Editorial Reviews

In film scoring's best moments it's easy to forget that it's as much craft as art, at best a shotgun marriage of music and commerce. Which is exactly the challenge veteran composer Eliot Goldenthal faced segueing from his sublime Frida, the rich, Mexican folk-inflected score that netted him an Oscar, to this more traditional Hollywood action vehicle. Goldenthal ably echoes the film's admirable realism-over-stunts mentality with the same brooding, deliciously dark orchestral sensibility he brought to Titus and the surprising Final Fantasy. And then there's the commerce--great dollops of rock guitar and pounding rhythms that often seem grafted on as some sort of marketing enticement. Yet left to his own devices, Goldenthal often proves he's as capable as any of the McClub-oriented tracks commissioned from the likes of Danny Saber and Apollo Four Forty--and on spare, slinky cues like "Don't Shoot Me Baby" and "Three Chords in Two Minutes" (now there's a film scorer's inside joke-title) may just be one step ahead. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.
memories.......2007-02-22
This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended
TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.
TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.
Deja Vu.......2006-02-17
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

The international crossover success of tenor Andrea Bocelli has spawned any number of imitators on both sides of the Atlantic. But this collection of romantic arias and duets with violinist-conductor Lorin Maazel (who also arranges and helms the London Symphony Orchestra here) proves once again that the classical canon still offers ample room for compelling reinvention without nettlesome pop affectations. In reviving a genre (violin and vocal) largely dormant since the days of Caruso, Bocelli has taken some rewarding liberties with Rodrigo's "En Aranjuez can ta amor" and forged Liszt's familiar Liebestraume No. 3 into "Sogno D'Amore" with new, self-penned lyrics. Maazel's warm, evocative violin obligatos and sensitive, sympathetic arrangements infuse this tenor's showcase not only with unabashed romance, but as their lively romp through Tosti's "Malia" demonstrates, a sense of joyous fun. An album for romantics of all ages and persuasions--and one that gratifyingly demonstrates that crossing over is hardly the same as selling out. Enhanced CD includes a mini-documentary with comments by Bocelli and Maazel, as well as links to a more comprehensive interview with the tenor. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Fine idea, weak execution.......2007-04-26
Lorin Maazel, in the self-indulgent pat on the back that passes for linear notes, manages to make one good point: the tenor-violin duet was once a fine tradition worthy of exploring afresh. As an effort to revive this dusty tradition, this disc is not successful.
Maazel seems to enjoy the feel of the violin under his chin, and generally produces elegant sounds. The orchestration, which he tells us in his notes evolved amidst a hectic schedule of conducting and rehearsing Don Carlo and Don Giovanni, is basic and generally inoffensive. Good thing he tells the listener of his busy schedule, or one would have to be harsher with his sometimes dreary musical arrangements.
Andrea Bocelli is something of a controversial figure in some circles. I am a picky listener, and suffer from the maniacal ailments that afflict the opera buff. Still, I have always enjoyed Bocelli's popular recordings. I like pleasant tunes sung by a full, clear tenor voice. Having said this, I find his operatic recordings lamentable.
Though not opera per se, Bocelli sounds over-taxed by the repertory at hand (mostly lovely 19th century songs). Each track is unworthy of comparison with past performances by operatic greats-- Pavarotti, Carreras, Gigli, Di Stefano, and Schipa come to mind. Bocelli's voice is strained, and he offers nothing resembling the grace required by these three-minute masterpieces.
Those who are in love with Bocelli's voice will no doubt enjoy this recording. Still, I strongly urge exploring this repertory as it is presented by far more capable performers, and far better endowed voices.
He's magnificent.......2007-03-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this CD, especially some favorites that I haven't heard in years. I wholeheartedly recommend.
Romantic sounds!.......2007-01-12
Adrea's voice continues to enthrall me! Even if you don't understand Italian, you will enjoy this album. Highly recommended.
Simply beautiful!.......2006-07-09
I wont repeat what others with positive reviews already said. Just know that none of Bocelli's CD's have ever disappointed me, and if you are looking for as fine a piece of work as possible (thus far), THIS and "Romanza" are it.
Average Bocelli at best.......2005-01-20
I bought this Bocelli album because I truly wanted to hear him perform "Plaisir D'Amour," one of my all time favorites. While I do love Bocelli I wasn't completely impressed with the entire CD. This is not the best I've heard from Andrea and his voice is not great throughout the CD. I do enjoy it though. He's one of the few artists I can listen to these days without getting a headache.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:
Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25
'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.
I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.
Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29
Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.
Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06
These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.
Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12
This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.
the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05
This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

