Editorial Reviews

Most soundtracks for movie blockbusters are a mixed bag, and this one is no exception. The Ali soundtrack is heavily weighted toward R&B, and on that front the album is a success, despite R. Kelly's two horrendously saccharine power ballads. There's no denying the greatness of classic tracks like Aretha Franklin's supremely melancholy "Ain't No Way" and Al Green's live rendition of "A Change Is Gonna Come," and David Elliot continues the old-school theme, with a warm and bluesy remake of "Bring It On Home to Me." Alicia Keyes's "Fight" channels the '70s vibe of James Brown's Funky People, and the fabulous Angie Stone breaks it down and keeps it moving with "20 Dollars." Things go awry when it comes to the rock & roll selections. Everlast's blues-rock posturing on "The Greatest" is irksome, and the Watchtower Four's remake of the classic Bob Dylan song "All Along the Watchtower" (done best by Jimi Hendrix) is a travesty. Topnotch contributions by cello virtuoso Martin Tillman, former Dead Can Dance vocalist Lisa Gerrard, and Afropop superstar Salif Keita help balance things out. --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Soundtrack I Have Ever Heard.......2006-06-27

This has got to be the single greatest soundtrack that i have heard to this date. I have watched the movie over and over again, and the performance by Will Smith is incredible, and they have made a soundtrack to match the intensity of the motion picture. Besides Al Green, R. Kelly, and Alicia Keys coming up with great tracks to match the movie, Salif Keita's "Tomorrow" tops off this soundtrack as my all time favorite. I jog, lift weights, and go to sleep listening to this song. I have got to say that the editors of this one really outdid themselves. Great Job!!

1 out of 5 stars They are Missiong Songs from The Movie !.......2005-10-30

I would say get this for the Song tommorow by Saif keta but the One song if you Watch the Flim very Closly was when Ali and his brother paid Jamie Fox a visit in the Hotel and Ali riding on the Train , That Track was By Johnny Farmer a Old school Blues song Called Death Letter , with Great vocals this song is not on Soundtrack "why? It is the best song in the whole damn Movie
I wonder where I can get it like it was song in the Movie ?
if you know let me know !

3 out of 5 stars Change Coming.......2005-03-15

There's a few songs on this soundtrack that are really good, especially the song by Al Green. Aretha has a good song on here. There's some nice tracks. I really enjoyed a few songs. Then there are others that are not good at all, and I have never listened to them completely because they left a lot to be desired. It's good anyway, because the few strong songs are really good enough to make it worth it to purchase this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring - 4.5 stars.......2003-01-24

A truly powerful soundtrack from a powerful movie. First off id like to state to some people who reviewed this cd stating its not the music in the film. If your looking for music straight from a film then buy the score!!!! Now back on subject, ive rated each song out of 5 so you can get the overall feel (because most soundtracks are pick and choose).

1- the worlds greatest - 5/5
2- fight - 5/5
3- hold on - 5/5
4- a change is gonna come - 5/5
5- aint no way - 3.5/5
6- sometimes - 3/5

7- 20 dollars - 4/5
8- for your precious love - 3/5
9- bring it on home to me - 4.5/5
10- Ali the greatest - 4.5/5
11- mistreated - 5/5
12- tommorow - 5/5 - UNBELIEVABLE, I challenge you to find a more powerful song
13- all along the watchtower - 5/5
14- odessa - 5/5
15- see the sun - 5/5

Overall this soundtrack is very jazzy and soulful. I'm normally not one to buy soundtracks but I am a huge fan of Cassius Clay so I thought id give this a try and i'm glad I did.

The spoken tracks are hilarious, but the music is only alright...
A few tracks stand out, like "Wicked", for those of you who have seen the movie, the song that is playing while Ali is driving around in his car in the beginning...
Overall, I like this album, but if I was reccomending this to a customer, I would recommend buying it used, or downloading it, as the songs are highly available online, if you know where to look...
Thanks,

5 out of 5 stars So Drop Da Bomb..........2002-12-02

I'm not certain how much America knows about Ali G, so here's a quick background. Sacha Baron Cohen is a middle-class Englishman of Jewish descent who created the wannabe "gangsta" Ali G as a send-up of those white youths who listen to hip-hop and British Garage (a derivation of hip-hop, dance hall, jungle and RnB) and think of themselves as black. Ali G fetched up with his own TV show - which is very good, by the way - and then with this film, dealing with his time in Parliament.

