Revisiting "Our Special Place" .......2007-07-12
When listening to this, I am again brought to "our special place," written by a wife that can't be writing to me because she's already dead. And that's a good feeling, too, because it lets me know that I've found something to listen to that is not only effective on a videogame level but that is also enjoyable because of its atmospheric qualities. Its like triggering flashbacks of a life I luckily never had to live, and that life was one of the better experiences I've had the pleasure to play through.
Yeah, atmospheric qualities it has a `plenty.
While i wouldn't immediately suggest this to someone that hasn't played the game, i would recommend the soundtrack to anyone that played through SH2 and that found the music appealing. Some of the music is easy to ignore when you are standing on the edge of your seat, too, but if you think back to the moment I'm sure you remember how well everything jelled into the setting. Every piecemeal taste and every musical motion reminds me of something done, and every up-tempo push brings back thoughts that chill me just a little. I love that, and I actually love the solidity that the soundtrack really fosters. Even listening to it simply to listen to it does something for me - it makes me feel like I've once again found that special place.
Not for everyone but especially for those who enjoyed SH2 and SH4's soundtrack.
Engrossing...........2007-07-11
But some of the music is just too short. Just when you become engrossed in the feeling...it's over and onto the next track.
A lot of this music appears in the movie also, which is why I bought it. I also bought one of the games for my pc, but I am not a gamer and really didn't care for the game. But this cd, and the movie are amongst my prized possessions!
I recccomed it highly!
wonderful.......2007-05-30
James is teh uber hottness! And so is this CD, it rocks my sox! Seriously though, the music on this is amazing ^^
The Most Amazing CD I've Heard In A While.......2007-05-27
The amazing thing about Akira Yamaoka's music is that it actually has the ability to take you to Silent Hill. Anyone that has ever listened to Akira's music seperate from the games knows that. Don't even feel the slightest bit of trepidation at the price tag. I can assure you it's worth it. The first thing you should do when you get this CD is go into your room (preferably at night), Turn off your lights and let this beautiful CD bring you back to "That special place"; Silent Hill.
Now, moving on to the actual content.
The music on this CD ranges from dark piano ballads to strange (and insanely cool) ambience that sounds like rumbling machinery and metal pangs and creaks. Every once in a while you even get a bouncy rock/pop song (I hate describing it as "pop" but i cant think of anything else) but even those still have a very "Silent Hill" feel.
Now, this wasn't made for the casual fan but I suppose even they could find something enjoyable here. For you die-hard fans, though, I strongly recommend this CD.
A work of art, 'silent hill' style; deep, beautiful, and eerie.......2007-01-16
Anyone who has played the SH series know that this is the best soundtrack to date. In fact, all of the soundtracks are great, but this one and SH 4 are the best in my opinion. The orignial SH soundtrack is fantastic, but more ambiant and more for die hard fans. SH 3 has the weekest score in the series, and in my opinon, is very different than the rest. Many people say the SH 4 ( the game, not the score) is the weakest in the series, and I completely disagree. I thought sh4 was strong and 3 was the weakest, though it was still very good ( though I LOVE the whoe evil other world, culty side to SH, I thought it was better played up in 4 and 1; SH 2 is just amazing, though there isn't too much culty stuff)
All in all, this is my favorite game series, with the best soundtracks to date. Buy this soundtrack and 4, as they r the best!

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Customer Reviews:
The best score of the series, after SH 2, of course!.......2007-01-16
The tracks on SH 4 are superb, dark and mysterious like the others and with the same industrial undertone.
I believe that this score and SH 2 are the best in the series. The other 2 ( SH 1 and 3) are both great, but SH 1 is more noises and SH 3 doesn't have the same depth ( its a little too 'pop musicy').
I don't know the exact names of the two tracks I like the best on this score, but one is a dark lullabye and the other is featured in the game when the protagonist comes out of the hole and is confronted by his neighbor about how she can't go with him back to his room, and she didn't see him go through the hole, he just disappeared. The song is also featured in the behind the scenes in the Silent Hill movie dvd.
