5 out of 5 stars An Adult Love Story.......2007-05-13

OK, it is 40 years old, but still the only real adult movie love story. Caught it in a Cinema in Tottenham Court Road, London with new girl friend in 1970. Wow. We loved it. (Sequal not so good by the way). The original has it all, friends, love , cars, kids, France, lots of silences, caring, sadness and JOY.

5 out of 5 stars The real thing!.......2007-05-12

This is the REAL soundtrack from the movie, in French, just as the movie was. I've been searching for this for years, and it's just as lush, romantic and wonderful as it was all those millenia ago when I was in school!

5 out of 5 stars Once upon a time.......2007-03-24

After reading the reviews lamenting the price of the Amazon import, I am puzzled why no one has mentioned the double CD of the "A Man and a Woman" soundtrack (in the original French) along with the execrable "Live For Life." I bought it at Barnes and Noble for $20 if memory serves. Throw out the second half and enjoy "Samba Sarava" and everything else, even if you can't speak French, and remember a 40-year-old love.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best jazz scores of the 20th Century.......2007-02-10

Man, I still play this gorgeous, sentimental score frequently, as I absorbed it when I was an odd toddler stuck in the woods with a bunch of hicks listening to Porter Wagoner.

WHY IS THIS OUT OF PRINT IN AMERICA? WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY COUNTRY? IS THERE NO RESPECT ANYMORE FOR THESE BEAN COUNTER RECORD BUSINESS HUCKSTERS FOR BEAUTY OR POSTERITY?

Highlights: Samba Saravah, Stronger Than Us (the instrumental version), and Nicole Croiselle singing "Today's It's You."

The United Artists LP released in 1967 is the real thing. I dont have problems with the english language version, except the english is heavily accented. The english lyrics are actually quite fitting, but the French is superior.

5 out of 5 stars Like stepping back in time!.......2006-07-05

This is the original motion picture soundtrack that won the grand prize in 1966 at the Cannes Film Festival. I saw this movie in 1968 and I still have the record album! (Who can part with great music and French besides???)I am so happy to have this CD that I can play in my car and elsewhere as I no longer possess a turntable for the LP. For me it was well worth the extra money.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2006-07-13

This music is simply breathtaking. Just especially beautiful. I have both this version, the two-CD complete version, and the English. The two-CD set (I think 52 tracks) is the best. This is second best. The music in this abridged CD is not presented in chronological order, however, and sometimes, due to this and the missing tracks, there is something lacking. However, it's just gorgeous music.

The acoustics are amazing. I'm not sure if this is really noticeable unless you hear it immediately before or after the English version. The cast is absolutely amazing. There is so much emotion in their voices.

I'm surprised there is so little about Richard Cocciante, the composer. This music is some of the best I've heard. I would have thought there was an abundance of music written by Richard Cocciante that I haven't heard. From what I can find out online, there isn't. This is just a masterpiece.

There are many reviewers who mention the translation issue. If you think of this as a popular musical, I can see that the translation may be an issue. However, think of it as an opera-- which it also is (not in the classical sense). We don't concern ourselves with the translation of La Traviata, La Boheme. Same with this. . . just enjoy the music.

If you can possibly find the 2 CD complete set (sometimes available for download elsewhere, find it before purchasing this. But, if you can't find it, get this. Also, as a side note. . . the DVD has the entire libretto included and offers English subtitles.

5 out of 5 stars i would give this musical more stars if i could.......2006-05-07

i am so in love with this musical. it was the first french musical i'd ever seen. my french teacher showed it to the whole class after we had translated every single song into english. the hard work definitely paid off. the musical was amazing. i immediately fell in love and became obsessed. i couldn't stop listening to the CD. i love garou and bruno pelletier. they're both very talented, along with everyone else in the musical.

i really want to buy the two-disc CD, but i can't find it. does anyone know where i can buy it?

5 out of 5 stars I would. . ........2006-01-26

. . . highly recommend this album. the songs are beautiful and the singers seem to carry over the emotions that the characters feel to the listener. AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars A journey with Esmeralda.......2006-01-19

When I first saw the perfomance of Notre Dame de Paris by original francophone troupe of singers for the first time, right away I fell in love with the music of Riccardo Cocciante and the gorgeous voices of the singers.

Being lucky to be able to understand the lyrics, I was pleasantly surprised by the awesome lyrics of Luc Plamondon, even if the lyrics are not necessary to understand the mood and the emotions that the songs transmit, knowing the words helps you to completely immerse into the play and feel the same emotions that the play characters, to live the story yourself.

With "Bohemienne" we see a clear picture of a young gypsy girl wandering in the mountains and valleys of Andalusia, playful and free, a little sad because she lives only for the present, every tomorrow is a new mystery, a new journey.

