Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
This disc combines two of Carter Burwell's best soundtrack efforts for the Coen brothers, Fargo and Barton Fink. It's a study of contrasts: Fargo is filled with somber string arrangements and a full orchestra playing in minor keys. Barton Fink, meanwhile, sounds more adventurous with offbeat instrumentation (a very gamelan-sounding keyboard prevails) and a simple score that Burwell recycles into different arrangements. Fargo, especially, sounds dark and reserved--"The Ozone" and "Chewing on It" are both underlined by melancholy--while Barton Fink is just as lyrical but more mysterious. Many of these tracks are short--the two soundtracks together add up to less than 45 minutes of music--but all are poignant, and some of Burwell's best. --Jason Verlinde

Although Robert Preston and Barbara Cook put in stellar performances, it's the music that's the star of this hugely successful document of the 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small Midwestern town. Preston plays a traveling salesman/con artist, while Cook is the dull spinster "Marian the Librarian," whose love for Preston's character makes her come alive. "Seventy-Six Trombones" has become a marching band standard, while "Ya Got Trouble" (featuring dizzying fast-talk from Preston) and "'Til There Was You" (with a gorgeous vocal from Cook) remain well known even among those who have never seen the show. The latter was also a favorite of the Beatles, who covered it on their first album. --Dawn Eden

5 out of 5 stars Music Man.......2007-02-09

The original cast recording brings back the memory of the live production I saw which will always be superior, in my opinion, to the movie version. However, the movie was one of the better "reproductions" of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars One of This Country's Finest Musicals Beautifully Re-Mastered.......2006-11-23

THE MUSIC MAN opened on Broadway on December 19, 1957 to rave reviews from the critics, adulations from the captivated audiences, and the beginning of a long run. This wondrous musical is an 'opera' of sorts in that the piece is not a series of songs connected by the usual musical comedy spoken dialogue. Meredith Willson wrote the music and lyrics in such a way that there is not an extraneous note or word that doesn't contribute to the totality of the work.

Despite the multiple reincarnations of this brilliant show both on film and recording, none of them compares to this original cast. Imagine Barbara Cook (lithe, and new) as Marian the Librarian: Cook still reigns as one of our finest voices on the stage and cabaret rooms today. Robert Preston is not only rich in personality he also delivers the immensely complex patter songs with deft authority. And the Buffalo Bills add the multiple barbershop quartet numbers with authentic sound and professionalism.

This musical holds all of the joys and imaginations and longings that we all hold so dear in our memories of how things used to be - and it is so terrific to return to that stage of ecstasy again. This is a must own CD. Grady Harp, November 06

5 out of 5 stars We need a new remaster, nonetheless.......2006-10-22

A very interesting photo on the liner booklet's back cover demonstrates the one real flaw in this otherwise classic recording: it shows Robert Preston at the album sessions singing at two mikes, a fat Neumann with a Capitol flag and a skinny one, probably an AKG. This can only mean Capitol recorded this in simultaneous mono and stereo takes. With all that knob twiddling the balance had to go off, a problem not entirely corrected by the reissue engineer Bob Norberg, whose remasterings of Ol' Blue's Capitol mono output have earned scorn from some Sinatraphiles for their slight fake echo and stereo effects. (He remastered just about every album in the Broadway Angel series; the monos all appear to have the echo and stereo.) I guess we should be happy to have this in any form at all given how the other majors turned it down. Capitol was late and indifferent to the cast album trade, and it only had three hits before making its monumental closing botch of "Follies." However the label approached it it's still a great and exciting score perfectly performed. Who could have imagined a hit musical with a barbershop quartet? And if only all women could sing like Barbara Cook! Who says you can have too much of a good thing?