Relaxing music at its finest!.......2005-10-14
This is a GREAT 10-CD set!The performances are top-notch, the music is varied, and the feelings engendered are wondrously beautiful.
Get it for $9.99 at Sam's Club!.......2005-06-22
Very nice set of CD's, very beatiful and relaxing, but don't pay $27, get it for $9 at Sam's Club. I know this will be censored but come on, how can you guys charge those saps that much! Amazon should try to find the best price for its customers, even if it sends them to different vendors. Censoring this message is a crime, DON'T DO IT. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Beautiful, moving music! You'll recognize many of the pieces.......2004-02-24
John Cheng's review, below, said it's "an undeniable bargain," and I whole heartedly agree! I especially LOVE Volume 5. I have a Typing/Resume business, and I listen to Volume 5 ALL the time on my computer while I'm doing my work. It inspires me to be creative and calms me down when I'm stressed.
I would say I've _easily_ listened to Volume 5 at least 100 times, and I'm still not tired of it. That's amazing for me, because I'm also a musician (singer/pianist) and I get bored easily. I actually found the Volume 5 CD at a Thrift store, and loved it so much that I bought the whole set recently. So I've only listened to a few of the other CD's in this set, so far, and they're also great.
This is NOT boring music. My clients and family have heard it also, and they've also mentioned how soothing and wonderful these pieces are. Most of you will probably recognize a lot of these songs! You'll be saying, "OH! I remember THIS one! I haven't heard this for YEARS!!!"
It's well worth the money for 10 very full CD's!!! Try it! You won't be disappointed!
Happy listening!

Meditative, But Not Boring.......2002-06-21
Here's the deal: If you check out the individual CDs of this collection, you'll pay way too much. That said, compare this price, and realize it is a steal at twice the price.
The list of selections is immense. 101 selections. Most of it you've heard before, but that's OK. Despite the various cute names -- quite creative -- "Vol. 9"!... you can load your CD player and enjoy them without feeling a transition of style.
It's true these aren't meditative in the sense of a Gregorian chant. Anyone familiar with classical music will recognize the composers and various movements to know this. What is true is that you can sit down and write Amazon reviews with it in the background quite comfortably. No weird interpretations, just the music as you know it.
It is also meditative in the sense of popping on it your portable player as you go for a Sunday afternoon walk. The music has just the right pacing: no quite aerobics class, but not ready for the office elevator either.
The box and jewel cases are not that flimsy kind of thing often associated with box sets. It sounds silly to review the jewel cases, but I'm frustrated with the ones I've received lately that have no meat to them. This'll do the job.
I fully recommend "Meditation: Classical Relaxation, 10 Volume Set [BOX SET].

A Bargain and Beautiful.......2002-02-28
This is a wonderful collection of some of my most favorite classical selections. Most I already own, but still like having these all together. I could only wish that the recording level was the same for all selections. Yes, some are written to be softer, but I found it often necessary to turn the volume up or down for different selections. But aside from this minor preference, the quality, the choices, and the price are all super.

beautiful perfomances of exsquisite madrigals.......2005-10-01
The first 3 books of Gesualdo's madrigals don't have the startling chromaticism and the violent rhythmic contrasts of the 5th and 6th books, but they're rich pieces nonetheless and here and there are hints of the over the top imagination of the later works. These performances are characterized by accurate intonation and lovely timbre. This is one of my favorite recordings of Italian madrigals.

Bryn Terfel is the most recent in a long line of great Welsh singers (and certainly one of the greatest)--a people who proverbially are "born with music in the blood and poetry in the soul." Here, he sings the songs of his native Wales: hymns, folksongs, art songs, tender lullabies, yearning songs of love and homesickness, and heroic, defiant patriotic songs--including the Welsh National Anthem, which opens and closes the program. Terfel's voice, flowing out effortlessly like a golden stream, is phenomenal for its incomparable beauty, its range of dynamics, its inflection, and its intensity; his expressiveness is simpler and more natural than usual, and seems really to come straight from his soul. In honor of another great Welsh tradition, two splendid male choirs accompany him; in the fine orchestra, the English horn and harp soloists are particularly striking. The only false note on this heartwarming disc is the lush, garish orchestration, which runs counter to the ingenuous spirit of the songs and often almost resembles a soundtrack. The prime example is the lovely lullaby that's popular in English as "All Through the Night." Terfel sings it with wonderful simplicity; the orchestration is out of a grade-B movie. No wonder, therefore, that the more magical moments are those in which Terfel sings alone with a cappella chorus, harps, or piano; especially in the quiet, inward songs. The accompanying booklet is done beautifully, with stunning photographs of the Welsh countryside, a brief account of Welsh history and music, and texts in both Welsh and English. --Edith Eisler

