Platoon (1986 Film) - And Songs From The Era [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In a musical collection that is as much soundtrack as it is score, Oliver Stone's Platoon is a breakthrough for its ability to embody the extremes of the human condition in Vietnam. While most of the songs by themselves are commonly found as representative of the era, together they become a personality. Smokey Robinson's soulful and heartfelt "Tracks of My Tears" is offset by the down-home pride of Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee." In turn, they are challenged by the escapist fantasies of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" and Otis Redding's "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay." The glue that held these social groups together in Vietnam, however tenuous this bond, was the common experience of combat. Here this combat takes form as Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. Barber's violins play first at the aftermath of the torching of a Vietnamese village and then again as the undercurrent for Charlie Sheen's reflective monologue at the film's finale. Each time, they embody the pain and anguish of the previous moments, searching for cause but finding only loss and despair. The strings become the screams of the wounded, the souls of the lost, and the conscience of the living, and in so, the Adagio for Strings itself serves as a testament to an experience that must be faced to be understood. --James Stockstill

Review of Platoon Soundtrack.......2006-09-02
Love this cd. The music is spectacular and reminds me of the 60's generation.
I don't know what hit me!.......2006-07-29
When I saw this movie the first time, I thought "WOW" that was pretty good. But then I watched it a second time, already having a better idea of what it was like, and I really got into the music. But it was the ending scene that shook me up.
"Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber is now what I consider the greatest piece of classical music I have ever heard. So intense, dramatic, and graciously smooth and AMAZING! It is now my favorite song OF ALL TIME. Flawless to the enth degree.
Now I am a Classical Rock fan at heart, but this song is too beautiful to be true. I have done constant research on just trying to find the name of it and listening to it once again! I don't know what struck me, but I now truly believe this song has taken me to a new level in life. A level that is: this is reality, anything you see or hear about on TV (Iraqi Freedom, Middle East Crisis) is real. Everytime I have listened to this song, I think back on my own actions and how lucky I have been to have the life I have.
Never has a song done that to me.
I only got this CD because of this song, but it was truly worth it. 5/5 stars.
"Platoon: Soundtrack" is excellent!.......2006-07-02

Good soundtrack .......2005-10-09
the song "Adagio for Strings" is da bomb forever. I luv the arranging and the string movement led my music composer George Delerues. 'specially dug "Barnes Shoots Elias", that's very tight. Most of the songs on there are "Tracks On My Tears"- Smokey Robinson, "Hello, I Love You" (that's was my introduction to the rock door The Doors led by late lead singer of the band Jim Morrison, RIP), "White Rabbit" (Pretty patriotic song and homage to the war goin on) by Jefferson Airplane, etc...
Lemme say "Adagio for Strings" is such a very cool, very relax, very quiet and real smooth to listen too. For instance, what if I did a arrangement of that anyway? How 'bout that? Lemme I'm very addicted to all types of music scores for TV, film, award shows, video, etc...
Recommend u checkout music from Leonard Bernstein, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Henry Mancini, Peter Nero, Al Hirt, to name a few. This is very good listening.
a soundtrack that must be felt to be experienced.......2005-02-04
After first hearing this soundtrack in my 11th grade drama class, it too me aback.
It is an emotionally draining soundtrack to be sure. And the piece 'barnes shoots elias' is a taut nerve-racker. It speaks to innocence, savagery and humanity's struggle with its bestial potential. Kick ass!

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

Great Soundtrack.......2004-04-03
Great soundtrack from a so-so movie. Worth buying.
beautifully done..........1999-12-09
The Platoon Leader Southtrack is an excellent piece of music done by George Clinton. The tracks include a mix of military style songs with heroic drumbeats and songs with exotic Eastern instrument that have very catchy tunes. This soundtrack is an excellent soundtrack for a war movie. If you have not seen Platoon Leader, try listening to the soundtrack...
Great Soundtrack!.......1999-03-29
I enjoy soundtracks very much mainly because I love to workout to them. So when a soundtrack such as this one comes along with its military style / energetic music I have to have it. The main titles are heroic in nature and the Vietnamese jungle themes ad a great mysterious feel. George S. Clinton has composed a master piece here!

A few good tracks.......2005-07-05
54th Platoon provides us with a solid rookie effort. It's not good, but it's not bad. The CD is very short, with way to many skits and half-songs. But, tracks like "Holdin' It Down," and "Pimpin" (both produced by Lil Jon) make this CD almost worth the amount I paid for it. A personal favorite of mine is "She Like." I could bump that all day. If you like songs with good beats, and don't really care about lyrical prowess, you may want to look at 54th Platoon.
reppin the south fo sho.......2003-10-04
Dis s**t is the best 2 come out the south this year.If your lookin 4 a good south album be sure 2 pick this one up u won't be disapointed . Not one bad song on it, stand out songs include 5,8,10,11 dem sons iz hot s**t.
holdin it down fa sure.......2003-08-21
iight yungs ima lay it out for ya...dis joint is HOTTT. dem N.O. boyz be doin the damn thang. dis a cd u can let ride without eva skippin a track. the tightest joints are "holdin it down"- a good street anthem dat u wanna keep on listenin to. sick beat. "she like" and "momma don't cry" are also ill but lemme tell u the whole damn cd is off the chaiiins. u heard me, go buy dis joint.
54th Platoon- All or Nothin.......2003-06-06
New Orleans 54th Platoon (Big Nut, J.S., T.L., Nu Black) debut album "All or Nothin" is a decent album by one of Hiphops newer groups. First heard 54th Platoon on Fubu Records "The Goodlife" album. Amazon has the tracklisting wrong in the setup. Basically on this album I found some average tracks and some good ones, some of the good ones include "She's Like" a song thats been blazing up radio waves, produced by Jason Brown. Ty Tyffe produced "Don't" is another track I like. "Mama Dont Cry" follows and is a decent laid back track. My favourite track on this album has to "V.S.O.P." a track with a mellow relaxed beat about chilling in the club, which keeps the listner nodding. I found alot of other tracks average on this joint, beats make this album fairly sick, but to make a real sick album, groups need memorable lyrics, and I found that missing a bit on this one. Maybe with time they will develop more. All the same 54th Platoon's "All or Nothin" does have some blazing tracks that dont dissapoint, and I look forward to there next album. 3.5
54th platoon brought the thunder.......2003-05-19
This is a tight cd. 54th platoon is representing the N.O. If you like southern rap, then you will love this cd. The track featuring eightball, "pimpin" is the tightest cut lyrically to me. But the whole cd is tight. I can start at track one and let it ride all the way through. If you don't got it, please get it now.

First Platoon's "Connected" was the sleeper album of 1999. While all this Lousiana "No Limit" and "Cash Money" projects were unfortuantely crowding our record stores and air waves -- it's nice to see real hip-hop coming out of the south. This album is solid and is for hip-hop fans that desire art rather than glitter.
