The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song gets caught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting.

Note that this two-CD Deluxe Edition features a larger booklet and additional tracks, including dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars "You Will LOVE This CD!!!".......2007-06-27

I just got my CD and I love it... My favorite songs is Listen, I am Changing and Of course the NO.#1 HIT--"I'm telling you I'm not going"
Just Purchase it and you will not be disappointed.!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Your Goin' To Love this!.......2007-06-20

I was very sceptic about this adaptation. I was very dissapointed in Evita when they chose populairty over talent. I am a fan of Madonna and Beyonce but the performance by Beyonce is amazing.
In answer to T.T.'s remarks. RENT THE MOVIE! Gosh, a movie cost 4 bucks at the rental store. And there is very little talking. Most f the songs are like they are in the movie. But anyways...
THe performance is atstounding. I think that this album goes right up there with The Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz and Chicago (never seenthis one, too young).
The songs are movig and the add ons are amazing. Listen is my Favorite, but more of that latter.
The Performances:
Beyonce- Beyonce was born to be Deena. Infact she mirrors Denna a whole lot (see Wikipedia - Destiny's Child). She delivers a superb performance, better that the original Bway Deena. Dreamgirls is phenominal.

Jennifer Hudson - Well what can I say but SIMON COWELL YOU WERE WRONG! And as she sings in I am Changin' AND NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP[HER]

Anikki Nonni Rose - Sorry if I spell her name wrong, but it is very odd. Honey if there was n unsung heroe of this film it would be her. Her phenominal and most of the time hilarious performance is what adds character to the film. Esp. when they brake Jimmy up with them she delivers a hilarious speech.

Eddie Murphie - Wonderful, Who knew he could sing.

Jamie Fox - GREAT!

Best Songs:
Move - Amazing! Wonderful beat. And SHAKE IT ON!
Cadilac Car - Wonderful song, esp. If you have a crappy car or a real Cadilac car
Steppin' To the bad Side - WONDERFUL, BEST SONG OF THE WHO MOVIE
I Love you I Do-lovely
Dreamgirls-Just hair raising
IT's All Over - Cuss a lot, I know, but amazing adittude though. Don't let little ones listen to this one.
And I am Telling You I'm Not Going - Just bye the CD for this song. I can't put in words the emotions in this song.
I Am Changing- Beautiful
Effie Sing my Song-Not in the movie but amazing
One Night Only- great
Disco version- great, but would have loved the wooshing like in the movie. A little too long, but when you see the extended version you will get the longer version and think WHY DID THEY CUT IT????!?!?!?
Listen - AMAZING SPECTACULAR! SUPER! IENIBOIWEBWEJKFDIVLEFB!
Dreamgirls Finale - " " (same as above)
Family (End Credits)- Better than the ordinary version for reasons I can't explain.

1 Dissapointment:
When I first saw you was a gereat song in the film, but in the original cast it was after Dreamgirls (To Sig. that Deena and Curtis were Together)
and it was reprised with an argument about Deena's Dreams. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS! but they cut out Deena and the purpose of the song was lost, but it is still wonderful.

My Only Thin is Get the Orginal Bway Cast and this CD. The Orig. Bway cast has a cool One Night Only Too. Try Them both. They have diff. textures, but are both truly amazing.

2 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-06-03

Apart from Beyonce singing Dreamgirls, this album doesn't bring much. It's a dud. Most of the songs are just a lot of talking not actual singing. The movie was good, and I think it's better to watch that and listen to the songs. Unlike the soundtrack "Casino", which I can listen to and enjoy without seeing the movie, I can't with this. they should have done what most movies do and pick a bunch of great oldies by other artists back in the day to create the movie/soundtrack. and i'm also very sick of Jennifer Hudson. sure she can hit high notes, but she only sounds like she's screaming. her voice is not appealing. i rather listen to Beyonce's voice any day; it's easier on my ears. i also don't like how she's so arrogant and ungrateful to Idol. i don't think she's going far with that kind of stink attitude. it just shows you're a sore loser.

3 out of 5 stars Quite forgettable.......2007-05-15

I've had this CD for several months now and I hardly ever listen to the music. I'm surprised how uninteresting it is to me. Yes, there are some good musical moments on this CD and Jennifer Hudson can sing, but she also screams too much, in my opinion, and I think she was extremely overrated in this performance. I just don't love listening to her sing on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls.......2007-05-12

The music is more intense watching the movie. I didn't enjoy the CD as much without the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Sarafina.......2006-06-26

A great movie which gives an overview of what occured during the apartheid regime in South Africa. It tells the story of a young black girl living in Soweto, who has dreams to make it as a star before she realises the true reality of the situation around her. Not a morbid movie at all but has its serious moments. The funny side of people living in their situation is portrayed very well.

