A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13
The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.
Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.
Still, some great stuff here.

Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals, Vol. 2.......2006-03-22
The purchase went as we had hoped. The delievry was as promised, and the quality of the product equal too, or above our expectations.
Not totally an instrumental.......2006-03-10
I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!
Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06
Well, ERIC records has done it again.
Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.
First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.
There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.
Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!
There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...
Its listening the way it used to be.

Conti's Score for Rocky II Continues to Inspire.......2007-01-06
Three years after the huge success of movie "Rocky", and the musical soundtrack that made it so distinctive, Composer Bill Conti again masterminds a magnificent score for Rocky II. And folks, this is another masterpiece. If you enjoyed the original score (and who doesn't), you will love this album as well.
As a sequel to the original, this soundtrack contains many of the same arrangements that marked the first film score. The tracks have been remixed, but are just as good, if not better than the originals. For example, Rocky II's "Gonna Fly Now" has a late 70's disco beat and features a chorus of children (who in the picture run with Rocky during his training run in the street and up the steps to the Philadelphia City Hall). The remix works well, has more energy than the original,
and is highly satisfying and inspiring.
There are two vocal songs on this album. Bill Conti's wife, Shelby, co-wrote the vocal ballad "All of My Life." The song is preformed by DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford, who also performed on the original Rocky in "You Take My Heart Away". "All of My Life" was not included in the picture, but is a solid romantic song that depicts Rocky and Adrian's deep love for one another.
The other vocal track, "Two Kinds of Love" is performed by Frank Stallone, (Sly's talented brother) who also wrote the song. He sings it with his street group around a trash can fire, as Rocky carries Adrian home on their wedding night.
Last, but certainly not least, Conti inspires the listener with a stirring and dramatic theme used in the title fight with Apollo Creed, "Conquest", and is perhaps the best dramatic track on the album. Finally, Conti presents the emotional and haunting, "Vigil", which plays as Rocky awaits for Adrian to awaken from her coma. It is filled with sorrow, extremely tender, and delicate in its composition.
While the album "only" has eight tracks, they are all wonderful and showcase the brilliance that is Bill Conti. It is a must-have, and deserves it own place alongside the original Rocky.

