Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Choreographer-turned-director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Lenny) turns the camera on himself in this nervy, sometimes unnerving 1979 feature, a nakedly autobiographical piece that veers from gritty drama to razzle-dazzle musical, allegory to satire. It's an indication of his bravura, and possibly his self-absorption, that Fosse (who also cowrote the script) literally opens alter ego Joe Gideon's heart in a key scene--an unflinching glimpse of cardiac surgery, shot during an actual open-heart procedure.

Roy Scheider makes a brave and largely successful leap out of his usual romantic lead roles to step into Gideon's dancing pumps, and supplies a plausible sketch of an extravagant, self-destructive, self-loathing creative dynamo, while Jessica Lange serves as a largely allegorical Muse, one of the various women that the philandering Gideon pursues (and usually abandons). Gideon's other romantic partners include Fosse's own protégé (and a major keeper of his choreographic style since his death), Ann Reinking, whose leggy grace is seductive both "onstage" and off.

Fosse/Gideon's collision course with mortality, as well as his priapic obsession with the opposite sex, may offer clues into the libidinal core of the choreographer's dynamic, sexualized style of dance, but musical aficionados will be forgiven for fast-forwarding to cut out the self-analysis and focus on the music, period. At its best--as in the knockout opening, scored to George Benson's strutting version of "On Broadway," which fuses music, dance, and dazzling camera work into a paean to Fosse's hoofer nation--All That Jazz offers a sequence of classic Fosse numbers, hard-edged, caustic, and joyously physical. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Absolute classic album from the mega-talented Breathe.......2006-12-02

As long as I live I'll never tire of this fantastic album. These guys knew how to write a song. The quality of the music here on every song is just out of this world, with a highly professional sound. These were serious musicians who unfortunately didn't become huge (although they should have).

But I admit that I'm a little biased, for the reason that "Hands To Heaven" is here, my favorite song of all time. And it literally took me about 10 years to discover which band performed it. I became obsessed with this song the very first time I heard it, but didn't know who performed it. I must have sung the words to at least 40 different people, yet none of them knew the song. And then finally, several years ago, someone at a record store knew it and pointed me to the album. I was fortunate enough to find it while it was still in print. Sadly it is out of print now, and it will cost you a pretty penny to get it. But it's worth every cent. I suggest also checking eBay-I've seen it pop up there from time to time. Also recommend is Breathe's other album, Peace Of Mind, which I think is also out of print. Not quite as strong as All That Jazz, but still definitely worthy of tracking down.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-05-20

I remember buying this on audio cassette as a kid, and I loved it. I recently came across the tape again and gave it another listen, and, as an adult, I have a newfound appreciation for it. The songs are smooth, easy to listen to, and catchy! Almost everyone remembers How Can I Fall and Hands To Heaven, but the album has much more to offer than that. All This I Should Have Known and Don't Tell Me Lies are two more incredible songs. The music sounds great, and the lyrics are excellent. Definitely worth listening to, and buying!! (Also great music for wining and dining!)

4 out of 5 stars They are an unforgettable band. .......2006-04-18

When I was a student, I listened their album and felt so good.
They are very special band.

5 out of 5 stars Back Together Someday ...........2006-01-22

I give this album 5 stars just for "Hands To Heaven" alone since I play it every night while thinking about my boyfriend who is far away in the Middle East right now. I play that song to bring hope that I'll see him again. Some of my other favorites are not only "How Can I Fall?" but also "Won't You Come Back", "Monday Morning Blues","All This I Should Have Known" - heck virtually the entire album!

On another note, I have a lot of my friends who did not grow up here when they were younger, so I always have to play what they missed during the 80s (I'm grew up here in the US). While they are familiar with Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince, Breathe is not well known in my social circles. However, I only need to play the 2 most popular songs "Hands To Heaven" and "How Can I Fall" to for them to fall in love with the group. You can tell when songs are timeless when a person who has never heard them instantly become fans nearly 20 years after they are released!