"Belle" depicts a stunning young woman, with sensual moves and penetrating eyes, dancing on the square while all the men are ready to do anything to be with her.

"Tu va me detruire" demonstrates the unconrolled desire of the priest towards Esmeralda, the man who dedicated all his life to sience and religion who now is ready to surpass all his beliefs, descend to hell only if she would be his. While he is discovering his dark side, Esmeralda falls in love with a beau captaine, Phoebus, who is betraying his fiancée with her.

Meanwhile his fiancée Fleur de Lys is reflecting on how to get her loved one back : in "La monture" she makes plan of vegeance to Esmeralda, she is calling her a witch, the hatred and jelousy are overtaking her while she says to Phoebus "I will come back to you only if Esmeralda will be executed ".

As the story ends the spectator/listener is taken over by
the desperation of innocent and proud Esmeralda before being executed, the depth and the eternity of Quasimodo's feelings.

I really love all the singers and ever since I have Notre Dame de Paris I don't miss an album by any of the singers from the musical. I have discovered for myself such great artists as Garou, Bruno Pelletier, Patrick Fiori.

It's a must for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Notre Dame de Paris.......2005-09-25

Excellent CD if you want to listen to opera in short. However, if you are really interested, it's better to buy a 2-disc edition or a DVD to enjoy this wonderful music in full.

Cable has done some wonderful things for American television--challenging dramas that are too extreme for the networks get made, actors get to stretch their talents, and there's always South Park. But cable's also responsible for constant reruns of Z-grade movies, has-been and never-was stars, and, er, South Park. Striding the fine line is La Femme Nikita, a hit on the USA network, that wants to play in the big leagues (The X-Files, Ally McBeal, Melrose Place) by releasing its own soundtrack. Unfortunately, most of the acts here are either has-beens or never-weres, and few of the more familiar names stretch out to do anything truly interesting or new (even Mark Snow's theme pales in comparison to the one he did for The X-Files). Morphine are as moodily moving as ever, Fluke and Keoki contribute nice dance-floor numbers, and Curve's "Chinese Burn" rocks as hard as it did the first time it was released--on their Come Clean album. --Randy Silver

    5 out of 5 stars quite pleased.......2007-07-13

As an avid enjoyer of Le Femme Nikita I was very pleased with the second series cod set. Only one CD was a bit unviewable (partially) but overall I was pleased. I find it hard to complain about such an exciting and plot twisting series such as Nikita. I love it. I only wish it would have continued. I see Alias has tried to capture the same kind of audience but it just does not come close..No one can compare to Peta Wilson and no one is as unscrupulous as Section One.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Soundtrack.......2007-04-03

I love the show. And I love the soundtrack. It is the heart of the show. I just wish there was more music from the show.

    4 out of 5 stars La Fab.......2007-01-11

Any fan will love this cd. It leaves you wanting more. More music from the show. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that they stopped at one cd. The same thing with the show. They stopped at 5 seasons.

4 out of 5 stars La Femme Nikita: Music From The Television Series.......2007-01-07

I love all the songs, but it could be more perfect if every song wherein Nikita and Michael have some moments together be included, especially the one when they vaulted out from Section I.

What a crowning achievement to bring "Reel Love: The Cinematic Romance Album", released by Silva America and featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ conductors are Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and David Temple director of the chorus ~ one can only expect the highest quality of performances and quench the thirst of all "film-score-buffs".

Sit back and unleash the first disc with composers taking each film score cue in alphabeltical order:

5 out of 5 stars great music for driving.......2002-01-19

Eric Serra is at his best with this pounding, exciting soundtrack from the original motion picture. The mixture of deep bass, offbeat guitar chords and beautiful alto sax of Gilbert Dall'Anese makes this a great listen for writing, driving, or activities where you need some adrenalin flowing!

    4 out of 5 stars Metallic!.......2001-06-28

For me, this movie and its soundtrack constitute the highlight of the partnership between director Luc Besson and composer Eric Serra -- a collaboration that covers 'Subway', 'The Fifth Element' and 'Big Blue', amongst others. 'Nikita' seemed so perfect to me that I couldn't understand why Hollywood chose to do a re-make so quickly.

The sleevenotes on my CD give little away, besides saying that the music is performed by the mysterious RXRA, presumably a Parisian studio band. The whole soundtrack has a metallic, late 80s feel to it. There are Lyle Mays-like synthesizer flutters here and there, but it otherwise seems wonderfully disconnected from the rest of the world, in the way that so much French music is.

Inevitably the best tracks are based on the Nikita love theme: 'Fancy Face' (track #9) and 'The Free Side' (track #13). The worst track is clearly the last one -- it was a serious misjudgement by Serra to put himself forward as the singer!