Gwlad! Gwlad!.......2007-06-03
I saw Bryn Terfel sing Mozart at Lyric Opera in Chicago--unforgettable stage presence and energy, but I was more taken with his performances of English songs I'd heard on the radio. On this disc the full range of his musical talent is on display, alternately belting out nationalist songs, then singing hymns and traditional pieces with amazing tenderness. There are moments where the arrangements are a bit cheesy but the choirs are fantastic and Terfel is in fabulous voice throughout. Being a DG production the sonics are warm and natural. Overall, a beautiful addition to Terfel's wide ranging discography.
Pleasantly surprised.......2007-05-12
I only bought this CD because I wanted a good recording of Cvm Rhondda. Well I got that and much more. Myfanwy is just wonderful. I didn't know who Bryn Terfel was, but now I'm a fan.
So Welsh!.......2006-11-10
An absolutely delightful CD just full of the most wonderful melodic welsh songs and hymns, and what can you say about Bryn's voice other than 'fabulous', rich and vibrant - rather like smooth, dark chocolate. What a wonderful Christmas gift this CD would be for someone who has exquisite taste in music.
Very Enjoyable and Uplifting CD.......2005-07-24
Bryn Terfel picked songs that meant a lot to him growing up in Wales, and also which represent the Welsh spirit. I really enjoy listening to this CD, and know you will, too! Simply beautiful and stirring melodies, sound food for both ear and soul.
Nostalgia for Wales.......2004-05-15
Bryn Terfel, with his magnificent baritone, sings a wonderful selection of songs that makes me wish that I was Welsh. My husband was born in Wales and this is a wonderful way for our children to know more of their heritage by listening to the Welsh language as it is sung and following the words in Welsh, then reading the translation. This CD is definitely a favorite.

Get lost in this "Ritual".......2007-04-07
I was first introduced to Witchdoctor (then known as EJ the Witchdoctor) with his guest appearance on Goodie Mob's "The Coming" from their classic 1995 album Soul Food, and again on OutKast's "Ova da Wudz" from ATLiens. As a fan of all things Dungeon Family, I picked up this album expecting something along the lines of a traditional DF release, with the funky southern twang and top notch production from Organized Noize. I was definitely in for a treat. Witchdoctor is maybe the most interesting rapper on DF's roster. He is obsessed with African spirituality, voodoo, and southern religion, telling many cryptic tales and using his voice to shout and sing as well as rap. The Organized Noize production crew, the men behind all of the classic DF albums, come up big with the beats, and they sound totally unlike any of their other music. The music is tailor-made for Witchdoctor's style, utilizing a mixture of African tribal sounds and soulful southern funk for a one-of-a-kind style. And while this is a totally unique album, there's no mistaking it for a Dungeon Family project, with Big Rube's spoken interludes and guest appearances from Goodie Mob and OutKast. Some songs are truly incredible, Witchdoctor pours so much emotion and spirituality into the very best that they can be really moving, especially with the great production. There are a few tracks that sort of interrupt the flow of the album and don't really relate to the album's whole theme, but the abundance of original, interesting songs make this an album that I highly recommend, and one that stacks favorably against the other great, lesser-known DF releases such as Cool Breeze's East Point's Greatest Hits and Killer Mike's Monster.
The album begins with my favorite song on the disc, the amazing "7th Floor/The Serengetti" featuring a Soul Food-era Cee-Lo. Even if you can't buy this album, I think you must hear this incredible song. The song kicks in with a slow, thumping bass heavy beat, which then gives way to horns and Witchdoctor's awesome hook ("Every day we get dooooown...on our kneeeeees..."). Both rappers deliver excellent verses making this a song to remember. "Holiday/12 Scanner" was the album's single, a musically and lyrically interesting cut with a little philosophy on it. "A.T.L. the Great Big Lick" is a decent cut but probably will fall under skip material for most, where Witchdoctor and Mook B rap about street life in Atlanta. "Island Koneelalee" is very nice, a fantastic tale about a magical place with suitable musical backing. Cool Breeze collaborates on the good "Georgia Plains (Holy Grounds)," and Witchdoctor makes the deep "Hurtin'" a highlight. Another of my favorites is "Heaven Comin'," a mournful track that shows his religious and spiritual side with an excellent performance by ONP on the beat. "4 in the Temple" features Big Gipp, T-Mo and Phoenix for a hook-less rap. "Smooth S..." would fit perfectly on "Soul Food" or "ATLiens," a contemplative, slow and musically subtle song with incredible lyricism from Witchdoctor, T-Mo and Khujo. "The Ancient Sahore" is Witchdoctor at his best, living up to his name with the theme of spells and rituals on a song that is blessed with the album's best beat and a hook that might have you yelling along with it even if you have no idea what it means. "Dez Only 1" is a joyful ode to God, featuring OutKast, and it's one of the very best songs on the disc. "The Ritual" is a little too odd to be very enjoyable. The last song is "Lil' Mama's Gone," a depressing black spiritual about the loss of a mother.
This album is criminally slept on, and while it's hard for me to believe that it's been a full nine years since its release, it saddens me to see that it's out of print. This is so original and interesting. While it's still pretty widely available, I recommend that all Dungeon Family fans pick it up, it's one of the many excellent albums from the South's premier hip hop collective, but truly among the very best.
EJ's Voodo Rhymes (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars).......2006-12-11
Not sure how many people remember this guy, but EJ The Witchdoctor was one of those artists that hung around many other popular Duengon Family based artists (mostly Goodie Mob and Outkast). He would appear at various parts on their albums. I think the earliest he appeared was on Outkast's "Ova Da Woods" on their ATLiens. He did the hook to that song.
Comming out with his debut album "A S.W.A.T. Healin' Ritual" he was considered to sort of be "that weird" guy from the ATL (as far as I knew). Actually around this time, the Dungeon Family was being formed, and his album was the first to be released after the group was created. He would have some tracks that would grab your attention throughout this album. Not many people remember his lead single "Holiday", but it was a good starting point for this guy. He had the lyrical skills to carry himself throughout the album, like on "Island Koneelalee". The skits were mostly good as they would go about medicine and healing process, to go along with his name like "Spells". Production is dark sounding, that easily fits the concept of this album. And I believe thats not a bad job singing on the song "Lil' Mama Gone". That song sounds preety emotional.
The problem with EJ The Witchdoctor was that when he had guests on his tracks, he would be outshined by them. For example, like the spiritual "Dez Only One" Big Boi would have the better verse in that song. The same effect would happen in "Gerogia Plains" where Cool Breeze (another ATL artist that was criminally swept under the rug) would outsine him. "4 In The Temple" featuring Big Gipp of Goodie Mob, and Phenix sounds like it was cut from a freestyle session and ended up on this album. Also another problem is that he would switch up his style to sound sort of gangsta like on various parts of this album. "The Ancient Shore" is one of those tracks I'm talking about, but it still sounds good, so I'll make that my honorable mention track.
"A S.W.A.T." is a dope album for the most part. Witchdoctor proved that he would have the lyrical skills throughout his debut. Even though he was outshined by many of the guests, he still did a good job. Unfortunately this album was slept on by the masses, which caused him to go unoticed. I believed it was bad timing, because he was overshadowed by "Still Standing" and "Aquemini", that came out the same year. I believe this should have came out a year earlier. If you're a fan of any Duengon Family related albums, you will enjoy this here.

