Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Carter Burwell cut his film scoring teeth on many a Coen brothers movie, quickly gaining a reputation for a quirky, human-scaled inventiveness that informed everything from jazz and folk to orchestral music and even the well-timed nod to Morricone. That often introspective sensibility is well paired to director John Lee Hancock's revisionist take on the legend of San Antonio's fabled doomed fortress, which focuses more on the conflicted human dimensions of its characters than familiar cardboard, pop culture heroics. Burwell's use of orchestral pomp is deliberate and decidedly restrained; more often the composer leans on spare, evocative passages of simple, though ever-inventive folk-based music (like the elegiac "Quiet Mountain") played by various combinations of guitar, banjo, and violin. Vintage traditional Mexican and American tunes are also given their atmospheric due via Jennifer Hammond's and Craig Eastman's arrangements of "La Zandunga" and "Listen to the Mockingbird Sing," respectively. But its Burwell's own peculiarly modernist instincts that inform both tradition ("Crockett's DeGuello") and his own masterfully understated cues, particularly the bleak, almost gothic emotional landscape of his six-part "Battle of the Alamo Suite" and its bittersweet coda, "Blood or Texas." --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Has alot of great songs but as with most CDs some you could do without but knowing this I would still buy it for the songs it has

5 out of 5 stars Great Western Songs.......2006-10-17

"From Alamo to El Dorado, Vol. 2" is a nice collection of western songs from the big and little screen. "Stagecoach To Cheyenne" sung by is catchy Wayne Newton. "Green Leaves Of Summer" by The Brothers Four is a classic. "Marmalade, Molasses and Honey" vocalized by Andy Williams is a lot of fun. I like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear...........2000-08-02

this album is a treat to someone on the heavy side of 50 whose heroes always were and always will be cowboys. we had the best, the truest heroes, and nothing today compares with then. the themes in this album recall evenings spent glued to the tv, engrossed in the latest exploits of men with such unlikely names as bronco and wyatt. most important for me, it contains the theme of "twentysix men", a western that only played for a short while in my area. if you love cowboys, this is an album you have to have.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Cooder Movie Music Long Overdue.......2007-06-09

These were two of my favorite records back in the mid-80's, Americana before Americana even existed. "The Border" evokes beautifully the feel of the southwest, of a hot night with the radio playing some station from Mexico where legend Freddy Fender sings achingly, plaintively, about the dreams of thousands who long for "the broken promised land" of America. "Across the Borderline," written by Cooder, Jim Dickenson, and John Hiatt, is one of the most gorgeous songs you'll ever hear, covered in concert by Bruce Springsteen and rerecorded--with a vocal by Harry Dean Stanton--on Cooder's "Borderline" album. But Freddy Fender's version is the definitive. The music for the rest of "The Border" keeps that southwestern, Mexican-American, feel and vibe, with one more standout track, "Skin Game", an slinky, ominous growl of a song featuring a great vocal by Hiatt and trademark Cooder slide guitar. (By the way, the film, starring Jack Nicholson, is a must-see) "Alamo Bay" is something stranger, for me, not quite as successful, but still worthwhile. The movie (a failure with all the talent involved, Louis Malle directing, and Ed Harris and Amy Madigan starring) is about the clash between exiled Vietnamese fisherman and American fishermen on the Gulf Coast during the late 70s. Cooder's music finds a way to echo this culture clash, particularly in "Theme from Alamo Bay", by combining western instruments and his slide guitar with traditional Asian instruments. The result is truly gorgeous. Also of note is the crunching rocker "Gooks on Main Street" with a vocal by LA punker Lee Ving. Cooder's sountracks, for me, have always been much more interesting than his solo records, whether it be the traditional Appalachian sounds of "The Long Riders" or the Cajun influences on "Southern Comfort". "The Border/Alamo Bay" show him at his best: "The Border", along with "The Long Riders", is in my opinion his best soundtrack, and "Alamo Bay" is not all that far behind. As far as I know, other than the inclusion of certain tracks on the compilation of Cooder's film music released several years ago, this is the first time these have been on CD. They are very much worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Smokin' in bed can sure burn your house down ..........2006-08-15

Thank you to those nice folks from Raven Records for making these two soundtracks available on one CD. Amongst some fine instrumentals, several of which appeared on "Music by Ry Cooder" there are two superb vocal tracks that didn't ... "Building Fires" from The Border, and "Too Close" from Alamo Bay (Amy Madigan can sing, too?) ... and even on their own, they make this a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

5 out of 5 stars "Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07

When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".

Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

5 out of 5 stars "film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13

Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.

Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars THIS is "THE ALAMO"to remember.......2006-07-24

Recently the Disney company inflicted upon the viewing public a revisionist version of "The Alamo"..It was released in April after being yanked from a christmas day opening ..That film was among the worst "Alamo"films ever made, and, adding to the garbage seen on-screen the film was saddled with a minamalist "celtic"yanni-type score by Carter Burwell...This version of "The Alamo"starring John Wyane works well as mythology, and boasts one of Dimitri Tiomkin's best ever fully symphonic scores..
What can one say when one compares the two?In the John Wyane version, history is side-tracked in favor of entertainment, and the result is marvelous.A lot of action,larger-than-life charecters, and robust, coplanesque "western"flavored music...No wonder the film was nominated for so many awards.
In the recent version Billy Bob Thornton replaces John Wyane as Davey Crockett, and instead of getting an all-american hero we get an opportunist who has come to Texas thinking that the revolution was already over, and that as a former congressman,he might renew his political career as a big shot in the new Texas republic..Worse,the revisionist weenies who wrote the script chose to ignore every account that had davey crockett dying an heroic death in favor of the one,MEXICAN(and therefore biased)account that branded crockett one tiny step up from a craven coward...No wonder the music used in this fiasco was not only minamalist, but poorly written to boot.
Tiomkin's music,on the other hand, celebrates heroic men and heroic deeds. It it tuneful, melodic, memorable, and very "american"...It is the kind of music one associates with an"epic"motion picture.Burwell, writing to induce sleep, gives a murky score devoid of any interest..
In the John Wyane version, and contrary to historical fact, the final battle is fought in broad daylight. The sequence is long and exciting, and Tiomkin gives us an exciting sequence of music..In the recent fiasco the producers give us an historical rendering of that final battle, fought in almost total darkness, and Burwell gives us a dirge-like monotone that is more suitable for a funeral service that an epic life and death battle.
Buy this album...It is one of the great scores.Skip the Burwell flapdoodle...Tiomkin's score has been in-print and available for over 40 years,a testament to it's greatness.Burwell's score will go out of print soon,if it has not done so already, and it will stay out of print,a testament to it's basic unsuitability both as a score for a would-be adventure film, and it's general grade zee quality.

4 out of 5 stars Great Score Supplemented with Movie Sound Clips.......2006-02-01

In short: A great score by Dimitri (The Guns of Navarone) Tiomkin. Say what you will about the motion picture, but the soundtrack epitomizes the Texian war of independence. During an extended stint in southern Texas, I had this CD playing almost non-stop.

The CD is supplemented with tracks taken directly from the 1960 movie, dialogue, sound effects and all. Apparently many of the original soundtrack tapes disappeared and the only recourse was to borrow heavily from the film itself. Way back in 1960, when the movie was released, the soundtrack was to be a two-record set. The film's less than successful release caused the soundtrack to be pared-down to a single record.

I am hopefull that the full soundtrack will yet be recovered and re-released. Until then, enjoy the combination of music, horses hooves pounding the prairie, and John Wayne dissertations.

5 out of 5 stars Remember the Alamo.......2005-09-09

It is more than 40 years since John Wayne's epic film appeared in London's West End and, with this CD, it is as yesterday. Not only does it include all the music from the film and the old vinyl recording but here are the words of Wayne's David Crockett and Harvey's Travis. It is as if the whole film has been condensed into an hourglass. Listen...and "remember the Alamo!"

    4 out of 5 stars Almost there.......2005-07-13

This recording is heaps better than the old lp, but i could have done without the spoken words. still, i liked this version of this subject a lot better than the more recent version with Billy Bob Thornton.
However, the John Wayne version has its flaws as well. The final battle took place before daylight, for example, not after daylight as Wayne depicts it.
Plus, Jim Bowie was very critically ill at the time of the battle, and had lost his wife three years before, not during the siege as Wayne describes it.
Otherwise, this is one of Dimitri Tiomkin's best scores.

2 out of 5 stars EXPANDED ALAMO SOUNDTRACK A WILLFUL RIP-OFF!.......2005-03-26

This so called "definitive edition of Dimitri Tiomkin's magnificent score to "The Alamo" is not only a disgrace it is a supreme and willful rip-off. The majority of the additional tracks are filled with dialogue and sound effects which make it impossible to hear or enjoy the music behind it. It was obviously lifted off the final mixed theatrical film soundtrack but nowhere on the outer CD package does it mention this. The original LP of this soundtrack had already insulted Tiomkin by including John Wayne's dialogue over one music track and adding two pop songs which had little or nothing to do with the film, thereby cutting Tiomkin's music down even further. This latest CD adds irreparable injury to the LP's original insult by the addition of these intrusive dialogue tracks. The fact that in the last 25 years, thanks to the efforts of people like Charles Gerhardt, George Korngold, Tony Thomas and others, film music has gained a new well-deserved respect as an art form being able to stand on its own outside the film for which it was written, seems to have escaped the notice of the producer of this CD, who singularly has been responsible for the musical mutilation of numerous classic soundtracks from different major labels over the last few years (West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Bye Bye Birdie, A Star is Born, Carousel, and Oklahoma, to name some of the worst examples). If you want to hear Tiomkin's score to "The Alamo" with a little more musical respect look for the out of print Varese Sarabande CD which includes the John Wayne track from the LP but at least presents the remainder of the score with no intrusions imposed by people who produce a CD as a mere souvenir of the movie with no respect for the composer and his music.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't Remeber THIS "Alamo".......2006-07-21

