Someone Like You [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Someone Like You has a few kinks and surprises worth checking out. Cultural icon and professional cornball Tom Jones adds his perfect smarm to a duet with Sweden's Cardigans for a technologically advanced--and surprisingly funky--rendition of the Talking Heads' classic "Burning Down the House." London Bus Stop, on the other hand, neither disgrace nor improve T. Rex's glam-rock classic "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" by rapping the verses and adding superfluous female back-up singers to the choruses. The rest is previously released but makes for a fluid mix of quirky love songs. Annie Lennox locates the gentle sentiment behind the fury of the Clash's 1980 classic "Train in Vain." Critics' darling Stephin Merritt quickly struts through the fun-loving if atypical lo-fi Magnetic Fields track "Absolutely Cuckoo." Van Morrison brings this brief collection (total time: 37:33) to a solid close with the album's title track that exemplifies the romantic ballroom style he has either mastered or succumbed to--depending on your point of view. Best here is Shelby Lynne's sprite yet sultry "Dreamsome" where organ, flute, and Lynne's road-worn stylings merge to great effect. --Rob O'Connor

Someone like Them........2007-01-05
Overall this is a good soundtrack with a lot of great sounding songs. Nothing can beat the title song, Someone like You, sung by the songwriter Van Morrison. It was used in Bridget Jones Diary that was released around the same time as Someone like You. Two great Romantic dramedies of this century. Lets not forget that Ashley Judd stars in this great movie. Also Dreamsome is used on both soundtracks. A soundtrack to cherish.
Someone Like You..........2006-08-04
I like this soundtrack, but some songs are really ignoring to listen to, such as Track 5. I do not like some songs, but I like some songs such as Tracks 8, 9, and 10. This is your typical romance soundtrack, some of it plain and boring but some songs worth the listen. This is recommended.
1. Burning Down The House - Tom Jones/The Cardigans 3/5
2. Bang A Gong (Get It On) - London Bus Stop 3/5
3. I'm A Tree - Imani Coppola 5/5
4. It Must Be Love - Madness 3/5
5. Absolutely Cuckoo - The Magnetic Fields 2/5
6. Train In Vain - Annie Lennox 4/5
7. Woulda Coulda Shoulda - Taj Mahal/The Phantom Blues Band 3/5
8. Dreamsome - Shelby Lynne 5/5
9. You Are - Wynonna Judd 5/5

You Are - Wynonna Judd.......2006-01-14
The song in the trailer, is the best rendition of that song Wynonna has done. Almost worth buying this CD or (a second copy of) the movie for. I found a CD with the song (What the World Needs Now Is Love). It missed so much of the subtle beauty.
Van Morrison.......2006-01-07
The song with the same name as the title (Someone to watch Over Me.)by Van Morrison has got to be the best rendition of that song ever. It just makes the whole soundtrack! Probably 80 Artist have sang that song -but none do it as well as Van.
THANK YOU.......2004-02-15
THANK YOU whoever told us who sang that gorgeous song ive been searching for it for ages! THANK YOU!!!

Dreadful.......2007-06-08
When I heard the previous mini-album of the show with Petulia Clark and David Willetts I was not very impressed, so I didn't have high expectations here. Unfortunately, this album is worse. A mess of styles, dull singing, and cheesy orchestrations caused me to send this CD straight to the back of my closet. Sorry, Petulia!

Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I really like this recording. Mike Holoway and Louise Gold don't equal the brilliant and authoritative performances of Newley and Quayle, but they do very, very well.
I'm puzzled by the hostility that the performances of Holoway and Gold have provoked from most of the other reviewers. And I would think that some of the Newley lovers would be pleased that that the people at JAY think highly enough of this score to have produced a complete recording of it, even if they didn't love the result. Instead, they seem affronted by the idea that anyone would dare produce a recording with someone other than Newley as Littlechap.
Holoway has a more pleasing voice than Newley, and his acting of the songs satisfied me completely. Obviously, Newley had an authority in these songs that no one else will ever have. But Holoway is excellent.
And I think that Gold is often as funny as Quayle. There are definitely places where Quayle is absolutely matchless, brilliant and beyond comparison. But Gold is very good.
This recording is well-conducted, the orchestra plays terrifically, the orchestrations sound fabulous, and the supporting cast is fine. And it contains the entire score.
I've heard almost all of the releases in the JAY Masterworks series, and I think this is one of the best. Some of the other reviewers seemed to have been upset that neither of the recordings featuring Newley and Quayle were available while this one was. Well, it seems strange to blame this recording for that. The people at JAY weren't keeping the other ones from being released.
In any case, the Broadway recording with Newley and Quayle is again available. I'm glad to have both.
Lacks magic.......2000-02-12
Newley was the magic. At the Broadway performance we saw in '63 and in the Album with Anna Quayle there was fresh energy and not a false moment. It's not entirely fair to compare but in comparison, this is stale and leaden...like the movie made of Stop The World (without Newley).
What else we might have written was already said exactly as we would have said it by Jeff Dunn in his review.
We gave three stars because it is still Newley and Bricusse and so it is still marvelous invention and worth a '...quick butcher's hook....'

Not the Original Broadway Cast (as suggested by headline).......2000-01-29
Sorry to say that this release does not measure up to the 10/12/1988 Polydor 820 261 distributed by UNI and now out of print. I must heartily agree with Mr. Dunn (above). Bring back the Original Broadway cast!
BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST ALBUM.......2000-01-13
To start off with, I am an avid Anthony Newly fan and was really sadden by his death. I did get to see the original Broadway show. Unfortunatly, this new version does not match the original. Newlys way of putting over a song is missed. The songs seem to be sung much slower so the performers can sing the songs. It was Newlys show and when you listen to the original cast album, you can tell the difference. Lets hope they will reissue the origianl cast album again. It is an important Broadway musical and should be back on cd for the people who did not get a chance to get it when it was available. I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones. Did we really need another recording of Stop The World? I don't think so.

My favorite cd.......2004-07-10
I have had this cd since 1997 and keep coming back to it over and over. It is such wonderful music. I can't imagine why Ron Merritt hasn't made more cds using his excellent voice and phrasing. He is such a talent.
Someone Like You.......2004-04-14
I met Ron Merritt on a cruise liner in 1997. I found him to be a very talented man. His piano playing is magnificient. This is the top disc in my Ron Merritt collection . I have all of his discs personally signed by him. It is such a shame that this gorgeous talent has not made another disc. I only wish he would come down under to Australia where I live & do some live cabaret work here in Sydney. Come on Ron how about another recording.
Amazing talent.......2003-03-13
This album not only reaches the mature listener, but also appeals to the young among us. It blends music from across the scope of music today, it reaches the soul and the heart equally, and it presents a most wonderfully talented young man who blends piano performance and vocal talent equally. Even professional musicians I know acknowledge his depth of talent and are mesmerized by his vocals. We need more vocal albums from Ron Merritt, and yesterday would not be soon enough.
