Greatest motion picture of the 1990s? This is it: Joel and Ethan Coen's intricately plotted Irish gangster picture, Miller's Crossing. Carter Burwell has been the Coen's composer of choice since the very beginning (Blood Simple), and this is his most memorable score. The movie and its characters are hard-boiled, pretty tough nuts to crack, but this haunting music (in the same autumnal brown, green, and gray tones as the visuals) lets you know there's a lot more going on beneath the surface. If "Danny Boy" gives you goosebumps (and the version here, gloriously sung by Frank Patterson, surely will), then Burwell's orchestral titles theme will have you putting on a sweater. Jazz-band versions of "King Porter Stomp" and "Runnin' Wild" brighten the mood a bit, but it's the other music that stays with you. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Good but short.......2007-07-12

Great Carter Burwell score. One of the best he did for the Coens, along with The Hudsucker Proxy. But less than 30 minutes, that's a bit short...

4 out of 5 stars Haunting - but credit where it's due, please!.......2007-01-19

I'm glad Victor's picked up on this. The main theme, which re-occurs throughout, is indeed Limerick's Lament/The Lament for Limerick, as every Irish schoolkid who dreamt through music class can confirm.

Credit to Burwell for finding it, and for a beautiful evocative arrangemnt, but not for writing it, as the sleevenotes to this soundtrack would have you believe. Credit, and royalties where their due.

2 out of 5 stars Only just satisfied.......2006-03-08

Bought this CD for the Danny Boy track. Unfortunately, it was not the film version. Still good, mind, but not great. The rest of the CD is OK, but very short.

4 out of 5 stars Brief, but brilliant.......2005-06-29

Carter Burwell has written a tremendous score for the Coen Brothers' excellent gangster film--melancholy, wistful, and elegiac. It is definitely worth having, as is the fine version of "Danny Boy," performed by legendary Irish tenor Frank Patterson. However, it loses a star because of its brevity, coming in at just around 30 minutes.

Listened to it hundreds of times. Always pulls you in.
