Everything about crypt crawler Lara Croft is fake: her boobs, her archaeological background, her identity. The ass-kickin' chick is a game boy's dream come to life, so it's fitting that the video hottie should get an equally synthetic soundtrack in time for her big-screen debut. U2 reel out the album's strongest track, a glossy remix of "Elevation" that skids all over glam-rock terrain and is just sexy enough to make it work as a single (as well as a scene-stealing video featuring Tomb Raider star Angelina Jolie). Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor works himself into a fit on the grinding "Deep," but his tirade sounds outdated with its dumb lyrics and clunky, hookless programming. Speaking of computer blues, Groove Armada's wordless snoozer "Edge Hill" is about as far from shakin' that ass as a dance act can get. Thankfully, club reliables like the Chemical Brothers and Moby can still get it done; the former brings out the funk with a writhing dance tune that's as tireless as the film's heroine, while the latter's fuzzed-out big beats explode into a giddy freak-out that helps tighten up the album's blah midsection. Oddly, the only ladies in the house, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot and young 'un Nelly Furtado, are the ones who get Lara Croft's modus operandi right; no matter how perfect she may be, she still needs to get her freak on. --Kristy Martin

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Party Album!.......2005-08-02

This CD is played nearly every single weekend and we're still not sick of it! All the songs are just awesome, Excellent for dancing and energizing a dead party!

5 out of 5 stars My two cents.......2005-05-07

Great soundtrack overall and individually. I think you all need to just stop being so picky about music. Who cares if it sounds the same as a song on a previous album? A good song is a good song. Get over it. :)

1. U2 - Elevation: Instant classic. Great song, will stay in your head for weeks and make you think you can sing.
2. Nine Inch Nails - Deep: A good song. Very deep lyrics, if you forgive the pun.
3. The Chemical Brothers - Galaxy Bounce: What's there to say? A great song, catchy and carrying.
4. Missy Elliot ft. Nelly Futado - Get Ur Freak on: Not a bad song in any way. It's a rap song that I can actually stand, which is saying alot. A nice new kind of voice adds to the song.
5. Outkast - Speedballin': Again, a rap song I can stand. Good beat and sound to it.
6. Moby - Ain't Never Learned: Moby never fails to deliver, and this is no exception. Flowing, changing, and with great substance.
7. BT - The Revolution: A bit of an odd experience, like listening to a preacher during a rave party. It ends up working together somehow, making a good song.
8. Delerium ft Aude - Terra Firma(Lara's Mix): Very, very good song. It definately has Lara's personality, you can just picture yourself in the back of her mansion watching her run the course and shoot the butler.
9. Basement Jaxx - Where's Your Head At: One line is all it takes. Good song, the returning melody of the main line pulls the beat together around the verse in an energizing away.
10. Fatboy Slim ft Bootsy Collins - Illuminati: Nice song, good guitaring. Could do without the woozy-sounding guy and his improper grammar, but it kind of adds to it.
11. Fluke - Absurd(Whitewash Edit): Look up the lyrics for this song sometime. I did, and almost spilled a TV dinner over myself. This song is great, innovative and sounds good.
12. Leftfield - Song of Life: Good combination of soft and tech here, overall good song.
13. Groove Armada - Edge Hill: This song is definately feelin' the groove thing. Relaxing or energizing depending on how you want it, an anytime song.
14. Bosco - Satellite: Words cannot express my love for this song. The melody and beat and everything is really good, but what really makes it for me is the vocals. Definately a must-hear.
15. Oxide & Neutrino - Devil's Nightmare: Nice variety in this song. It definately takes you through the storyline of the Tomb Raider movie, and makes a good ender.

1 out of 5 stars for the collectors.......2005-04-30

my review is written here only for seekers of obscure nine inch nails songs. for a full review of the soundtrack in its entirety read elsewhere-there are many other reviews.
i have all 19 halos, and exclusive and unreleased remixes and demos, and i love all of it, including the entirety of the fragile, fixed, perfect drug versions, still, further down the spiral v1 and v2, the deluxe edition of the downward spiral, on and on, everything....
except deep.
deep is truly the only nine inch nails song not worth having.
painfully uninspired and recycled, musically, lyrically, and visually (the video was an embarassment- again, the only one in a catalogue of otherwise disturbing, beautiful brilliance), DEEP is a song and phase trent himself has admitted to wishing to forget entirely.
my advice: take it as a mark that he is, after all, human, but leave it here on the tomb raider soundtrack, unpaid for, for it will never show up on an official halo as burn (originally for natural born killers), dead souls (joy division cover originally for the crow), and the perfect drug (originally for lost highway) all have in time (the former two on halo 8 DE and the latter on halos 11, 12, and 15 in extended form).