With the show's fiftieth anniversary coming up (!) now would be a good time for a remaster. (I know, I know, I'm tired of paying repeatedly for the same product too, but this deserves it.) It should include a second disc with the 1959 Capitol documentary LP "And Then I Wrote 'The Music Man'", where Meredith Willson and his wife Rini detail the eight years of trials and rewrites behind the show. Nor would it hurt to have bonuses like Willson's original take on "Till There Was You" (called "Till I Met You," which Fran Warren evidently first sang on "The Big Show") or a few licensed pop balladeers of the day -- and maybe examples like the 70s jingle for the late lamented Oldsmobile ("Oh ho the new Oldsmobile is a -- comin' down the line...."). It must also include Willson's contentious JFK physical fitness tune "Chicken Fat", recorded about the time "The Music Man" was filmed and available only on oddball Web music sites, where Preston yells and grunts himself into an athletic -- passion. (I keep thinking Allan Sherman recorded a full version of his notorious parody "76 Sol Cohens", but I guess he didn't.) The whole thing should end with a live public-radio performance from 1980 or 1981 where Willson led the superb Detroit Concert Band in "76 Trombones" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" -- an apt and brilliant finish.

No, I have not forgotten the Beatles, but I fear neither have their lawyers.

4 out of 5 stars Accept no substitutes!.......2006-08-22

This the best version of "The Music Man" available, especially if you're looking for the Broadway cast. The performances here are all terrific, the recording and mastering are great, and the liner notes are informative and thorough. "The Music Man" is available in several other versions and forms, including other releases of the same original cast recording, but without the good mastering or liner notes found here. My wife and I, hoping to listen to this great show with our kids, first purchased other versions that were easier to find (e.g., on iTunes) and those were major disappointments. Buy this CD (Broadway Classics from Angel) and accept no substitutes.

5 out of 5 stars Preston and Cook are the best ever.......2006-07-15

Yes, the film is a delight, and Shirley Jones is certainly good as Marian. But the original cast album of this wonderful musical remains the best version ever, mostly thanks to Barbara Cook, whose voice was and remains a miracle of rare device to listen to.

For years I thought I was the only person who was in love with her voice, wearing out vinyl LPs of this musical with replaying. Then, in the early 80s I saw Cook in a one woman show in London, and discovered I was part of a fanatical following! The other reviews here on Amazon confirm the truth: there is only one truly great Marian, Madam Librarian.

Watch the movie, which is a terrific adaptation of the stage show, go to professional and amateur revivals of the musical, but buy this recording of the score for repeated listening. There is nothing better.

4 out of 5 stars Chilling.....................2003-10-27

I saw Fargo in the theater and was immmediately struck by the music that perfectly accompanied the film. The opening track I don't think I will ever forget. Plus "Ozone" is a fantastic song, I just wish it was longer. The Barton Fink material isn't as great, but also isn't as prevelent on the disc. I love listening to this while doing homework or just writing. The music sets the tone and the atmosphere.....the album just cannot be played in the summer.

5 out of 5 stars Live and learn. .......2007-03-19

Since CD's weren't commercially available in 1972 except as a Certificate of Deposit, and Amazon generally posts the release date and track listing of the album for sale, I'd have to say, "tough luck" to the reviewers who didn't review their purchase prior to ordering. Unfortunately it's a 'read the fine print' world we live in now, and no I'm not an attorney ;) Since I was only just begun (born) in '72, I don't have old memories of her work. I'm generally not even a fan of country music. If anyone out there has ever been to a drag show, "The Happiest Girl..." has just enough camp and spirit, as well as the Dolly Parton-esque mountain music thing for one of those crazy queens to really make a statement. And nobody I have ever seen could pull that off as well as Lucinda Holiday, hamburgers and all!!! Who would have ever known I'd discover this little slice of history and widely unknown gem 30 years later? Buy this album and, above all, be sure to make it a Skip-a-dee - doo-dah - day.

