Good for collectors.......2007-07-08

This is not Howard Shore and no-one should think it is, however I found it a nice addition to my LOTR music collection. I have all the Shore music and it is outstanding - this is interesting, nowhere near as good, but very nice nonetheless. I especially like the soprano Charlotte Kinder on this CD and I would recommend it just for her contribution in some ways I prefer her to Renee Fleming, but that is of course a subjective statement. The other female singer is ok, but nothing special compared to the originals.

Pretty Good.......2007-03-30

I had real high hopes for the soundtrack cause the movies ROCKED!!! This was a disappointment cause the vocal version of "Into the West" "sucked" cause the lady sounded like she lost her voice an faded in an out. They should have gotten Enya to do the vocals or AT LEAST the Into the West cause the ldy that sung it made the volume "suck" when I thought it would have a BIG finish but instead it had a BIG disappiontment!!!

Just be sure to read up on this closely... it's not the orchestra you hear in the movie, and you may be especially disappointed when you hear the vocal tracts - gone are great talents Enya and Annie Lennox, replaced by no-name voices. This is not BAD music, but don't think you're a genius for capturing the music of the movies on one inexpensive 2-CD set.

Worth It.......2006-03-30

Howard Shore's scores to the three Lord of the Rings movies are a classical masterpiece in their own right, and as such I don't mind hearing them played by a different orchestra. While I prefer the originals on the whole, this set has some very nice things to recommend it. The best part is that you get instrumental renditions of the end credits song from each film. My favorite is "Into the West," from The Return of the King, with a cello replacing Annie Lennox's vocal performance. I really disliked Lennox's ugly, popified performance of the song, but I thought that the melody and orchestration were gorgeous, so I could not be more delighted to hear the song performed by a cello, with all original orchestration intact. That one track is worth $20 to me.

This Collection Captures the Lord of the Rings Aura.......2006-01-27

From the song titled "Concerning the Hobbits" which is lighthearted and cheerful, to "The Bridge of Khazad Dum" with it's intense shadowy drums and chants this collection of The Lord of the Rings trilogy's music ensues the essence of all three movies. My favorites are included along with some new added bonus favorites now. "May It Be," "Into the West," and "The Riders of Rohan." The vocals are absolutely beautiful in some of the songs with soothing women's voices that just glide along as if riding the wind of white cottony cloud. The only down side to the CD's that I found dissapointing was that the last three songs, not being sung by the original artists, don't quite rest as well with the soul as the original's, yet are still very beautifully executed. I have listened to them over and over again even as they are different artists. I highly recomend this soundtrack compelation to anyone who enjoy's the Lord of The Rings Movie's Music.

The producers of Mike Leigh's vibrant Topsy-Turvy took many big studio meetings seeking financing for their film. Word has it all went swimmingly until time for the pitch came--there are apparently no two words as unsettling to Hollywood film execs as "Gilbert & Sullivan." But the studio system's loss turned out to be the indie film's--and our--gain. Leigh's film brought the composers' late-19th-century mounting of their breakthrough The Mikado to an all-too-familiar life, filled with as many neuroses, foibles, and fragile egos as any modern Broadway musical. The film's score, an inviting pastiche adapted from Mikado (and other G&S staples) by veteran Carl Davis, may upset purists with its time-conscious liberties. Here's a How-De-Do!.......2007-02-22

It's brilliant, really! I am a self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, and so the release of this soundtrack to accompany a truly delightful movie provided me with an "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!" moment ... many of them, actually! To hear some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite G & S operetti performed so well makes my heart "sing-o" - and me, too!

This is Gilbert and Sullivan like you will never hear again! These performances are so fresh and alive with comedy flourish that my formerly "purist" ears reveled in delight at this magnificeant rendition of these great operettas.It is wonderful to hear excerpts from PRINCESS IDA,IOLANTHE and SORCERER (as well as THE MIKADO) when so many recordings already exist of the other G&S chestnuts,PINAFORE and PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
The actual cd itself fills the speakers and is a true listener's dream.A great soundtrack of a great film.Wonderfully recorded by SONY.

Superb.......2005-02-25

This is a fantastic cd, one that I have listened to many many times without growing tired of it. The particularly nice thing about this cd for lovers of the movie is that you get to hear the entire performance for many songs which are necessarily cut short in the film, most enjoyably "A Wandring Minstrel I". As has been noted in other reviews, the vocal performances are not what you will typically find in other G & S recordings: they are far less burdened with mannered belle canto nonsense, to their immense benefit. And I must disagree with one reviewer who disparaged the staging as portrayed in the film. My wife and I saw a touring production of the Mikado which used the costumes and set from the movie, and it was fantastic. Even better, the performers seemed to take some cues from the film actors too, singing and performing in a way that was much more accessible and not a bit less pleasing.