The soundtrack of "Ali G Indahouse" is very strong, regardless of how much the listener knows about the man or the movie. It's presented as a pirate radio program "comin to you out of da ghettos of Berkshire" with Ali as the host. Unsurprisingly, the selections on this program cover Ali G's biggest influences. There's garage (Ms Dynamite's "Dynamite", So Solid Crew's "Ride Wid Us" and Oxide and Neutrino's "Shoot To Kill"), dance hall reggae (Backyard Dog's "Baddest, Ruffest"), hip-hop (Foxy Brown and Ja Rule both make appearances) and RnB (Another Level). The sequencing is a little haphazard, but this problem is not a major one as a result of the "radio show" element.

Ali G also drops three stone-cold classics of early hip-hop, at least one of which has appeared on his show. NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" is given a rewind treatment and sounds as fresh today as when it was written - and quite frankly puts the MCs around it to shame. Public Enemy's "Fight The Power", with its Bomb Squad production and heavy politics, is a little out-of-place surrounded by the apolitical stuff of the rest of the soundtrack. Of course, that might be the point. The last actual "song" is Afrika Baambaataa and Soul Sonic Force's legendary "Planet Rock" in its full glory. Quite frankly, this alone is worth the price of purchase.

What really steals the show for me are Ali G's little "skits" in between some of the tracks. Part of Ali's humour is that he often reveals exactly how uncool he is when trying to be cool. The intro, for example, has him "bigging up" the various gangs around his home town of Staines and inadvertently mentioning one twice. His introduction of Ms Dynamite has to be heard to be believed - "Dis track is gonna blow up like what? Yeah, you guessed it, like dynamite. Sure it doesn't come in boxes with the word 'dynamite' on dem...", as well as his discussion of the violence inherent in garage music ("dem claim - illegibly illegibly - dat dese boys is about violence") before throwing to a song entitled "Shoot To Kill". Other highlights of this nature include his shout outs prior to Nelly's cut, shout outs ranging from his friends through to Puff Daddy and Wyclef Jean, and his incredible introduction of Shaggy ("You may fink he's Mr Boombastic/But in real life him a bit of a spastic/Take it away Mr reggae fantastic/der der der der der der piece of plastic/der der der der der der knicker elastic").

Partly as a result of this introduction, the standout track is Shaggy and Ali's duet of "Me Julie". This song, theoretically about their respective girlfriends, is utterly marvellous. Shaggy delivers one of his better vocal performances ever, along with some very interesting asides, while Ali's contribution after telling Shaggy "me can rap too" is marvellous. While some of the other cuts here are unintentionally funny, "Me Julie" glories in its humour and is thus far and away the strongest cut here.

Overall, Ali G's humour may not be to everyone's tastes, but that is no reason not to buy this CD. Some of the tracks here are very hard to come across in any other setting, while the skits and general "Ali G" quality will provide an extra dimension to the listener receptive to this sort of humour. Very much a worthwhile album.

After last year's Girl with a Pearl Earring, this CD confirms the much-deserved rise of French-born composer Alexandre Desplat in Hollywood. The success of this particular score is actually double-edged: It works wonders in the film because it never dictates the mood or imposes a viewpoint; instead, it's in such symbiosis with the images in Stephen Gaghan's political thriller that at times the music's impact is almost subliminal. That's a good thing when you watch the movie, but it also means that on its own, the CD's focus can fade in and out. Desplat tends to follow the less-showy European film-scoring model, i.e. he prefers subtlety to bloated orchestrations and tends to refrain from associating characters to musical themes. Though much of the film's action takes place in the Middle East, Desplat doesn't turn ethnic instrumentation into a cliché. And the way he instills a pervasive sense of dread on tracks such as "Driving in Geneva," "Access Denied," or "The Abduction" should be taught in film and music schools. For Desplat, less is always more. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tight, haunting, complex.......2006-06-28

As the product description states above, this score mirrors the film by being appropriately understated and nuanced. The title track is both melancholy and haunting, a feeling which runs through the entire soundtrack. Other parts have quite a bit of tension. One gets the feeling that there is always something bubbling under the suface here -- nothing is as it seems, which of course, is the intention of the film. Alexandre Desplat did a stellar job.