5 out of 5 stars The Struggle for Justice.......2006-05-08

"Sarafina" is a powerful and moving film about the struggle of South African school kids for survival and freedom against apartheid. It is a story of determination, perseverance and courage against tremendous odds. It teaches us that good will always triumph against evil: that the oppressed will always fight back and die to regain their freedom and dignity. The viewer will have a picture of what life was like under apartheid, ranging from school life, living conditions for blacks, the prisons and the brutal police.

I particularly love the beautiful South African music with its rich and outstanding vocals, percussion, horns and the like. You will love the sounds of veterans musicians like Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba.

This is highly recommended for those who want to learn the history of the struggle against social injustice in South Africa.

5 out of 5 stars Watch it!.......2006-03-19

Amazing film about the struggle of South African school kids against aparthied. You can imprison the body but never the mind!

5 out of 5 stars POWERFUL MOVIE.......2005-10-27

I am not going to go into explaining the plot. This is a great movie. Leleti Khumalo is an a talented actress. When the world finally recognizes her for the talented beauty she is....Look Out.

Please take the time to watch this movie. You wont regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds of freedom!.......2005-09-29

`Sarafina!' is the soundtrack to the brilliant musical movie starring Whoopi Goldberg as a radical school teacher in apartheid South Africa, and a bright sunny student named Sarafina. Whoopi allegedly agreed to appear in Sister Act II on the condition that this movie got promoted by Hollywood.

The soundtrack comprises mostly South African music, rich in percussion, organs, horns, guitars, throbbing bass, and the outstanding vocals and harmonizing South African music is famous for.

Opening track `Sarafina!' by Hugh Masakela is a bouncy, rhythmic number performed by the cast. Melodic guitars and darting horns make this a winner. In a similar vein is `Freedom is coming tomorrow'.

`The Lord's prayer' is a dramatic rendition of the famous prayer. It starts off slow and accapella with organ accompaniment, before the rich African rhythm heralds a joyous chorale performance. This was performed by the entire school cast at the start of another school day.

`Thank you mama' is a tender lilting ballad that kicks off with chants and rolling guitars. A love song between mother (Miriam Makeba) and daughter (Leleti Khumalo).

Most of the other songs are typical beautiful South African sounds, ranging from down tempo lament-like songs to joyous celebrations; `Nkonyane Kandaba' (lament-like), `Sabela', `Sechaba', `Safa Saphel' Isizwe' (lament-like), the guitar laden `Vuma Dlozi Lami' and `Lizobuya'.

`One more time' features the fiery vocals of James Ingram, with South African backing vocals which transform what would have otherwise been a bland R&B song.

A brilliant movie and soundtrack!

This is exactly the kind of soundtrack you'd expect to complement a movie that takes a humorous if sentimental look at the power of love and friendship. Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing, and Joan Cusack star in the film and they have musical counterparts in Beth Nielsen Chapman, Martina McBride, and teen blues star Shannon Curfman. All tracks are manicured performances high in cinematic gloss and often enveloped in swooning strings or other effects of grandeur. It's only appropriate then that a stylist as accomplished as Lyle Lovett would smooth over Ray Charles's "What'd I Say," and that eternal studio pro and road veteran John Hiatt would contribute the workmanlike R&B-influenced "Let It Slip Away." One sure surprise is Joan Osborne's collaboration with Tommy Sims for the hip-hop-R&B of "Rowdy Booty Time." Most successful is Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin's duet of "Beyond the Blue," on which their complementary voices merge with a subdued rhythm track for one of the soundtrack's few inspired moments. --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars A few good songs.......2007-03-16

There are a couple of good songs, but a few not so good ones. But I really love that Beat of a Heart song, so I had to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Where The Heart Is..........2006-08-01

I'm not a big fan of country, for that is what this soundtrack is mostly made of, but I actually kind of liked the country songs. They got to my heart. The music is heartwarming and just "stroll down the city streets" type of music. Some of the music is upbeat and some of it is sad. This is highly recommended if you love country, but if you hate country, this isn't for you then.

