Michael Nyman came of age as a classical composer in the radical London of the late '60s. His work embraces multiple vernaculars (jazz, avant garde, conceptual art) and helped cement the foundation of what came to be known as minimalism. Decades into his career, Nyman's score to Jane Campion's film The Piano made him a star. The movie's themes of colonialism and silence (its protagonist, portrayed by Holly Hunter, cannot speak) were perfectly aligned with his longtime interests in world and ambient music. Horn players assist members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in fleshing out Nyman's stately, hymn-like motifs. On the more heavily orchestrated cues, sentimentality wins out over minimalist restraint; the best tracks feature Nyman on solo piano, playing the rudimentary, faux period repertoire of Hunter's character. --Marc Weidenbaum

5 out of 5 stars Sounds of emotion.......2007-01-24

I saw the film, The Piano, many years ago. I loved the music very much. I listened to this album over and over. I then lost the CD a couple of years ago. I recently purchased it again. I turned it on, to have some music to relax to while I took a bubble bath. I pressed play, got in the tub, and began to listen. I had to get out of the tub and stop it from playing, otherwise my tears would cause the bathtub to overflow. In other words, this goes beyond normal relaxing piano music. The emotion it evokes is pretty raw. But when you're in the mood, it's a great album.

1 out of 5 stars Extraordinary.......2005-12-02

Has anyone noticed how Chopin has copied Michael Nyman's score for The Piano in his Piano Sonata No.3 in B minor, Op.58, Largo? Someone had better tell Nyman.

5 out of 5 stars Complex & Beautiful..........2005-08-21

Truly magnificent! The Piano's "My Big Secret" is tragicly
beautiful...haunting and contemplative...truly a stunning piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars La obra maestra de Michael Nyman!.......2005-08-12

1 out of 5 stars Lite music for lite people.......2004-08-25

The central conceit of Jane Campion's ludicrously over-praised "The Piano" is that Ada, a mute, communicates through the music she plays on her beloved piano -- which magical instrument, I might add, can somehow be transported, unplayed in a crate below decks in a sailing vessel from Scotland to New Zealand, and remain more or less perfectly in tune. What's more, it can be left on that beach, partially uncrated, for several days, with the sea lapping about its feet, and remain in tune.

And once it is out of the crate, it seems that if the anachronistic, aimless and frilly twaddle she produces on the piano are any indication, Ada's thoughts are mostly of afternoons spent in day spas relaxing with cucumber slices upon the eyes to the strains of Windham Hill-style new age noodlings. I suppose if you're partial to "relaxing," fatuous piano dawdlings this would be your thing. But you'd be well-advised to seek out something a little more musically interesting than explore this sonic equivalent of a vat of vanilla yoghurt.
