In The Talented Mr. Ripley, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) becomes a master at taking on another's identity, pretty much the same thing he does on the film's soundtrack. Here, the actor does his best to croon like Chet Baker on "My Funny Valentine." Damon lacks the vocal cords to really pull the standard off, but it's still a noteworthy effort. The rest of this soundtrack is a mix of vintage jazz (exceptional cuts by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie), Sinead O'Connor's mystical "A Lullaby for Cain," and a handful of bop tunes played by the Guy Barker International Quintet (one tune even featuring folk legend John Martyn on vocals). As usual, Gabriel Yared's instrumental score is mysterious and reflective, with the occasional jazz element. Unfortunately, only on the track "Ripley" do we get a sense of the composer's varied talent. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Talented Indeed.......2005-12-15

I love this soundtrack, the music is so haunting and beautiful, especially O'Conners, Lullaby for Cain, it really sums up Ripley and it really stays with you. I think Gabrial Yared is one of the best composers working in the industy today, and Mingella is smart enough to use him on just about every movie he does, this soundtrack, did what all great movie soundtracks do, it fueled the movie and was absolutly perfect, even Damon's rendition of Chet Bakers, My Funny Valentine, was well done, I mean, Matt is no Chet Baker, but who is, verdad? I recommend this to anyone who appreciates a great soundtrack, believe me if you listen to it once you will come back to it again and again, it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Talented Mr. Ripley Soundtrack makes ripples.......2005-09-28

What a perfect soundtrack for a wildly entertaining movie. Matt Damon's rendition of MY FUNNY VALENTINE is sweet and alluring. Add a little Miles and a little Dizzy and you've got a hip mix.
Every cut on this CD is a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars One Song is Missing.......2005-08-10

I have to say that dispite the missing song this album is pure excellence. It has captured me and i've fallen like a dream into the deep meaning of tom's personality and sadness. I belive that's what make a soundtrack great. The only song they forgot was the song that tom was singing to in the mirror while prancing around in Dickie's clothes. It is a very old but beautiful song by Bing Crosby called "May I" It's a rare, hard to find song amongst a zillion cd's by Crosby. The only cd you'll find it on is:Here lies Love(1992 cd). It is really a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Tu Vuo' Fa l'Americano.......2004-06-28

Great soundtrack. Mix of jazz and Gabriel Yared's score music. Featuring giants of bop and jazz music: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Guy Barker. But there's no Chet Baker. Instead of him there's Chet-wanna-be version of My Funny Valentine performed by Matt Damon & Guy Barker International Quintet. Tu Vuo' Fa l'Americano is performed by Matt Damon, Jude Law, Fiorello & Guy Barker International Quintet. Recorded a year before Brian Setzer Orchestra's version!! Gabriel Yared's score is beautiful too.

5 out of 5 stars 'Matches the perplexing personality of the title character.......2004-06-26

Most of the earlier reviewers have shared my sentiments and praise for this most eclectic blend of jazz, classical, and traditional movie scoring. It captures the many moods of "Tom Ripley," one of literature's most captivating and complex characters.

The only drawback, if any, is the fact that the selections do not appear in sequential order from the film. That, however, does not sully their effectiveness, providing the listener with an enjoyable and quite diverse listening experience.
