Editorial Reviews

This prequel to director Ronald Maxwell's 1993 epic Gettysburg is no less sweeping in its scope, covering the early years of the American Civil War from Manassas to Fredericksburg. But while its musical score (a collaboration between vets John Frizzell and Randy Edelman) offers up a comparable range of music styles, it's a soundtrack that crucially revolves around emotional concerns of a more intimate, human scale. Its folk-rooted historical connections are given voice by Mary Fahl's Celtic-tinged "Going Home" and Bob Dylan's brooding "Cross the Green Mountain," while a sweeping, yet infinitely melancholy orchestral main title suggests the true, tragic costs of the conflict. Spare, haunting tracks like "Loved I Not Honor More," "My Home Is Virginia," and "The Soldiers Return" predominate to an unusual degree in a war epic, pastoral suggestions of tranquility defiled. Conversely, the battle cue "VMI Will Be Heard from Today" seems to pulse with a dark, medieval energy that's anything but heroic. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!.......2007-05-06

Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple.

Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain all of Debussy's catalog, it does certainly contain some of his best work. There is actually only one track on this CD that I don't care for; that would be Golligwogg's Cake-Walk; it is just a bit annoying to me.

Beyond my dislike for that one track, the entire CD is a beautifully aranged, beautifully played, well recorded compilation with good sound mixing and it is a respectful tribute to a truly great composer.

"Claire de Lune" (Moonlighting) is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever composed; this is the orchestrated version, which I prefer, but the piano version is nice. "Arabesque No. 1" is superb. "Fetes" is both haunting and airy. "Reverie" is the best piano piece I have ever heard. "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is also a wonderful piano piece. "The Sunken Cathedral" is dark and mysterious, a true wonder.

The rest of the album is fantastic. Listed above are just my personal favorites from the disc. I listen to this CD at least once a week, but often more. It is perfect for relaxation, for listening while reading, or for my personal favorite use, to block out noise while I am writing.

I would recommend this to any classical lover.

If you have not heard Debussy's music, you must get this CD; it will have you ordering more of his compositions almost immediately.

The man was a genius.

5 out of 5 stars This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy. .......2006-07-08

After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!.......2005-09-12

I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.

SOME GOOD TRACKS ARE:
TRACK 1 IS THE BEST. THE OPENING FLUTE ON THE TRACK IS TOTALLY CHILLED AND COOL, REMINDS ME A BIT OF TRACK 13 ON ILL COMMUNICATION BY THE BEASTIE BOYS...A COINCIDENCE???

THE ONLY WEAK TRACK ON THE ALBUM IS TRACK 6, THE UNFORTUNATELY TITLED "CHILDRENS CORNER SUITE: GOLLIWOGGS CAKE WALK" THE MUSIC IS JUST DATED MAN, JUST AS DATED AS THE TITLE.

OVERALL THOUGH THIS IS A QUALITY ALBUM, WITH CHILLS, SPILLS AND THRILLS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH A FINE EFFORT.

5 out of 5 stars Debussy is the best. Ever........2004-07-23

I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold.

5 out of 5 stars i am dumb.......2004-07-01

And I'm a doomass because I didn't proof-read my other review and I wrote that Clair de Lune was performed by piano on this disc, which it isn't. Anyway, the piano version is better.

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10

This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.

4 out of 5 stars Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05

Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."

Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.

Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.

As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20

This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15

Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.

But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

Album Description

Manowar is a band that has set standards, broken records and won great accolades during its storied career. Known to their worldwide supporters as the "Kings Of Metal", the band has constantly redefined heavy metal by combining peerless musicianship and song writing with their undeniable commitment to true metal and their devoted fans. The band has always made the solemn pledge to create original music that is louder than hell and stronger than steel. The long standing lineup of vocalist Eric Adams, guitarist Karl Logan, drummer Scott Columbus and bassist Joey DeMaio is truly a force to be reckoned with in the studio and on stage. In addition they are the originators of the musical styles known as power metal and true metal.

