The 10th anniversary of American film and television scoring titan Henry Mancini's passing was marked by the US Postal Service issuing a commemorative stamp in conjunction with a gala tribute concert hosted by Julie Andrews and astronaut-senator John Glenn. But for Mancini buffs, this previously unreleased double-disc soundtrack for the massively successful 1983 ABC-TV miniseries (second in viewership only to Roots) will seem a more gratifying tribute to the American pop music icon's enduring legacy. Novelist Colleen McCullough's grand soap opera about a priest caught up in a forbidden Australian outback-rooted romance eventually sprawls over five decades and half the globe, but Mancini skillfully keeps its emotional core focused via some of the most subtly romantic and elegantly understated writing of his career. His sublime melodic gifts yield the memorable Drogheda and Maggie themes, the former's portrayal of the vast Australian wilderness ingeniously carried at first by but a lone dulcimer, while the latter perfectly underpins the story's budding romance with tinges of bittersweet melancholy. -- Jerry McCulley

At long last!.......2007-03-31
Like probably millions of others, I was completely captivated by the music of "The Thorn Birds" from the first few minutes of its 1983 premiere. I had to have this soundtrack! Little did I know that I would have to wait almost 25 years to get it. At the time - and this was way before the Internet - I called all over the country trying to find out why this most incredible soundtrack was not being released. I finally reached one of Mr. Mancini's publicists, who gave me a vague explanation about the work being tied up in legal wrangling amongst multiple parties. Reluctantly, I gave up. It was just by happenstance that I recently learned it was released in 2004, and of course I ordered it on the spot! It is marvelous to experience this music once more, and with 2 CDs, all the themes are here - Main Title/Drogheda, the haunting Meggie's Theme, what I call "Paddy's Theme" which first appears on Track 7 (break out the tissues) and repeats at some of the tenderest moments, and even the delightful sheep-shearing theme on track 19. The more you listen, the more you appreciate the thread of cohesiveness that runs through the entire work, and the genius of Henry Mancini. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I, too, found the first track & a few others to be mysteriously "flat", as though something was missing or it was poorly mastered. On first listen, I was severely disappointed, but fortunately those questions have been answered by other reviewers on this site, for which I am most grateful! I have ordered "Case History of a Film Score" with the accompanying CD, and am really looking forward to hearing the main "Thorn Birds" theme with the dulcimer intact, as Mr. Mancini intended & all of us fans remember. Incidentally, I found the producers' notes included with this CD to be fascinating and almost as much fun as the music. Buy this CD and beam yourself back to life on Drogheda and the powerful love between gorgeous Rachel Ward and her handsome Father Ralph.
THE DULCIMER !!!!!.......2007-03-13
PEOPLE:
The DULCIMER is not here but it is on other cd which is accompanying a book. You can buy here on AMAZON. The book with the 16-track cd calls:
"CASE HISTORY OF A FILM SCORE - BY HENRY MANCINI - EDITED BY ROY PHILLIPPE.
WARNER"
IT SAYS: "the book and cd are specially rewarding for Thorn Birds fans who spent $25 on Varese Sarabande's 2-CD soundtrack only to discover that the dulcimer- the central instrument of the score - was inexplicably missing from the main-title track and that the extensive liner notes barely discuss the score (and don't include a single quote from the composer about his music, despite the fact that a little resarch would have turned up three extensive interviews that Mancini gave about the music of The thorn birds). Both of these omissions are rectified by the book and accompanying CD. The main title is intact, complete with dulcimer overlay, and Mancini's discussion of the project is so thorough that all of our questions about this remarkable score are answered at last."
Plus the Dulcimer the book "Case History of a film score" has more: the piano when Ralph sees Meggy slowly coming down the stairs at Mary's birthday party... . This music is missing from the Varese cd, but it is here on this extra cd - Case History. It's wonderful!!
Mancini vs. LaLoggia.......2006-06-06
I recently watched an old favorite The Lady in White,
written, directed AND scored by Frank LaLoggia .....
My ears depicted a very very strong similarity between
the haunting melody that permiates this movie with
the same haunting melody that plays throughout
The Thorn Birds ... I've been trying to research this
online, but to no avail. If anyones has suggestions or
information, please share! Thank you.