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE ORIGINAL!.......2003-12-10

As much as I love the music of Donna Fargo, this is *NOT* the original "Happiest Girl in The Whole USA" album that was originally released in 1972 on DOT records. It's a good thing the track listing was posted here, otherwise I might have been fooled into thinking I was purchasing the original version. Fortunately, I still have my old vinyl copy, though after 30+ years, it's getting pretty tired. I don't understand this concept of "remaking" old albums and re-issuing them on CD. I feel this is deliberate deception on the part of the label to mislead the public. This is becoming quite a routine for some reason. Thankfully, those of us who remember our old 8-tracks and LP records aren't easily fooled. The ORIGINAL track listing for "Happiest Girl in The Whole USA" is as follows:

1. The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA
2. Manhattan Kansas
3. The Awareness of Nothing
4. Funny Face
5. A Little Somethin'(To Hang On To)
6. Daddy Dumplin
7. How Close You Came To Being Gone
8. Society's Got Us
9. It Would Have Been Just Perfect
10 Johnny B Goode.

That's the way I remember it folks, and that's the way it should have been reissued. I'm sorry, but either release the album in its entirety without butchering it up or omitting songs, or just don't even bother. I'm sick and tired of wasting time and money on deceptive and sly business practices on the part of the music industry, and until such time as it cleans up its act, I'll continue to treasure my old records and tapes.

2 out of 5 stars Another misleading title.......2002-07-23

This is NOT Donna Fargo's 1972 album, "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA". Rather, this is a compilation album with several of her more popular songs. If you want a greatest hits collection, there are better ones available. If you want the original album, as I did, you're out of luck, at least for now. Not a single one of her original albums are available. If you want to know what songs were on the original "Happiest" album, that information is available on her web site. The review guidelines do not allow me to post the url, but it should be pretty easy for you to guess.

This has become a fairly common marketing trick. Labels will release compilation albums, but give them the title of an original studio album, leading fans to purchase the wrong product. You have to be very careful to not be deceived by this tactic. Usually I am, but this time I got burned. Hopefully writing this will keep this from happening to some of you. A few of my other reviews are of similar deceptive albums.

5 out of 5 stars It makes me realize how happy I am to have loved my husband........1999-06-12

I have shared this song with many and they all become "hooked" on it. It came out at a time in my life (I was pregnant), and so in love with my husband. (After 24 "happy" years he passed away.) It was my song and I've been singing it for twenty five years. My niece (17) recently fell in love with it and is playing it for her friends. The lyrics still apply today. I highly recommend it. I need a CD now, my tapes are old.

5 out of 5 stars Most overlooked !.......2004-09-20

Donna Fargo has to be the most overlooked female country singer in the business. Being the first lady in country music to have million selling singles and being one of the few female artist of her time to write most of her songs. She has yet to get the respect that she deserves. This cd is very good but serves only a small part of her catalog. Her fans are still waiting for a complete collection!
Every time CMT has the best 100 song specials i'm amazed there's no Donna songs. Hello!

5 out of 5 stars Authentic and moving.......2003-11-07

I am not a connoiseur of country music and most of the bland crossover stuff leaves me cold. But occassionally a unique singer comes along with a song or two that really grabs me because of the authenticity and genuine emotion in the music.

Donna Fargo is such a singer and a gifted composer who enriched the pop charts in the early seventies with her catchy songs The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA and Funny Face. Yes, these songs are about the domestic bliss of everyday people but somehow they're special and unique, able to soften even the most cynical of hearts with their exuberance and engaging melodies. In addition, Fargo's voice and/or accent is quite charming, with just a hint of a lisp, which makes her style even more appealing.

Besides the aforementioned hits, I also love You Were Always There, Su;perman, US of A and Whatever I Say. The other tracks aren't quite in the same league but still very enjoyable. This is country music at its best; nothing beats a brilliant song performed with genuine feeling.

4 out of 5 stars Short collection of a great artist's best hits.......2003-03-04

After a few false starts on small labels, Donna Fargo arrived on the country charts in 1972 and went straight to the top. She combined the relentless exhuberance of Dolly Parton, the quiver of Tammy Wynette, and especially, the vocal sound of Loretta Lynn. Unlike those country queens, she was also able to cross over to the pop top 10 as well with her first two hits "Happiest Girl In The Whole USA" and "Funny Face." The major pop success was short-lived, but Fargo would become a major fixture on the country charts throughout the '70s. This 11 track set covers Fargo's best work on the ABC/Dot label: 1972-1976 (Varese Sarabonde had an eighteen track collection of this period but it is now out of print).