As Manowar now prepares to unveil their tenth studio album, expectations from fans are higher than ever and Manowar are sure to exceed those expectations. The new album Gods Of War is Manowar's first entry in a cycle of concept albums; each a tribute to a different war god. Gods Of War brings out the greatest of Manowar's musical attributes by utilizing both epic song structures and dramatic narratives. Much like Ragnarok - the final battle at the end of the world - when listening to Manowar's epic saga, the earth will shake, the walls will crumble and only true fans of metal will remain standing, heads held high, with the triumphant glimmer of a battle well-fought in their eyes.

Gods Of War features brand new cover artwork by the world's leading fantasy artist Ken Kelly, as well as a scorching mix done by the unparalleled Ronald Prent.

Besides the normal Jewel Case version, Gods Of War will also be released as a limited edition in an embossed metal slipcase containing a high grade mediabook bound in leather.Furthermore, this limited edition will feature a bonus DVD with unreleased material about the making of this album and some special behind-the-scenes footage. A double-vinyl LP in a gatefold sleeve will also be available.

In their career Manowar has released 9 studio albums, two live albums and 5 DVDs with sales of over nine million records worldwide, as well as silver and gold records and numerous other industry awards. The last studio album Warriors Of The World was a critically-acclaimed worldwide chart topper, reaching gold status in Germany.

1 out of 5 stars Horrrr..Horrrr..HII! Pardon!!.......2007-07-12

I am a Manowar fan for more than a decade and this is the worst album to date. Like a Sleep medicine.

The songs are nothing new. They are sleeping, because they sound exactly like the other (last 2-3) albums. Enough!

When the start doing some good music?

This album is a shame !

3 out of 5 stars Kings of Metal?.......2007-06-22

Pretty much most of the reviews here say what I was going to say...So I will save it. But I will say...King Diamond. Concept Artist..Great Albums every one(except The Eye), he doesn't need or have 9 minutes of classical nonsense. Classical is good, I like it...But not when I want to hear METAL!! The actual METAL songs on this CD (few) are good, except for that last cheesy Bonus Track...CORNEY!!. I've been a fan for a while, but ever since Louder than Hell they got less a less metal...So Less filler.......MORE METAL!!!

4 out of 5 stars An Epic opus that has fans torn - I like it! .......2007-06-17

Metal has had some great concept records in its nearly 40 years existence. Seventh Son of Seventh Son, Nightfall in Middle Earth, Operation Mindcrime, Helstar's Nosferatu, Savatage's Streets, most King Diamond etc.

However when the gods (er kings) of metal decide to do the same thing, people run the other way.

Why I must ask?

In their 25 years as a band, Manowar have never been adverse to taking risks, its just that they kept these risks under a relatively stable umbrella in hopes of not alienating their fanbase. Symphonies, choirs, instrumental solos, all these elements have been featured on previous records to much aplomb.

With Manowar's 2002 opus, Warriors of the World, the band changed their sound a bit. It wasn't a far cry from their early work, MIXED with the elements of Kings of Metal. The "triplet gallop" rhythm was brought back (think Hail to England the song), the choir vocals brought back, and even a lower guitar tuning were brought in to make a more "epic" focus.

I loved Warriors of the World, in fact, with its more complex (than anything since before fighting the world) melodies and even the Elvis cover (!) I thought it was their best since Sign of the Hammer.

Now that Manowar has been very influenced by Rhapsody (though a little simpler and less ponderous), they come out with an album that leaves their modern fanbase scratching their heads. Its with this I say that it took me awhile to have Gods of War grow on me, and when it did, it grew like a fungus. The acapella parts, the symphonic parts, are just much catchier than Rhapsody (now called Rhapsody of Fire) in my eyes. They're a lot more refined and simple, and this might have something to do with it. Also, there is plenty of METAL to be found in this record, from the title track to the very cheesy "Die For Metal" bonus track (which btw, is not very musically similar to Kashmir, despite the similar rhythm. Musically on guitar its closer to the Clarivoyant by Maiden, other than the rhythm itself).