5 out of 5 stars Tense and really exciting.......2006-06-26

This is a good soundtrack. When I listen to it, I was just feeling that I was being into a tense place in it. Especially, track 1, 5, 7, 10 brought me to the real experience for it. So, if you love the movie, I bet you must love this too. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars Syrania Names That Tune in Arabic, Farsi and French (with English subtitles).......2006-01-13

Remember the portrayal of Jim Garrison by Kevin Kostner, and Donald Sutherland playing the role of a
deepthroat-type character sitting on the park bench? and "Mr. X" explaining the Naval Intelligence
connection to the Kennedy assassination? Sutherland named the tune.

Like a Jazz composition without a melody line or a chorus we get to hear - like outa nowhere, the actors
in the Syrania movie break from one solo to the next held together by a constant real life drum beat we
already know from OPEC-related gas lines in the 1970s, $3 per gallon gasoline this past summer, and now our
winter heating bills. Oil and drugs now, or water of the future. Listen: You can hear the soundtrack
from Traffic, the 2000 heroin movie.

Each actor in this Syriana ensemble interprets the line with a careful ear to what the other players are
saying. During Syriana, one cameo role actor (William Hurt), leans to the Syrania CIA
agent (George Clooney), and out of audience hearing range whispers the name of the tune - an old standard
entertainment prone news junkies learned from Three Days of the Condor (the 1975 movie)
or Six Days of the Condor (the book by James Grady).

Syriana, as a movie is in fact a close re-make from just one break-out scene in Three Days of the
Condor; picking up from the downstairs meet between Turner (Robert Redford), the "Alsatian gentleman"
Joubert (Max von Sydow) and "The CIA mastermind" Atwood (Addison Powell), and when the name of the
mastermind's tune is revealed. Then much to Turner's surprise, Joubert kills Atwood. Shoots him right in
the head with a gun equipped with a silencer.

Add to this Three/Six Days and/or the Syriana stack the 1953 overthrow of Mossadeq. The Mossad
assassinations of the Munich terrorists. The Beirut Barracks Bombing (which Mossad had a video of, but
didn't bother to warn the 220 Marines and 21 other U.S. service members killed that day).

See the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, blamed on Syria. See the inadvertent
transfer of a Stinger missile to the wrong guys. See the death of the Shah, or King Faud, and their
respective offspring. Take your pick.

See the historic CIA support of Usama bin Laden's boys in Afghanistan, in their war against the Soviets.
See the CIA support of the MKO terrorists in the 1980s, and now again in 2005 - against the founders and
followers of Imam Khomeini's Islamic Revolution.

See today's headliner, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the Iranians Moving Ahead with Nuke Production.
See the mysterious plane crash last night that killed Ahmad Kazemi, the commander of Iran's Pasdaran
Revolutionary Guards.

Not unrelated, see British Lawyers Linked to $1m Payment for Favours at the US Congress, and
The DeLay-Abramoff Naftasib Oil (Russia) Money Trail.

Don't forget who "they" is. They Tried Twice to Assassinate Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.

Or, as movie critic Bruce Kirkland says, "The C.I.A. seems to be serving the interests of the U.S. oil
industry" and "Syriana is several parallel plot lines running concurrently..."

If you want to see the past and present, or where the tune is going, Syriana (the movie) is a two hour
plus ticket that goes lightning quick, and like The Matrix (1999), Syrania should be seen a half dozen
times to get it just right.