The ABC/Dot singles here, in chronological order, were the biggest hits. After her initial pair of perky mega-hit singles, Fargo wisely added a little sarcasm with her follow-up "Superman." She also effectively merged country and gospel with "You Can't Be A Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine)". "U.S. of A." provided a patriotic slant, but her predominant theme was domestic bliss. Fargo also, impressively, wrote most of her hits.

Fargo's late '70s Warner Brothers hits remain out of print. While those singles aren't as strong as what is found here, they have their moments. Hopefully, Warner Brothers (or Rhino) will someday put out a retrospective of those follow-up hits.

5 out of 5 stars Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A........2002-05-08

Donna Fargo is the best ever, she is such a beautiful lady inside and out, she has a very beautiful voice and personality. She is all time best. She is one of a kind, and a very specail lady. I am very greatful to have met her and have her as a friend.

5 out of 5 stars The Ellington Band in Top Form.......2007-06-27

It is wonderful to think that this was the popular music people listened to almost 70 years ago. Here we have the Duke Ellington Orchestra at its peak. Ray Nance had just joined the band and immediately made his presence felt on trumpet and violin. Jimmie Blanton was the first great bassist and Ellington uses him to great advantage. All the Ellington stars shine here including Lawrence Brown, Barney Bigard, Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney to name a few. Of course, the sound is only fair but the greatness of the band comes through. A must for Ellington fans and recommended for all.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up, America!.......2006-03-07

America's greatest jazz musician performing his own music on his favorite instrument--his orchestra--and not just any edition of Duke's band but arguably his best, especially with the presence of bassist Jimmy Blanton and tenor sax great, Ben Webster. What more could you ask for? An inspired performance? The band is tight and spirited thoughout this five-hour engagement. Faithful audio reproduction? The fidelity is miraculously close to being state of the art for a 1940 recording made on marginal equipment by hobbyists, Blanton's bass coming through with greater clarity than do the bass frequencies on some of the studio recordings Charlie Parker would make ten years later.

So why is this recording being all but ignored, even in jazz circles where news of a new on-location Coltrane or Monk discovery or the appearance of another Bird-Diz acetate manages to make waves even in the mainstream press? Unfortunately, as well known as Duke's popular songs are, his genius as a composer-orchestrator-band leader is poorly understood (despite the valiant efforts of Wynton Marsalis over the past two decades to educate the public).

Count this among Duke's 3-4 most important recordings, an absolutely essential pick-up for any Ellington fan or student of the evolution of this art form. Blanton's work on bass is a genuine revelation; Webster's solos on "Cottontail" and "Stardust" rival Coleman Hawkins' best work at the time; the horns of Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, and Harry Carney are heard to optimal effect; compositions like "Ko-Ko and "Harlem Air Shaft" are miniature masterpieces, microcosms of Ellington's cutting-edge genius that invite attentive and repeated listening to be fully grasped and appreciated.

Admittedly, there are a few trade-offs: the vocals of Ivy Anderson and Herb Jeffries are practically too faint to count; some of the numbers are incomplete or interrupted while the hobbyist-engineers quickly change acetate discs. On the other hand, the listener has a sense both of being on stage with the band, hearing Duke call off tunes, and of experiencing a continuous five-set performance by the band--a remarkable feat for a recording made in 1940.

Although an elaborate 60th anniversary edition of this concert is available on Storyville records, this Spanish import at half the price is professionally mastered and well documented. If you're new to Ellington, you might choose to pass up either recording for the time being. Start out with "Ellington at Newport," "Ellington Uptown," "Blue Rose," "Such Sweet Thunder" and 'The Nutcracker Suite." But don't dare end the relationship without spending a couple of fruitful hours with the Duke in Fargo, North Dakota.

