Toon Tunes: Funny-Bone Favorites is the sort of record that can be unsettling to those of us who approach the world with egalitarian, "are we really all that different" mindsets. Could so many people be clamoring for a compilation of cartoon themes, some of them aggressively irritating, others completely unrecognizable? Count out the kitsch factor and things get really scary. Keeping that in mind, what Funny-Bone Favorites presents, however, is enough to keep us tuned in. As this 36-track screwball marathon wears on, every third song or so is familiar, even if it doesn't exactly deliver us in front of the TV sets of yore and plant a giant bowl of Honeycomb in our hands. Four of the first five jingles--"The Flintstones," "The Jetsons," "George of the Jungle," and "The Bullwinkle Show"--cut, thanks to modern-day cable access, through great generational swaths, getting even Grandma in on the swing of things. Popping up like wrong turns for drivers in memory lane, though, are tracks like "Pinky and the Brain," "Dexter's Laboratory," and "The Ren & Stimpy Show." On the flip side, hipsters hoping to raise their retro-cool factor will like reaching back to plucky, late-'60s-sounding gems like the theme to "The Banana Splits" (Tra-la-la!"), but may be resistant to dusting off the really old ditties--"Bozo the Clown," "Mickey Mouse March," and "Donald Duck" among them. Forgetting all campiness, and even moving away from cartoon land momentarily, two solidly musical excuses for owning this disc can't be denied--the themes to "Peanuts" and "The Pink Panther." Buy it because they're on it, or because the "Huckleberry Hound" song haunts you. --Tammy La Gorce

Themes of Dreams.......2006-04-21

Anyone interested in animation will be amazed at this cornucopia of cartoons themes. But there is another audience that includes nearly everyone. As I write, nearly everyone has some cartoon theme lodged not far down in the recesses of their cortex, and it's associated with fond memories. The truly Herculean effort involved with this project was obtaining all the copyright permissions; it cuts across studios with songs owned by Hanna-Barbera and Cartoon Network, Nick, Disney and other less-known names. If only this would work for DVDs: all the cartoons we long to see would be readily available, including Woody Woodpecker, Eek the Cat and The Alvin Show. Happily Pinky and the Brain is making/ made it out in 2006.

Reading any book on the history of animation shows that most of these songs have a story behind them. Play one, and like the Pied Piper, a parade of fans will instantly follow. These songs arguably belong to the moment and wear their pedigrees on their sleeves, but there is still something universally appealing about many of them. Having said that, some, like the Rugrats theme, which perfectly syncs to the engaging opening visuals, seem simple without the accompanying graphics.

But this collection doesn't make us so much muse whistfully for the past when these 'toons were on TV, as dream of the future when they make it onto DVD. Taken as a whole, the combined fan base for all these varied 'toons is gigantic, and probably outnumbers the audience for any of the recent live action shows studios now race to bring out on DVD. Obviously, the studios don't get it, and the market share for cartoons goes begging. Collections like this one might help tilt the skewed demographics, their clientele shouting, or rather singing, in one concerted chorus: "Hey! We want cartoons!"

Cartoon-arific Crowd Pleaser .......2004-11-27

This is a great album to play whenever people are gathered together. People of different generations and backgrounds will respond to the music that they remember from their childhoods. For me its the Banana Splits infectious "Tra La La Song" that gets me jumping around like a sugar-cereal fueled kid again. And everybody loves the Ren & Stimpy theme song, and the Peanuts theme song, both of which are very dance-able.

Funny Bone Favorites is the coolest CD ever! While you have some super-classics like Donald Duck and some new ones like Inspector Gadget! While kids will get a kick out of their favorite shows, adults will also get the point with this CD! This is such an awsome CD, you won't believe what hit you! This CD features many memories and will also produce new song favorites, including remixes! While the kids will say, "Wow, whata great CD!," the adults may say, "Uggh! This song again?" But don't sweat, this CD may be a long-lost CD after a few weeks!

I think this cd is so funny my favorites are PIXIE & DIXIE and THE LOONY TUNE SONG. If you have kids they will love it and I bet you will to!

We really love this one!!! Especially the version of the PIXIE & DIXIE theme, WOODY WOODPECKER theme and the POPEYE tune! A very interesting mix of songs sure to delight the whole family!!!RHINO is also to be commended for releasing archival CDs like this to preserve the history of ANIMATION! Love their THAT'S ALL FOLKS CD collection and their HANNA-BARBERA PIC-A-NIC Basket box set! Now if they will release more of the HANNA-BARBERA library for all to enjoy!
