When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar
®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03
It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30
Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!
Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05
I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.
Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!
If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)
Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
What a find!!.......2003-06-15
I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)
Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.
The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.
One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).
The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".
If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!
A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23
Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-lifenot surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

trailer music.......2006-08-06
i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!
Great!.......2006-01-17
Now, i loved the movie, but the soundtrack blew me away! all the songs fit the movie perfectly. However, it is missing the instrumental version of "Cells" by the Servants, which plays on the DVD title menu
so, here you go:

Instrumental Version!
Have Fun
sin city.......2005-09-30
Is a very good soundtrack because i think that Robert Rodriguez has made a great choice with the composers and his own musical composition
Go Here if you want Cells download.......2005-09-27
While the previous reviwer was correct that Cells the trailer song is not on the soundtrack, Servant did indeed create an instrumental version and you can obtain it at this link follow the instructions it is at the Servant website so its legal and its for a limited time only!
http://www.bdarules.com/2005/05/servant-release-instrumental-of-cells.html
Your Welcome ;)
An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16
FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!
So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.
Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

Intriguing movie.......2006-08-07
By itself, the music is music is nothing special, but the movie is superb (if not bizzare). However, the music is so well adapted to the movie and is so appropriate, the hearing the music again brings back memories, images, and emotions of the movie.
If you liked the movie, then buying this CD is well worth it. If you haven't seen the movie, then it probably won't be worth it.
Best soundtrack ever!!!!! OLD BOY.......2006-02-20
I love asiatics films, but the music in this film is awesome. There are no voices, but classical music. Extremely recomended, If you love classical music you can not miss this cd.
Ville Valo's favorite movie...so I had to see it...........2006-01-11
And I think Ville and I would be running into each other at the theatre quite a bit... amazing cinematopgraphy , great soundtrack, and smash ending.
Wad u might wanna know before picking it up...........2005-11-22
The sounds as well as the soundtrack is very reminiscent of the way the OST for FIGHT CLUB was done....
The music is engaging to a first time listener, but would evoke memories if you have watched the movie....
The track listings of this OST does not give away the plot or twisted ending of the movie!
The OST is packaged in a Digipack, with a slit that encloses a booklet of pictures, track listings and credits. Don't look forward to understanding too much, unless u can read Korean!
If you liked the film and loved the music, this is for you. If not, stick to the Movie.....
Amazing soundtrack.......2005-10-26
Old Boy is one of my favourite films of all time, and I don't think I would rate it so highly if it wasn't for the soundtrack. My favourite track is "The Last Waltz" which plays a lot through the film and on the end credits. The whole soundtrack is great, but this song in particular made the film seem so profound and gave it much more emotional impact in my opinion. There isn't any really bad songs on here, but it's worth buying for that track alone

Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting) once again reinvents the cinematic experience with a heartwarming story of two little boys, faith, miracles...and lots of money. Starting anew after the death of their mother, 9-year-old Anthony is ever practical, while his 7-year old brother Damian uses imagination, fantasy, and faith to make sense of his confusing world. When a suitcase full of money falls out of the sky at Damien's feet, it sets the boys on the adventure of a lifetime that leads them to realize that true wealth has nothing to do with money. Featuring original score by John Murphy, "TUMBLE AND FALL" by Feeder, "BRAZIL" by S'Express, and the film's signature song "NIRVANA" by El Bosco.

A mantra for love.......2007-05-19
Whole disc it is beutiful, the movie too. But, the song Nirvana is the most beautiful song that a lot of people can hear. Its a kind of mix of apocaliptic premonition with love song. Chorus like it were came from the sky by angels. Really, beautiful song for all kind of liking.
Brilliant!!.......2007-05-12
The soundtrack and the film are both brilliant!! The touching tracks on the soundtrack help you remember what it feels like to be a child. Imagination. That is what is missing from today's society and that is what Millions helps us recapture!!
Worth a million!.......2007-01-04

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11
Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

Amazon.com essential recording
This 1940 soundtrack earns a spot on any essential-Disney list if only for the fact that it introduced "When You Wish upon a Star," sung by Cliff Edwards, whose voice has become ubiquitous in the 60 years Jiminy Cricket has been in movies and educational films as well as on TV shows. But Pinocchio is no one-hit wonder: the disc also boasts "I've Got No Strings," "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (An Actor's Life for Me)," and an endearingly maudlin instrumental score. --John Sanchez

pinnochio good!.......2005-08-14
this whole soundtrack is good but in the movie the coachman(voiced by the same actor who voices stromboli)scared me and still does. the "sinister stromboli" track is very disturbing in it's orchestral style. the coachman not stromboli is the real villain even though the disney archives say so.
Coachman: and they won't be coming back as boys!(laughing)
The Magic of Disney!.......2004-08-28
This is a great soundtrack! You can really hear the mastery that went into the music, and you never really appriciate it until you hear it all by itself. The disc is worth having just to hear Cliff Edwards sing "When you Wish Upon a Star", one of my all time favorite songs. As long as you can get past the fact that the audio was mastered from very primitive recordings, you will enjoy this for many years to come. A great buy!
Got the Orginal L.P.......2003-11-08
I got the orginal L.P. of pinocchio when I was Two years old and thinking about selling. Want to know what the value is. If interested please e-mail me.
Thank you
SUPERB.......2003-02-28
This was not an easy soundtrack to get my hands on. It was my husband that did. Our toddler has an everlasting affection for the film and the two songs, "Hi Diddle de" and "I've got no strings" so we thought the second addition to his own c.d. collection would be the entire soundtrack. (The Snow White soundtrack was the first, and that is just as great as this one!)
Remastered into all it's glorious musical score, Pinochhio is a great c.d. for those who like movie/musical score type soundtracks. It does have the two songs that my son loves too, and also, "when you wish upon a star". "When..." is one of the most sweet and simple songs that has never failed to enlighten me. I get very choked up and happy at the same time when I hear it. It's such a classic song. I actually think the music is better than the movie! There were parts of the film that I thought were truly disturbing.
I highly recommend this c.d. The sound is crystal clear, and it is brilliantly remastered to bring you into the story and feel Pinocchio's pain, sadness, and joy.
A great soundtrack reborn.......2001-08-03
I've been looking for this soundtrack for years, and I can't say enough about it.
Once again, the Pinocchio Soundtrack has made it onto CD, digitally remastered, no less. The sound quality is outstanding, and you can hear the craftsmanship of the musicians behind the music.
Buy the soundtrack to Pinocchio while it's in print, because you never know when the Blue Fairy known as Disney will make it disappear again!

Customer Reviews:
Broadway style performances in terrific sound!.......2006-07-11
These performances by British singers are all ones that Kern himself would have liked. No-nonsense singing and arranging so that what you hear is the song Kern wrote--not a performaner's special interpretation that is more about the performer than the song. Most sound as if they are right out of the show that generated the song in the first place. If you want top drawer musicality of performers that match the composer's, this is far better than the compilations of assorted pop singers. It's all about Kern's music.
