Amazon.com essential recording

One of the must-own soul albums, Greatest Hits is fattened with five extra tracks in this reissue. Al Green brought the Memphis Sound into the '70s by slightly softening it, melding smooth funkiness with his miraculous voice and innate sensitivity: his love songs, while perfect for the bedroom, are as conversational as they are blatantly seductive. By adding the likes of "Belle," a 1977 single that's a near-goodbye to the pop life, to the original lineup of "Let's Stay Together," "Look What You Done for Me," "Call Me," and the others, this edition of Greatest Hits also intriguingly fills out the story. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars it's been stated by so many others..........2007-07-01

No one, but no one, is better than Al Green when it comes to heart-wrenching, gut-churning tales of heartbreak and woe.
I call it singing that is absolutely emotionally honest and believable and easy to relate to (if you've ever been in any of these situations--and who hasn't?)

The man (with his voice) has the ability to heal/mend when it comes to matters of the heart. It certainly seems that way.
Can't praise him enough.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Package for Al Green's Hits.......2007-05-16

All the best known Rev. Green songs are here, along with several lesser known, but still enjoyable, selections. This is must-have music for rock and rhythm and blues fans. You will find yourself trying to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars A Greatest Hits Masterpiece.......2007-03-29

A lot if not most greatest hits collections have some hits and some padding. Not this album. This is one great collection. The five songs tacked on at the end made this album a must own masterpiece. If you like Al Green's 70's output, you WILL like this CD.Every single song is a classic.Ol Skool Al Green fans (like myself) might already have at least a couple of his albums already, but this CD sums up why he's soul legend.

P.S.:Do yourself a favor and pick up some of his 70's era albums starting with "I'm Still In Love With You" if you haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-01-25

5 out of 5 stars Leon Lives! Leon Rocks!.......2006-03-16

This CD is a "Best of" better than Leon's previous selections of favorites. Featured are my favorites, his incredibly fine ballads, now multi-genre classics: "A Song for You", "Lady Blue", "This Masquerade". From the great "Carney" album also come more ballads, "Magic Mirror", "Tightrope", "Out in Woods". "Back to the Island" is achingly yearning, and hypnotically atmospheric. But there's lots of hard-rocking stuff, too. The recordings are the originals, and sound quality is excellent.

Leon Russell was at the epicenter of the rock world when he came on the scene in the 60s, playing keyboards with many other rock greats, not least of whom was Joe Cocker -- Leon headed up the Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour band. Though Cocker was better known, Leon had the ultimate 'chops.' When you listen to his own music, you can see that he is a composer and player of greater depth and sophistication than most of his peers. And he can boogie like no one else.

I had the good fortune to stumble upon a small concert by the new Leon Russell band last year at The Cutting Room in New York. What a thrill to be so close up to this old idol after so long! It was impossible to sit still! Surrounded by his huge mane of now-white hair, the ole "Master of Space and Time" is infirm, he walks with difficulty. But his fingers are totally alive, and he seems to be doing well. Two of his daughters are in the band, which is tight as can be -- raising hopes for more recordings beyond this retrospective.

This is a fine introduction to the music of this rock legend. It's as fresh now as it was then!

5 out of 5 stars Al Green At His Best.......2007-01-24

This album gets most of the best of Al's early recordings, but it missed a few. All in all this is a good collection of the best of Al Green.

5 out of 5 stars Have I been asleep?.......2006-07-24

Just seen him live in Brooklyn NY,which compelled me to go out and buy this timeless Jewel. The show was pretty awesome as well. I've always heard the usual radio tracks and knew he was probably someone very special, musically, but after seeing him then picking up this double disk, I now realize that of course his voice is like silk but the bands music was just pure Brillance.
As I listen to these timless great tracks it's easy to get lost in either his voice, the words, the organ, the rhytym guitar, the horns or the Drums. It like their either all working or theirs a standout instrument, the Voice and the words are always their.
Like in "I'm Still in love with you" it's possible to get lost in any one of these elements
but what really stands out is the Drums, the way he sets the tempo, changes it then comes back to it,while everyone else comes in and out one at a time is just something to marvel at.an audiophiles dream, their's just so much to listen to in this one track catching it once in a while on the radio could never do it justice, and I'm sure you could say that about anyone of these 34 tracks, they each have something special about them and Al is always just right there, steady and smooth.
In concert this past week his vocal was strong and steady and on few occasions while he was singing songs like "Lets get Married" and "Simply Beautiful" he looked like he took a short trip to that other place, the place few of us get to,while alive.
He was still in total control of the voice, mic and the crowd.
It's not just my Farthers music anymore.
I"m so glad he's still with us.