Get this score and SH 2, as they are both fantastic and a great addition to any silent hill fan's library.
Great.......2006-09-29
This is great soundtrack. 2nd in all the Silent Hill soundtracks behind the perfect Silent Hill 2 soundtrack. Room of Angel is an amazing song, I cant stop listening to it. Akira Yamaoka is a genius.
Absolutely stunning!.......2006-09-05
Akira Yamaoka is a musical genius. His use of sound and sense of emotion is incredible, very few artists show such mastery over their craft. His music is haunting and yet very delightful to listen to. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
An uplifting experience.......2006-12-05
If one takes into account the time at which this recording was made, and the surrounding events affecting his life, one can truly appreciate the significance of this album. Experiencing oppression not only from the U.S. but later the Canadian government to travel abroad, Robeson was impeded, but not prevented from singing in the name of peace, human rights, and the rights of the common worker. Victory was at hand when on May, 9 1958, the date of this recording, Paul Robeson announced that his passport battle had been won. This is the recording of a triumphant gentleman, a loving, ecstatic audience, and very importantly, a talented and very attuned pianist (Alan Booth). With this in mind one can more greatly appreciate how special this concert was. The magic of this recording trancends Robeson's impeccable singing. It is the concert as a whole that makes it so spectacular. Listen to 'Joe Hill', think of Robeson's battle, and hear why it is so powerful. Or listen to 'O No John', Alan Booth pounding the keys on the last notes, and the audience's response. Every person in Carnegie Hall was riveted. Well worth the price, and an uplifting experience.
One of the best, and latest, of the Robeson recordings..........2006-10-17
This concert came along in 1958, when Paul's passport was restored and he was allowed to travel and make a living again, after several years of being on the Communist blacklist. His joy at performing once more for his traditional audience comes through in every track. That same year, he did a concert at his brother's church in Harlem, and when Columbia Records issued that one, it had another winner. Not long after those shows, Paul went overseas for five years, suffering a health crisis that brought him back to America in 1963, broken down and unable to perform consistently. He spent his last decade or so of life on the sidelines, living quietly with his sister in Philadelphia. This concert, then, along with the one at Mother Zion Church, is one of the final triumphs of one of the most interesting American lives. We know now that Paul's stubborn support of the Soviet Union in the Stalin era was a tragic flaw in his character, but he had magnificent gifts of voice and of acting presence, and had he come to the attention of audiences in 1957 instead of 1927, he would likely have earned millions as a singer and actor, and his political and social radical activism would have been a much smaller impediment to his career. If you already own some Robeson recordings, add this one because it represents him at the beginning of what was then "old age." If you own none, this concluding album is actually a fine starting point, because his earlier work suffers a bit from the primitive recording technology of the '30's and '40's.
Paul Robeson Live.......2006-07-11
Of course his baritone is fabulous. His rendition of Joe Hill is unforgettable - this was a song he sang for the builders' labourers on the site of the Sydney Opera House in around 1969 -also Old Man River, which he made his own. He should have sung this in the film of the musical Showboat but he was passed over for an inferior voice by the producers because he was a member of the Communist Party. A pity. He also sings some gospel on this CD, I'm not mad about religious songs but if you like them then you'll love this.
New version available in UK.......2006-02-18
This version is now redundant as Vanguard has released a version in 2005 with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes. The sound is also better. I purchased it from amazon.co.uk.
Question.......2005-09-29
I would like to buy Paul Robeson CD with "Old Man River" and "Kevin Barry (Irish)"

Customer Reviews:
a fantastic score, very industrial and for hard core fans!.......2007-01-16
This is a great game score done by the master. I would reccommend it more to die hard fans ( I listen to it all the time!) But not so much to people who may have just seen the movie. It is very industrial, with all of the sounds that are featured in the game.
If u want more haunting music, I reccommend the scores from SH 2 and 4.
absolutely stunning!.......2006-11-13
i am one who loves music. the thing i like about it though, is that i get inspired to make movies out of it. whats really fun though, do with this soundtrack, is to walk around in the dark (in your house or outside) and listen to the music. its sooo creepy. heh. anyways. this is a must buy if you love the silent hill music.