2 out of 5 stars Not very good.......2005-01-25

1. Good, the best here. 5/5
2. Meh-too weirdishly rocky/punky/technoey. (2/5)
3. Same as #2.
4. .........wtf is this? Nelly Furtado's attempts at rapping are embarrassing and painful to the eardrums. God, she sounds SO weird. Leave the rapping to the rappers, honey. I swear to God....when will this girl go away? She's a one-hit wonder, just like Natalie Imbruglia. If they had used the original with just Missy, it would have been great. But with Furtado's fumbling raps, this track just makes me laugh. (0/5)
5. It starts out excellent, but then gets a little too frenzied. (4/5)
6. O.......kay. (2/5)
7. Not too bad. Sorta fun. *shrug* (3/5)
8. O_o very very weird. It sounds like a bunch of priests chanting. (0/5)
The rest of it is well just average. Way too much grunge rock and techno fizzles. This soundtrack has two good songs, a large handful of horrible songs and a few so-so ones.

1 out of 5 stars This "compliation" is decent.......2004-07-27

however despite what Amazon reviewer Kristy Martin may believe, Ms Croft does not need to get her freak on. Wow. I guess hip hop can do no wrong. In a soundtrack which is filled with apporpriate trax to supplement the film, here comes another fanboy/girl of hip hop's hopele$$$ley misplaced garbage. Thank you Kristy for proving to be yet another white suburban supporter of the most mass marketed crap to come along. (Missy)This song is soo done it's practically taboo to listen too. And Outkast? Puhf_ckingleez. These clowns sold out a long long time ago.

5 out of 5 stars The Song At The Mall.......2005-08-02

I, too wanted to know what that beautiful background song was at the Mall, lol. It's called 'Tears From The Moon' and it's on this CD, so if you want that particular version of that song, you're in luck!:)

3 out of 5 stars Could have been more like the first. No NIN's :(.......2004-04-01

I loved the first tomb raider cd. Though I was alittle disapointed when I heard this one. There are 5-6 good songs and the rest are a fly bye. Their first one had more hard pounding techno and the songs were also really good. But this one doesn't seem as energetic. It's still good, but compared to the last one, they could of put better songs in it. But if your a fan of techno and alternative than I would buy it. SO GO GET IT.

4 out of 5 stars song at the mall?.......2003-12-31

All I would like to know right now is the name and/ or artist of the song that was played at the high rise shopping mall in China.

4 out of 5 stars The Album That Rocks the Cradle (of Life).......2003-09-28

I obtained this album in the hopes that it would be like its predecessor, which I enjoyed thouroughly. I was surprised to find more rock songs on this album, but I grew to like it just as much:

-"Heart Go Faster" by the Davey Brothers. A nice rock song with a solid melody and beat. A good start, somewhat reminiscent of U2's "Elevation."

-"The Only Way (Is the Wrong Way)" by Filter. A softer rock song that's even more reminiscent of a U2 song.

-"Bad Girl" by Alexandra Slate. Another rock song with a more blah-ish melody. Not bad, but not particuarly good either.

-"Satellite (Oakenfold Remix)" by POD. Part rap, part techno, with a good beat. It's cool.

-"The Last High" by the Dandy Warhols. Soft alternative rock song that's certainly worth listening to.

-"Time" by Saliva. My personal favorite of the album. This hard rock song has a great melody, great lyrics, and a great sound overall. Awesome!!!

-"Leave You Far Behind" by Lunatic Calm. A chaotic heavy-techno track. I think it's cool.

-"Jam for the Ladies (Jason Nevins Remix)" by Moby. A hefty trance track, with some rap involved. Another good Moby track!

-"Starting Over" by the Crystal Method. Softer techno track with some string instruments, guitar, and disjointed vocals.

-"You Can't Look Away" by Sloth. It's back to hard rock with this adequate song.

-"I Hate This" by Nadirah 'Nadz' Seid. A rap song with synthesized instruments. Lyrics may be offensive to some, with its talk of violence and rage. Otherwise, it's good.

-"Reason is Treason" by Kasabian. Rock song with solid beat and slightly overdriven vocals. Another good track.

-"Into Hell Again" by 3rd Strike. Hard rock song, borderlining metal. It's alright.

-"Tears From the Moon" by Conjure One feat. Sinead O'Connor. Soft track between techno and chill-out, with powerful lyrics.

-"Flight to Freedom" by David A. Stewart. Instrumental guitar track without a beat or apparent melody. I'm not too impressed by it.

-"Pandora's Box" by Alan Silvestri. A piece of the film's score. It's not dramatic or hard, but it still carries a sentimental note in it. A pleseant end to the album.

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2003-05-21

This soundtrack really grew on me. After the first listen I thought it was lacking, but after 2-3 hearings, I discovered bits and pieces that are very nice and unique, and very pretty adding new dimention to the score.
it's a cool soundtrack,worth keeping.