I don't think the narration is at all engaging however, and the sequel to "A Warrior's Prayer" definitely leaves me cold, as well as the usual "touching" Manowar ballad. I probably prefer Warriors, but I still love Gods of War. I think as a whole they succeeded, though I think songwriting wise its a small step down from Warriors of the World.

"Swords in the Wind" from that album is probably in my top ten Manowar songs of all time.

All I say is, give it a chance!

Triumph Of Steel seems way more ponderous than this in ways, and also way oversimplified.

I wouldn't say it belongs in the top tier of metal concept albums, but I think people have to view it as a concept record or "rock opera" to enjoy it more.

My top five Manowar (not neccesarily in order):

Into Glory Ride

Sign of the Hammer

Kings of Metal

Warriors of the World

Gods of War.

3 out of 5 stars Good album when there is actual music played.......2007-06-13

Best songs are Gods of War and Die for Metal. These are real Manowar tunes. The other "songs" are good clean Manowar, but there is way too much dialogue on this one.
The dialouge would have been better if there was more music written to it. Then you wouldn't be skipping to the next song trying to find the "music". The boys need to spend more time on just doing straight songs. Think about what Into Glory Ride would sound like with the production quality of Gods or War?

4 out of 5 stars Hey:.......2007-06-13

Whatever happened to the swords, I thought these guys were supposed to be representatives of Norse Gods? The very first album cover had swords on it but I've never seen them bring them out onstage.

But I don't mean to be critical!!!!

From his pivotal role in Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen--retrospectively recognized as a seminal alt-country band--through his solo career and sideman stints with the likes of Nick Lowe, guitarist Bill Kirchen has primarily been recognized as a master of the high-octane Telecaster. This release serves as a change of pace, as Kirchen puts the hot licks on the back burner while showcasing his songwriting chops and range as a vocal interpreter. After the hard-twanging title track provides a hymn to Kirchen's instrument of choice, he turns soulful and spiritual with "Rocks into Sand," shows a populist's social conscience on "Working Man," delivers a version of "Devil with the Blue Dress" that is closer to Shorty Long's R&B original than to Mitch Ryder's rock revival, and ends with a steel-guitar-laced transformation of soul legend Arthur Alexander's "If It's Really Got to Be This Way." The arrangements tend toward stripped-down intimacy, with former bandmates Lowe and Geraint Watkins and labelmates the Hacienda Brothers among those providing support. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Bill Kirchen has become widely known for the trademark big-rig guitar riffs that powered the Commander Cody hit "Hot Rod Lincoln" into the Top 10 in 1972. Since 1993, he has recorded seven critically acclaimed albums of his own that have made him one of the musical elder statesmen of today's Americana music, which in truth was pioneered by acts like Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen back in the `70s.

For his new album, Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods on Proper Records, Kirchen puts the accent on songwriting, a talent that is sometimes overshadowed by his dazzling instrumental virtuosity. "I felt it was time to write some songs that cut closer to the bone," he says. And on such moving numbers as "Rocks Into Sand" and "One More Day," he succeeds admirably. All told, Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods is the culmination of one very rich American musical life.

On Hammer, the man known as "The King of Dieselbilly" and "A Titan of the Telecaster" visits most every sonic landmark along the proverbial Route 66 of American music that he's traveled for decades now as a player, songwriter and singer, and serves up a blue-plate special of such tasty and nourishing stylistic flavors as rock `n' roll, honky-tonk, soul, rockabilly, Western swing, country, blues, boogie-woogie and more. The set captures the essence of Kirchen as "a devastating culmination of the elegant and funky," as he's described by his longtime friend and compatriot Nick Lowe, one of the noted musicians who plays on Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods.