Still the winner..........2007-01-03
28 years ago?? I was around 10 years old when Rocky II came out! Whew..has it been that long? Regardess, I still remember clearly being at the theater - and being hyped up to see Rocky II. It was, if I am not mistaken, a feature review in my "Dy-no-Myte" magazine we used to get at school. (East Coasters may remember that mag).
I was fortunate to see the first "Rocky" on my best friends Top Loader VCR just prior...(that and Star Wars were my first 2 experiences with the now infamous bootleg copy!). But I was 10 - did I care?
Not only do I remember being as emotional as a 10 year old could be that Adrianne not only survived the childbirth, Rock had a kid, and of course being pumped during the workout and the fact he caught the chicken! (that "Kentucky Fried Idiot").
But what I also remember was getting the music from those key scenes stuck in my head as well...the music became just as important to me that year.
Of course the training music everyone knows, but I remembered the music during the final fight, the piano solo as Rock sits and waits out Addriane's coma, the 2 acapella songs the quartet is singing around the fire. It all stuck...and I remember getting the soundtrack to that (and Star Wars!) on that birthday that year and it was all on there.
As the hype machine started rolling months ago on Rocky Balboa was everywhere...something triggered me to find the soundtrack on cd. Went to a handful of stores and no luck..until I hit Amazon.
And I have to say it all holds up (except one track - which wasn't actaully in the movie). All the music triggers all the memories and it is amazing how after all this time it still sounds great.
The one track "All of My Life" with vocals - is a very dated, heavy synth sounding song, I assume attempt at a Top 40 single at the time. It sounds like a they wanted Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr to sing a duet - and they were both busy...so they found 2 session singers and recorded a demo....and never finished it. VERY - 80's sounding.
But the rest of the instrumentals hold up and still trigger some emotions from my past.
To me, still the best Rocky of the series, and still the best Soundtrack of the series as well.
If you are remotely sentimental about this movie - it will put a smile on your face.
A rousing encore, much like the film.......2007-01-01
The first Rocky film and its score were surprise successes in 1976, and it seemed natural that a sequel to both would emerge in due time. Fortunately, the sequel, Rocky II, and its' soundtrack, were just as successful as the first.
The formula for the sequel soundtrack is much the same as the original: the famous opening fanfare is present, as is "Gonna Fly Now" (though the mix used on the CD is different from the one used in the film). DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford appear, as does Frank Stallone. What sets this soundtrack apart are "Redemption", the film's driving theme, and "Conquest", the suspenseful fight theme that would fittingly become a staple of future Rocky scores. The Overture also features a lengthy section unused in the final cut of the film, which bridges the opening music to the end credits reprise of "Redemption", and is likely of note to fans of composer Bill Conti. Last, but certainly not least, is "Vigil", the moving track that plays while Adrian is in her coma.
All in all, the Rocky II Soundtrack is a fine supplement to the original, infamous soundtrack to the original film. While I would have hoped to have had the film's mix of "Gonna Fly Now" as a CD bonus (as the disc is just over 34 minutes in length), this is a minor nitpick on such an enjoyable album.
Back with Beautiful Music to Enjoy!.......2006-09-02
1979: Rocky was back in "Rocky II"! Audiences could be entertained once again by their favorite hero. So could music lovers, with this stunning soundtrack.
Only 8 tracks?!! That may be your first reaction, but don't you worry, almost every musical piece of the film is included on this soundtrack!
--->(WARNING! The explanations of the Tracks can contain SPOILERS of the Movie!!)
<---
1. Redemption - Yeah, Rocky is back! This song really captures that feeling. Being the main theme of Rocky II, Redemption is a completely new music track with hints in it that it is true music from a Rocky film. Rocky has just gone the distance and is transported to the hospital. The ambulances are riding through the dark city which is heard in the music, with another theme screaming: "Rocky is back!" through it. Length: (2:33)
2. Gonna Fly Now - Back is Rocky, so is the heartpumping Rocky theme! This time, a bit different from the original. More funky and even more seventies than the one the Rocky I soundtrack. Now, instead of adult voices, childeren are now singing the lyrics of the song, which gives a great power-up feeling. Length: (2:33)
3. Conquest - Rocky's back in the ring with Apollo for a rematch and gives absolutely everything he has got! The music shows this powerfully. A fantastic tence fight needs fantastic tence music must have Bill Conti thought, and he delivers that sort of music in a perfect way! When Rocky feels his strength leaving him, the music shows that feeling. When he's back fighting, the music lets you hear that! The music is just screaming: Go for it Rock!" Length: (4:36)
4. Vigil - Rocky's one and only true love Adrain has slipped into a coma. His world is upside down, his emotions are high up. His heart hurts and the music shows you that feeling. He doesn't wanna go on anymore. He is broken, defeated, without the love of his woman who he can't live without. The music guides your once again through Rocky's clouded soul with true emotion. Length: (6:29)
5. All My Life - A true seventies song which isn't in the movie. Sung by the same two people who sung "You take my Heart away" on the soundtrack of Rocky I (DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford) A fun song about once again a strong and important character in the Rocky films: Love. Length: (3:58)
6. Overtune - The longest track on the soundtrack starts with the music of the very beginning of the film. The title of the film floats over the screen from right to left and then flips over to the ending of round 14 of the boxingmatch in part I. The fantastic music of that moment is heard once again. After that the music goes over in another great, kind of, contest of trumpets which is not heard in the movie but has familiar sounds in it. Then it continues as a true seventies tune that also isn't heard in the movie. You can hear tunes of "Gonna Fy Now" and "Going the Distance" in it. A truely fasenating tune.
Then the music goes to the moment where the match has ended and Rocky has won! The music sweeps up and goes all the way to the fantastic moment where Rocky screams in the microphone: "Yo Adrian, I did it!" A true goosbump moment. Then the music fades out and the Main theme "Redemption" is heard once again (which was besides the beginning, also at the end credits in the movie). Length: (8:37)
7. Two kinds of Love - Again sung by Frank Stallone, Sylvester Stallone's brother. The song begins with true fifties humming and soundmaking. Then the man starts to sing with his Streetcornor band. A great song which is in the film at the scene after Rocky and Adrian are married and are walking over the street back home. Length: (2:36)
8. All of my Life - Instrumentical version of the song it says on the cd, but this is a different version of the Rocky love theme if you ask me. Great soft music which is heard in the film when Rocky and Adrian are telling each other that they will never leave each other, right after their wedding, in the appartment. Lenght: (2:27)
So again a fantastic Soundtrack by Bill Conti.
Rocky was back in 1979, and so was Bill Conti! Enjoy!
One Song Missing!! Someone Help!!.......2006-05-04
All 5 rocky films are brilliant, soundtrack is equally fantastic but in rocky 2 before he gets fired from his friends meat store, he's workin hard and a nice tune plays in the backround for a few minutes. Does anyone know the name of this tune? Also does anyone know what i'm talking about?

redux.......2007-07-06
Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!
Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20
I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.
This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.
POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20
The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Album Description
Beautifully packaged two CD compilation consisting of recordings from the last 20 years of Moondog's life, when he resided and recorded in Germany. Disc One consists of studio recordings from 1977-99 and features 'High On A Rocky Ledge', 'Do Your Thing', 'I'm This, I'm That', 'Heimdall Fanfare', 'Fujiyama 2 (Lovesong)' and more. Disc Two is his last live performance, recorded a month before his death, and is wonderfully recorded, sounding as well-produced as the studio tracks on the first disc. The packaging includes 44 pages of liner notes featuring essays, interviews, photographs and other information, all packaged in a hard cardboard sleeve, creating a virtual work of art.