5 out of 5 stars Love the CD.......2006-06-04

I bought this CD because I had bought the movie. I loved the movie. Then I heard the CD. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. I think it is a great CD. I would recommend this CD to anyone. Every song on it is wonderful. There isn't a song that I dislike. One of my favorite songs on the CD is "Just Might Change Your Life". The whole CD is great.

4 out of 5 stars If you love the movie..........2005-01-31

...get this soundtrack. It's a really fun album. I must admit, there are a couple of songs on there that I skip past like (What'd I Say - Lyle Lovette)&(Let it Slip Away - John Hiatt). But that's just my taste. I love having the Corrs song "So Young," so much that I think I might just go buy THEIR album. And the song "Beat of the Heart" has actually grown on me and I like it more and more every time I hear it.
I'm happy to have this album. It's feel-good music and it makes me feel happy. I would definitely recommend this album to someone who loved this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD in Time.......2002-07-24

I LOVED this movie, so I was psyched to get the soundtrack, and I love it! I fell instantly in love with "Shake my Soul" and "beyond the Blue," but it did take some time for me to enjoy the whole CD. "Few and Far Between" and "Rowdy Booty Time took some getting used to, but now I can honestly say that I enjoy every single song on this CD....besides "Beat of the Heart"...I wasn't a fan of the song in the movie, and I guess I still don't like, but don't let that stop you from missing out on the rest this CD has to offer!

There's a popular movie trivia game called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon whose rough hypothesis is that the actor is somehow the center of the cinematic universe. One doesn't get very far into the game without encountering Footloose. The film that seems destined to become an 80's camp classic (repressed Midwestern youth bravely fighting for their right to dance) was also a notable trailblazer in the pop song soundtrack marketing scam, i.e. line up a bunch of contemporary hit makers and have them cut a batch of songs that might not be germaine to the film's plot but will sell oodles of units. But damned if Footloose isn't a classic slice--for better or worse--of mid-'80s, album-oriented rock. This kind of instant era-compilation must make the folks at K-Tel very nervous. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

If you like listening to songs played in the background of movies, go for this one. I am more of the score type of soundtrack buyer. The CD in a whole was enjoyable for a car ride, but not much more than that. I am still satisfied with my purchase though.

2 out of 5 stars the burden of older recordings.......2007-01-09

I was a bit disappointed about this SACD. The sound quality is better then the original one but not that good compared to some other SACD's I own. The best one until now is by far 'Brothers in Arms' by Dire Straits. It is also based on a (20 years) old recording but you really get the feeling sitting next to Knopler when he tickles those strings.

5 out of 5 stars better than the first.......2006-11-03

There are not many times that the remastered out does the original but this does and the added bonus of 4 tracks are a welcpme addition.

5 out of 5 stars great music with great technology.......2006-10-29

This SACD is worth buying. Sound is better than it was eventhough it has only two channel.

3 out of 5 stars FOOTLOOSE ~ A little too loose for me........2006-09-19

4 out of 5 stars A magnificent EMI-Angel R&H film soundtrack trilogy.......2005-11-29

This delightful boxed set of the three expanded EMI-Angel R&H soundtracks is a joy to behold. Although this boxed set doesn't include the South Pacific and Sound of Music soundtracks, there is much to enjoy in the soundtracks of Oklahoma, Carousel and The King and I. Dipping into this boxed set, one can discover a treasure trove of sterling performances and glorious voices, backed by sumptuous orchestral playing conducted by Jay Blackton and Alfred Newman. An added bonus is the state-of-the-art remastering that allows these 50-year-old recordings to sound their best, and the exhaustive liner notes.

All the performances in this boxed set are stellar, even when there are voice doubles. Oklahoma and Carousel benefit greatly from the casting of Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones as the two lead characters. They have glorious, rounded voices and they sing their parts with character and conviction. Gordon MacRae gives a handsome, dashing portrayal of Curley the cowboy, and does an about-turn for a stouthearted portrayal of the tortured lover Billy Bigelow. There is much of him to enjoy on the Oklahoma and Carousel soundtracks, ranging from the confidence of Oh, What a Beautiful Morning and the hearty Oklahoma, to the love-duets People Will Say We're in Love and If I Loved You, capped by a riveting performance of the Carousel Soliloquy. MacRae is well-matched by Shirley Jones as a pert and attractive Laurey, and a tender and touching Julie, proving herself as his perfect partner in their love duets. They are both backed by a characterful cast that acts all the secondary parts superbly. In Oklahoma one can savour the delightfully comic pairing of Gene Nelson and Gloria Grahame as Will and Ado Annie, and the dark, brooding hues of Rod Steiger as the misunderstood villain Jud. Carousel offers Claramae Turner's earthy portrayal of Julie's cousin Nettie (whose assuring performances of June is Busting Out All Over and You'll Never Walk Alone are definite highlights), and Barbara Ruick gives a zestful portrayal of Julie's friend Carrie. In addition to these two early R&H scores, this boxed set also offers the sumptuous King and I soundtrack, with Yul Brynner's authoritative King holding sway over Marni Nixon's unflappable Anna Leonowens. Although the entire cast sings this score superbly, they are well-matched by the gorgeous Alfred Newman arrangements, sumptuous and lustrous. This King and I reissue, like the other soundtracks, also restores music not available on the original Capitol LPs and allows us to hear not just underscore but the ballets as well.

