The pop song-score is often accused of being little more than ancillary merchandising for many a film and the supporting evidence is often hard to deny. But this well-chosen collection of modern rock and metal for director Jonathan Hensleigh's adaptation of the vengeance-obsessed Marvel Comics anti-hero is a gratifying exception; apt sonic seasoning for the film's bleak, contemporary edge. The thrash of Hatebreed, Chevelle, and the new Drowning Pool lineup and tracks by more established acts like Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, and Queens of the Stone Age (who turn in a smart, chunky cover of Romeo Void's Rock-of-the-80's staple, "Never Say Never") alone would make it a welcome rock-metal sampler. But its 19 tracks also encompass an intriguing range of lesser known bands and one-off collaborations (Seether and Amy Lee, Jerry Cantrell and Damageplan, Ben Moody/Jason Miller/Jason "Gong" Jones); all bristling with a dark, moody energy that perfectly echos the film's dour, relentlessly violent tone. -- Jerry McCulley

An Instant Classic Compilation.......2006-02-19
Anyone questioning whether or not to add this album to their collection need only look at the back of the case. With a role call that boasts an enormous amount of talent, this album delivers hard hitting rock and insightful lyrics that give it depth. It is rare to find an album that not only has great music for a listener who wants some music and also lyrics for those who enjoy looking a little deeper into their music. From Hatebreed to Smile Empty Soul, this CD covers all ranges of emotion and never disappoints!
Perfect Punisher Sound.......2005-12-07
The songs on this album are just the type of music you think of when you think "The Punisher". Even if you haven't seen the movie, but love the sound of rock, this is one of the best albums you can get that comes with a nice variety of artists. If you are a fan of The Punisher movie and or comics, this is definitely a can't miss soundtrack. As is the Original Score to the film...
Powerful music!.......2005-09-20
I was actually more attracted to The Punisher by the music coming from the soundtrack than the actual movie. In fact, I was a little disappointed that the music wasn't more prominently featured in the movie.
The bands and the songs selected for the soundtrack are all so energizing and powerful. I could hardly believe that the collection was so good - not a weak song in the bunch. Give it a listen, and you'll be smiling and rockin' too!
measuring up (now 4 stars instead of 3...).......2005-08-26
Technically, this isn't my second review of the product; it's just me taking my original review and completely rewriting it. Quite frankly, as time went on and I heard other Marvel-based movie soundtracks, I started to realize just how good The Punisher's soundtrack is. With the ultimate combination of rock and... more rock, Punisher contends for best soundtrack I've ever heard. A few of the standout tracks for me (not in order of how much I like them, but in how they appear [for the most part] on the CD) are:
Drowning Pool- Step Up: Now, if you've read my review of Desensitized, by Drowning Pool (the album this song came off of), you would have heard me mention that I love this song, but it just isn't really Drowning Pool due to the lack of Dave Williams in the song. I stand by that thought, although I do still really like this song.
Nickelback- Slow Motion: I'm pretty well impressed with this particular song, but not as much as I am with some of the other songs on this soundtrack. It's got its merits, though, mainly cause it's Nickelback...
Seether (feat. Amy Lee)- Broken: Damned if I can't label this the best damn song on here. With Seether and frontman Shaun Morgan's ex-girlfriend Amy Lee (of Evanescence fame) as the backing vocalist, this song is both hard-hitting and haunting at the same time. If you've heard this particular song, you know what I mean.
Smile Empty Soul- Finding Myself: I also call this one "Smile Empty Soul Goes Acoustic"- and amazingly enough, alternative rock band Smile Empty Soul's first all-acoustic song works like a charm and is one of my favorites.
Trapt- Lost in a Portrait: In my opinion, Lost in a Portrait isn't as good as some of Trapt's other songs, but it's still a good one and a good pick for the soundtrack; I believe this one was recorded specifically for the soundtrack, as I couldn't find this one on either Trapt or Someone in Control...
Seether- Sold Me: Seether's second contribution to the compilation; like Broken, this one comes from Seether's (semi)second CD, Disclaimer II, a reworking of their debut cut Disclaimer. This one is much more hard-edged than Broken, but not necessarily better... it is good though.
Edgewater- Eyes Wired Shut: Tied with Broken for the best song on here. I love how Edgewater so succintly draws you in with the first hook of the chorus- "Eyes wired shut, running through my brain..." Awesome song, guys.
Hatebreed- Bound to Violence: A bit more heavy metal-ish than I'm used to, but I got used to this and actually started to like it. Hatebreed (and more particularly, this song) is what got me listening to bands like Lamb of God and Chimaira, so thanks.
Mark Collie- In Time: By far the most haunting songs on the soundtrack and one of my favorites. Go Mark!!!
Most people would expect me to end this with some kind of witty saying to aid you in making your decision to further research this product- but I'm just too damn tired. So here it goes: The Punisher is frankly one of the best movie soundtracks out there, so go check it out- you won't be disappointed.
Mass Attraction.......2005-07-07
I too, was pleasantly surprised by the lesser-known alterna-hard-rock acts on this disc (Trapt, Finger Eleven, Submersed). Along with Span's 2004 2CD masterpiece "Mass Distraction," this is one of the best guitar-driven experiences of the last year-AND that's saying something for a soundtrack to a movie!