5 out of 5 stars Minister of Soul..........2005-04-20

I grew up on a steady diet of Al Green and I always said when I got my own place, I would never listen to an Al Green song, nor would I eat okra! Well at least, I kept to one of those promises I made myself! I refuse to eat okra but as far as Mr. Green, well he's down in my bone marrow, so I have no choice. It's amazing as much as I cried about Saturday morning house cleaning while listening to Al Green, it turns out that I have become my mother! I do exactly as she did...I wake up on Saturday mornings put on my Al Green and commence to cleaning my house, from top to bottom. The only difference is that its not an 8 track and I don't use Pine Sol or Ajax! Isn't it strange how we come full circle!

Anyway..this is a classic collection of great soul music...treat yourself..bring in something new, or visit something tried and true! This CD contains great rare hits like "Belle" and "Full of Fire", most compilations don't usually include those 2 tracks. I'm glad they finally did a two disc set of his music...that has all the great radio hits and plenty of rare and off the beaten path tracks too! I love Al Green, and as much as I tried to get away from him, it's amazing how I ended up happily with him, just like an old trusty blanket!

Oh and this CD also has two of my all time favorite Al Green songs..,"Livin' For You," and "You Ought To Be With Me." They could have added his version of "Pretty Woman," but this set doesn't lack because it isn't here, just a personal choice of mine. Other classic rare cuts: "I've Never Found A Girl," and "I Can't Get Next To You."

Please, please, take my advice: Run...don't walk to purchase these classic gems! You will never regret the decision to add Mr. Soul Man himself in all his splendid glory to your music collection. He personifies Gritty Soul!

Here's Leon Russell circa 1973 doing a set of classic country covers with some of Nashville's finest session men--never has an album been more straightforward. That's not to say it's disappointing--or great, for that matter--it just is what it is. Hardly essential, it's nevertheless a downright enjoyable listen. And any chance to hear Curly Chalker play steel guitar is welcome indeed. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Leon Russell's alter-ego.......2007-05-18

This is the first of four "Hank Wilson" CDs by Leon Russell. I have all four - Hank Wilson's Back, Return of Hank Wilson Vol. 2, A Legend in my Time - Hank Wilson Vol 3, and Hank Wilson Vol 4 - Rhythm & Bluegrass. These songs as performed by Leon seem as if they were written with him in mind. Although he has added a few twists here and there, these songs are as true to the original artists as imaginable. My favorites are Vol 2, 3, 1 and 4 in that order, although I enjoy them all. These are a must-have for all Leon Russell fans.

"Hank Wilson's Back" is a real tribute to the great songs of early country music. When lyrics and melody are blended with Leon Russell's unique style of singing, the result is an enjoyable and memorable experience! I recommend this CD for anyone who is a fan of country and/or Leon.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of Time and Space.......2007-05-15

I didn't discover this album until about 5 years ago. I heard him on Mad Dogs and Englishmen but had not thought of buying his solo albums.
This is his debut solo album and its great.
This isn't surprising since the list of guest musicians is a whos who from the 60s and 70s:
George Harrison
Eric Clapton
Steve Winwood
Chris Stainton
Klaus Voorman
Bobby Whitlock
etc...

The star though is Leon himself.
I've got to honest here, his voice may not be to everybodys taste, but I like it.
A Song For you has been covered by many people - this remains the best version.
Delta Lady is better known for the Joe Cocker version - but its Leon's song and this is great version.
Shoot out on the Plantation features Leon's distinctive Piano work (as indeed a lot of the album does) and is my favourite track. This and Dixie Lullaby are great rock 'n' roll tracks.

Theres also some great Gospel influnced Rock on this album. Such as Give Peace a Chance (this is not the Lennon song).
In the same way I Put a Spell on You is not the song Nina Simone made famous. Leon wrote all the material except the bonus track which is a slightly odd Dylan cover.

This is the album I have played the most over the last few years and at the moment I show no signs of getting bored with it!

5 out of 5 stars Leon Russell and the Shelter people.......2007-02-09

Not many studio albums ever made make you feel like you are at a live concert. This is a true gem. Great piano!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Leon Russell's First Album Contains Some Timeless Gems.......2007-01-16

Leon Russell, despite having cerebral palsy, wrote some timeless gems, several of which appear here. These include his original version of "Delta Lady", which Joe Cocker made into an FM standard (with Russell playing guitar), and "Hummin'bird", covered by Bob Seger on SMOKIN' OP'S. In addition, this album paved the way for the whole Tulsa, OK rock scene, as well as for Adult Contemporary star Rita Coolidge and disco group the Gap Band. Russell's advocacies of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, and increased funding for law enforcement, make this album an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Master of Time and Space? Seems like an understatement........2006-12-02

