Editorial Reviews
Product Description
First time on CD. Composed & Conduted by the legendary Legrand including his "Picasso Suite."
This nostalgic coming-into-manhood fantasy features a gorgeous Oscar(r)-winning score by Michel Legrand ("Yentl," "The Thomas Crown Affair").
Director Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) evokes the period with double-dip ice cream cones, paddleball, saddle shoes, packages of Fels Naptha and the mist of memory in which the hero's thoughts are enwrapped. Herman Raucher's screenplay is a discerning and appreciative translation of one boy's trip along a trajectory of psychological and sexual change.

Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30
we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.
Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10
This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.
Fantastic collection of movie music.......2001-02-13
Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops never fail to disappoint. This is a rousing stirring collection of overtures and themes from some of Hollywood's biggest films. And what better piece to start off the album than the "20th Century Fox Fanfare". A lot, if not all, of these pieces will be familiar to movie lovers. Who can resist the beautiful "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" or the "Theme from Love Story". Then there's the heart pumping "Theme from Jaws" and the "Theme from Rocky". This is a terrific album, and belongs, not just in a music fans collection, but also a movie lovers.

A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10
Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.
Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.
Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.
This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.
"one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26
Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors
Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.
The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

music from a dream.......2005-09-26
Other than the theme and end tracks, the whole album is from Picasso Suite. I have never seen that film but I have seen the Summer of 42. It is a lovely film. The sumptuous photography, the sensitive acting performances from Herme and the beautiful Jennifer O`Neill. I still treasure the impressionistic image of her on the sheet music. And best of all is Michel Legrand`s masterpiece. If you want to enjoy this all-time romantic favourite, The Summer Knows, get the DVD. You get to enjoy the movie and music which sounds better away from the CD. And Legrand`s variations on the theme (no vocal version included) are priceless gems. You cannot anything better than the piano tinkling out the theme and the strings sweeping in. Peter Nero got a hit on his piano but it cannot surpass the soundtrack. I wonder who played the piano for the soundtrack. Good man. The theme music was played in the film on as source music coming from the turntable (I still have the record) while the boy and Miss Lovely Jennifer were dancing. He was comforting her because she had just lost her husband to the War. Very touching scene.

Despite running for only a month Off-Broadway in 2002, this musical was preserved in a studio cast recording five years later. Based on Herman Raucher's coming-of-age memoir about a very special New England summer (which also spawned a 1971 movie that boasted one of Michel Legrand¹s most famous themes, THe Summer of '42 is uneven but sports enough grace notes to be deemed encouraging. Working from a book by Hunter Foster (himself a musical-theater actor of note), David Kirshenbaum has come up with a pleasant, if perhaps a little bland scoreone wishes his music reflected more the youthful passion felt by the main protagonist, 15-year-old Hermie, for the older Dorothy. Kirshenbaum, like many young composers of his generation, displays a certain Sondheimian bent ("Will That Ever Happen to Me?" "I Think I Like Her") but the best tracks are the ones that incorporate period touches, most notably in the lovely Andrews Sisters-like harmonies of Celia Keenan-Bolger, Danielle Ferland and Megan Valerie Walker (check out their winning, swinging "You're Gonna Miss Me," "Man Around the House," and "Oh Gee, I Love My G.I."). As Dorothy, the wonderful Rachel York gets three ballads that may well find their way in many cabaret set lists in years to come--Alice Ripley already did the belting showcase "Losing Track of Time" (a bonus track) on Unsuspecting Hearts. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
"Summer of '42 is a coming-of-age piece drenched in nostalgia." -- New York Times
Original cast recording of a concert performance of the musical Summer of '42. The only complete recording of this popular musical, with many productions being produced across the country. Most of the original off-Broadway cast, together with Broadway star Rachel York, were assembled for this concert performance and subsequent original cast recording. Recorded at New York's Clinton Studios. Mixed at London's Abbey Road Studios.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and Melancoly.......2007-07-13
The voices perform difficult music flawlessly, and Rachael York has a voice you could just snuggle up to.
Such a Lovely Musical.......2007-03-10
This is an absolutely beautiful show. It perfectly captures the mood of WWII America through the eyes of a 15-year-old boy who befriends a 25-year-old war bride while her husband is overseas. Ryan Driscoll as Hermie and Rachel York as Dorothy are charming together. We really feel their hopes and fears, joys and sorrows. Solo highlights are Driscoll's "Will That Ever Happen to Me?" and York's "Promise of the Morning," "Our Story So Far," and "Losing Track of Time." Touching duets include "Little Did I Dream," "Like They Used To," and "Someone to Dance with Me." A trio of young girls sing several swing interludes in the style of the Andrews Sisters, and Hermie's friends Oscy and Benjie join him for some fun testosterone driven numbers that add comic relief. The entire cast is very talented, but Rachel York is, as always, a standout. Her voice is equally beautiful when soaring powerfully or gently cradling more pensive lyrics. This musicalized version of the classic film is sentimental without being cloying. You will be moved to both laughter and tears. Your heart will break, but it will also be healed. What a treat to have this cast album include the entire show - book and score. It's well worth every penny.