Not complete but still great.......2006-03-26
It's clear something is 'wierd' about Track 1 on Disc 1. It almost sounds like part of the track is playng in the background when the volume should be turned up! But still, I'm thrilled that this is finally available. Totally thrilled. It's such a beautiful score. In life and especially in music I find we rarely get 100% when trying to find what we hear on a tv show (try being an x-files Mark Snow music fan) or a movie. But I'm sooooo glad to have whatever I can get. Plain and simple. It's a shame that something is 'off' about certain tracks but again, I'll take it. Beautiful stuff.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

This film is pathetic.......2007-03-13
I LOVE RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN, but this film is horrible!! I don't know how I could spend my money on this!
Just sorry I couldn't give it less.......2007-01-19
The Thornbirds is one of my favorite novels, and though I liked the movie (Richard Chamberlain mainly) I couldn't have been more upset with this movie. It's reaching, pure and simple. It goes against whole concepts in the book, such as Luke coming back. The entire point of Luke was that he was a dead beat, couldn't have cared less, and certainly wouldn't have gone so far as to try to get custody. He loved nothing more than himself and the money he made, he was more than happy to let Meghann have the children he never wanted in the first place and only begat due to his hormones. Above and beyond all the inaccuracies and reachings, another Maggie? Are you kidding?
It's just plain rubbish, and quite frankly it sullies my love of this epic and adored saga.
I like it!.......2007-01-17
Thornbirds - The Missing Years really entertained me. I liked it A LOT. I enjoyed it so much I bought it. Chamberlain reprises his role from the original miniseries and he's great. I agree with a previous reviewer about the final scene. It's one of my favorites too. I also agree with another reviewer who said this one makes good soap opera. Fans of good soap opera should like it. I'm happy to have this miniseries in my DVD collection.
Their great love... in the last shot!.......2007-01-15
The last scene was for me the most touching... The ambitious priest was leaving for Rome... He was waiting to say goodbye... He was anxious to see Meggie... Where is she?
As the train begins to move, every time with more speed, the best shot of the film came when we saw Meggie on her horse in that lovely place, awaiting for the train to pass, barely able to utter last minute thoughts about what she really feels...
Suddenly Ralph sees her from his window... In this precise moment 'everything' was in slow motion... Of course, two lovers were communicating, the world had to stop!
Meggie's eyes were more focused, intense, commanding, and Ralph seemed, momentarily out of himself to bond with her in this gorgeous place... He knew the intensity of this moment would fade... Then we read Meggie's lips saying: " I love you."
This scene said everything... The two lovers were enjoying life at this very moment... Their senses awake and alive, passion burning through their veins, love pounding out such a sweet song in their heart and soul... Love is everything they need... Love is everything humans need...
The Thorn Birds 2 - The Missing Years Should have stayed that way, MISSING!!!.......2006-12-25
The Missing years should have remained MISSING. The one part that really bothers me in the original, at the time of Dane's death Meggie says to Ralph, "Do you think I could ever go back to Luke or any other man after you." The meaning of course being that he should have known Dane was his. The missing years completely blows the whole meaning of the line, along with it the premise of the show. The acting was good, and all in all well done except for Julia Blake who played Fee Cleary. I don't think she did justice to the character created by Jean Simmons whose presence was sorely missed. Amanda Donohoe did a great job. She's a fine actor. Richard Chamberlain was his usual charming and talented actor he has always been. Simon Westaway, who played Luke, did a fine job as well. The story itself was lacking all the way around. The only decent part was when they made love. Yet, another inconsistency. When he goes back to her years later, Meggie says, and I paraphrase "It's not been that long just 20 years since I've seen you." There are just all sorts of inconsistencys through out the whole movie. Henry Mancini's music was also missed. All in all a BAD picture. I would have given this film a 1/2 a star or zero had they been available choices. If you liked or even loved the original you'll be greatly disappointed. Spend your money for the real deal and just imagine what might have been, instead of this very poor attempt to recapture the EXCELLENCE of the first one. Believe me anything you think up and will be far better than this movie. I'll say it again; except for Julia Blake who played the Fee character the acting was very good, including Olivia Burnette who played Justine O'Neill, another fine actor. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!