Like many others, I first discovered Leon on Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen album. Although the entire album is great, Russell's performance of "Hummingbird" was an instant favorite. I liked his voice so much I had to get this album, and it was certainly money well spent. "Hummingbird" is even better here, complete with the spirited outtro chorus that really makes the song. One of the surprises was the opening track, "A Song For You," which has become something of a standard in its own right. This is truly one of the most beautiful and heartfelt love ballads I've ever heard, and an amazingly low-key way to start an album. Many people are familiar with the song "Delta Lady," which was written by Leon but originally recorded by Joe Cocker. I think it's safe to say that the Master's own amazing version of "Delta Lady" is actually better than Cocker's by a long shot (although I love both). Being his signature song, it embodies almost every style he has become known for. "Delta Lady" is not only Leon's best song, it is one of the all-time greatest songs in popular music. Another highlight is "Pisces Apple Lady," although I wish it was a little longer!

As for the rest of the album, the raucous tunes are tons of fun to listen to, and Russell is clearly a very skilled musician and songwriter. There is an equal blend of rock, blues, and gospel styles, all tinged with a bit of slightly inebriated country (the inebriation being most pronounced during "Give Peace A Chance"). It's obvious that everyone involved (many of them very famous and respected in their own right) had a blast making this album. I don't really know why some people say he's an acquired taste...if you can't acquire a taste for this there must be something wrong. A very great album, highly recommended to all.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Leon, and dig the cover artwork.......2007-03-28

Grab this while it's cheap, its classic Leon Russell. The cool cover art is by Tulsa's own Gailard Sartain. Two Tulsa boys for the price of one.

5 out of 5 stars A 70's Classic.......2007-03-10

Leon Russell has outdone himself on this 70's classic. Try listening to 'Back to the Island' with headphones and you'll have a whole new level of listening pleasure. Remember when quad sound systems were all the rage? This is one reason why. Totally enjoyable listening.

5 out of 5 stars Leon at his best.......2006-02-27

This album has some of the best music Leon Russell has ever done, and that says a lot. It has some of my all-time favorite love songs.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Artist, a Real Musician.......2006-02-07

I have been thinking about this album for years now. I have it on vinyl but havn't been able to play it for at least 20 years.
I listened to it just now, or should I say the edited version, and am now going to buy it on CD. It is an amazing album. Everyone should have it in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2003-11-12

I just knew Leon Russel now, in 2003, by the hands of my brother that told me that I should listen to him.
All I can say is that this cd is wonderful and that the song Bluebird is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard!!!!

I have been a fan of Leon Russell since he had a band in high school - I had the records but needed the CDs

3 out of 5 stars Carney Rocks, should be resurrected........2007-03-23

Carney album by Leon Russell should be on the air on a daily basis. This album is a gift to mankind by a genius, thank you Leon.

3 out of 5 stars Leon is a master - but.......2007-03-09

This is not my favorite of Leon Russell's early albums - still, that is because not EVERY song on it is excellent. If you are just looking to add some early Leon to your collection, go with Asylum Choir II and Leon Russell and the Shelter People.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-02-07

This is one of Leon Russell's most fabulous albums. Every song is terrific. And Leon is at his best.

5 out of 5 stars like new.......2007-05-14

it's great to be able to buy some of my old classic favorites from others who no longer listen to them

5 out of 5 stars For my mum........2007-02-27

I remember listening to the vinyl version of this with my mother. I remember hazy sunlight filtering through our hippy curtains, the flared jeans and tight tops, the feeling that something wonderful was about to happen. I remember (barely) Watergate and my dad's Monte Carlo and the constant sound of music my young parents played. That Phoebe Snow had a miserable career (and life) after this album (perhaps before) breaks my heart because it so epitomizes a time in my life and a feeling in the air from say 73-76 that there was a mellow, meloncholy force of good in the world that is now of course no where to be found.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Gem .......2006-07-13

I've had this CD awhile (first owned as a cassette) and played it often for years. In going through my music to see what treasures are so essential that they must be replaced, this was way high on the list. (So was another of the incomparable Snow's work, Something Real.)
Snow's VOICE is impossible to easily characterize, so I won't try. But she is, simply put, a unique and brilliant interpreter of songs, not a mere singer. Whatever the emotion of the song, she captures it completely and conveys it so intensely that you experience it as your own.
That is artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Phoebe Snow CD - released 1974.......2006-02-25

Excellent disc! Jazz, blues, folk, rock all fused into one. Phoebe can fingerpick guitar like WOW! Uses interesting chord voicings too. She's surrounded by excellent musicians on this disc. I bought the LP when it was originally released in 1974, then traded it away a few years later. Am real glad I acquired it again.