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable hits from the 80's!!!!!.......2005-10-16

I was 9 years old when this c.d. came out and obviously didn't remember a lot being I was a kid. But when I turned 15, the memories kicked in! HANDS TO HEAVEN is no doubt a true classic!!! I remember when they would play this on the radio station, I would sit on my desk in my room, open up the blinds, stare at the beautiful sunset, and would think about the girl I was in love with. It might sound weird but it just gave me courage to get up and take a chance with her. Well, it's been 12 long years, I've been in the military, and the rest is history..... However, HANDS TO HEAVEN just has the words and music to relax and basically put anybody in cloud nine mode. Thank you Breathe for the great music/memories and may GOD richly bless you all. (...)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-18

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

4 out of 5 stars Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix.......2007-02-24

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars "Bye, bye love"...........2007-02-09

Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

4 out of 5 stars ISN'T IT STUNNING HOW MUCH MEL TORME AND MICHAEL BUBLE SOUND ALIKE?.......2007-05-08

... and although Buble constantly refers to Sinatra and Bobby Darin as his musical heroes, I'll bet there's a lot of Mel Torme records tucked away in his collection that he's not admitting to - there's just no denying the similarity between the two singers.

5 out of 5 stars He doesn't Rock!.......2006-08-01

Here are the wonderful love songs from previous years sung in a voice so mellow and smooth that the harsh world disappears. The recording is solid, and the voice is true. This is classy music revived for a world confronted with noise. It is truly a stop-and-feel-the-romance recording to be shared with one you love.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful...it takes me back!.......2006-07-29

I love the song "That's All" and that was the main reason I purchased the CD. As it turned out I love the whole album...

5 out of 5 stars mystical !.......2006-06-26

If this doesn't put you in the mood for love, nothing will. Pure gold to help create that special feeling with that special person.

5 out of 5 stars MEL TORME - GREAT VOICE - GREAT SONGS - THAT'S ALL !!.......2005-09-19

Mel Torme...WHAT A VOICE ! All the other reviews say exactly what I would say. This album is overflowing with the kind of music that plays well where ever it's shared...it is "adult" romantic music, meant to be played over and over again between lovers and lovers of music. NO ONE could hold a note or a candle to Mel Torme. This CD has some of his VERY BEST on it. A HUGE BIG FIVE STAR RECOMMENDATION !! While his body of work is vast, (there are many other CDs out there) this particular CD is a GREAT compilation of his best.

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Talented young group of musicians.......2006-12-27

I took a chance on this CD after seeing the trumpet player Troy Andrews on television (studio 60) and wanting to hear more...I was not disappointed.

In places on this enjoyable CD the youth of this group shows - in some ways this makes for a raw, fresh sound. In others it simply reminds you that these young men have years ahead of them to hone their craft. In places the CD really takes off though, most notably on the third track, "get down", a hard driving tuba-bass heavy funkified jam that will have you dancing around in your living room in your boxers, hoping the neighbors aren't looking in your windows. This track was worth the price of admission alone.

I love the blend of styles, though it doesn't work as well for some of the tracks as others. Still, there's plenty of good music on this CD, and I'm glad to have supported these players with my purchase. I almost with the entire CD was funk, as that is what these guys seem to do best. Echoes of Tower of Power shine through in places - they all seem to play more confident on the funk tracks.

I gave it 4 stars, but 3.5 seems a bit more appropriate. No insult to the group at all - the music is excellent, but production quality is not entirely consistent, and in places it comes off as a bit raw. Where it works though, it really works - track 7 is a terrific funky horn-based jam and they're really in the pocket throughout. Likewise with the aforementioned "get down" (track 3), and track 8 is another bright spot on the CD.

I look forward to hearing what these guys do with their bright musical futures. If you're a fan of upbeat funky music with a tight horn section and subtle hammond organ throughout you will probably enjoy this CD.