Spectacular score.......2007-03-21
The very first thing I noticed when seeing Jonathan Hensleigh's Punisher film was the moody and haunting opening score as the opening title credits dripped onto the screen. Having been unfamiliar with composer Carlo Siliotto (honestly, I had never even heard of him) I was intrigued and very impressed based on the opening theme alone. Thankfully though, the rest of the Punisher score is nearly just as good, as Siliotto makes himself known as a superb composer to American movie-goers. Tracks "The Massacre", "God's Gonna Sit This One Out", "The Torture", "The Arrow", "The Skull", and "Call Me the Punisher" are all fantasticly moody and chilling, and startlingly poignant as well; which is a welcome surprise for a comic book movie score. Siliotto even manages to capture the feel of the character through his music more so than Hensleigh did with the film, though that might not seem like such a surprise to some viewers of the film. All in all, the Punisher score is one of the best film scores to come out in quite some time, and Siliotto's main theme is worth the price of admission alone.
Punisher soundtrack.......2007-03-11
This has all the background music from The Punisher movie. It also includes La Donna e Mobile, the song from the fight with The Russian, and Jealous One, which is sung in one of the scenes at the club. It notably features the opening theme from the credits. The only thing I didn't like is that "In Time" by Mark Collie (Harry Heck in the movie) is not on there. The music is very good, and you don't have to remember which scene in the movie it's from to appreciate it.
Outstanding Musical Score.......2006-08-09
Carlo Siliotto's score for the Punisher is outstanding. If you are a fan of the movie, you will love this soundtrack. Even if you are not a fan of the movie give the soundtrack a chance, you will probably still enjoy it.
One of those rare exceptions..........2006-03-14
...where the quality of the soundtrack succeeds that of the movie itself.
Carlo Siliotto's score manages to capture both Frank Castle and the Punisher while keeping the atmosphere of the comic books. At times frightening and speedy, at other times melodramatically slow, almost kitschy. Almost.
Unlike the movie, the soundtrack works.
Great Movie + Great Score.......2005-12-07
This is one of my favorite movies and one of the best scores I have ever heard. Like stated before, this score really captures the mood of The Punisher as stated by the composer himself, Carlo Siliotto.
"While I was writing this music, it was exciting for me to mix such diverse elements as sadness and hope, along with love and darkness, with jealousy and friendship, all combined with bad memories and good memories which, 'Can save your live.' And this quote from the movie has been the key to helping me to create the soundtrack.
I hope my music is something The Punisher would appreciate and feel like its part of his own character."
- Carlo Siliotto
- To: Director, Jonathan Hensleigh
The above section is from a letter written by Carlo Siliotto to the Director, Jonathan Hensleigh. The letter in it's entirety is included in the Score Booklet.
Again, great score and great movie. A can't miss for any Punisher fan!

cool songs.......2007-01-11
This is a pretty good soundtrack. I remember seeing the movie at the theatre in 1989. The music reached at and grabbed you. The soundrack is now here. This gets high marks.
A Surprisingly Innovative and Sweeping Score!.......2005-11-17
This film, based on the comic book character of the same name, was brought to the screen in 1989 with Dolph Lundgren in the lead role. It was violent, raw and stylish, even though it was not what some comic book fans expected, many having already determined how Castle should have been shown on film. Another problem was that because of studio problems, the film was not released widely in theaters and was not brought to video until years later. About 5 years ago, it was economically released on DVD, but without the stereo soundtrack, which naturally weakened the impact of the film and sadly, this brilliant score.
Composer Dreith has long been working with an impressive list of composers, such as John Williams, James Horner, Eliott Goldenthal, Hans Zimmer, Mark Shaiman, and others, as an orchestrator and conductor. He has worked on such films as "Jurassic Park", "Sleepless in Seattle", "Misery", "The Addams Family", "Aliens 3" and many others. He is no novice in the world of motion picture scoring and this CD contains about 20 minutes of interviews with Dreith and the director Mark Goldblatt, which will give those interested in motion picture scoring real insight to how music is produced for film. There is also a beautifully produced full-color 16-page booklet included in the jewel box.
Here is one of the rare Dreith scores, and though the film was not a major blockbuster, Dreith pulls out all the stops on his creativity, foresight and ingenuity. From the opening theme, a combination of rich orchestral passion mixed with electronic detachment (much like the mind of our anti-hero), all the way through this emotional, frightening and fascinating tapestry of sound. The film was only about an hour and a half, yet here is a score of nearly an hour. This score truly narrates the emotional impact and motivations not shown in the characters and fills in the blanks for some of the more quiet characterizations. One can almost feel introspection of Castle, and the heavy metal of the sewer where he lives, yet those French horns also seem to refer to hope in the light from the streets above. I was particularly taken with the brilliant string passages on "Choose Your Weapon" and "Wake Up", which I continue to play over and over. These truly convey Castle's character as relentless and determined. On "Path to Tanaka" and "Pain in the Neck" you will be treated to Dreith's firey interpretation of Japanese instrumentation and phrasing.
It is clear that Dreith is influenced by some mentors... particularly John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I am reminded occasionally of the scores from "Towering Inferno", "Chinatown", "Earthquake" and "Planet of the Apes"... yet the composer surely has a sound and style uniquely his own and "The Punisher" certainly showcases this. I understand this southern California native is now composing more of his own music. He certainly seems to want to carry on the legacy of great film music began by Steiner, Korngold, Rozsa and Bernstein... and I welcom it. Many action films of the 80s and 90s used popular songs and scores based on rock music... and they now appear terribly out-of-date and clumbsy. This score seems as fresh and exciting as ever. I hope they re-release this motion picture with a stereo score, so we can appreciate the film as it should be. Though not a monumental achievement cinematically, this score certainly makes the film memorable musically.