A brilliant, untraditional composition by Akira Yamaoka.......2006-04-19
The "music" of Silent Hill is an often maligned aspect of the game that, in 1999, proved something terrifying could come from the PS1 gaming console that not only fed on a person's fear of the dark, but fear for the flesh. While Resident Evil did a good job bringing us zombie fun, Silent Hill was an altogether different kind of game.
I don't think any one aspect of the game really drove this point home with more gusto than the game's soundtrack, which was written and performed by the recent executive producer of the series, Akira Yamaoka.
Yamaoka has a knack for creating terror through sound, which plays a huge part in making Silent Hill so terrifying. Turn the game down sometime and see just how scary it is without his sound design. It really isn't very effective that way.
The music itself is a very strange beast all on its own. Not music per se, the mixture of ambiance with grinding metal and chanting voices (more so in later games than this one, though) is something not to be missed. There's a kind of energy to what he has produced, and despite the fact that it isn't exactly something you'd listen to everyday, one can't help but admit that he truly enjoys the odd sounds brought out in this compilation.
The Silent Hill theme is among one of the most eerie video game themes ever composed, and put up against "Theme of Laura" from Silent Hill 2, it is quite different and out-there.
The CD moves from track to track pretty much seamlessly, making it feel a bit like an emotional roller coaster. There's no pause for breath between each scene, and that's something I appreciate.
I did deduct the CD one star, and that's because some of the tracks are a bit short (particularly "Die" and "Not Tomorrow.") It would have been better to extend their length a bit, but that's only a slight niggle on my part. Another reason I deducted a star has to do with the lack of tracks on the CD. I've got an expanded cut made by a fan of the game which runs two CDs long. There's some really good stuff there that was left off the disc. As a result, the disc does get a bit boring from time to time.
For those of you like A. Griffiths "Adrian" who wants something a bit more melodic, I suggest the Silent Hill 3 and 4 soundtracks. There's a lot more in the way of actual music on both of those, and while the games did feature a lot of the metallic grinding that is found in Silent Hill, it was opted to leave a massive chunk of it off of the soundtrack CDs, unfortunately.
The soundtrack for Silent Hill is truly unique in that it isn't music, per se, but if you've got a morbid ear or just a curious mind, I suggest giving it a listen. (A warning, though: if you have a sensetive ear, you might want to avoid tracks like "My Heaven", which go a bit wild.)
Amazing, disturbing...ermmm...music?.......2006-04-11
I love the game of "Silent Hill". It scared me to death and is still better than all the sequels. The chance to get the soundtrack was too good to miss, and I soon found out that it was filled with the same kind of nightmarish atmosphere as the game.
So why only 2 stars? Because as I found out, this is not music that you can actually sit down and listen to. When the CD starts up you are treated to the dreamy and mysterious scratchy guitar-backed opening theme which is absolutely stunning. It's very reminiscent of David Lynch's soundtrack music, "Twin Peaks" in particular springs to mind. Little wonder it makes the game's CGI movie intro so effective, and why it was also featured in all the trailers and demo discs when the game first came out. But once I had finished enjoying this theme, the rest of the tracks on the CD soon had me reaching for the fast-forward button. Transplanting the disturbing ambient noises of the game onto an audio CD leaves you with something like aural wallpaper to a nightmare, with metallic scrapings, hollow clanging, distant rumblings and industrial grinding noises all featuring prominently. Now, this may add up to a pretty horrific atmosphere in the game, but music it ain't, and I don't think I have ever let the entire CD play through in one sitting without jumping through most of the middle section. There must be some situations that would call for for an ambient soundtrack like this, but I can't think of many, and that's why I have only given the CD two stars, as only a fraction of it is bearable under normal listening conditions. Don't get me wrong - I was not freaked out or scared by the sounds, just bored.