All it takes is a spin of Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods or a night with Bill Kirchen as he tears the roof off any place he appears to agree with what the Austin American-Statesman says: "Bill Kirchen rules. It's just that simple."

5 out of 5 stars Give this album a Grammy - And Buy it NOW........2007-05-20

I've known of Bill Kirchen's music for nearly thirty five years - and this album tops all previous albums combined. The music is just plain awesome. The production qualities are superb. The lyrics are up to date - with a bit of politico thrown in. IF you love rock, country, country-rock, americana, and great guitars and lyrics give this album a spin.

5 out of 5 stars Master of the Telecaster.......2007-04-06

I've been a Bill Kirchen fan since Commander Cody and his Airmen first waxed their good-time, country/rockabilly vision. He's been churning out telecaster madness since then and made a number of great solo albums and superb guest appearances, many behind one of Pop's best songwriters, Nick Lowe. Kirchen has finally decided to enlist Lowe and his band of outstanding musicians to help put together his latest album: Hammer of the Honky Tonk Gods. The result is Bill's finest album by far. There's much less telecaster twang than usual but the songs are ones of real substance. His voice (rather than his Tele) is front and centre and the album is better for it. The band of Lowe (bass), Geraint Watkins (keys), Austin Delone (keys) and Robert Trehern (drums) are augmented by steel, fiddle and a bevy of backing vocalists. Together they give a subtle but superb performance on each and every song; much in the manner of Lowe's own album Gig My Mood. Superb musicianship, superb originals and a few lovely covers, excellent production values and attention to detail make this Bill's finest album; one that actually may break him into the mainstream of the "roots/Americana" scene.

Those who love Bill's Telecaster ripping through a brace of dieselbilly and rockabilly tunes may be disappointed with this album. There's still plenty of great guitar work here but the emphasis is more on presenting well-crafted songs that will stand the test of time. If you are lover of fine roots music then this album will be gracing your "turntable" for a long, long time.

Well done, Proper Records (responsible for those fine, value-for-money box-sets of older roots music) for giving Bill Kirchen the chance to realise his vision and for fans to truly appreciate one of music's lasting gems.

4 out of 5 stars Less Honky Tonk & Dieselbilly -but still Bill !.......2007-03-28

Being a big Kirchen fan from way back, I had to have this... Sadly, for me, it's got a little more of a pop/lounge/R&B feel than the trucker twang and country stuff I love most. Still, there's good material, Bill's great voice, and his guitar mastery. You won't be disappointed...
It's just ironic that the CD actually referencing "Honky Tonk" and featuring pix of Bill's axe, seems less full of honk and tonk and less of of a guitar chop show case...

5 out of 5 stars Honky Tonk is not lost as long as Bill Kirchen is around........2007-03-28

I love Bill Kirchen. He is the coolest telecaster player around. If you like real Honky Tonk music, western swing, a little rockabilly, some truck driving songs and just some great guitar pickin' then this and all his albums are a must. Bill was with Commander Cody for several years and wrote a great country song titled, "I ain't never had too much fun", this particular cut is on his Live album which has the most outrageous version of Hot Rod Lincoln you will ever hear. This newest album is just more of the same great music. The title song "Hammer of the Honky Tonk Gods" is a tribute to the Fender Telecaster with some clever lyrics and hot picking. The second cut "Rocks into Sand" reminds one of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, "Get a Little Goner" is classic country about wanting your woman to just leave and leave you alone. "Skid Row in My Mind" is a slow country tune reminiscent of vintage Willie Nelson. "Working Man" is a swampy, twangy mid temp rocker. "Soul Cruisin'" is a soulful look at life and love. "Devil With A Blue Dress On' is a slow shuffle reworking of the old Mitch Ryder tune, this is one cool tune. "One More Day" is pure Western Swing and would have been right at home on an old Bob Wills album. "Heart Of Gold" is a honky tonk rocker in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis, I would love to hear the Killer tear this one up himself. "If It's Really Got To Be This Way" is Bill's version of an old Arthur Alexander tune about love gone wrong and not being able to let go. Give Bill a try, I'm sure he could use the money.

