The Truth About Charlie [Soundtrack]

Jonathan Demme's eclectic song choices paradoxically strengthen and weaken the soundtrack to his film The Truth About Charlie. On the one hand, the rich diversity of styles is a treat to behold: fiery tribal world music with a French twist (Rachid Taha) and barnstorming melodic rock (the Soft Boys) merge with stirring soul jazz (Angélique Kidjo) and hyped-up techno dub (Asian Dub Foundation). Moreover, the dark atmosphere permeating the album--exemplified best by the sweltering exotic dance of De Phazz, Transglobal Underground's smoldering trip-hop, and droning, lo-fi post-punk from the Feelies--captures the ominous, suspense-thriller mood of the movie perfectly. However, Charlie also feels unfocused, mostly because too many styles and directions are crammed together and fighting for attention. Consequently, although each individual musician blends genres with pizzazz (as on Manu Chao's Latin-dub-reggae fusion), the textured variety ultimately becomes tiresome. --Annie Zaleski

3 out of 5 stars Songs that are NEVER on the soundtrack .......2005-06-30

Ok am I the only person who listens to the music playing on the main menu page? The track that plays on the main menu page is a techno/dance blast -- yet, through 1 full year of searching, no one can tell me who the artist is! [...]

5 out of 5 stars Aznavour magic.......2004-09-04

As I was watching the movie, and suddenly Aznavour appeared singing that wonderful song I was hooked. Made the movie worthwhile as well as the soundtrack. Many of the other songs are great too. Makes you feel you're in Paris!

4 out of 5 stars almost makes the film worth it.......2003-05-25

But only almost. I would be much happier if this cd had just been released as some kind of super funky collection, instead of as the one redeeming factor of a great waste of money, time, and talent. I really didn't like TTAC, from the very beginning, but the music kept me interested. I don't actually think all of it works very well in the movie--for instance, the chase scene near the end could've benefited from Henry Mancini, not the chill relaxed tune that drags the sequence down and seems to say "don't worry about a thing, it's gonna be okay," which is not the point in a supposed thriller!--but it works just fine in my cd player. Buy the soundtrack, skip the picture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of songs.......2003-02-18

The Truth About Charlie is certainly not the movie that Charade is, but the crew did a commendable job of remaking the Audrey Hepburn/Cary Grant classic with its own original twist. Most critics have torn TTAC to pieces, but it's worth a watch (I plan to buy it on DVD). The soundtrack is spectacular with a variety of French and English songs that are diverse yet all come together to form a dynamic soundtrack that really expresses the feeling of Paris. Even if you found the movie unworthy of praise, I know you'll love the soundtrack!