Stick around to the end, though and you get the more melodic closing themes and the vocal song "Esperandote", plus the bonus track of the music to the "out-takes" if you wait long enough. My biggest gripe - and something that spoiled the whole CD for me - is that the music for Lisa's death scene is not included!! This sorrowful guitar piece was played out at length in the game, but fades out after barely 30 seconds of intro on the CD to make way for yet another industrial noise track. Unforgiveable....what with the distinct lack of real music on the whole album anyway, and they decided to deprive listeners of the most beautiful track of the lot!
Let me just re-affirm: I love the game, I love the musical compostions featured in it. I even love the creepy CD packaging, and the mysterious sounding tracklisting just add to the appeal. (As an aside, I have the European CD release of this which features a picture of the doll-like Cheryl on the cover rather than Lisa, which is possibly even more disconcerting!)
But I don't like 75% of what's on this disc. Its exactly as heard in the game (apart from Lisa's Death - curses!!), so I can't say it's unfair. I just don't enjoy it.
Sensational game soundtrack, marred only by volume issues.......2006-02-21
It's not often that a console video game merits a soundtrack release; after all, many games behave like films, using pre-recorded popular music tracks and releasing a licensed handful on CD. Not so with the Silent Hill series, where the games are as much about the score as the gameplay itself. You couldn't plug in new or classic Top 40 hits, and realize the same gameplay experience. Akira Yamaoka has created something marvelous with these Silent Hill scores; here, we review the CD for Silent Hill's premier release (PSOne, 1999).
The sounds reach into the varied themes you'll find during the game: frenetic flights, lumbering foes, paralyzing fear. Much of the same goes for his subsequent releases, but the Silent Hill CD is the most severe, lightest in its use of pop influence. The only pure game scores that come close (in readily-available CDs, that is) are those from the Biohazard/Resident Evil series.
The only downside (big enough to strip a star from this review) is the problem of volume. Some tracks start out barely audible, regardless of your personal volume control, and gradually rise to ear-splitting levels (All and Moonchild, for example). Others are hi-volume from the get-go (Until Death). Most tracks have lighter sounds that will be missed at anything below a mid-range volume setting. For the first couple of listens, make note of those tunes where you need to crank the volume up to 11, down to 1, or jam the mute button suddenly, and you'll be OK. Fortunately, this is the only Silent Hill soundtrack with this problem.
Five stars for proficiency, minus one star for performance. Not available currently thru Amazon proper, you'll find copies in the Marketplace and on auction sites.

Heather teh rocks.......2007-07-12
This sound track is so nice and calming, some of the tracks are kind of odd. But the majority is amazing ^^
Wow!!!.......2005-12-28
This is an amazing soundtrack!
April 2003.
I excitedly drove to the mall to pick up a copy of Silent Hill 3. See My best friend was coming over, he lives a long way away from me and I don't get to see him much, and we are HUGE fans of Survival/Horror video games. Actually we love just plain getting scared silly until we get the "shakes"... literally. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true.
So anyway, I go into the "Game force" store... or as me and my best friend like to call it, "Game Farts"... hahahahaha!!!! So I walked in to pick up my copy of the game. I was very excited to get the game even though it had been out for like half a year already. The reason I didn't get it until then is cuz I didn't have a good enough excuse to pick it up until now.
When I got to my car, I opened the game to look at it, you know how it is when you get something new, you have to look at
it. I opened it up, and there inside was the game... and another cd. I was like, "huh?", that's when I noticed the little notice on the back of the game case.
"Soundtrack Included!"
...........................................what?????.............
I was freaking out! I was too scared to even listen to the cd!
So I started driving home. When I got to my street, which is pretty long... and dark... and scary... not to mention the fact that the forest out back of my house is haunted (my best friend and I saw two ghosts there), despite all those things, I stuck in the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack.
The first song, "Lost Carol", a song containing just one woman's voice singing a beautiful yet haunting theme. IT just lasted some 30 odd seconds, but it was enough to get me scared.
I know it sounds stupid, but I turned the headlights on my car off, you know, for effect. The next few songs played through, and I skipped to a random song (I was parked right outside the entrance to the woods behind my house), I think it was song 15, or 16, or one of those teen songs, but it contained a chorus of bass voices in a choir singing some satanic like song. I'm not sure I could call it "music", but it was enough to scare the living life out of me.