Michael Mann's warts-'n'-all biopic of three-time heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali spans the most triumphant and turbulent decade of the legend's career. But like many a film marketing plan, its first soundtrack release seemed more concerned with selling CDs to those less familiar with Ali--and oddly, Mann's powerful film itself--than with accurately documenting the film's true musical soul. This second volume corrects that misstep, collecting much of Lisa Gerrard's and previous collaborator and former Dead Can Dance sideman Pieter Bourke's atmospheric, largely electronic underscore as well as an eclectic, less obviously pop-conscious slate of songs and music by Chicago bluseman Mighty Joe Young, nouveau R&B drum/bass/vocal merchants Dungeon East and Whild Peach, trans-genre cellist Martin Tillman, and Malian vocal legend Salif Keita. It's a release that variously seems better attuned to the director's own adventurous tastes in film scoring, more emblematic of Ali's own complex character and international legacy--and, more importantly, an ambience-rich document of the film's true musical and artistic spirit. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magic moments.......2005-08-05

As usual, Michael Mann proves to have very good taste when it comes to the soundtrack for his movies. Forget about the 1st ALI CD that was released, this one is the real soundtrack for the movie. I agree that I really miss Salif Keita's "Tomorrow" but the other song featured here measures up to it. NOW YOU MUST LISTEN TO THE FIRST TRACK CAREFULLY. This piece of music is heard during the first fight in the movie, and though this is a shorter version on the CD, it is a genuine gem. The drums are totally mad and make you wonder how many hands the drummer had. Also when the bass guitar comes in, followed by the Hammond organ, it simply drives me mad to the point I sometimes listen to this track up to 10 times in a row when I drive to work.

4 out of 5 stars almost there.......2002-04-23

I am excited to buy this CD to get the music of Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke - the real musical stars of this film - for their excellent, emotional and heavily memorable score. However I am sorry that the Serif Keita track "Tomorrow" - which is easily the most pivitol musical scene in the film, was not included on this collection and was rather fed to the "less carings" on the "STAR" soundtrack #1. I would have loved to have its compliment here, where all the other emotional tracks have been comiled. But otherwise I am glad to see thios music worthy of its own release... because it IS. This is the real soundtrack to the film, ya'll. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Ali Score.......2002-03-13

This is the soundtrack that should have been released instead of the first CD. Although at least you don't have to put up with any R. Kelly tracks this time. As a bonus you get Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke's excellent score, the only downside is you don't get the track See The Sun featured on the first release. A definite purchase.

      Album Description

Original music from the film by Renaud Delourme from the photographic works of Yann Arthus-Bertrand

The music of La Terre vue du Ciel (The Earth from Above) is the score to a film that was created to bring the astounding aerial photography of Yann Arthus-Bertrand to the screen. Arthus-Bertrand's work was presented as the Earth from Above exhibition at the Luxembourg Gardens, and he became famous instantly. His photography shows the earth as a living entity, in a light that can't be known from our daily perspective. The film maker Renaud Delourme approached Arthus-Bertrand about making a film out of his work, and Armand Amar was chosen to compose the score. The music, reflective of the photography it accompanies, is varied across many styles and genres, each section crafted to perfectly compliment Arthus-Bertrand's work. This package includes a lavish book that presents many of the now-legendary photographs in full color.

4 out of 5 stars The Big Yes Yes.......2003-05-23

I bought this specifically for the "The Big No No" tracks, though I found the majority of it quite listenable. In case anyone's interested, The Big No No songs were done by Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer, with vocals by Norwegian band Belcanto's singer Anneli Drecker. I suggest picking up anything by Gavin Friday if you found No No appealing - you won't be dissapointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Totally infatuated.......2002-05-15

I've lost count of all the soundtrack CD's I now own but "Angel Baby" remains one of my favorites.

I have no idea who are the "The Big No No" but their songs on this album are definitely yes yes. The vocalist (Anneli M. Drecker?) switches between demon possessed (but in a good way) and a little girl. I've listened to it a zillion times and have yet to tire of it.

The mix also really works -- Ustad Nusrat is awesome as usual, Peter Gabriel is terrific. Heck, it's all terrific.

Great movie, too, by the way. It makes the sane feel like they've missed out.

        5 out of 5 stars damn good.......2001-09-18

I just finished watching the movie a few minutes ago, and had to immediatly jump online a buy the soundtrack. It flowed perfectly with the movie, and is very moving. I was upset that they did not include enya's song on the CD, which was in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST SOUNDTRACK EVER.......1999-04-02

Though I've never heard of this movie, the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever listened to. I'd rate it up there with the GODZLLA soundtrack as one of the best.