5 out of 5 stars Reflective .......2007-03-10

Except for this disc's title song, Bill shows off his voice more than his wizardry on the Telecaster on this CD and the songs are more reflective and moody than hard rockin'. His voice here has the admirable rough resonance of Willy Nelson's. I've been a Bill Kirchen fan for over twenty years, and although Hot Rod Lincoln may always be Bill's signature and showiest piece, the songs on this disc resonate more with my current stage of life as I'm sure they will with most of his contemporaries.

This album is so frickin old, kiss your career goodbye in the next 3 definately 4 years.

3 out of 5 stars Dont read reviews by Justin Paxton.......2006-11-29

I couldnt hold my tongue any longer...any reviewer who thinks Metallicas Master of Puppets sucks and gives The Geto Boys a rave review has no frigging business anywhere near metal. This bonehead hates Bob Dylan, I guess he never took the time to read any of the lyrics to some of the old gems. Im sorry but dude just stick to reviewing rap albums and save us the negative bull****!

5 out of 5 stars One of my alltime favorite albums.......2006-08-23

Basically this is one of those albums that even though is different from the traditional metal and punk style it still come out great. This album is basically a throwback, to the beginning stages of metal in the 70's, and some thrash elements from the 80's, along with some blues and some some satanic songs and you got top notch album. Glenn Danzig has a crooners voice which sounds melodic but the raspiness of his voice gives a scarier edge at times that could give a haunting voice at times.John Christ's guitarring is great from crushing, melodic riffs and great solos, almost Iommi-esque style. Chuck Biscuits drumming actually has grown on me, here he nessesarily overuses the double bass drum but he still came up with great drumming patterns. EErie Hun, bass is audible, and sometimes adds jazzy style bass licks at times.

Many songs here are dark, gothic like and satanic at points, the slow tempo of some songs are haunting and then kick up steam. Some almost feel like a thrash assault. Basically this album is hard to find one bad song, because I enjoyed the whole album, but my picks on Danzig 3 are Left Hand Black(fav track) Dirty Black Summer, Anything, Bodies, How the Gods Kill, Do you wear the Mark, Godless and Heart of the Devil. Pick this album up, ypu wont be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars the best danzig album.......2006-06-02

when it comes to glenn danzig, i prefer samhain the most, but this album really pulls the whole "danzig" band further along in my opinion. for danzig newcomers i would recommend this one either first or second. (lucifuge is more of a rocker album) i would say that early danzig(the only good in my opinion) is like the doors, mixed with the early 90's suicidal tendencies, and slowed down to a ultra gothic pace.

still, newcomers to danzig are usually misfits fans, so i would recommend samhain first and danzig last only because you can see his prgression. i say this though. stay away from danzig 5-7......they are almost rob zombie-ish! luckily we have circle of snakes and glenn's reunion with doyle to redeem those stinkers.

by the way, to the reviewer below me. copy and paste a punch in the schnoz!...errm..sorry mr. danzig!..the misfits are a dinosaur band now and who really would want the past repeated?
anyways, get this cd if you are into anything from old punk rock to even johnny cash! yes, danzig is that diverse..well early danzig at least.

1 out of 5 stars COPY AND PASTE THIS REVIEW TO ALL DANZIG ALBUM REVIEWS.......2006-04-25

Glen Danzig USED to be somebody. He used to be a Misfit, but what the hell is he doing now? I mean...the fact that there is less than twenty reviews for this album (at this point) should speak for itself. NO ONE IS LISTENING TO THIS SH*T MUSIC! From what I've seen over the years the band Danzig appeals mostly to hicks! It's pure REDNECK METAL! What a laugable excuse for music!

I would much rather listen to the "New Misfits" than to ANYTHING Glen Danzig produces! Horrible, slow paced, uninspired, bland, and just plain moronic music! Listen to Glen Danzig in his prime, buy the Misfits coffin box set instead.