The Healin'.......2005-05-25
Dungeon Family member finally steps out on his debut A S.W.A.T Healin' Ritual as a slept on classic. Production was held down by none other than Organized Noize, two from ROB & Emperor Searcy and one from Mr. DJ to create an album that literally fits the name Witchdoctor with spooky, southern, ancient beats. "Holiday/12 Scanner" was the only single and video from Witchdoctor that professes the art of hustling and getting paid. He represents his hometown well with Mook B. on "A.T.L. The Great Big Lick". The exotic "Island Koneelalee" about beautiful women is a good song without the disrespect. Witchdoctor team up with Cool Breeze with the riding bass on "Georgia Plains (Holy Grounds)". Big Rube spoke wisdom on "Remedy". "...him comin', him comin'...", as said on "Heaven Comin'" as he stresses his belief in a higher power. Another highlight "4 In The Temple" features Big Gipp, T-Mo & Phoenix. He even shows his skills on the guitar strung "Lil' Mama's Gone" as he sings on the last track. If you like OutKast or Goodie Mob this is a mixture of both conscienceness and originality. "Spells" have been casted the moment you press play!
A Masterpiece.......2004-12-01
Dungeon Family are pioneers in invoted hip hop. This is a great disc if you love outkast or goodie mob, your brain takes control of this album. BUy now
One of the greatest hip-hop albums ever.......2004-06-16
EJ Da Witchdoctor spits pure fire over this LP, he never misses a beat. Lyrically he's on another level, showing he belongs among the elite Dungeon Family. This album is a must have for all, Dez Only 1!!!

Historically important choral music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-05-25
For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD presents 20th Century choral arrangements of music from the African American spiritual tradition rooted in spirituals and gospels, including Harry T. Burleigh's "My Lord, What a Mornin'" (1929), "Walk Together Children" (William Henry Smith, 1937) and more contemporary composers like Sanford Moore's "Go Tell It On The Mountain" (1993.)
There are excellent notes about the genre, however, in light of the historical significance of this music I'm surprised and disappointed to find no biographical information about the composers, not even birth and/or death dates, with this CD. I feel this is a crucial component in an "outreach" project like this, especially since most of these composers are not well known. Still I highly recommend it for the music alone.
The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
DANCE LIKE THE WIND: Music of Today's Black Composers
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age