When making another version of a film that has already been made producers, directors, performers, and score composers are too often tempted to "do it differently",as if by twisting and turning a basic premise they will succeed..The classic film version of"The Alamo"is and remains the John Wyane version, which was nominated for several academy awards.Granted, the John Wyane version had little to do with actual history, but, then again, the purpose of the film industry has always been to entertain, not to teach..John Wyane, who produced and directed,as well as being the star of that film chose Dimitri Tiomkin to score his film.
      Tiomkin,and old-line symphonic genius,provided a magnificent score,at once adventurous and poingnant..
The people responsible for this version of"The Alamo"decided to teach, rather than entertain, and,at the same time attempted to be politically correct as well. Thus, the mythic aspects inherent in the John Wyane version were replaced by morally ambiguous nonsense, and heroics were more or less eliminated in favor of a rather desperate survival theme, coupled with some added imperialistic touches with the addition of the Sam Houston charecter as a major player along with Bowie,Crockett, and Travis.
The people responsible for this film ,having many fine symphonic-oriented composers to choose from instead opted for minalmism by Carter Burwell..One can hardly imagine, for instance,a five-star gourmet meal served on a foam plate, with plastic knife and fork.Likewise one can hardly imagine a would-be epic western (even if it is very revisionist)bearing a score that plays like a new-age snoozer...But this is exactly what Burwell has given us...There are no epic themes here...There is an enormous orchestra credited as having participated in this project however when one listens to the finished product one is hard-pressed to HEAR any evidence of this participation.
John Wyane's script called for a lot of action on-screen,and Tiomkin obligingly provided very suitable musical themes..
The script for this new film does not call for very much action, even short-changing the audience during the final battle scene by shooting it in near-darkness,and underscoring it with a dirge-like monotone.
This new film was"troubled"from the very start.Ron Howard was supposed to direct but he didn't.The cast was shuffled around several times. Some "Main"charecters were eliminated entirely ,although thier traces continued to show up in the trailers released for this movie..While on the subject of the trailers for this film, the music used in them was 110% better than the Burwell claptrap..Scenes featured in the trailers were actually NOT in the finished film. The film was scheduled for a christmas opening,a slot usually reserved for top-of-the-line oscar contenders, and was then, suddenly yanked, and later released in April, where it died a much-deserved death after about a week in theatres,a colossal flop.
The film was terrible, and part of this is due to the Burwell score which is terrible-plus.

4 out of 5 stars Defending the Alamo.......2005-09-09

I enjoyed the film and, in particular, the intelligent and sensitive portrayal of David Crockett but...so much had been cut by the time it was released as a DVD in England. The soundtrack is pleasant enough so if you liked it on the screen you will enjoy the CD but we do not have the Deguello on its own, (but have the haunting duo with David Crockett's fiddle), and we do not have the saucy little tune played at San Jacinto. On balance, worth buying.

      5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable a-typical score.......2005-03-05

Most war movies have underscore's that pulse with energy and power of battle. Carter Burwell takes another course. His music is melancholy and some people have taken the celtic sounding music and complained out it but I found the music to be powerful and perfectly fitting with the movie. The Alamo is also enjoyable as a single listening experience although it does help to have seen the movie. I particularly enjoyed the track where Crockets fiddle is combined with the Mexican "Slit Throat" band. Overall, I found this cd to be enjoyable and it gets better every time i listen to it.

      5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2004-12-01

A few comments about the movie The Alamo, if you would indulge me for a moment. It is pertinent. I didn't have high expectations for this film, the trailers I saw made it out to be another larger-than-life, ain't-afraid-of-nothing, cliché-filled motion picture. We lived in San Antonio for several years, it is a great town filled with wonderful people. We visited the Alamo on several occasions. It is a holy place for Texans, sacred, and being "non-Texans" I am sure most of the locals felt we really couldn't appreciate or even grasp the significance of the place, the honor of those who fought and died there. I must admit it was all somewhat lost on me. Thus, I was fully expecting this movie to be overdone and nauseating, especially considering I am not the biggest fan of two of the lead actors (Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Quaid).

OK, please bear with me, I will get to my point in a second. We ended up renting the film as I had heard the cinematography was sensational (it was). But my biggest surprise was the film itself. Not the script, not the actors, but the entire film. I can't really put into words how good it was, not perfect, but an excellent motion picture and probably an accurate depiction of the individuals and events as they occurred. And both Thornton and Quaid were exceptional...they deserve Oscars come January, and it will be a shame if they don't get them.

Now, concerning this soundtrack. To put it simply, if this CD isn't the best soundtrack winner for 2004, then there is a conspiracy going on. It isn't on Amazon's editors picks, nor the customer's favorites list, I chalk that up to being it was just recently released. However, it should be on both, and highly competitive for the top honors this year. It is simply that good. Carter Burwell set a new standard with the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and may have exceeded it with this one. The music here just puts the visualizations of the movie back into my head...the music retells the story as well as the images.

The bottom like is fairly straightforward, if you liked the movie than you owe it to yourself to get this soundtrack. There is absolutely no way you will be anything other than engrossed in it.
