Best known for its hilarious bossa nova send-up "The Boy From...," the musical revue The Mad Show ran off-Broadway for three years in the late 1960s. With music by Mary Rodgers (daughter of Richard, mother of Adam Guettel) and lyrics by, among others, Marshall Barer (Rodgers's collaborator on Once Upon a Mattress) and Steven Vinaver, the show musicalized material from the satirical MAD magazine. Some of the material is of the guess-you-had-to-be-there variety, but Linda Lavin's lyrical "Looking for Someone" has seen some life past the show, and "Well It Ain't" is instantly recognizable as a Bob Dylan spoof. The best song, however, remains "The Boy From..." (also sung by Lavin), which wittily spoofs the Getz-Gilberto classic "The Girl from Ipanema" courtesy of credited lyricist "Esteban Ria Nido," a rough Spanish-translated nom de plume for Stephen Sondheim. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Never would have guessed this would make it to CD........2006-10-26

I had this record when I was a kid and listened to it frequently when I outgrew the Disney soundtracks and fairytale records. I didn't get a lot of the references but the music was good and I could tell it was all in good fun. So glad it's available on CD since I don't have a turntable anymore and anyway wore out the vinyl years ago. A lot of the tracks are dated (you definitely need to have some knowledge of 60s pop culture to get a lot of the references) but it's still an enjoyable listen. Favorites: "You Never Can Tell", "Misery Is...", "The Gift of Maggie" and "The Boy From...".

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-09-14

The staff reviewer can hardly keep his pants on he's so much in love with sondheim and the boy from. It stunk. I wanted to puke before I ever found out who "wrote" it. It was NOT the best thing on the disk. Just about everything ELSE was the best thing on the disk. It was brilliantly funny, Mary Rodgers' hate song was a treasure. The skits (contrary to the staff reviewer) were not you had to be there stuff. They were hilarious, from the pseudo-overture to the final sketch. I liked some better than others, but loved them all. I bought it years ago from a store in SF that sold tapes of oop LPs. Then found a copy of the LP. And finally, the shining moment, the DVD appeared. Linda Lavin (big on Bway before Alice) and Jo Anne Worley (the only performers' names I know) were a riot.

5 out of 5 stars A lost classic.......2005-09-09

Singable, hummable, quotable, memorable stuff, composed and performed by artists who would become much more famous in the decades to follow.

Don't miss: "You Never Can Tell," "Hate Song" and "Academy Awards for Parents." Timelessly funny.

5 out of 5 stars I'm "Personally" "Mad" About This Album!.......2003-04-15

I received this Cd as a Christmas present, and it honestly has been played just about everyday. Here we have two totally different albums combined and it provides us with two different sides of Short. Of the two my favorite is "The Mad 20's". I guess if for any reason it's because I'm more familiar with those songs, that's the kind of music I like. But, "My Person Property" did introduce me to Cy Coleman, now, one of my favorite composers. I only knew Coleman through Sinatra songs like "The Best Is Yet To Come" & "Witchcraft". But almost every song on that album is enjoyable. I absolutely love " You Fascinate Me So". I never heard a song so sophisticated. How on Earth Carolyn Leigh managed to come up with such rhymes is beyond me. It's one of Coleman's best. Standard songs off the Coleman albums are; "The Best Is Yet To Come", "Wicthcraft","Hey Look Me Over",& "Rules of the Road". But the umfamiliar songs as I said are wonderful too. "I've Got Your Number" has a very good arrangment behind it. "Its" is a swinging song. And the title track is charming as well. I do though prefer his arrangment on the album "Songs of New York" over the one heard of here.

"The Mad 20's" has Short with a sort of New Orleans style band. The albums starts off fast with Harry Warren's "Nagasaki", and never really lets up. Now, where Short was probably a bit more romantic on the other album, due to the song material, the Short heard on "The Mad 20's" is the kind of Short you'll hear when you see him in Cafe Caryle's. It's fun and energetic. Short sounds like he's having a good time. Some of my favorite tracks are "Changes", has a very 1920's sound to it. "Tiger Rag", "Sweet So and So", I can only imagine one of the few songs Ira Gershwin wrote without George, when he was alive & "Heebie Jeebies" and there's even room for a quick Louis Armstrong impersonation. All Bobby Short fans should enjoy the album. Those not too familiar with Short might only like "My Personal Property". Here we have two of Short's best early albums, and I'm glad his recordings are now starting to de reissued on Cd.

Bottom-line: Two of Bobby Short's best albums. A must have for fans. And a good choice of those just starting to discover Short.

3 out of 5 stars "Sugar" by any other name would be ..........2006-06-14

This is the London production of the Jule Styne musical "Sugar".

The story was taken from the 1959 Marilyn Munroe Movie, with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon - but the songs were all original Styne/Merrill numbers.

"Sugar" (the character played by Munroe in the original movie) is a musician who encounters two fellow female musicians. The catch is that they are really men, who have adopted female disguises in a desperate attempt to escape gangsters who want to eliminate them because they have witnessed a gangland slaying.

Much of the appeal of the original movie comes from Miss Munroe's "sexy innocence" - and the fine score by Adolph Deutsch. The musical is frankly not really Jule Styne at his best, although the score does have its moments. Tommy Steele is a bit of an acquired taste too.

One for collectors who want to have their Jule Styne complete (especially if you can't find a copy of the Broadway Version - "Sugar") rather than something you'd rush out to buy, really, but enjoyable enough if you can put Marilyn Munroe and the original (and infinitely better) movie out of your mind.

Ok i like happy boy and i have listened to another cd by them and it was really good..as for this one it isn't..

If you are looking for a seemless mix of great songs this isn't the cd for you. I have listen to countless mixes by many different djs in many different genres and this is by far the worst i have ever listened to. The track list is very good, but their mixing skills could use a lot of work..it seems like they just go directly into the next song without any thought at all..for example it will go from a song with lots going on in it sound wise to the begining of a another track just like that..no transition just silence all of a sudden..it is very irritating..and the transition to the last song..drowning - cleveland lounge...that's another story..it goes from house right into a Jungle track..i mean come on..it sounded terrible and the only thing that kept me listening to it was that i like the song..the first time i heard it on Ak1200- mixed live...a couple of years ago...anyways if you really like house then seriously find another cd..this is will definetly go into my closet somewhere