5 out of 5 stars A well-kept secret.......2007-05-18

Everyone wants to have a crack at the "bleeding chunks" eventually, and while I love the flashier Stoky and Furtwangler approach, I wouldn't want to be without the Boult. He's a great Wagnerian, strange as it may seem. Who could blame him for not wanting to go down in history merely as the finest Holstian? As long as this stays in print, Ormandy will still be considered the least sexy conductor. (I heard CBS researchers found an Ormandy fan once!)

5 out of 5 stars Essential Wagner.......2006-06-17

As a child, this set was my first experience of Wagner's music, and it made quite an impression on me. However, as I grew older and began to collect the full operas I felt I could surely do better than Adrian Boult and the British for a collection of the preludes, overtures, and orchestral music from the operas. I was wrong. I have yet to here any recordings that can match the power and intensity as demonstrated in these discs from Boult and the LSO (and LPO). The Meistersinger prelude alone is worth the price, and the only version of the prelude to Tristan which outdoes the one here is Bohm's live 1966 Tristan. The Solti, Karajan, and Klemperer highlight discs have their moments (and truthfully, I do prefer Solti and Karajan for the "Ring" highlights), but their contributions are greatest in the full operas, and overall, they simply can't muster the power and intensity that Boult brings to these preludes, overtures, etc.

Even if you have other compilations of Wagner's music in "bleeding chunks", I can assure you they don't come close to this one; and with two discs (the second containing mostly music from Parsifal and the "Ring") at 14 bucks, there is absolutely no excuse not to have this essential recording. So go ahead and buy this disc, never buy another Wagner compilation again, and with the money you save get started on the more important task at hand: the full operas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Wagner from a surprising source ... or maybe not!.......2004-09-27

Does Sir Adrian Boult conjure up of images of Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughn Williams, but not Wagner? You're not alone! Nevertheless, this is a double CD set not to be missed! Many years ago, I was listening to a classical radio music station in NYC that was playing the music of Wagner. The performance was so good, that I wouldn't leave the radio until I found out the name of the conductor. When the announcer said the conductor was Sir Adrian Boult, I was quite surprised. I had recordings of English music from Sir Adrian on Angel/EMI, but I never associated that conductor with Wagner. Having been blessed with a friend who had knowledge of classical music way beyond his years, I gave him a call to find out more about the recording. He told me that, Boult had solid expertise in the area of Germanic music, but, in England, had been overshadowed in that repertoire by Otto Klemperer. He told me not to be surprised about Boult's very fine Wagner, it was an excellent recording to purchase and, indeed, search out Sir Adrian's wonderful performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (now available on Vanguard). Fast-forward many years and I find myself browsing through Amazon for a recording of Wagner's Overtures and Preludes. Like everyone else I know, I foolishly jettisoned my LPs in the 1990s and have been "back-filling" ever since. Well, I was able to obtain this splendid set for less than $7 per CD! There are a total of 18 selections covering most of Wagner's operas including five excerpts from the Ring Cycle. The performances are excellent coming from no less than three British orchestras, and the sound is top-shelf EMI. Sir Adrian's pacing is measured and his vision is broad and sensitive, highlighting the beauty and grandeur --rather than just the fire-- of this glorious music. I heartily recommend this two-CD set, and at this price, I think it's a steal.

5 out of 5 stars Go For Boult.......2003-07-08

Sir Adrian Boult is best known for his recordings of the British repertoire, and his performances, particularly of Holst's "The Planets" and Elgar's Symphonies and Orchestral Works, are legendary. But Boult was also an excellent conductor of Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner, and this 2-CD set collects the Overtures and Preludes of the latter German titan. These stereo recordings from the early to mid-1970s with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, and London Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras are truly first rate. EMI's set compares nicely in terms of price, quality and musical offerings with competing sets by DG (Bohm, Kubelik, et al) and Sony (Ormandy & Szell). You might have reservations about getting German music conducted by a Brit, but you really can't go wrong with Boult.