If I am fulsome in the praise of these critic-proof performances, one might ask, why am I giving four stars rather than five? There is a minor quibble in the presentation of these classic soundtracks - but this isn't against the critic-proof performances that easily deserve five stars. Despite Didier Deutsch's benevolent intentions of restoring unreleased music to these soundtracks, the sources he used for the expanded sequences are from final mix prints of the soundtrack rather than the music-only masters (only for Oklahoma and Carousel). As a result, the Oklahoma and Carousel ballet sequences contain extraneous sound effects such as foot-stomping, hand-clapping, and thunder and lightning sounds. I'm sure many purists like me will bristle at this, since these random sounds would eventually drown out the music, as some previous Amazon reviewers have noted. Thankfully, on the positive side, the King and I soundtrack is completely free of the random sounds, because we can hear the underscore free of any meaningless dialogue intrusions. Although I wish I could hear all the Newman underscore, there is an added bonus in the inclusion of the Uncle Tom's Cabin ballet. Taking this boxed set as a whole, the expanded sequences are a first step in allowing us R&H fans to hear music cut from the original LPs, and hopefully this trilogy of expanded soundtracks will pave the way for complete releases of these soundtracks mixed from the original music-only source material. Luckily, the critic-proof performances will always endure forever, and will always serve as the saving grace of this new expanded trilogy of R&H soundtracks.

In short, despite the minor presentation demerit of this trio of EMI-Angel releases of R&H, this boxed set is always enjoyable with superb performances of these classic musicals. Hopefully, this trio will satisfy us for many years until 20th-Century Fox puts out proper, cleaned-up complete versions of all the R&H soundtracks. Yet I will still urge anyone who loves R&H to add this set to their collection, along with the newly-expanded Sound of Music soundtrack.

1 out of 5 stars Nothin' like the real thing, baby.......2003-11-20

I do not wish to introduce my very interested grandaughter to American Musicals without the original cast albums. Marnie Nixon is no Gertruce Lawrence. I want Mary Martin doing South Pacific. I wish you had a category of original cast albums.

4 out of 5 stars CAPITOL RECORDS VERSIONS ARE MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!.......2002-03-27

The Angel Records re-issues of the "Rodgers and Hammerstein Three Pack" are terribly presented. The sound quality is horrible and the "expanded matereal" is nothing but the dance numbers taken right from the unmixed six- track stereo tapes, complete with every foley effect (EX: foot stomping, animal noises, and unwanted dialougue only meant for he movie).
All three soundtracks were issued on LP by Capitol records after each film debuted (1955- 1957). The LP versions feature the entire vocal score (minus the extra material) and no foley interruption, strictly instrumental and more pleasant to listen to. The LP versions were released on 3CDs in 1994 as a box set (bearing the same title as this one. This version of the box set is still in print and is highly recommended. You will enjoy these classic scores if you listen to the REAL SOUNDTRACKS.

3 out of 5 stars RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN REMASTERS REVISITED.......2001-09-20