Many American theatergoers discovered Germany's Ute Lemper when she took on the part of Chicago's Velma Kelly on Broadway. Except that Lemper already was well known as an actress and singer in Europe, where she got noticed with her performance of Kurt Weill and Weimar cabaret songs. (I even remember seeing her as Sally Bowles in a 1986 Paris production of Cabaret, whose "Don't Tell Mama" is included here). To say Lemper is a mannered interpreter would be an understatement. On the Weill songs, she makes Lotte Lenya sound downright minimalist. In addition to Weill, this CD includes a fairly comprehensive selection of the range of Lemper's repertoire, from tunes popularized by Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf to an excerpt from the Michael Nyman Songbook album. (No trace of the singer's downright strange take on "The Ladies Who Lunch," though.) The embodiment of the European tradition of art-song interpretation, Lemper may be a bit of an acquired taste, but her fans are certainly as passionate as her detractors. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Kooky and Sexy.......2006-02-17

Ute is an amazing interpreter with an incredibly versatile voice. This collection showcases these attributes and is a great starter for those who are fairly unfamiliar with Kurt Weill, Berlin cabaret, Piaf/Dietrich, or all of the above.

    3 out of 5 stars First-rate interpreter.......2003-01-08

Ute Lemper's vocal timbre is not my cup of tea especially, but her interpretive skills are extraordinary. Of the old world, where skill, independence, inspiriation and passion count for more than commerciality and ultimately, plasticity. Check out her work on Kurt Weill and Berlin Cabaret.

    5 out of 5 stars very catchy!!!.......2002-12-19

okay...i heard her for the first time on the movie"Kissing jessica stein" when she sang "your special girlfriend" and i was like wow...this girl has talent...very very catchy tunes...i am not even into all that much jazz and i couldn't help but like her music...if you don't mind some contraversial lyrics(which i believe to make her that much better...shows she doesn't care) then you will like this....

5 out of 5 stars Want To Buy Some Illusions?.......2001-10-17

I had initially been made aware of Ute Lemper's incredible talent by her cd featuring the music of composer Kurt Weill. While the work was impressive I didn't exactly run out to make any quick puchases of that disc. A nice enough cd but perhaps too Germanic for my tastes. Who knows!? Well, once again another drastic over-sight on my part! Fortunately with her cd of songs by Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich "Illusions" I was simply awed by the honesty and the sheer power of her ability to project a self-confidence that I found almost inspiring....to say nothing of slightly erotic! Add to that her simply peerless performance and I became an instant fan! So with the release of "All That Jazz: The Best Of Ute Lemper" I was, for once ahead of the curve...so to speak.

That being said..." All That Jazz" is a marvelous introduction to one of the real, truly great cabaret singers of our time. Singing fluently in English, German and French she effortlessly touches upon so many different styles, giving each the consideration and respect they deserve. The music is at once campy, fun, daring and most of all just a little "naughty". Which, I suspect, is what good cabaret singing should be. And make no mistake...these are truly difficult songs to attempt. A good assortment are 'signature' songs by some of the world's greatest singers i.e. Lotte Lenya, Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich and performing them takes a woman of considerable character and, how to say, chutzpah! But obviously she more than holds her own and perhaps manages just a liitle more than that! Personal highlights are "Careless Love", "Don't Tell Mama" and "La Vie en Rose". Plus, a wonderful version of "The Special Girlfriend" a song that really brings home how 'diverse' Ute truly is. Simply put this artist lays herself bare with every selection and, other than Holly Cole, I know of no other singer who takes the risks that Ute Lemper does!

All in all a wonderful cd for putting on in the evening with a glass of wine and one or two mischevious thoughts. So enjoy and think of me when you're nearing the end of that glorious bottle of wine. Who needs illusions....we all do!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Ute Lemper.......2001-06-05

Whether this you will find this to be "The Best of Ute Lemper" will depend on your taste. What is not debatable is that this is an excellent CD. It contains a sprinkling from much of Ute's repertoire, even including a Paul Celan song from the brilliant but too seldom heard Michael Nyman Songbook. Ute fans will already own a lot of this stuff but you can't have too much of a good thing can you?