4 out of 5 stars Memorable and dramatic- A must have for Wagner fans.......2000-03-20

I bought this cd for the following reasons: 1 I'm a Wagner fan, 2 the cover looks exquisite and 3 I wanted to hear a "prelude" since it sounds fancy and never heard one. The result is great cd. The Tannhauser overture, Tristan and Isolde prelude and Lohengrin Prelude to act 3 are all very excellent. Excerpts from the Ring of the Nibelunge aren't as good as I had anticipated but are still enjoyable. The music speaks the tales of Wagner's operas. Just hear it, as slow and irksome as they maybe, these preludes make you feel the tragic love of Tristan and Isolde, the epic odyssey of Lohengrin and the holy, heavenly spirit in Parsifal as he discovers the Holy Grail. Buy this CD and you won't regret it. Except that one bit from Gotterdammerung, Siegfried's Funeral March. It does'nt quite have the feel of grand disaster as it did in John Boorman's film Excalibur. If you're hoping to find that version(which is better) stick with the Classics Go To The Movies Vol 2 cd. But all the other pieces on this CD are excellent. Go and buy this CD- now !

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-05

Swati brings to us what is, effectively, a wonderful accompaniment to Tori Amos' American Doll Posse. Where Amos' album is mostly giddy and upbeat, trying not to be too serious where she has been deadly serious before, Swati's album is pensive and somber, often vulgar, and very mood-altering. Tori dwells on the surface, Swati swims in the depths. But enough about Tori.

Swati opens her album with "Small Gods", which is an intense opener with a deep, dark, murky feel. Her voice is buoyed by an atmospheric array of noises that sometimes makes you feel like she's in outer-space, sometimes in a small windowless room. Her lyrical style here, and throughout the album, is very blunt and unforgiving. She doesn't coat anything with sugar here, however she also very rarely throws lemon juice in an open cut either. Through all it's intensity, "Small Gods" and the majority of the songs on the album are easy listens. There is one track, however, that stands out and forces you to take listen. "I'm On Fire", originally by Bruce Springsteen, is imaginatively transformed here into a deeply depressing, minimalist ballad that very much belongs on Grey's Anatomy.

I really won't say which tracks are standouts, because they ALL are. This album is one of my best purchases this year. Definitely check out the artist that describes her music as "Heavy Acoustic". There is some real beauty here, and you wouldn't want to miss it, would you?

4 out of 5 stars A nice blend.......2007-05-16

I'm a big fan of soundtracks; especially the ones with dramatic music. Gods and Generals is one of the better soundtracks of the last few years. It has a nice blend of choral and instrumental arrangements with certain themes that flow through the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Beautiful, Musical Masterpiece for Everyone to Enjoy!.......2007-04-20

The overtures and songs on this album are just awesome and so easy to listen to. I often play this CD while I'm at my computer because it is so soothing but also has an air of peaceful triumph with such songs as Mary Fahl's "Going Home" which is lovely through and through! A touching masterpiece!

4 out of 5 stars No Gettysburg..........2007-02-11

I think the soundtrack for Gettysburg was much better. For one, it had more simpler, heroic themes and the song titles told you exactly what the song was and where it took place (such as "The First Battle" "Battle of Little Round Top" "General Lee's Solitude" "Over the Fence" etc, with a few mild deviations like "Fife and Gun") whereas with this soundtrack, all the songs are given vague names like "Go to their Graves like Beds" and "You Must Not Worry For Us" and "The First Crop of Corn"

Song titles aside, Gods and Generals has a much more grandiose, and overall very somber tone to it. The main theme and its two variations ("You'll Thank Me In the Morning" and "Loved I Not Honor More") are extravagant and so absolutely lush and grandiose to the ears that it brings tears to the eyes at its strong points.