Better than many a G&S non-sountrack.......2003-09-16

I was compelled to get this after seeing the overlong, flawed, but nonetheless all-around amazing 'Topsy Turvy'. (Seriously - almost every supporting actor in the film deserved an Oscar, and Jim Broadbent was robbed; his Gilbert is magnificent and real.)
Inspired then to hear a true G&S performance, I bought several Carte recordings. What broke my heart is that the genuine Savoy performances are not as good as those of the 'Topsy' actors! Contrary to a review here, the articulation is just dandy. And the tenor in 'Wand'ring Minstrel' alone is far, far superior to the thin, reedy, annoying versions on the several concert cds I've heard. As is the riveting soprano on the beautiful 'The Sun Whose Rays...' of 'Topsy'; again, the actual Savoy recordings are merely shrill in comparison.
I remove one star only because of the necessarily abbreviated performances here.

Put on the CD, close your eyes and..........2003-03-02

You are back in the Savoy Theater in Victorian England, watching a Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Mikado, or Yeoman of the Guard, or the Sorcerer, or Princess Ida. The qualiity of the music is superb, the voices are wonderful and I only wish I could have videos of all the G&S productions to watch along with the music.

Really, really, REALLY BAD!.......2006-11-22

Bought and returned it with the first few minutes after sliding it into the player. The cover art is nice. As for the, um, muzak, I expected something less...fuzzy. Even the player hated it, spitting it out within seconds after tasting the first track.
If any of the original movie scores rate 5 stars, this rates a solid 10 black holes, IMHO.

Deceptive Title & Trade Dress.......2006-07-27

The title line of this product says Enya (Composer), Roma Enya / Ryan (Composer), Annie / Walsh, Fran / Shore, Howard Lennox (Composer), Howard Shore (Composer), Fran Shore Howard / Walsh (Composer). Had I read the descriptions more closely, I would have seen that the composers were listed in a way that made no sense. Rather, the list merely is composed of the names of the writers, musicians, and composers of the music in Peter Jackson's trilogy, so that someone who is familiar with the music of the trilogy would be deceived into buying this subpar and inadequate product. The trade dress is deceptive enough that it might border on trademark/trade dress infringment of the real stuff.
If you are a fan of the LOTR soundtracks and/or Howard Shore, I would avoid this product and opt for: 1) the official soundtracks of the trilogy; and 2) The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring The Complete Recordings. Let's hope they follow up with the Two Towers and the Return of the King Complete Recordings.

This was a major disappointment.......2006-06-21

Too bad I can't give this one no stars. This disk is really bad. The performance is by a bland synthesizer "orchestra" without any of the depth or emotion you can find on the movie soundtracks. I would sell this CD back to the music store where I bought it, but then somebody else might be tempted to buy it. No; this disk is headed for the trash bin.

Not worth your money.......2006-05-14

Simply put, this album corrupts Howard Shore's music in the same way the ring tried to corrupt Frodo. The more you listen to it, the more you realize you should have bought the original soundtrack.

LOTR meets New Age.......2005-10-01

I wish I had read the other reviews before buying. 78 minutes of meandering through (and maiming) Howard Shore's fantastic work. No focus, no edge to the playing, themes apparently put together at random. The horns are poorly synthesized and sound pretty cheezy. Spend your money on the movie soundtrack. I wish I had.

Excellent.......2007-04-19

Seeing as the music was in my opinion one of the most powerful aspects of the movies (especially in the first one), fans of the movies will definitely want to have this album. If the films frightened you, the first eight tracks WILL frighten you, as the movies practically live on through these tracks, along with their MAJOR scary moments. Faint-hearted will definitely not want to play this music late at night before bedtime.

Why four stars instead of five? Because I believe the quality takes quite a dip towards the end. From track nine to twelve the music turns into a mash of remixed experiments, which I find simply not as good as the first eight tracks. It's a nice try and really not that bad, but it seriously doesn't fit on the CD and destroys the atmosphere of mystery, terror and fear which the previous tracks built up. However, the first few songs are definitely worth buying the CD by their own. Especially when the deeply rumbling cellos kick in during The Well or I'll Follow Your Voice... Gloom, terror, and pure fear in the form of music. A great effort by Hans Zimmer.

Creepy music or not...this piece of music is simply fantastic. One of my favorite musical scores. Highly recommend.

The Ring and the Ring Two.......2006-05-30

This sound track, admittedly, is good. But nothing more. The first couple of tracks have haunting or pulsing melodies, like the main theme of the series (the piano piece played in the credits of the first movie.) I also enjoyed in track three the sequence in which Rachel is driving on Moesko Island and an aerial sweeping view is shown from the Lighthouse to the Morgan's ranch. The tracks have many dark, richly beautiful tones that are both eerie and uplifting at once, such as Shelter Mountain, the Ferry, and I'll Follow Your Voice.
However, this soundtrack is flawed. First of all, the tracks are too long, and should have been divided up into smaller tracks, as many of the songs contain two or more totally different musical sequences that feel as if they should be different tracks. Secondly, the titles of the tracks are totally random. It's impossible to tell what's going on and when. Also, many of the themes have been shortened or edited, and obviously, some great pieces in the film were excluded from the soundtrack. Lastly, the last four tracks are akward, unnecessary and downright stupid techno remixes of some of the main themes that are damaging to the overall feel of the CD. Frankly, I don't know why they were made or included. They're simply awful.
Overall, however, this is a fine soundtrack. Not Zimmer's best, but still good. So, don't rush out, but buy it all the same.