5 out of 5 stars phoebe snow - debut album.......2005-06-05

I first heard this album way back in 1974, via Phoebe's "Poetry Man". The soft velvety texture of her voice on this song, as well as "San Francisco Bay Blues", made me a fan for life. I never forgot the impact she made on me with her singing and I had hoped that many people would discover her music. Only now are people discovering and in some cases, "rediscovering" her. She never went out of style for me, and I for one am glad she is finally finding her place in the sun with a new allegiance of younger fans. I still have my old vinyl album. Incidentally, many people may also be surprised to realize this album was originally produced by Shelter Records. Yes, that's right, the recording studio of the "Master of Space and Time" himself, the great Leon Russell! The producer of the album was Dino Airali and the co-producer and engineer was Phil Ramone, with the record distributed by MCA Records. Long live the essence of Phoebe!

4 out of 5 stars An Old GEM.......2007-03-09

Buy this and Asylum Choir II and you will have a taste of Make Love Not War Boogie from the mid 60s to the early 70s. Two of my favorite albums back then. They haven't lost a thing over 40+ years.

5 out of 5 stars Sing it one more time...I didn't hear ya!.......2007-01-05

This follow up to Leon's self-titled debut album finds the Master of Space and Time in a more focused songwriting mood than before, and a slightly more polished overall sound. I wouldn't say it's better than his first one, since that had too many great songs to be truly topped, but Shelter People is certainly an album that grows on you. It is more consistently interesting than its predecessor. The songs are longer and more thoughtful. Leon Russell was an amazing album with a lot of awesome songs, but there's no doubt Russell was using the shotgun approach when it came to song styles. Just about everything plus the kitchen sink made it on the album. This is not the case on Shelter People. It starts with what is probably my all-time favorite ballad, "Stranger in a Strange Land." This unlikely album opener is the best song on the album, mostly due to Leon's outstanding vocal work. I have often wondered how a voice as unique and awesome as his could really exist, but every time I listen to his albums there it is again. "Of Thee I Sing" is another great song, much more upbeat (might have been a better opener than the ballad but whatever). The compelling piano work and backup singers give it loads of energy. The album moves along very solidly with one rockin tune after another until after "The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen." Things get a little less solid after this lovely tribute to the infamous Joe Cocker Rock and Roll road show of the same name. The songs are still good, but it just seems to lose some of its focus with a lot of experimental sounding cover songs from Dylan and Harrison. Regardless of its faults, Shelter People is, along with Leon Russell, one of the two "must have" Leon Russell studio albums.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably Leon Russell's Best studio album. .......2006-05-09

During the time period of this album (1970 - 1972) Leon Russell was the top rock concert act in the world. Back in the day when most rock groups had four or five members, Leon Russell hit the road with no less than ten top of the line performers, including Derek and the Dominos bassist Carl Radle, and Rev. Patrick Henderson and Black Grass.

On Leon Russell and The Shelter, you get a studio recording that captures much of Leon's concert feel - but where you can understand the words, and the instruments are balanced well. I don't remember if the the personnel are the same, but the feel is right there! Starting with "Of Thee I Sing," and through to the end of the album you'll be looking for a flat peice of ground so you can dance. The piano work is awesome, combining Leon's Black Gospel style (he also played on some of Andrae Crouch's albums) with a bit of blues, honky and country.

If you're a musician, you'll want this album for the "utility licks" and turn arounds and the gold nuggets of playing that Leon throws out there. This album is the one I learned to play pianq from, by listening to it over and over and picking it out bit by bit.

All in all, it's a great selection of a genre of music that is timeless and will make you feel good - and you definitely won't get an inferiority complex as you sing along with Leon! It's about the feeling rather than having a velvety smooth David Gates (Leon also played with him, in the sixties, prior to Bread) voice. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars A pure primal bluesy rock n' roll voice and the funkiest of rock n' roll piano players........2006-03-20

He has the insight, the purity of rhythm, the soul, the inspiration, the voice, and the musical sensibility to place him up there with the greats: Carl Perkins, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams. Check him out on George Harrison's "The Concert for Bangla Desh" (where he steals the show).

5 out of 5 stars Top class remix with bonus tracks.......2006-02-28

I had a tape of the original recording in the 70's that is now long past its use by date. This remix is excellent, each instrument is bright and clear with no loss at the bass end (and no tape hiss). The liner notes list the performers on each track and the recording details. Not important for everyone but necessary for those who are interested in the music makers. This CD is a must for Leon Russell fans and comes with three bonus tracks each performed in Leon Russell's unmistakable style.