I have no idea how the soundtrack stands up on its own for someone who hasn't seen the movie. All I can say is go and see it -- you won't be disappointed, and you can practice your French at the same time!

5 out of 5 stars La Femme Fatale..........2000-01-22

This is one Eric Serra soundtrack in which each track not only fits the scenes in the film perfectly but also evoke images of rich visuals and emotions for the listener. The standout tracks for this imagery are as follows:

    Rico's Suicide Gang - Brooding start-up, rock-like rebellious sound

    Failed Escape- Playful, yet, menacing

Learning Time- Passing of time towards a positive direction.

A Smile- laid back groove that really symbolizes Nikita's painful soul and struggle in trying to muster a smile as if to say, "What do I have to smile about ! " or " I have nothing to smile or laugh about in my life !"

First Night Out- very seductive and tantalizing. This is Nikita's first glimpse of the outside world in three years since joining the government. She's like a cat discovering new territoy ; Curious, yet cautious.

NPOKMOP (instrumental for Dark Side of Time)- I still don't know what NPOKMOP stands for- Anyway, it's a perfectly written dark and sinister piece for the assignment/test that will make Nikita a full legitimate government assassin ! The heavy breathing and hissing sound effects are very creepy and ominous.

Another positive is that this soundtrack by Serra is not thematically confusing as the one to The Fifth Element ( talk about a potporri of music genres)...

5 out of 5 stars As Exciting And Thrilling As The Movie!.......1999-10-11

"La Femme Nikita" is an excellent film, and the music makes it an even better film. Eric Serra is a wonderful composer who knows how to make great sounds. Here we have some great orchestral music and eletronic music as well. In fact, I could call Eric Serra, a genius! The music flows with the action, making it more entertaining. Emotions of excitement and deepness are felt all throughout this wonderous score. The best one is "The Dark Side Of Time," that is just a great, great song. "La Femme Nikita" is a great film made better by a great score.

This is one of the greatest instrumental talents I've heard in years. This cd has some of my all-time favorite movie tunes including 'Moon River', 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', and a very beautiful version of 'My Heart Will Go On'. This is the actual band that played in the 1997 movie Titanic and I'm truly thankful that they made this recording for everyone to enjoy. I'll cherish it for years to come. Thank you!

This CD contains many familiar music from films and the performance of the musicians is very good particularly track 16. I also find the music very relax and enjoyable and can bring the memory of those films if one has ever seen them.

5 out of 5 stars "Elmer Bernstein conducts film scores of Bernard Herrmann".......2004-10-28

Milan Records presents Elmer Bernstein conducting The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with this digitally remastered "Bernard Herrmann Film Scores ", from "CITIZEN KANE" [1942], "THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER" [1942], "THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH" [1956], "PSYCHO" [1959], "THE WRONG MAN" [1957], "VERTIGO" [1958], "NORTH BY NORTHWEST" [1959], "THE BRIDE WORE BLACK" [1967], "FAHRENHEIT 451" [1966], "TAXI DRIVER" [1973]...and the final track is "BERNARD HERRMANN ON FILM MUSIC" [recorded early 1970s]...which clearly states why music is an additional character to any film, without it the film would be incomplete...during the silent film era, the piano player kept the audience tuned into what was happening, whether it was a love scene or danger lurking around every corner.

Herrmann completely mesmerizes us with his themes, blending variations with eloquent and subtle cues...depicting each character in the film, and fine tuned to the story-line ~ he was a genius and knew his craft well...relies heavily on strings, usually with lyrical solos for the winds...absolute in capturing the essence of each scene, musically letting the audience in through his score ~ the result is colors come shining through with wonderful arrangements...many of the classic film scores have become cult favorites among "film-score-buffs" like me and collectors alike.

Each film score is superb and very strong...the balance of the instruments and experimental touches of Bernard Herrmann are all just brilliant ~ working with directors like Welles, Dieterle, Hitchcock, Truffaut and Scorsese all were very conscious of classic film music and and Herrmann's cues really came through...each outing was nothing less than a bravo performance...those who ignored Herrmann during his career, really missed out...cause all the diehard collectors of film music knew he was a WINNER! ~ Bernard Herrmann [1911-1975].

5 out of 5 stars Music like this is hard to come by.......2002-10-29

I don't normally write reviews for CD's. I usually stick to books, however, I have to make an exception for Cirque Du Soliel.

My dance teacher had first used the song Mystere for one of her performances and ever since then, I have been hooked on their music. I'm sad to see Rene Dupere leave Cirque. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many other musicians and composers, Rene is one of the best living composers. This album is perhaps a collection of his greatest peices. It does have one piece from Benoit Jutras but in my opinion, it doesn't match quite the level that Rene's are at.