Missed opportunity (but still essential).......2005-10-25
Why are there so many tracks on disc 1 that are readily available on the Sax Pax for a Sax CD? It's too bad more of the impossible to find recordings from this period couldn't have been included instead.
Otherwise, it is great to finally hear some of this material and the disc 2 live concert is a treasure. All things considered, a bargain and a must for Moondog devotees.
Also note the packaging is very attractive -- but unfortunately on my copy, the binding/glue is already falling apart so the CD trays have seperated from the cover... sometimes plastic is a better way to go...
Moondog's last concert!.......2005-10-12
This is a professional production of an official double disc set that was released in 2004 (5 years after Hardin's death.) It looks good and has 44 enclosed pages of valuable information about Moondog, such as a detailed biography, discography, Moondog's own words about the recordings, personnel listings, lyrics, pictures and a poem that Leonard Bernstein wrote to and about Moondog.
Also seeing quotes of Benny Goodman and Frank Zappa praising Moondog's music is particularly exhilarating for a Zappa fan like myself (I had no idea.)
The first disc consists of already released material, most of which I already owned when I bought this set. This disappointed me a bit, as I'd expected additional versions of these titles provided on the back.
The set is called "The German Years," but includes 5 tracks that are taken from "Sax Pax for a Sax" - an album that was recorded in England and performed by English musicians, and consists mainly of material that was written while Moondog lived in New York. Other albums that songs have been taken from are "H'art Songs" (4 tracks,) "In Europe" (4 tracks,) "Elpmas" (4 tracks,) "A New Sound of an Old Instrument" (3 tracks,) "Big Band" (1 track) and "Bracelli" (1 track.)
The 56 minute long disc #2 is the essential music in this set as it consists of only previously unreleased material. It is Moondog's last concert, which was recorded in France on August 1st, 1999 (less than 6 weeks prior to his passing.)
The concert, which consisted of both rare and recent material, was performed on solo piano by Dominique Ponty. At times Moondog joins in on bass drum, and here and there he recites a few couplets - a nice treat. But as always, when it comes to live recordings of solo piano performances, we have to deal with intruding sounds; aside from applause we get a few hundred coughs, a squeaking door that repeatedly opens and closes, at one point the barking of a distant dog, at one point the sirens of an ambulance driving by the recording location, and believe it or not - audience members trying to clap along to one of the solo piano canons! ...but overall the sound quality is very good and clear.
I'd recommend "The German Years 1977-1999" to Moondog fans (who haven't heard his last concert,) but to people who aren't familiar with his work, this might not be the optimal place to start.
Late Moondog.......2005-04-27
When Louis Hardin moved to Europe in 1974, he was received as visiting royalty -- unlike his home country who treated him as some sort of one-joke street-performer. For the next 25 years, until his passing in 1999, he produced an astonishing variety of music for organ, brass band, voice, piano, percussion, small chamber ensemble, and string quartet.
Disc one of this collection contains an anthology of his German recordings, and presents a clear advantage over the originals in that every track is on a different instrument. The listener never gets a chance to grow weary of any one style, allowing you instead to concentrate on the commonalities running through all of Hardin's music. As a sampler of the work done in his senior years (ages 61-83) it's a remarkable collection showing verve, inventiveness and playful iconoclasty.
Disc two presents his last concert, previously unreleased, from Arles France on August 1st 1999, just five weeks before his death. Pianist Dominique Ponty, who I believe is the daughter of famed violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, plays 34 of his pieces for piano or arranged for piano. Louis 'Moondog' Hardin himself accompanies her on tambour, a big skin drum, on several of the tunes, and recites six couplets in his rich ageless baritone.
Also included, a 44-page booklet of photos, notes, lyrics and critical comment. This is a first-class production for one of the last century's most enduring and original composers.

Tutti.......2000-05-06
Although a compilation of various pieces, this CD has the drama and sonic impact which will test the limits of your system. The orchestral presentations are first class. The sound stage presentations with the left to right width and the front to back depth give the listener an outstanding three dimensional impression of the actual orchestra instrument placement in the recording hall as well as the hall's ambient sound.
I have from time to time heard the expression 'sound windows' when discussing Speakers in an audio system. This CD will give you an excellent opportunity to check the clarity and precision of your system....in particular the bottom end capabilities of both the ampifier and the speakers.
I stronly recommend using this CD as a true Reference CD Rrecording when evaluating enhancements or upgrades to your system. Bring this CD to your dealer and listen carefully.
Get to know what your system is capable of and what it is not capable of delivering before and after listening tests for your new component.
Good Luck
WONDERFUL SAMPLER CD!.......2000-02-26
It does the trick. It literally samples the entire recent Reference Recordings catalogue, with varied excerpts from all kinds of music, a rare and exciting compilation wel worth the price. I reccommend it highly.
Tutti - Orchestral Sampler.......2000-02-02
This sampler is not your typical classical sampler. As seen from the track listing, it contains a diverse, but incongrous, selection of orchestral pieces, mixing Mozart, Vivaldi and Rimsky-Korsakov with more contemporary composers such as Bruckner, Arnold, and Paray. Although the list of selections is tempting and attractive to those who want to expand their musical knowledge, the combination just doesn't work. The jump from Mozart to Paray to Arnold to Vivaldi is unsettling to the ear, although it may be suited to a music education class. If, however, you seek less traditional (less soothing), less harmonic (more tempestuous), orchestral music, this may be the collection for you. The conducting and performances are very good. It certainly will never be background music for dinner!
