry eye in the church. Josh really delivers the message of each of his songs in such a professional and musically perfected manner. Keep on recording, Josh, because we all love you!
SSH
Josh Groban....extended edition.......2005-05-11
With the additional tracks Mi Morena and She's Out of My Life, Josh shows even more versatility to his second studio album, Closer.
Never ceasing to be amazing, Josh fills every note with a musicality and passion that many young pop stars seem to be incapable of commandeering.
Josh's musicality clearly shines through as he shows his ability to not only sing like an angel but also compose lyrics, orchestrate arrangements, and accompany himself on the piano.
A must for fans of his first album and his unique style.

Wonderful, sensitive playing...........2003-11-02
Ah, reader, consider this album. I have been listening to Bayless music for years, from Bach Meets the Beatles to his crazy happy birthday album in a dozen styles (Stravinsky's Rite of Birthday, a favorite), but this one has something special going on. The playing is so beautifully, and sensitively played that one is really swept away by the original movie tune, interwound with a classical piece, so seamless and amazing. One of my all-time favorite albums.
John Bayless is awesome.......2003-10-13
He's such a great talent, I was lucky enough to meet him almost 2 years ago. I got this CD autographed! :) He was such a nice person and performed so well on the stage. Buy this album, it's really awesome!
The One CD in My Collection I Never Tire of Listening To.......2001-03-24
John Bayless had a vision for this album---to combine the most beautiful classical pieces along with the most romantic and engaging movie themes of all time. The arrangements and the way in which he weaves the varous pieces together, sometimes playing both themes simultaneously, are incredible. They lift you up and carry you away. The various instrumental additions (such as the guitar in track 2, drums in track 6, strings in track 5, the sound of the wind in track 4) add just the right touch---lightly sprinkled in when needed. As a professional pianist myself, I also appreciate his considerable technique and the emotion with which he infuses his music. Anyone who likes classical music and movies should own this CD. Anyone who has friends who like classical music and movies should purchase this CD for them. They will love you for it. It is my favorite CD. I never tire of listening to it.
Gorgeous arrangements. Very dramatic and melodic........1999-11-16
Don't be scared off by the "clown-like" picture on the cover. This album, by a true piano virtuoso/arranger, blends familiar movie and light classical melodies together into unique arrangements. Every time it's been on while I have guests, someone always asks "What's that beautiful music?"

Album Description
In the midst of an unpredictable election year, what better band to resurface than the once and future leaders of buoyant, absurdist rock - the Presidents of the United States of America? The newly reunited PUSA has been in the studio cooking up a new platform for playfulness in rock, featuring 14 songs including the already hit single "Some Postman."
Since the band's split in December 1997, fans have been sending letters and e-mails urging them to reunite and asking why they broke up in the first place. Twelve months earlier, the Seattle-based trio has released II, the follow-up to their wildly successful 1995 self-titled Columbia Records debut. Initially released on the idie label PopLlama, The Presidents of the United States of America went double platinum, rocketed all the way to #6 on Billboard's Top 200, produced three Top 40 hits and a #1 single on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, and garnered two Grammy nominations and a gaggle of critical praise. Their videos blanketed MTV, they toured the planet, played a live MTV concert at Mount Rushmore, and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Howard Stern Show and Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve. As if that weren't enough, II spawned another Top Ten modern rock hit, "Mach 5," and the band contributed a rocking cover of "Video Killed the Radio Star" to the platinum-selling soundtrack to Adam Sandler's The Wedding Singer. At the end of the line, Pure Frosting included a cover of the Ian Hunter song "Cleveland Rocks," which was used as the theme song to the Emmy-nominated Drew Carey Show.
For their new album, the band recorded basic tracks at Egg Studios with Conrad Uno (Posies, Supersuckers, Young Fresh Fellows) and at Jupiter Studios with Martin Feveyear (Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan). The new songs run the gamut, though one tune, "Some Postman," has already proven itself after being leaked onto Seattle's KNDD and subsequently turned into a highly-requested local hit. The band will also re-release their eponymous multi-platinum debut this fall along with a DVD including their hit videos, live and interview footage. Nine years later, songs - smart, tuneful and exhilarating - from The Presidents of the United States of America still hold up.