5 out of 5 stars The One To Get..Essential Live Ellington With His Blanton Webster Band.......2005-08-12

I know there is a box set at double the price but this 2 cd set on Definitive Records/Spain ia a knockout..great sound and licensed.. AMG loves this version as well.
The music is crucial for Ellington lovers..there are liner notes and it is nicely packaged and a bargain.
I am curious to see the longbox edition with booklet but have a feeling same tapes were used for this edition.Top ranking as far as sound and value.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful 1970s country.......2005-01-30

The Happiest Girl must be one of the most uplifting love songs ever, a joyful celebration of domestic bliss. It reached number 11 on the pop charts, whilst Funny Face is an equally catchy love song that reached number 5.

None of the other tracks quite match up to these two gems, although they are mostly memorable and tuneful. Superman is an uptempo number and was a country number one like the two aforementioned hits; it reached number 41 on the pop charts. You Were Always There is a sad and gentle ballad, an ode from a child to a loving parent.

Little Girl Gone is about growing up with its excitement and disillusion, a fast paced story song with a catchy tune. I'll Try A Little Bit Harder is a typical slow country song about working to save a love that is in danger of dying, while there is a gospel undertone in the inspiring and uplifting You Can't Be A Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine), which was also a country number one.

Overall, this is a most enjoyable collection of authentic country songs from the 1970s: melodic and moving music that has stood the test of time very well. Most of these songs made the country top 10 and several reached respectable positions on the pop charts too.

5 out of 5 stars Vera Roman - Big Spring, Tx.......2005-01-02

I have listened to Donna Fargo since I was 16 years old. I think she rates right at the top with Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and all the other country women. I had her 8 track tape I believe was called Happiest Girl in the Whole USA and it had Daddy Dumplin, Manhatten Kansas, Johnny Be Good and several others, and she was sitting under a tree, barefoot in jeans a I would really like to find all those songs again but on a CD. I Think she has a wonderfull voice and love to hear her sing.

5 out of 5 stars An under rated seventies country queen.......2003-05-25

Note that this review (like all the others) is listed under Best of (Curb) as well as Best of (MCA) They are very different compliations so I will discuss both.

Donna took some time to make a breakthrough as a singer or songwriter, during which time she worked as a schoolteacher. After she wrote and recorded Happiest girl in the whole USA, things happened very quickly. That song became a top ten American pop hit as well as a country number one. The follow-up, Funny face, did likewise. That was the end of Donna's pop hits, but she had many more country hits during the seventies.

Superman, You were always there and You can't be a beacon if your light don't shine all became country number one hits, while Little girl gone, I'll try a little bit harder, U S of A, It do feel good and Don't be angry provided Donna with further top ten country hits.

Donna's songs were mostly happy and upbeat, but she could do the weepies too - listen to her rendition of Manhattan Kansas (one of the few songs on these compilations that she didn't write). Perhaps the most famous song here is Heartbreak hotel. Donna's cover of this Elvis classic does not match the original, but I enjoy it, although I am aware that some people can't stand this version. You must make up your own mind.

She switched record labels (to Warner) in 1976 and her later recordings are on the Curb compilation (which also includes Funny face and Happiest girl in the whole USA from earlier), with the exception of a gospel album recorded for MCA in 1981, represented on the MCA compilation by Say I do.

Her Warner music is also excellent. I particulary like Somebody special, but Shame on me and Ragamuffin man are among the other highlights.

Donna has never been well represented on CD, but she had a more distinctive style and voice than most. The lady with the chuckle in her voice deserves better.

What a pleasure it is to finally have these gems on CD. These 2 cd showcase Donna's versatility. You have a little Country, some Pop and Gospel. "Just for you" is my all time favorite of Donna's cd's. These song sound as fresh today as they did back in the 70's. All of Donna's fans should add this one to your collection!
