Body Heat (1998 Re-recording of 1981 Film) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In 1981 Lawrence Kasdan's erotic murder yarn won over many viewers with its mood of faux film noir. Much credit for that aura of sensuality and danger goes to John Barry's use of sultry jazz flavorings over a rich orchestra to convey that crucial, albeit clammy, sense of sophistication and doom. This near carbon copy of the original soundtrack may allow listeners to suspend disbelief at times, but one senses that dreary blurring of instruments usually associated with many live-concert-performance recordings. Instead of sultry smoke, listeners may be frustrated to find their cinema memories lost in a sonic fog that a horny saxophone cannot clear. --Joseph Lanza

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Not his usual stuff.......2007-04-18
Back in the 70's, this was definitely a giant step for QJ, moving from his Jazz sound to the heart of commercial Soul; and who knows or feel music better than QJ? The result is a soul album yet based from all the Jazz sound QJ feels.
Released in 1974, this album did not age a single day; on the contrary, in today's fast life, if you are not in a Jazzy mood nor in the R&B or soul mood, this album would perfectly fit on your CD player, because it is not really Jazz, Soul or R&B, yet it has all these sounds well mixed and tuned into each other.
Last and not least, if you enjoy this album, make sure to check the followings:
The Brothers Johnson; Look out for # 1 (produced and arranged a year later by Mr. Jones with the same feel as `Body heat")
War: the world is a ghetto
Roy Ayers: Mystic Voyage
Enjoy
Superb.......2006-02-21
Quincy Jones translates to "genius" in my opinion. A perfect example of how Jones is a revolutionary in the music industry. From seductive jazz-pop in "Body Heat" to moody conscience songs in "Everything Must Change" to funky jazz in "One Track Mind" (my favorite), this album ranks among Quincy's best, and that's a tough goal to achieve.
Quincy At A Potent Juncture.......2005-07-20
It has taken me a very long time to fully appreciate how wonderful this album is!In the early 1970's Quincy Jones was beginning to retool his sound to accomadate more rhythmic elements replacing his swinging big band sound. And on 'Body Heat' he completed his conversion.Plain and simple. No particular song stands out but it's certainly the marking of a new and funkier era in Q's sound!
Beautiful vocals & fine arrangements..........2003-07-22
This whole album always sounded like a conceptual soundtrack or score for a stage production. I always visualised Arthur Murray or Martha Graham arranging a dance project to go with this album. The arrangements are superb on every track...the lyrics of the songs are beautifully phrased. I first heard this album back in 1976 and was impressed by the tremendously emotional vocals of Bernard Ighner on the track "Everything Must Change' (very much like Billy Eckstines baritone voice). The vocals on this song give way to a hauntingly clandestine mute trumpet solo, a la Miles Davis. The result is an ultimately 'cool' laidback idyllic journey which carries you away from all your troubles! The song "Just a Man" is very similar in it's effect. This song is strongly gospel inflected with some stunning harmonies.
This c.d has the best ever version of this song.(I realise that George Benson later covered the song as did Randy Crawford.) The other track that blew me away was the stunning version of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven"...Minnie Riperton was at her best on this track. (her untimely death still leaves a huge void in the music world ). The arrangements ,again, are wonderful especially on the Benny Golson song "Along came Betty"
All in all this c.d . has everything on it, from low down 'n' dirty funk( as on "Boogie Joe, The Grinder") to cool soulful jazz and even when I play it today I find it still hasn't lost any of its excitement or feeling from 1974!
It is , however, a very short recording but as they say, good things do come in small packages!
Fan Forever!.......2002-05-24
I had this 'album' years ago during college. I have always been a 'Q' fan, and always will be. This particular selection is Q at his best. The selections show his range of talent and breadth of expressions, from quiet and melodic(Everyting Must Change), to thumping and erotic(Body Heat). I highly recommend this for people that may be new to Quincy and want to know why Quincy Jones is so revered in the music world.

Close, But No Cigar... (Maybe a Cigarette, Actually).......2006-04-09
John Barry's pristine rendition of this classic soundtrack was released on vinyl via indie label Southern Cross Records, back in the early Eighties. (Good luck finding THAT version.) Sadly, it has never been re-released in any format, let alone CD. So here's Joel McNeely's version with the LSO on Varese Sarabande, and you know what? You could do MUCH, much worse. Though slightly different in tempo and texture, you can almost feel the Florida humidity flushing your skin, squeezing out so much moisture that you have to strip down to whatever is legally allowed...and beyond...just like Ned and Mattie...
Until the actual soundtrack is found, remastered and once again loosed upon the world, this will do in a pinch, slap and tickle...Even purists will hit "play" and have to admit that Lawrence Kasdan's post-noir vibe comes to throbbing life in every groove.
A good performance of a sexy film score.......2001-10-02
The producers of the Varese Sarabande Film Classics series should be thanked for giving us a fine recording of John Barry's score for the film "Body Heat," one of the sexiest ever written. This CD by Joel McNeely and the London Symphony Orchestra, though not labeled original sound track, appears to follow the composer's original work. The performance and the sound quality live up to the music, which makes excellent use of a small orchestra, particularly the saxophone. You can find an even sexier re-orchestrated version of the main title on the compact disk "Moviola," a collection of John Barry's film scores conducted by the composer.
Michael Michaud, Vienna, Austria
Sultry, Supreme Score.......2001-05-16
After listening to this very noir score by John Barry from the noir film Body Heat, the mood is so overpowering that you want to run and grab a cold drink, and, perhaps, run the cold glass across your forehead. That's how effectively Barry captures the heat, the emotion, the feel of the film. This is certainly a case where the film itself and the score are equal partners in conveying that emotion.
A Decent Recreation, but I'm Hooked on the Original.......2001-05-14
I'm one of those persons lucky enough to own the original score as orchestrated by Barry on Label X 45 RPM vinyl back in '82. Unfortunately, it has picked up some wear and tear and I wanted the score on CD. I bought this one, and it is superbly recorded, but the orchestrations just don't come up to par with Barry's. Still, it's a noteworthy release, and the next best thing for those who can't get a copy of the original limited release as composed and performed by Barry.
Sultry, Supreme Score.......2001-04-27