2 out of 5 stars Put this one in the tomb.......2002-12-17

Composers that were first signed on to do the score were John Powell, video game composer Nathan McCree, and Michael Kamen. As the premiere got closer, Kamen got off the project and that left someone to compose the music for the score in 10 days! That person is Graeme Revell. Since only 10 days was the time needed to write the music, Revell used mainly electronics with a little bit of orchestra. The result: nothing even remotely exciting. This is not Revell's fault though as he even said in an interview that this score disappointed him, as he felt it did not represent his best work. I definitely agree with him. The music itself is mainly annoying electronic pulses with orchestral and choral effects. "Main Title" is one of the best cues on the album, with a fully orchestral theme for strings and piano. Most of the remainder of the tracks consist of pulse pounding electronics. Tracks like "Home Invasion", "Lara Battles the Stone Monkeys", "Angkor Wat", and "The Letter" consist of techno beat rhythms which give you a headache very fast. Another track that I wish we could hear more of is "The Planetary Alignment" as it contains great choral and orchestral elements in it. Overall, unless you like techno pounding electronic music, I suggest that you stay away from this score and go for something better. A good effort by Revell given the time constraints, but a disappointed listenings worth.

3 out of 5 stars A quick owner's review of Alan Silvestri's score........2007-07-02

Alan Silvestri needs no introduction. As one of the best film composers in the business over the last 20+ years, he certainly knows what goes into a great score. After buying Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life I fell in love with the adventurous main theme.......but that's just about the ONLY thing you get to hear on the CD! It seemed like Alan had very little time to compose the score and the result was a main theme repeated so many times that listening to it becomes less and less enjoyable. The track titled "Pandora's Box", however, was excellent. Different from the other music heard on the CD, Pandora's Box was a somber, yet beautiful piece heard near the end of the film. In my opinion, the CD is worth buying just for that track (not to mention the main theme). Is it one of Silvestri's best scores? Nope, but any Silvestri fan probably wouldn't mind buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Not-So-Great Movie; EXCELLENT SOUNDTRACK! Nab it!.......2005-08-11

(...)

This soundtrack is one of Silvestri's best to date. It is full of emotion, action, and wonderful ochestral themes. From the asian flutes from the movie's Chinese scenes, to the techno beats of the action sequences, to the melodic melancholy of the BEST track "Pandora's Box," this CD is worth every penny.

In my opinion, it trumps even the latter two Lord of the Rings scores (both of which only shone on the Rohirrim tracks; Fellowship was a different story).

No matter what your qualms are regarding the Lara Croft franchise, or the films, this score is a RARE GEM! Nab it if you see it! We searched through TWELVE STORES to finally nab it at a Border's booksellers (the third we searched in Chicago).

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Best Soundtrack I Ever Herd!.......2004-10-20

4 out of 5 stars Craig Armstrong got left behind.......2004-02-09

This is one of Alan Silvestri's best action movie scores to date. It is loaded with percussion and some beautiful themes. However, for those of you who are dissapointed about the music from the Lab Scene, I know what the story is on that. That music was not composed by Alan Silvestri, it was composed by another film composer by the name of Craig Armstrong. Craig has done scoring for such movies as "Kiss Of The Dragon" and "Plunkett & Mclaine". Craig's film scores are rarely ever released and when they are, they are even harder to get a hold of(trust me I know from experience). So unfortunately, as awesome as the TR2 Lab Scene music sounded, it will probably never see the light of day on a CD. I have even tried to find it by using download programs and I was unsuccessful. Although this is a great silvestri film score, for those of us who loved the Lab scene music, we will probably only ever hear it in the movie itself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent soundtrack.......2004-01-31

The cradle of life is a fantastic masterpiece of original motion picture soundtracks. This cd has everything that most soundtrack lovers would like. Most noteable on this cd is the track "Pandora's Box". This song has so many emotions its hard to explain. This track will leave you breathless because of its emotion. I recommend this cd for all people who love soundtracks.

4 out of 5 stars Tomb Raider Rocks!.......2001-07-01

If you like nine inch nails and other heavy beat songs and artists this is the soundtrack for you. Besides having U2 and Missy Elliot this soundtrack has that heart pumping rhythm that keeps you going, especially in the morning. I really enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars Hollywood Meets Electronica again..........2001-06-28

(Real Rating 3.5 Stars, but since I can't give 1/2 stars 4 will do.) I enjoyed the soundtrack for a variety of reasons. Not the least of which is the collection of several great electronic artists. I would recommend this album to those whom like the sound style created by the likes of BT, Moby & Chemical Brothers. Good high-energy music. This is not to discount the other artists on the album (U2, NIN, Outkast, Etc.). Their songs were well chosen for this album.