Good CD. Much Missing........2006-02-11

For the most part, this is a great compilation of the score to The Ring and The Ring Two. Although it is a great buy, I must admit, I feel kind of robbed. The score is incomplete. There are many parts missing...for example...in the ending credits to The Ring, once the copyright and legal notices begin to scroll onto the screen, Samara sings the song she sung before her mother murdered her. Also, on the Extra Feature after the movie on the special edition VHS there are more pieces of score that were never included in either movies or the soundtrack. I really, truly love this CD, the key themes are really chilling and give me goosebumps when I listen to them (especially Track 8) I just feel that the composers would've done better by including a complete score to each movie...then again, I guess it's better to keep us guessing which pieces were included and which weren't.

I picked up these CDs, thinking that it was the orchestral soundtrack to LOTR. Not exactly.

Upon listening to the contents, I noted that the recording sounded distinctly different from the orchestral music of the films. After closer inspection of the package, I see now that it is "performed by Mask."

I have a feeling that "Mask" is basically one person armed with a battery of synthesizers. Listening to the CDs, I have this mental image of Yanni, outfitted in chain mail, giving a one-man keyboard concert from the highest level of Minas Tirith....

Then again, Howard Shore's music is so strong that the CD's are not an entirely disagreeable listening experience. I find myself actually liking them at times, not for the synthesizer timbre, which is sometimes painful, but because they actually sometimes closely evoke the orchestral score.

But really, if you want the LOTR soundtrack, get the orchestral recording, not this!

Another viewer incorrectly stated that this was played by a "medicore orchestra" this is not an orchestra at all, it is a guy and his synthesizers. (who apparently goes by the code name: MASK"

I would save the money you would spend on this and buy the 2 disc set from Silva with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nic Raine, that is of course assuming you already have the original soundtracks and are looking for it being played by a different orchestra.

A Truly Beautiful Rendition.......2005-04-25

I don't find it hard to recommend this to anyone, especially if you love Howard Shore's orchestral pieces and are looking for a new spin on the original. Some call it mediocre, but I call it wonderful. This is good for a Roleplaying soundtrack, and/or for listening to while reading the books. If you purchase this, you won't be dissapointed.

The best part of the whole movie at the end

Music from the score- NOT the soundtracks of the movies!.......2004-11-25

If you are expecting this to be the actual soundtracks from the three films then you will be disappointed. What you have here is music composed for the movie and performed and recorded by a mediocre orchestra. The music is competent enough, but it is slow and subdued compared to the films. You could call this the "easy listening" accompaniment to LOTR. You see, the film took music from this score and punched it up to get the thrilling and dramatic effect. You only get faint echoes of that here.

On the other hand, I cannot be too hard on this 3 CD album because it really is a decent symphony based on the Rings. The themes are well written and appropriate, and tell the whole epic in musical form. The actual playing is what I would expect from any medium sized, second rate, city symphony orchestra- competent, but nothing more. Oh yes, and the voice on "Into the West" is NOT Annie Lennox....

I will say that this makes for good reading music on a quiet evening.

Beware! This is NOT the official soundtrack!.......2006-07-12

I played my official soundtrack CDs to death so I was looking for a replacement. This is not the real thing. A lot of the tracks aren't even on these, and the order on the rest of them is all mixed up. Bad quality sound, without the energy and passion of the original -- sounds like elevator music. There are even misspellings throughout the playlists. It is not readily obvious to the buyer that it isn't what you think it is, until it arrives.

The Fellowship volume won't play on one of my hard drives at all; it plays, but fuzzily, on my laptop. I gave up before trying it in the CD player in my vehicle.

Not the original music.......2005-07-13

I was expecting this to be the music from the movies - it isn't. It is nicely done, but if you're expecting the same style and sound as from the movies, look elsewhere (this sounds more MIDI than orchestra).

Not to be missed!!!.......2007-04-30

This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.

This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.

If you are Space:1999 fan, it is a must have.

Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01

Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.

Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.

Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.

However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.

Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09

I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

Song: "Don't Blame Me" Music by Jimmy McHugh, Lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Performed by Leslie Uggams The Bad and the Beautiful had been set in Hollywood, but Two Weeks in Another Town moved the location to Rome, where washed-up actor Jack Andrus (Douglas) is summoned by his former director (Edward G. Robinson) to assist him on a cheapie for a foreign producer. From there Jack's "two weeks in another town" find him coming to terms with his past through a new web of personal relationships. Although not a sequel to The Bad and the Beautiful, composer David Raksin treated Two Weeks in Another Town as a virtual "part two," reusing several of his themes from the earlier picture, including, briefly, the main theme itself -- for a screening of The Bad and the Beautiful as one of the "former productions" by the new film's characters.