Customer Reviews:
Great to See Them Back but the Album Seems a Bit Rushed!.......2006-09-24
The President of the United States are definitely one of the most unique sounding bands out there and that unique style is more than recognisable on this album. However the quality of these songs is not up there with the original albums they had before their retirement. It is almost like they have been enticed to come out of retirement and written these songs in a couple of days to get an out of retirement album out there in the market place. I can't see them having a big hit off this album but the songs do grow on you a little bit after a few plays. Great to see them back, a lot of the original fans like me will buy this just to hear something new from them but they'll have to put a bit more effort into their next album to attract new fans and survive.
The Presidents of Pop-Punk.......2005-07-14
Much like coming out of the Seattle grunge scene in the early nineties, laughing in the face of all that was over the top gloom, dread, and misery in music; The Presidents of The United States of America (or POTUSA) have once again arrived at just the right time. While most bands are getting their kicks on emo, POTUSA is back with hooks so catchy, and lyrics so hilariously clever, it'll send any self-righteous scenester running for the hills.
Highlight songs include the perverse "Drool At You" Which hilariously walks the line between creepy obsession and pure cuteness, and one hell of a catchy synth line to boot. "Some Postman", another song about sick obsession packaged with sweet pop goodness. Honestly there is not one song on this album to scoff at, unless you are some uptight music snob afraid to have fun.
This is the most impulsive and fast POTUSA album yet. Anyone turned off by songs about little bugs or the country twang in the debut should be very pleased to hear that "Love Everybody" delivers a brand new sound right off the bat. Songs like "Shreds of Boa" and "5,500 Miles" spare the silliness and bring the rock and roll. Those who loved the sound of self titled, well at least you'll love the old school themed track, "Munky River"
The fun and tongue-in-cheek humor never lets up on this album, making it hands-down the best pop-punk album since Mr. T Experience's "Revenge Is Sweet, And So Are You". It's a great album to get if you want to get under the skin of that emo kid who lives down the hall. Blast those geeky tunes with pride, brave music fan; and to the Presidents, I salute you.
I am an Extreme PUSA fan, so take it from me..........2005-04-07
this CD is okay. i love the presidents and this CD was still a good buy but you would be much better off buying a different one... "Shreds of Boa" and "Poke and Destroy" are really good though...
Extremely Refreshing.... and Fun.......2005-03-17
The Presidents of the United States of America (PUSA) were one of my favorite bands of the large litter of off-kilter 90's bands when I was younger, and it's very refreshing to see a great 90's band such as these guys make a great album these days in an industry composed of bland, talentless rock, especially when most of their peers from the 90's have been rather disappointing as of recent.
The album is stacked full of hit songs ('Love Everybody', 'Zero Friction', 'Highway Forever', 'Surf's Down', 'Munky River', and of course 'Some Postman'). It's amazing that after nearly a decade and a few albums along the way, PUSA have managed to maintain their style and finesse and make an album that as always, is FUN to listen to. Their songs's quirkiness and funny/catchy lyrics are what has always embodied their music, and made PUSA who they are.
The album is not as good as their debut, but is a close second in my opinion, and a must-have album for not only a PUSA fan, but for anyone who's into good music that rocks.
Holy sweet awesome Batman!.......2005-02-18
Once upon a time, I discovered the Presidents. They were simply amazing. Then they left, and my world was a little darker... But now, they are back. "Love Everybody" is freakin' sweet. Buy it. Buy it now and buy a copy for your friend. Share the love. Seriously though, it's amazing how PUSA has stayed true to their fun, goofy songs about basically nothing while still keeping completely involved with their music. I'm not sure if the previous sentence made sense, so allow me to rephrase: BUY EVERY PRESIDENT'S ALBUM EVER. Love Everybody has so much to offer and, just like all of their other albums, there is not one song that I don't like. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. That is all.
Other note: I give this album five stars, but for some reason stupid amazon wouldn't let me change my rating.

The barest glimpse of John Williams.......2006-08-15
John Williams is one of the world's best guitarists, but you'd never know it by listening to this album. He basically plucks out the melody. I think I hear more complex playing in the background, but if that's what it is, it's mixed so as to be barely audible. On the other hand, it's very nice background music. I hope brisk sales support Williams' more serious efforts.