Aside from these songs, and the main theme (which has an uncharacteristic Celtic sound to it) most of the other songs sound much like filler tracks without much purpose other than to add a background sound to it

All in all, the music isn't much better than Gettysburg, but the main theme is so powerful as to carry the album through. Perhaps with time you can grow to like much of the others, but they are not very powerful in themselves like "Gods and Generals" the main theme.

5 out of 5 stars Sweeping Emotional Spectacle.......2006-11-08

Gods and Generals, wow. To be honest, even as a history buff, I didn't like the movie all that much. However, the soundtrack, I feel, outshines the film tenfold. Filled with emotion and drama, many moments feel like a mix between James Horner's "Glory" and Hans Zimmer "The Last Samurai." However, many moments also remind me of Horner's "Legends of the Fall."

Overall, this is one of the best war soudntracks I've heard in a while, and a worthy purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Fine but not spectacular score, Gettysburg is better.......2005-05-12

The soundtrack to Gods& Generals begins with a moving song by Mary Fahl, and is followed by a fine score that does lack the power of Gettysburg. Don't get me wrong, this is a fine score. I enjoyed it and I rate it among the top 50 scores I own, but it like the movie is simply not as good as Gettysburg. The Irish pipes create the horror of Frederickburg, and next time I visit that battlefield, I will listen to this cd. But it lacks something. Plus I find the Dylan song a total distraction and totally unnecessary. That is because I don;t like Dylan and I think he is an awful singer. Yet I think that this song does detract. Overall, Gods and Generals is a fine score but simply not as good as Gettysburg.

1 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice - wasted.......2007-07-10

I was introduced to Mary Fahl via October Project. I had never heard anything like them before or since and Fahl's voice is nearly beyond compare with anyone else, though as an earlier reviewer said, Annie Lennox and Carly Simon come close. I just don't think they have Fahl's range.
So, you can imagine after October Project's demise, I was looking forward to hearing more of Fahl. After-all, a voice like that just can't be silenced.
Too bad it wasn't - at least for the garbage on this album. Redemption is probably the only song that shows what she can do with her voice. The rest is just a waste of her talents. God, I certainly hope she does not go down the same road that Karen Carpenter did and make everything she sings sound like a funneral dirge. She's trying very hard with the muck written for this album to do just that. The writing credits alone should have been enough to give it away right there. HOW many people does it take to write ONE song? Apparently as many as want to have a say in it for this disaster. Listen, if you start getting more than two people tossing in their two cents worth on any one song, you had better consider not writing it, much less trying to sing it. It is going to sound like a collage of miss-matched ideas and influences. Gee - just like most of the music (if you can call it that) on this album! I certainly hope that Mary Fahl will be able to find another record label willing to take her on when her current one dumps her for this waste of money and resources - with the priviso of course that all she does is sing the songs a talented songwriter creates for her.

2 out of 5 stars only 3 good song.......2007-01-11

still, october proyect is the best and her voice is the best, but this cd is not the greates but think about if you like her and then buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Perfect.......2007-01-09

The more I listen to this cd the more I am entranced with it. I have enjoyed Mary Fahl's voice since October Project. I am eagerly awaiting some more new material. She has a very powerful and touching voice. I gain something new each time I listen to her voice, music and lyrics. Thank you Mary!

4 out of 5 stars Emotional Voice.......2006-06-09

Since when the founder October Project came to an end, Mary's voice was already one one of the highlights of the band. And this is proved here. A very good debut album!

3 out of 5 stars Style departure.......2005-08-14

Like previous reviewers, I too was sceptical about this CD."The
Great Unknown" seems to be an October Project track right off, billowing, inspiring and lush, you would never know the difference. It is my favorite. The rest of the songs really take a departure in style from what I am used to hearing from Mary. Though enjoyable, she seems to be searching for an audience. I hope she continues to put out sounds which can inspire and provoke thought in their writing without getting too sentimental. Pretty girl, great voice, don't let them change your style.