My original reviews of the three Rodgers and Hammerstein expanded soundtrack reissues are based on my belief, which is shared by many other people who grew up with and have grown to love these magnificent performances for their musical excellence, not as a mere souvenir of a movie for casual listening, which I perceive is about only what most of the reviewers of these CD's seem to care. If I want to experience the movie, I watch the movie on DVD or tape. If I want to enjoy the music on a recording, I want to music to be allowed to speak for itself without sound effects mixed in meant exclusively for the visual presentation. The film versions of these three Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals showcase the finest performances, before or since, that these magnificent scores have ever received. The additional music on the expanded editions of these albums is NOT from the original multi channel vocal and music separation soundtrack master recordings stored in the 20th Century Fox vaults but instead recorded directly from a final mix print soundtrack complete with foot stomping and extraneous sound effects, which besides having no place on a music only recording, actually detract from the listening experience rather than enhance it. If this were 42nd. Street, the foot stomping would make sense, since it is an integral part of the musical presentation, but without the visuals these random sounds don't make any sense in OKLAHOMA, THE KING AND I and especially CAROUSEL, where the magnificent arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett, Alfred Newman and Ken Darby should be allowed to speak for themselves without intrusions from foley effects. If this were a live recording, such sounds would be an artifact of the original and impossible to remove and therefore have to be acceptable if one wanted to hear the score in its entirety. But in the case of OKLAHOMA, CAROUSEL and THE KING AND I (also SOUTH PACIFIC), a wealth of unmixed original musical material exists in the studio vaults which could have been made available for this remastering and even more music could have been included on these albums (for OKLAHOMA, probably enough to fill 2 CD's). For instance, THE OUT OF MY DREAMS BALLET in OKLAHOMA could have been presented in its ENTIRETY, with the extra verse of the song which was on the original album but on this CD replaced by a much shorter version used in the film, without any worry about the sound effects intruding at the beginning and especially at the end. THE KANSAS CITY, FARMER AND THE COWHAND DANCE MUSIC AND THE FINALE could have been presented minus the foley intrusions that almost drown out the music entirely. In CAROUSEL, LOUISE'S BALLET could have been presented in its ENTIRETY without any worry about the ocean sound effects intruding at the beginning and the OPENING MUSIC lead up to the CAROUSEL WALTZ Main Title could have been presented minus the dialogue at the beginning of the album. The deluxe laserdisc of THE KING AND I contained a CD of about 76 minutes including the complete vocal score and Alfred Newman's excellent underscoring, all completely free of extraneous sound effects and dialogue. Why weren't these tracks used for this CD release? That is the saddest part concerning this release. The original material could have been made available if anyone at EMI-Angel had cared enough to present RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S soundtracks with the integrity that these classic recordings deserve and should have gotten. If you can get past these aberrations imposed on us by producer Didier C. Deutsch, (in addition to some amateur sloppy fade-ins and fade-outs cross cutting the old and new material) the sound on these CD's is very good and offers an energetic and beautifully orchestrated performance of OKLAHOMA by Gordon Mac Rae, Shirley Jones and the entire supporting cast. In fact, this performance is superior to the Broadway original in every respect. CAROUSEL offers a performance of the seven minute Soliloquy by Gordon Mac Rae which is one of the greatest vocal performances of the 20th. Century. In the capable hands of the legendary composer/arranger/conductor Alfred Newman, Richard Rodgers' soaring melodies are taken to heights of brilliance undreamed of in the Broadway original. This is especially evident in "Louise's Ballet." Ken Darby's excellent choral arrangements and wonderful vocals by MacRae, Jones, Claramae Turner, Barbara Ruick, Robert Rounseville and Cameron Mitchell all add up to the most perfect performance of this musical ever. THE KING AND I preserves Yul Brynner's definitive performance as the King and the perfect combination of Deborah Kerr and Marni Nixon as Anna, with orchestrations, supporting vocals and choral work (again by Newman and Darby) that will take your breath away in its magnificence. But even so, try to find the previous CD versions of these albums, which may not have the additional music, but do include the entire vocal scores(including the longer version of the song OUT OF MY DREAMS in OKLAHOMA) without all the intrusive sound effects and sloppy edits making for a far more enjoyable listening experience. Let's hope that someday EMI-Angel will give all three of the Rodgers and Hammerstein soundtracks their due and re-release them with added material from the untainted studio vault separations. That would really be SOMETHING SPECIAL.

4 out of 5 stars inspirational .......2006-12-15

I love the music to the movie "Johns". Charles Brown is a master at sexy, moody, truely inspirational blues. His fantastic rendition of " Driftin' Blues", and " Black Night " are worth the price of this soundtrack by themselves. Give it a listen if you love blues!

2 out of 5 stars Can't recommend.......2005-02-24

I love Charles Brown, especially when accompanied by the sublime Danny Caron. However, this CD is a poor representation of their joint mastery. 4 of the tracks are less than 2 minutes, 3 are different versions of the same song & none shine with the usual Brown/Caron brilliance. Buy Someone To Love, On More For The Road, In a Grand Style, All My Life and skip this one.