Customer Reviews:
"The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07
"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~
Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.
The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!
Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.
The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.
This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!
Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28
My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??
She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29
Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!
Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.
Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.
On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.
She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.
She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.
Hearing her sing live is like being home!
Astonishing.......2003-09-04
I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...
Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04
Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

"themes & cues savor the romantic that dwells in all of us".......2005-04-12
What a crowning achievement to bring "Reel Love: The Cinematic Romance Album", released by Silva America and featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ conductors are Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and David Temple director of the chorus ~ one can only expect the highest quality of performances and quench the thirst of all "film-score-buffs".
Sit back and unleash the first disc with composers taking each film score cue in alphabeltical order:
"CASABLANCA (AS TIME GOES BY)" (Herman Hupfeld)
"DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (MAIN TITLE & LARA'S THEME)" (Maurice Jarre)
"EL CID (LOVE THEME)" (Miklos Rozsa)
"EMMA (MAIN THEME) (Rachel Portman)
"GONE WITH THE WIND (TARA'S THEME)" (Max Steiner)
"IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (Dimitri Tiomkin)
"LOVE STORY (WHERE DO I BEGIN)" (Francis Lai)
"PLAY MISTY FOR ME (MISTY)" (Errol Garner)
"PRIDE & PREJUDICE (MAIN THEME)" (Carl Davis)
"RYAN'S DAUGHTER (ROSY'S THEME)" (Maurice Jarre)
"SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (THROW THE COINS)" (Patrick Doyle)
"SOMEWHERE IN TIME (MAIN THEME)" (John Barry)
"THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE" (Max Steiner)
"VERTIGO (SCENE D'AMOUR)" (Bernard Herrmann)
"YOUNG & THE RESTLESS (NADIA'S THEME)" (Barry DeVorzon/Perry Botkin Jr)
Arrangements that soar and then simmer into pure meditation of grandeur ~ classic film music prevails, as orchestration comes to the surface with pure originality ~ one masterpiece after another is long last presented as it should have been, is cause for celebration ~ each cue is a distinctive gift for striking modernism, touching on the transition of the period in this planets history.
Second disc is waiting in the wings are the composers and selections also in alphabeltical order:
"A MAN AND A WOMAN (UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME)" (Francis Lai)
"BRAVEHEART (END TITLES)" (James Horner)
"CINEMA PARADISO (LOVE THEME)" (Ennio Morricone)
"EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (MAIN TITLE/ICE DANCE)" (Danny Elfman)

This cd is one of the best orchestra cds ever.......2000-07-24
Wow! What a good job John Williams et al did on this cd. I have bought a lot of cds over the years and usually i find there are only a few songs that i truly like on these cds. On this particular cd, all the songs are among my fovorite songs. The orchestra never sounded better. What a great thrill it is for me to listen to this cd time and time again. This cd is one that you should never get tired of. Please buy this cd and discover the joy of this beautiful music.

GLORIOUS MUSIC, BUT KEEP IN MIND..........2004-10-08
When this soundtrack first appeared in 1971, it was then, as it is now, misleadingly advertised as the soundtrack to only the film SUMMER OF '42. Unfortunately, for the lovers of the Michel Legrand pop standard "The Summer Knows" (the main theme of SUMMER OF '42), this tune comprises only two of the twelve bands on this CD. Fortunately, for those of us who admire Legrand's eclectic score for the film THE PICASSO SUMMER, the remaining ten selections (including the beautiful "Summer Me, Winter Me") are from this 1969 Albert Finney/Yvette Mimieux-starring cinematic search for the most important figure in 20th Century art. An unbalanced album? Perhaps, but I personally appreciate its distribution of weight.