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2002-08-20
This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!
Total Time: Disc One 71:20 on 19 Tracks & Disc Two 71:24 on 17 Tracks...Varese Sarabande 302 066 225 2...(2001)

Customer Reviews:
Skip this CD.......2007-02-13
This CD seems to have gone out of its way to trnsfer the worst VHS tapes to CD Audio and package it as classic film scores. The short excerpts are very bad and fade out just as the tempo begins to build. If you love film noir, skip this CD. If you are interested in film noir, skip this CD.
Great soundtracks "from the original films!".......2006-08-06
I feel compelled to respond to some of the negative criticism below. This is not a collection of restored and re-recorded scores by a modern orchestra. These are the original soundtracks from the films themselves. Given that they are in mono and suffer from age, they cannot possibly be judged by the same criteria as a modern recording. BUT, as a collection of noir soundtracks, they are superb. It's a huge list of title tracks from great films noir. And, as many of these are unavailable as restored and re-recorded scores, it is a wonderful disc to have in your collection. If the only scores you like are high-fidelity, however, then this is definitely not for you. But this disc also can't be judged by those sonic standards. For those of you who desire to listen to some of this more obscure film music--just as it would sound playing the video on your TV--then this is a great disc to have.
Good for fans.......2006-01-18
Given that there are very few Film Noir compilation soundtrack cd's available, I'd say this one works just fine for what it is. It's certainly not the most polished work, but it does have a lot of film scores and no fan should be without it. I'm glad I bought it.
It's at today missing for me........2006-01-15
I am waiting this CD in my home. At today it's missing. Take note of this, please.
Not For Audiophiles, But Wonderful for the Rest of Us!.......2006-01-13
I thought that this disc was quite possibly the best attempt so far at cataloging some of the best themes of the film-noir genre. It leaves out the dialogue snippets that break up the feel and mood of the music, and some of the selections are, quite simply, marvelous. Also, the compilers here were brave enough to include some of the rarer and seldom-mentioned noirs for inclusion here. If you're an audiophile, you must realize that these recordings are SIXTY YEARS OLD, for goodness sakes. I'll never understand why some people put so much stake in stereo sound and crystal clear remastering. I happen to feel that the gritty mono (which really isn't nearly as bad as has been suggested) heightens the hardbitten feel of these works. So, if you're someone who enjoys authentic film music, give this a shot! If you're expecting something butchered, repackaged, and changed around for modern tastes, don't bother with this collection!

Pleasing in an addictive way!.......2003-06-04
I RARELY give 5 stars to any cd, but this one deserves it! Lousy with sensuality, the selected melodies will hold you in their sway long after the music has ended. The "Body Heat" theme is a haunter from "Born Free" composer John Barry.
Another stunner,"The Theme From Taxi Driver," recalls Bernard Herrmann's best work on "Vertigo." But all these compositions are memorable melodies. One interesting note, in the film version of "Calling You" from "Bagdad Cafe," the song is sung by a female vocalist. In this rendition, Bob Telson's ("The Gospel at Colonus") masterpiece is voiced by a man; suprisingly, it works.
Body Heat:: Jazz at the Movies.......2002-06-05
Ordered this CD a month ago and was elated. Played it for a friend and was so impressed with the music i.e. so relaxing and puts you in the mood of expressing your thoughts to that special person that she wants to ordered one as well.
UNBELIEVABLE.......2000-04-19
I accidently purchased this CD 8 years ago and I have to say it was one of the best mistakes I have ever made! An unbelievable recording. Each song is an elixir, drawing you into a most mellow mood. Break out some fine wine, get your sweetheart, lay back and enjoy. A remarkable CD
Put champagne on ice and grab the one you love.......2000-03-31
This sensual music melts on the tongue. I put the CD player on continual play late at night and watch what happens. I was longing for the BODY HEAT soundtrack and this collection bridged the gap nicely until it came out recently. Not a bad track on the disc.
Gin, smoke and sin.......1999-05-28
Some favorites on here include 'Body Heat', 'Farewell my Lovely', the theme from Taxi Driver (I can see Travis Bickle's eyes in the mirror every time this one plays) and 'Memories of Green', the theme from Blade Runner. Play this one often enough, you'll be willing to off a few replicants yourself. This is a great CD to play when you don't have to answer the phone, when you can relax. There's better jazz around out there, but you'll have to go looking for it. If you consider some of the 'classic' jazz albums as a great single malt scotch...this one is at least Chivas. An extrafine blend that satisfys without offending anyone. And there's something to be said for that.

Back in late 80's,Body Heat's"No!Mr.Boom Boom" was one of the biggest disco hit in Japan. This is their first and last original album. Moreover, this CD version collects 12inch Extended Mixes of every song.I didn't have no idea that they released all of these songs as singles. If you like 80's dance music especially Lime or Nancy Martinez, you must get this.