I ejected my cd, grabbed my game, and ran as fast as I could inside my house. I was pretty scared.
So that night when my best friend got to my house, we turned on the surround sound, turned on the TV, and started getting scared!
This is a great soundtrack. I love it, but my favorite Silent HIll soundtrack is still Silent Hill 2's.

One of the best game soundtracks since Halo.......2004-05-05
I have rarely played the Silent Hill games, but just listening to the soundtrack made me want to play them. It's so good I listened to it three times over the first day I was given it. Hopefully I'll be able to buy the full version, the one I have is the shorter one that came with the game. Fan of Silent Hill or not, this is an awesome soundtrack. It's creepy and sometimes even melancholy.
First Soundtrack of SIlent Hill ever listened to. Loved it!!.......2004-04-21
Although, there may be better soundtracks out there, I think that Akira Yamaoka is awesome at what he makes. His music is so thinkable, you could put his songs into every situation, besides the Silent Hill games. The soundtrack includes most of the songs from the Silent Hill 3 game also with a remix of the song "I Want Love" (which is like three times longer than the original song, which is better!) with a few songs containing vocals but most are instrumental. If you're a fan of the Silent Hill series for quite some time, I recommend this. People who are not familiar to the games won't be like me (I listen to the whole soundtrack each day) because after I recognized the songs in the game to the soundtrack, I started to like them more.
Time to go buy the Silent Hill 2 Soundtrack. I hear it's greater than this one, but I'll see for myself.

A Purcell Sampler, or a Greatest Hits disk, if you prefer........2006-02-05
This is a compilation disk of Greatest Hits, as it were, of Henry Purcell recorded by various artists from 1953 (the Alfred Deller track) through the 1970s through 1994. The point of the disk was part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the much to early death of this great composer and one of the great geniuses of music that England or Britain has ever produced. I have always been a devotee of his music and absolutely adore the way he set English. It is absolutely unique to him and so full of wonderful effects that create a greater whole than the music or words alone.
1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.
There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.
That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).

I wish I was Swedish.......2006-06-10
This is simply my favorite disc of song out there. As a recreational singer, it's wonderful to come across a disc like this and be given an entire new world of song that you can't even find music for. The songs by Sigurd von Koch, who spent some time in Asia, are beautiful enough to dissolve your brain! In The Month Of Tjaitra and Of Lotus Scent And Moonlight are so full of beautiful imagery and wonderful music I can't see why people sing anything else. And the folk-inspired Pertersen-Berger songs are loads of fun too, although of course not as moving.
A feeling of discovery.......2000-09-23
The songs on this wonderful Swedish anthology may not be familiar to most listeners but they occupy an idiom not so dissimilar to the world of Grieg. (Otter and Forsberg's Grieg recital from a few years earlier is also indispensible.). The nostalgia-tinged melancholy (or is it wistful joy?) of Wilhelm Peterson-Berger's folk-inspired songs, for example, convey a hint of Grieg's art yet are distinctively Swedish. There are nine selections by Peterson-Berger, out of 31 total, and they all exemplify this composer in full melodic flower. The other composers offer something closer to what we think of as art songs: somewhat rarefied, reserved, melodically rich and often evocative. The piano accompaniments are always first rate. This treasury provides a rich and varied 74-minute overview of Swedish song.
If the quality of the Swedish literature as a whole is half as good as what's presented here, let's hope that this is only an introduction from Otter and Forsberg, who would seem to have this repertoire to themselves although one could not hope for more understanding interpreters. After all, they are Swedish! All of imagination of their earlier Grieg interpretations is present here as well. There is all the necessary depth of characterization without affected artsiness.
If that's not enough, this disc also won the coveted Gramophone Award.

Silent Sound's Nightfall is a haunting, soulful CD perfect for teaching yoga, as I always play music to help students center and relax within themselves. The touches of harmonica and mandolin are particularly beautiful, making it a uniquely appealing CD now among my handful of favorites.