Maybe it'll grow on me.......2004-07-28
If I were not a guitarist myself, I would find this collection very very charming. Certainly the selections are beautiful, and Williams is renowned for one of them: Stanley Myers' "Cavatina" from THE DEER HUNTER. It's just that for me this recording does virtually nothing for either the guitar or the lovely pieces selected for this rather peculiar alteration. I'm just not sure that this kind of project, where a virtuoso SOLOIST is brought in to ACCOMPANY an orchestra (Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma have done similar recordings) is a winner; not even five percent of Williams' prodigious technique is anywhere to be heard and he just sounds so irrelevant. (I'd usually expect to hear this kind of thing from Liona Boyd.) That being acknowledged though, the melodies ARE perfectly lovely and Mr. Williams HAS throughout his great career done many brilliant recordings of dense and difficult music that leave one's mouth agape. I suppose he's earned this little vacation.
Very Good!!!.......2002-09-15
I like this CD very much, I have looked for it for 5 years since I listened its MP3, I got it now, thanks!
disappointing.......2001-04-24
While this album is pleasant enough, it is more orchestra music than classical guitar. John Williams is a great classical guitarist, but the guitar part on this album could have been played by any competent guitarist. If you want nice background music, this album is ok. If you want classical guitar music, look elsewhere.
Williams' Winning Style Captures Film Scores.......2000-08-25
If you like film music, this CD is for you; if you like guitar music, this CD is for you. John Williams brings his guitar virtuosity to bear masterfully on the scores of a number of popular films, which span a period of 60 years.
The use of the guitar gives a different sound to number of the selections, and shows that a good piece of music will shine, no matter what the instrumentation.

Customer Reviews:
Sheer beauty from Agnes Baltsa.......2005-06-23
This disc from Agnes Baltsa (Greek opera-singer) containing the most beautiful Greek songs is a real treat. It's recorded in the -80s when she was around 40 and in her prime. The songs are written by famous Greek composers like Theodorakis, Hadjidakis and Tsitsanis. My only complaint is that the cd only contains 11 songs. I wish it had at least 11 more.... But fortunately, my cd-player has a "repeat-button".......(Which I might add, is soon worn-out..)
For people unfamiliar with either Greek music or opera, this is the place to start. To me it seems that Greek music often is a matter of strong likes/dislikes, as is opera. You either love it or you hate it. After listening to this disc you will definitely want to seek out more recordings of Greek music and/or opera-recordings featuring Agnes Baltsa.
I know and love Agnes Baltsa from the opera stage, but even so, this record still amazes me. You will not hear her belt out painfully high notes like an opera-star on this cd - just beautiful singing throughout the whole disc. She also has a clear phrasing which I think is great, because it enables me to understand what the songs are all about. Being a classically trained singer one should perhaps think her voice unsuitable for simple-styled Greek folk songs. You couldn't be more wrong. Her crystal clear voice lends an elegancy to the songs that has to be heard to be believed. I'm a long time fan of Greek music and own a lot of recordings from various Greek artists, but never have I heard these songs so beautifully sung. This is definitely my "desert-island-recording" of Greek songs. I never tire of hearing them played again and again and again....
My favourite tracks from the disc have to be "Oniro pedion tis gitonias", "to treno fevgi stis okto", "O tahidromos" and "Arhontissa" and not to mention "Varkarolla". Her voice is just so hauntingly beautiful in these tracks. Don't be surprised if you end up in tears. But really, all the tracks are real treasures, gift-wrapped in Baltsa's velvet voice. It's a treat to hear Baltsa sing in her native tongue for the first time. It's obvious that she feels perfectly at ease here. She captures the melancholic beauty of the Greek soul so wonderfully. To me it's a mystery why she hasn't recorded more of this sort (at least I haven't been able to find any...)
The Athens Experimental Orchestra which is playing on this disc also deserves some words of praise. They make the Greek instruments sound heavenly and in the instrumental parts of the songs you just want to get up and dance.
This disc is really a proof of Greek supremacy - the music, the lyrics and Agnes Baltsa's singing - so simple and yet so powerful and breathtakingly beautiful. What more can I say? Just buy the cd ASAP!
A Wonderful Collection.......2004-12-10
This album was first released by Deutsche Grammophon (DG) in 1986 under the title "Agnes Baltsa, Songs My Country Taught Me." I have owned it and enjoyed it for probably 15 years. It's a wonderful collection of very melodious Greek folk songs with fine arrangements sung by one of the great mezzo sopranos of our time. It's great that DG has seen fit to re-release it so many of you can also enjoy it. Buy it; you won't regret it.