If you are interested in Cirque's music, I think this CD would be the way to go.

    4 out of 5 stars A good album.......2001-06-01

This is a good way to start your Cirque Du Soleil music collection. Although it has some old music, it is still a good album.

    3 out of 5 stars A smattering of Cirque.......2001-05-01

Cirque de Soleil's colelction is in affect a best of CD, but it is hardly that. Certainly the pieces on this disc are the most memorable of each show, they seem to lack something. this is because Cirque de Soleil is an experience, each song on an album influences another, they must be listened to in order to truly experience them. The songs on this album aren't bad, in fact, they are excellent, but they aren't quite as good as if one were to purchase the albums tehy are taken from and listen to the whole album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Cirque du Soleil ~ Fantastique, Mysterious, Addictive.... ~.......2000-11-18

I bought this CD just last night. When I was little, I remember seeing Le Cirque Reinvente on television. I loved it so - the music, the performances - but I didn't know it's name, what it was called. I forgot about it for a time, seeing snippets of it whenever I just barely caught the end credits while surfing the channels. Forgot about it again and then the yearning to hear that distant yet familiar music came back and I did some research, finally discovering what the show was after so many years: Cirque du Soleil! The rest is history - I got hooked instantly and this is my first CD of the music. I wanted to know what the music was like before I bought it so I listened to sound samples from Amazon of the CDs and then decided to buy Collection at my music store. I listened to it last night, am listening to it now as I write this and here are my detailed impressions... You put the CD in and relax... The first sounds are those of a solitary basoon over " Ouveture " from the excellent "Le Cirque Reinvente." The drums pick up and it turns into a majestic melody of strength, dignity, and lingering of what's to come; it gave me spine tingles the moment I heard it! " Egypte " begins, seducingly quiet and calm and working into the delvement of the Egyptian gods and goddesses that rule this mysterious ancient land. The main voice could be a goddess herself, her voice is sweet and clear as she sings the primary lyrics of the song coyly, sure of herself, gently.

"Kumbalawe" is very pretty, carefree and reminded me strangely of 'haps a family of lions relaxing in the grassy savannah awaiting sleep to overtake them underneath the midday sun. It was a very good piece but one though I didn't particularily care for though you might be a different case altogether. "Suite Chinoise" starts as if a theme for royalty and if that was Dupere's mark he DID hit it. Another spine-tingler that turns into a loving, warm melody. Falling rain, then, and a worn, wood flute resounds through the rain forest. All of it collides to form a lovely piece that envelopes so many grand emotions in but only 10 minutes of sheer joy. " Querer" is passionate and sounds to me as being a very nice love song though not in my tastes. "Entracte" I was doubtful at the beginning but it wouldn't let me not like it - it took my chin in it's hand and made me look at it long and clear, to listen to it just for a few seconds more And there it was. I heard the drums kick in and the amazing melody begin in full throttle, pulsing with fun and energy and good humour. You could almost see the act going on in the stage of your mind. "Pokinai" was undescribably gorgeous! It reminded me of a lady hanging on the trapeze with her legs in almost completely darkness as a curled up ball and then unfolding very beautifully, silver rain falling all around her. Slowly, she begins to move and discover hands and feet. That innocence and curiousity gives way slightly to her complete joy that she's ALIVE! Then a young man appears and she discovers young love, they doing various moves in the air.... These are the impressions I get when I listen to this song. "Alegria" was impressive music-wise as well as impressive in vocal. The main voice has a strong, sultry voice that seems to have every possible element in perfect feminity. Even though it probably wasn't meant as a love song, it comes across as such and I have no hesitation in saying it was a flawless piece that reminded me of tan-shaded shadows floating over two lovers... "Kalimando" starts camly with natural sounds taking the spotlight, birds singing, the light and gentle strains of water. It was a ground-centring piece after all the energy and fast-paced pieces before it. The lyrics almost seem to say in their foreign, mysterious tongue, " Time to rest." "Grosse Femme" was a lively melody that sounded a bit like a carousel-horse tune that if you play really loud *grin* it sounds as if you are truly on a merry-go-round at a circus during the night, the cool air swirling around you like mist...

So, in conclusion of my journey into Cirque du Soleil, I have gone into ectasy and back again. I have been happy, sad, nostalgic, dignified, mysterious, and a whole lot more in the expanse of this one CD. If that isn't magic, nothing is.

    4 out of 5 stars Correction.......1999-07-22

just wanted to fix a slip in my review- I said Kalandero is in Mystere- it is actually in Alegria. When I said Mystere I was thinking of the song Birimbau- both are track 3 on their respective CDs.
